The Big Beast had lost by a nose and Rock Fall would be victorious After little less than two months of rest, he made his second G1 appearance in the Vosburgh Stakes. Hanagan tracked the leaders before moving up to challenge inside the final furlong. Muhaarar caught Jungle Cat in the final strides and won by a nose.

Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. then moved the colt up to sixth place down the backstretch, continuing to save ground on the rail. As they entered the stretch, Creator was full of run but had nowhere to go, surrounded by other horses. Ortiz waited patiently until a hole opened, then burst through, rapidly closing on Destin to win by a nose. It was just the fourth photo finish in Belmont Stakes history.
The field of ten included the Group One winners St Nicholas Abbey, Dunaden, Masked Marvel, Nathaniel, Deep Brillante and Reliable Man. Starke tracked the leaders before making his challenge in the straight. In an extremely close finish, Danedream caught Nathaniel in the last stride to win by a nose. With this experience, Weatherly designed his own agricultural monoplane, the Weatherly Model 201.J W R Taylor 1971, p.420. The Weatherly 201 is a cantilever low-wing monoplane, with a fixed tailwheel landing gear, and powered by a nose-mounted 450 hp (336 kW) Pratt & Whitney R-985 radial engine.
Blind Luck returned to racing in the first week in June in the Grade II Hollywood Oaks. There she lost by 1½ lengths to Switch when unable to catch that rival in the stretch. Blind Luck then shipped into Delaware Park for the Grade II Delaware Oaks, which she won by a nose over Havre de Grace in late-running fashion. She remained undefeated on dirt and won over a sloppy track.

After a good start, Affirmed settled into second place behind longshot Rough Sea, while Alydar overcame a bad start to move into third place down the backstretch. Rounding into the stretch, Affirmed moved to the lead. Alydar responded and the two horses dueled head-to-head for the final furlong. Alydar appeared to be in the lead for much of the stretch drive before Affirmed rallied in the final stride to win by a nose.
In the Jerome Handicap, he finished second by a nose to Capot. At age four, Arise continue to perform with the best. At Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York he won the Excelsior Handicap and the Fall Highweight Handicap plus the American Legion Handicap at Saratoga Race Course. On January 14, 2012, Jackson Bend won the one-mile Hal's Hope Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Under jockey John Velazquez, he was angled out in the stretch drive and scored by one length over Sangaree. In April 2012, Jackson Bend won the $400,000 Grade 1 Carter Handicap at seven furlongs at Aqueduct Racetrack. As the longest shot on the board, he held off odds-on favorite Caleb's Posse to win by a nose.
The first design by Grover Loening after he had formed his company was a two-seat braced-wing monoplane fighter the M-8. It had a fixed tail-skid landing gear and was powered by a nose-mounted Hispano-Suiza engine with a tractor propeller. The pilot and gunner had tandem open cockpits. The first aircraft was flown in 1918 and after testing, the United States Army Air Corps ordered 5,000 aircraft to be built.
Will Take Charge (foaled April 13, 2010) is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse. Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, the horse is best known for his wins in the 2013 Travers Stakes and Clark Handicap and for being beaten by a nose in the 2013 Breeders' Cup Classic. He was named American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse for 2013. He was retired in September, 2014, anticipated to stand at stud at Three Chimneys Farm.

Easy Goer, the 1988 American Champion Two-Year-Old Colt finished second to Sunday Silence in the Kentucky Derby by lengths and the Preakness by a nose then in the Breeders' Cup Classic by a neck. Easy Goer prevailed by eight lengths in the Belmont. Both horses were later voted into the American Hall of Fame. After his retirement from racing, Sunday Silence attracted little support by breeders in the United States and was exported to Japan.

Graze impacts trigger the inertia mechanism, where instead the pellet in a heavy carrying plug travels forwards onto the striker. The striker is protected in storage by a nose safety cap. Normally this is removed before loading, but it may also be left in place if the target is behind cover. In what became known as the "Fighting Finish", Don Meade on Brokers Tip and jockey Herb Fisher aboard Head Play battled their way to the finish line of the 1933 Kentucky Derby. Head Play was leading when Meade sent Brokers Tip through an opening on the inside to pull even. As the horses ran side-by-side down the stretch, their jockeys grabbed and whipped each other. The racing stewards declared Brokers Tip the winner by a nose.
In his first race, a 7-furlong maiden event on the main track at Belmont Park, Da' Tara lost to his stablemate, Anak Nakal, by a length, finishing second and beating the third place horse by a nose. Alan Garcia, who rode Da' Tara to victory in the 2008 Belmont Stakes, was also the jockey that day. The colt failed to break his maiden as a two-year-old, finishing fourth in a Calder maiden race in December.

It was powered by a nose-mounted tractor Rolls Royce Condor IIIA piston engine, fitted with a Leitner-Watts metal propeller.
The Pomilio brothers first armed reconnaissance biplane was the Pomilio PC which appeared in 1917. It was a conventional biplane of mixed construction with a fixed tailskid landing gear. It had two open cockpits in tandem and was powered by a nose-mounted 260 hp (194 kW) Fiat A.12 engine. It first entered service in 1917 and was found to dangerously unstable which led to an improved design the Pomilio PD. Only some 70 Pomilio PC were made for Italian Air Force.

Big Truck's next race was on November 24, 2007m in the $200,000 Grade II Remsen Stakes. Ridden by Alan Garcia, he was cut off by the first and third place finishers, Court Vision and Trust N Dustan, in the stretch. Garcia claimed foul after the race, and following a lengthy inquiry no changed were made.
Seattle Smooth is a thoroughbred mare bred in Kentucky by Dr. Oscar Benavides in collaboration with Darley Stud. Seattle Smooth's dam is the unraced mare, Our Seattle Star, by Seattle Song who was bred to Quiet American; a Grade 1 winner by Fappiano who was in turn sired by the great Mr. Prospector. Being sired by Quiet American makes her-half sister to Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Real Quiet, who lost the 1998 Triple Crown by a nose.
Designed as a basic trainer, the first SAIMAN 200 prototype first flew at the end of 1938. It was a wooden conventional biplane with wide track tailwheel landing gear, powered by a nose-mounted 185 hp (138 kW) Alfa-Romeo 115 engine. Two prototypes with 120 hp (74 kW) Alfa-Romeo 110 engines were also built, designated the SAIMAN 205. Two aircraft were sold to the Italian airline Ala Littoria which were followed by three production batches for the Regia Aeronautica.

In October, he took on two of Japan's best thoroughbreds, T M Opera O and Narita Top Road, in the Kyoto Daishoten and defeated them, only to be disqualified for interfering with Narita Top Road. His last run was Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin Racecourse, Hong Kong.
Because Graustark had never raced over 7 furlongs, it was decided, in spite of a slightly infected left front hoof, to run him in the 9 furlong Blue Grass Stakes as a prep for the 1966 Kentucky Derby. Graustark was beaten by a nose by Abe's Hope after suffering a career-ending injury. Gentry Jr. trained the 1967 Kentucky Derby winner, Darby Dan Farm's, Proud Clarion, ridden by Bobby Ussery. Proud Clarion finished third in the 1967 Preakness, behind Damascus and In Reality.
The "Great Match" was heavily anticipated and attended by more than 50,000 spectators, with an estimated television audience of 20 million. As Ruffian left the starting gate, she hit her shoulder hard before straightening herself. The first quarter-mile (402 m) was run in 22 seconds, with Ruffian ahead by a nose. Little more than later, Ruffian was in front by half a length when she changed leads, followed by an audible crack: both sesamoid bones in her right foreleg had snapped.
He led briefly at the 1/2 mile pole, but by the stretch he faded, and Exaggerator won by lengths. The second-place finisher, Cherry Wine, had hit his head on the starting gate and was second-to-last for much of the race but saved ground on the rail and rallied in the stretch to take second place over Nyquist by a nose, thus destroying any chance for the first back-to-back Triple Crown winners since 1977-78.
Tiznow was the fourth betting choice in a field of thirteen. He tracked the leaders down the backstretch and made his move on the turn where he swung five wide. McCarron then hit Tiznow once left-handed and the colt responded with a final lunge, winning by a nose over Sakhee, with Albert the Great two lengths back in third.
Designed as a basic trainer to complement the M.416 in Italian military service, the MB.323 first flew in 1952. It was a single-engine, low-wing cantilever monoplane powered by a nose-mounted Pratt & Whitney Wasp radial engine and a retractable tailwheel landing gear. It had two tandem cockpits covered by a sliding one-piece canopy. The type was evaluated against the Fiat G.49 which was preferred by the air force and the MB.323 did not enter production.
The most anticipated events were the Classic and Distaff. The Classic pitted the five-year-old California Chrome, undefeated in 2016, against Arrogate, a late developing three-year-old, with Arrogate prevailing by half a length. The Distaff featured a face-off between three Eclipse Award winners: Songbird (2015 champion two-year old filly, undefeated in her career before the Breeders' Cup), Stellar Wind (2015 champion three- year-old filly) and Beholder (2015 champion older female). Beholder prevailed over Songbird by a nose.
In the Mile, longshot Tourist prevailed by half a length over Tepin, who was attempting to defend her win in the 2015 renewal. The Filly & Mare Turf was won by Queen's Trust, who held off a late run by Lady Eli by a nose. And in the Juvenile, Classic Empire became the early favorite for the 2017 Kentucky Derby by prevailing over Not This Time by a neck. Mike Smith won the Shoemaker Award for leading jockey at the event.
The PWS-12 was a single-engined two-seat training biplane, fit also for aerobatics, designed in 1928 by A. Grzędzielewski and August Bobek- Zdaniewski at the PWS factory. The design shared similar parts, including fuselage and engine, as a high-wing trainer fighter plane PWS-11, developed at the same time.Glass, A. (1977) The main difference was the addition of a lower wing. It was powered by a nose-mounted Skoda-built version of the Wright J-5 Whirlwind radial engine.
Poet's Voice was adjudged to have won by a nose from Rip Van Winkle, with Red Jazz half a length away in third. After the race Dettori said "The horse was in tremendous form coming into the race, and it means so much to win these big races for Godolphin at Ascot, which is a special course for me. Saeed was confident he would run great. I thought we had a few pounds to find on form, but Saeed was right".
Dee Majesty, Leontes, Air Spinel and Satono Diamond were again in opposition in a race run over 2400 metres on firm ground. With Kawada again in the saddle, he raced towards the middle of the field before making progress approaching the final turn but looked unlikely to obtain a clear run in the straight. Kawada sent Makahishi through a narrow gap 300 metres from the finish, took the lead in the closing stages and won by a nose from Satono Diamond.
Dream Ahead started favourite for the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville four weeks later, but made no impression in the closing stages and finished unplaced behind Moonlight Cloud. In September, Dream Ahead started 4/1 favourite for the Sprint Cup at Haydock Park Racecourse. He raced prominently before Buick sent him into the lead two furlongs from the finish. In a "thrilling" three-way finish he prevailed by a nose from Bated Breath with Hoof It a short head back in third.
The AC 58 comprises a body with a shaped charge warhead and a tail fitted with stabilizing fins. Detonation is initiated by a nose impact and a base fuse. Luchaire designed it at the end of the 1970s to replace the existing STRIM 65 rifle grenade design dating from 1961 that had become obsolescent. The AC 58 uses a bullet trap that allows the use of ball cartridges, rather than the older method that required a blank cartridge to propel the grenade.

Goldikova got a poor start but advanced to fifth behind the early leaders, then started her kick with a quarter of a mile remaining, reaching the lead by mid-stretch. Court Vision and Turallure were in tenth and thirteenth position at the quarter-pole but accelerated rapidly while racing wide, catching Goldikova in deep stretch. Court Vision and Turallure then battled to the wire with Court Vision prevailing by a nose.
" In his debut, Silky Sullivan was 8th in a field of 12 and about 8 lengths back, when he came on to win by a nose. On December 7, 1957, he won the one-mile (1.6 km) $25,000 Golden Gate Futurity after making up 27 lengths. His jockey, Hall of Famer Manuel Ycaza, said later, "When I asked him to run, he answered and ran like a machine, like a rocket. You felt there was something special because nobody had seen anything like that.
The SM.101 was a single-engined low-wing cantilever monoplane with a tailwheel landing gear with retractable main gear. It had an enclosed cabin for two crew and six passengers and was powered by a nose-mounted 235 hp (175 kW) Walter Bora radial engine. The prototype and only SM.101 first flew on 20 December 1947 but the company soon decided that a single-engined passenger transport was not likely to sell and the company developed the design with two engines as the SM.102.
Texas Dandy was an early ambassador for the Quarter Horse breed when he co-starred in Boy From Indiana a 1950 film.Wohlfarth "Keeping Tradition" p. 73 The movie's story involved a farmboy from Indiana who started working for a Quarter Horse trainer in Arizona and ended up as the trainer's main jockey. The real problem in the movie was getting the finish filmed, as it called for the Quarter Horse, played by Texas Dandy, to beat a Thoroughbred race horse by a nose in a match race.
The colt raced at age two in 2008, winning all three of his starts. Ridden by jockey Terry Thompson in his first two starts, he won his debut by a nose in a six-furlong event at Delaware Park Racetrack. In his next start, Old Fashioned won a one-mile race (eight furlongs) over the same track by 15½ lengths. Old Fashioned was not entered in the 2008 Breeders' Cup Juvenile but ran instead in the November 29 Remsen Stakes at New York City's Aqueduct Racetrack.
First flown in November 1914 the Two-Seat Scout was developed from the 1914 Circuit of Britain seaplane. It was two-bay unswept biplane with equal span wings and ailerons fitted on all four wings and a braced tailplane and a single rudder. It had a fixed tailskid landing gear with a cross-axle type main gear with twin wheels carried on vee legs under the fuselage. It was powered by a nose-mounted 100 hp (75 kW) Gnome Monosoupape rotary engine driving a two-bladed propeller.
Winning a competition, such as a horse race, "by a whisker" (a short beard hair) is a narrower margin of victory than winning "by a nose." An even narrower anatomically-based margin might be described in the idiom "by the skin of my teeth," which is typically applied to a narrow escape from impending disaster. Scat Daddy started his three-year-old campaign with a third-place finish in the 2007 Holy Bull Stakes behind Stormello and winner Nobiz Like Shobiz. He came back in the Fountain of Youth Stakes with a late run to overcome a wide trip, winning over Stormello by a nose. In the Florida Derby, Stormello set a fast pace with Scat Daddy tracking in third. Entering the stretch, Scat Daddy moved past Stormello, then held off a late run by Notional to win by lengths.
The Sprengpatrone was used for low angle direct fire where range and accuracy were needed. It was not recommended for use beyond due to inaccuracy or less than due to the risk from shell fragments. This grenade consists of a aluminum cartridge case, a percussion cap in the center of the base, black powder propellant charge, an internal steel projectile filled with PETN and was topped by a nose fuze. The projectile had a rifled aluminum external sleeve which engages the rifling of the Kampfpistole barrel.
For some reason unknown to him, his father rarely races in France, but he frequents the race tracks with Joe. At one race Joe is captivated by a large horse named Kzar; he cannot imagine any of the other horses winning. Yet Kzar loses by a nose and his father wins a large amount of money who placed a large bet against the favorite at the recommendation of Kzar's jockey, Gardner. He buys an Irish thoroughbred named Gilford, trains it, and begins racing again.
One hundred yards from the finishing post, Sunnyhillboy held a one-length lead over his nearest rival, Neptune Collonges, but the 33/1 grey caught up and at the line nothing separated the pair to the naked eye. Jockeys, trainers, viewers and spectators waited for one-and-a-half minutes to hear the judge's official announcement over the Tannoy that Neptune Collonges had snatched victory by a nose. The winner completed the course in 9 minutes 5.1 seconds and earned over £540,000 in prize money.
Several cars came into the pits to repair damage and would have to start at the rear of the field since they were considered to have pitted before the initial green flag. On the second attempt at the start, Ickler got the jump on Moffitt and quickly began to pull away from the field. MacDonald, restarting on the outside of the front row, briefly took the lead by a nose on two restarts. Each time however, Ickler erased the lead and pulled out to a commanding lead.
After the 1917 racing season, Regret was retired for breeding to the new Whitney farm in Lexington, Kentucky. In this last season, she raced in the Brooklyn Handicap against the best of her generation: Old Rosebud, Roamer, Omar Khayyam (winner of the 1917 Kentucky Derby), Boots, Ormsdale and Chiclet. In the final strides, she was defeated by a nose by her stablemate, Borrow, giving away 5 pounds. Out of 11 starts in four seasons (1914–1917), Regret won nine, and placed second in one.
The F.130 was a single- engined biplane design in the BN.3 category based on the larger twin-engined F.60 Goliath. The F.130 had a conventional tailskid landing gear and three open tandem cockpits. It was powered by a nose-mounted 447 kW (600 hp) Farman 18Wd W-18 piston engine. Following a series of test flights it was underpowered with only one engine and it failed to arouse any interest from either domestic or export customers and was not ordered into production.
It was powered by a nose-mounted inline piston engine and various engines were evaluated during flight trials, originally with a 205 hp (153 kW) Alfa-Romeo 115 and also a 200 hp (149 kW) Argus As 10E and a 230 hp (172 kW) Hirth HM.508. Donald A. Luscombe formed the Luscombe Aircraft Engineering Company in 1933 at Kansas City, Missouri. The Phantom or Model 1 was the first aircraft built by the company, and first flew in 1934. It was a high-wing braced monoplane with conventional fixed tail-wheel landing gear, and was powered by a nose-mounted 145 hp (108 kW) Warner Super Scarab radial engine. The fully enclosed engine cowling, with individual air vents for each cylinder, was unusual for a US radial engine light aircraft.
Following his appearance in Canada, Harlem Rocker returned to the United States in August to appear at the 2008 Travers Stakes in Saratoga. Going up against one of the largest fields in recent history (12 horses), he finished 4th, beaten out by a nose for 3rd place by Pyro. He next raced in November in the Cigar Mile at Aqueduct Raceway, the same track where he won the Withers Stakes in April. Harlem Rocker faced a field of nine other horses and battled down the front stretch against Tale of Ekati.
The Type 166 was a two-bay biplane with twin wooden pontoon floats, with a water rudder fitted to the tail float, plus a stabilizing float mounted near the wingtip under each lower wing. It was powered by a nose- mounted 200 hp (149 kW) Salmson engine. A follow-on order for 20 aircraft was assembled by Westland Aircraft at its Yeovil factory.Westland History – Short 166 The Westland-built aircraft did not have provision for a torpedo, but could carry three 112 lb bombs, and were fitted to carry radio equipment.
In 2009, Court Vision ran nine times at the Grade I level, winning once and finishing third twice before a fourth-place finish in the Breeders cup Mile. On March 7, he tried racing on the dirt one last time but could only finish seventh in the Santa Anita Handicap. After a bad loss in the United Nations Stakes, he underwent surgery in July to remove his undescended testicle. He returned to the track in October, now trained by Richard Dutrow, and won the Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes by a nose over Karelian.
As they entered the stretch, Valenzuela spotted a small hole on the rail and Fraise responded with a strong drive to win by a nose over Sky Classic (ridden by Pat Day). He finished the year in the Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes, in which he was disqualified to second for interference. In the Eclipse Award voting for champion turf male, Fraise finished second to Sky Classic. Fraise returned to racing at age five, starting with a win in the Grade II Pan American Handicap at Gulfstream Park in Florida.
The 1920 Kentucky Derby was run on an overcast day on a slow track with a field of seventeen horses. Ridden by Ted Rice he won the race by a nose after staving off Upset, who showed impressive speed on the home stretch, and close third On Watch. Paul Jones proved his Derby win was not a fluke by winning the 1920 Suburban Handicap. Paul Jones raced for a total of five years and, being a gelding with no career at stud, was given to his trainer, William Garth, for use as an exercise pony.
Midnight Bisou's first start was a six furlong maiden race on October 27, 2017 at Santa Anita Park, where she went off at odds of 21-1 in a field of 11. She stalked the early pace then maneuvered between horses on the turn to move into contention. In the stretch, she started to make up ground steadily but was beaten by a nose by Dream Tree. Spawr then stepped the filly up in class by entering her in the Desi Arnaz Stakes at Del Mar on November 18.
Up front, Marlin came through the gears a bit quicker than Gordon, and took his momentum to the inside. Gordon went to block only to turn himself. The two incidents brought out the caution flag, but under the rules at the time the field continued racing at full speed back to the start/finish line, and Ward Burton pulled alongside of Marlin on the outside. Marlin, his car smoking from damage to the right front fender, beat Burton to the line by a nose, only for the red flag come out.
Head tracked the leaders before moving up to join the leaders with 300m left to run. The colt then produced a "spectacular surge" to go clear of the field and won very easily by five lengths from To-Agori-Mou, who beat Kings Lake by a nose for second place. The winning time of 1:34.5 on firm ground was the second fastest time recorded over the course. Three weeks later, Northjet contested the Prix du Moulin over 1600m at Longchamp and started the 6/10 favourite against eleven opponents.
The Knight was a conventional looking low-wing monoplane, with a fixed tailwheel landing gear, the main legs housed in trouser fairings and powered by a nose-mounted 90 hp (67 kW) Blackburn Cirrus Minor piston engine. It had an enclosed cabin with side-by-side seating for two. It had an unusual wing construction which used four spars and interspars instead of ribs. Though the wing was made of wood throughout, with a stressed plywood skin, the purpose of its novel construction was to explore methods suitable for later use with plastic materials.
T M Opera O winning the 2001 Tenno Sho (spring) In 2001, T M Opera O won two of seven starts with three second-place finishes. The highlight of this year was a repeat win in the Tenno Sho (spring), in which he defeated Meisho Doto by a nose. On June 25, T M Opera O attempted to repeat in the Takarazuka Kinen but was upset by Meisho Doto. T M Opera O had experienced severe traffic problems before swinging wide and mounting a "spectacular" closing drive that fell short by lengths.
Daiwa Major's only success in five starts as a four-year-old came on his debut when he won the Group Three Lord Derby Challenge Trophy at Nakayama in April. He then ran unplaced in the Yasuda Kinen in June and was beaten in a Group Three race at Niigata Racecourse in July. Returning in autumn, he ran unplaced in the Group Two Mainichi Okan but then displayed much improved form when he finished second by a nose to Hat Trick in the Group One Mile Championship at Kyoto Racecourse in November.
Harry Angel made his racecourse debut in a novice race (for horses with no more than one previous win) over five furlongs at Ascot Racecourse on 7 May. He finished strongly but failed by a nose to overhaul the odds-on favourite Reach High. After an absence of over four months, Harry Angel returned in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes over six furlongs at Newbury Racecourse. He was made the 2/1 favourite ahead of six opponents headed by Global Applause (National Stakes) and Legendary Lunch (Woodcote Stakes).
Trained by future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Carl Hanford, his brother Ira Hanford would be La Corredora's regular jockey. As a two-year-old, La Corredora's most important win came in the 1951 Pimlico Breeders' Stakes for trainer Alan Clark. 1952 saw Carl Hanford responsible for the three-year-old's race conditioning and she won the July 30 Monmouth Oaks by a nose in a highly competitive field that produced a blanket finish. On November 11, 1952, La Corredora won the inaugural running of the Gallorette Handicap at Pimlico Race Course.
After the Salvator Mile, Todd Pletcher said, "We'll go to the Whitney Stakes on August 5th now, if everything goes smoothly." Pletcher also planned to run Flower Alley in Saratoga's G1 Woodward Stakes as well as the Breeder's Cup Classic, run this year at Churchill Downs. On August 5, 2006, Invasor, an Argentine-bred son of Candy Stripes, won the Whitney by a nose to the surging Sun King. Flower Alley, a joint favorite in the race, made a brief run at the leading horses, then faded to come home seventh.
Nerud spent the bulk of his 44-year training career (1935–1978) as a trainer, president and general manager for William L. McKnight's Tartan Farms in Ocala, Florida. When Nerud retired from training in 1978, he remained at Tartan as manager of racing and breeding. As a trainer, Nerud first drew national attention in 1956 after prepping Switch On to win the Palm Beach and McLennan Handicaps. The following season, in 1957, Nerud lost the Kentucky Derby by a nose to Iron Liege after jockey Bill Shoemaker, aboard Gallant Man, misjudged the finish line.
The rocket boosters consisted of a nose cone, propellant chamber, butt plate, tail fins, and a single venturi. The propellant chamber held three sticks of solid- propellant and was closed at the front by a nose cap. In the center of the nose cap, there was a socket for a blasting cap that was electrically ignited by an umbilical cord attached to the booster. The bombs and the booster were placed at the end of the trough and a wooden spacer was placed between the booster and the bomb.
The NiD 640 was an all-wood high-wing cantilever monoplane powered by a nose-mounted radial engine. An enclosed cockpit for two-crew forward of the wing and a cabin for four passengers was aft. The NiD 640 was powered by Wright J-5C radial engine and was followed by 12 production aircraft designated NiD 641 powered by a Lorraine 7M Mizar radial engine. The NiD 640 was converted to an ambulance aircraft and later had a Mizar engine fitted to bring it up to 641 standard.
Tasso was in eighth place down the backstretch then moved to the outside of the field and started to close ground, catching Storm Cat in the final stride to win by a nose. Tasso's performances earned him U.S. Champion 2-Yr-Old Colt honors for 1985. Racing at age three, Tasso again made seven starts, ending the season with two wins, two seconds, and two third- place finishes. He began his 3-year-old campaign with a three-length win in the Manassa Mauler Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack.
Gallant Man is remembered primarily for his upset loss in the 1957 Kentucky Derby. He would almost certainly have won the race, but his jockey, Hall of Famer Bill Shoemaker, misjudged the finish line and stood up too early in his stirrups, which slowed Gallant Man's rush for the wire and allowed another Hall of Fame jockey, Bill Hartack riding Iron Liege, to take the win by a nose. As noted in books, in articles, and on online sites, Shoemaker's error remains one of the biggest blunders in racing history.
He started the 6/1 fourth choice in the betting behind Eagle Top, Snow Sky and Clever Cookie. After tracking the leader Romsdal, Postponed took the lead in the straight but Eagle Top, racing down the centre of the track mounted a strong late challenge. Eagle Top gained a slight lead in the final furlong, but Postponed rallied strongly to regain the lead in the last stride and won by a nose. Romsdal was three and three quarter lengths back in third ahead of Madame Chiang and Snow Sky.
Despite a massive search effort, their bodies were never found. With replacement jockey Eddie Arcaro aboard, Citation was beaten by Saggy in the 1948 Chesapeake Trial that ended the colt's seven-race win streak. In time, that loss would prove to be very important as Citation next won the Chesapeake Stakes which marked the first win of a new win streak that ended in a record setting sixteen straight wins that could instead have been twenty-four. The 1949 Chesapeake Stakes was won by Capot who defeated Slam Bang by a nose.
He returned to the track on June 24 in the Ohio Derby, where he was second by a nose to Irap. Then, on July 30, he entered the Haskell Invitational at odds of 9-1. Sharp had stated to the press that the horse had been training very well. Ridden by another new jockey, Robby Albarado, Girvin trailed by nine lengths before putting in a stretch run and defeating favorite McCracken and Brian Hernandez in a photo finish, also defeating other top 3-year-olds such as Irish War Cry and Practical Joke.
Racing at age two in 1967, Obeah won the Blue Hen Stakes at her Delaware Park Racetrack home base. Going around two turns, she ran 3rd in the Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park and second by a nose in the Jeanne d'Arc at Narragansett Park. When she was three, her best result in a major race was a second in the Firenze Handicap. At age four, she won the 1969 Delaware Handicap in early August New York Times - August 3, 1969 and then captured October's Vineland Handicap at Garden State Park.
The SEV-3 was an all-metal cantilever low-wing monoplane powered by a nose-mounted 420 hp (313 kW) Wright J-6 Whirlwind radial engine. It had two cockpits in tandem, a forward cockpit for the pilot and a rear cockpit for two passengers, both with sliding canopies. It could either be fitted with twin amphibious floats which had main wheels fitted in the floats to allow it to operate from land, or with a fixed tailwheel undercarriage with the mainwheels enclosed in large fairings.Green and Swanborough Air Enthusiast Ten, pp. 9–10.
However, Affirmed's saddle slipped during the race, leaving his jockey with almost no control. He tired to finish unplaced for the only time in his career as Exceller and jockey Willie Shoemaker defeated Seattle Slew by a nose. As a three-year-old, Affirmed won 8 of 11 starts with 2 seconds and 1 unplaced run, for earnings of $901,541. He was named Horse of the Year despite the losses to Alydar, Seattle Slew, and Exceller, and was also named the American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse.
Although still lightly regarded in a year with many quality three-year-olds competing, in 1998 Real Quiet was ridden to victory by jockey Kent Desormeaux in the Kentucky Derby. His Beyer Speed Figure recorded in the Hollywood Futurity was the highest Beyer rating of any two-year-old horse that went on to win the Derby. He then won the Preakness Stakes. In the Belmont Stakes, the third and final leg of the Triple Crown, Real Quiet lost when Victory Gallop beat him by a nose in the final stride of the race.
Designed to meet a requirement for both a civil and military utility aircraft the MFI-10 was a braced high-wing monoplane with a fixed tailwheel landing gear and a cabin for a pilot and three passengers. The aircraft made extensive use of aluminum honeycomb structure, with the wings, tail and rear fuselage made of honeycomb and the forward fuselage of welded steel tubes.Harrison Flight International 7 May 1964, p. 779. The prototype was powered by a nose-mounted 160 hp (119 kW) Lycoming O-320 engine and first flew in 1961.
Moore modeled anonymously on the covers of a number of record albums, and auditioned for the role of the elder daughter of Danny Thomas for his long-running TV show, but was turned down. Much later, Thomas explained that "she missed it by a nose... no daughter of mine could ever have a nose that small". Moore's first regular television role was as a mysterious and glamorous telephone receptionist in Richard Diamond, Private Detective. In the show her voice was heard but only her legs appeared on camera, adding to the character's mystique.
On August 16, he set an American record of 1:56 for miles while winning the Schenectady Handicap at Saratoga by a nose over Westy Hogan. He carried 131 pounds in the race, 5 pounds more than Westy Hogan. After this, he lost several races but returned to form in the Liberty Handicap on September 27, winning handily despite conceding 48 pounds to the runner-up. After another loss, he finished the season by winning the Dixie Handicap at Laurel racetrack "with ridiculous ease" over Midway and Omar Khayyam.
Although Garrett's widow later described Garrett's Miss Pawhuska as "scrawny—she looked like a jackrabbit then",Quoted in Burke "Garrett's Miss Pawhuska" Quarter Horse Journal p. 490 Garrett trained her for the track and she raced as a two- year-old and three-year-old. Her first race was the Oklahoma Futurity in 1948, where she won her qualifying heat and won the finals by a nose. The finals' start was delayed, but even after the delay, Garrett's Miss Pawhuska won, beating Savannah G, Lapped, and Red River Pride.
The SAM-14's wings had Kalman flaps. It was powered by a nose- mounted Voronezh MV-4 4-cylinder, air-cooled, inverted inline, a licence-built Renault 4Pei engine. The fuselage had a wooden girder structure and was plywood-covered forward of the rear of the cabin, under the trailing edge, and fabric covered aft. The pilot's enclosed cockpit was ahead of the wing leading edge and its five-place passenger cabin was behind him under the wing, with three windows on each side and two port side doors.
In 1989, Beach Towel won eleven of his thirteen races including the Presidential Stake, Matron Stake, and Potomac Stake and earned more than $478,000. In July 1990, he contested the Meadowlands Pace at Meadowlands Racetrack and overcame an unfavorable draw to win by a nose from Jake And Elwood.Beach Towel, in photo finish, captures Meadowlands Pace Observer-Reporter, July 14, 1990 On September 9, he lost to Jake And Elwood (who had won the Cane Pace) in the Messenger Stakes at Rosecroft Raceway. Beach Towel started favorite for Little Brown Jug on September 20.
Victoire Pisa was one of fifteen horses invited to contest the Arima Kinen on 26 December at Nakayama. Ridden for the first time by the Italian jockey Mirco Demuro he started at odds of 7.4/1 in a field which included Buena Vista, Eishin Flash, Dream Journey and Oken Bruce Lee. In front of a crowd of 120,813 Victoire Pisa was always among the leaders and moved up quickly to take the lead entering the straight. He held off the late challenge of the favourite Buena Vista to win by a nose.
He did not get another stakes race victory until October 6th, 2018, when he came in first at the Grade-2 City of Hope Mile Stakes. He came in as the 6:5 favorite and won by a nose over 2:1 Fly to Mars. Sharp Samurai had more close calls, but no victories in his 2019 season. He came in 3rd at the 2019 Grade-3 American Stakes in June and came in 2nd at the Grade-2 Del Mar Handicap in August, which was his last race of the season.
In 2011, Game On Dude ran eight times and won three races, notably the Santa Anita Handicap and the Goodwood Stakes, both at Santa Anita Park. The Santa Anita Handicap, which provided the gelding with his first Grade I win, was a controversial race. Ridden by Sutherland, he prevailed by a nose from Setsuko but had been involved in an incident in which the favorite, Twirling Candy, had been badly hampered. The result was only confirmed after a lengthy steward's inquiry and was met by boos from the crowd.
After a four- month break he returned to the track at Tokyo in October and came home sixth behind Danon Kingly in the Mainichi Okan. Later that month he contested the Swan Stakes for the second time and, as in 2018 he was narrowly defeated, going down by a nose to the four-year-old favourite Diatonic. He ended his season in the Mile Championship on 17 November when he started a 18.9/1 outsider and finished fourteenth of the seventeen runners, beaten seven and a half lengths by the winner Indy Champ.
Lure ran in the event three times winning in 1993 and finishing second twice in 1992 and 1994. In 1992 although finishing second as a three year old later that year he went on to win the Breeders' Cup Mile. In 1993 after winning this event he followed up in his next start winning the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita Park. In 1994 Lure just failed to win the event, beaten by a nose carrying 128 pounds and giving 14 pounds to the winner Nijinsky's Gold in a thrilling stretch battle.
Stormy Liberal made his first start as a five-year-old on January 29, 2017 in the Clocker's Corner Stakes at Santa Anita. Over the downhill turf course, he led from gate to wire to earn his first stakes victory by lengths. On March 4, Stormy Liberal followed up by winning the listed Joe Hernandez Stakes, again over Santa Anita's downhill turf course. Running from off the pace, he made a strong stretch run to take the lead and held off the late closing Perfectly Majestic by a nose.
These sections matched the division of the trailing edge into ailerons outboard and flaps inboard. The outer slots opened automatically on the approach of the stall, whereas the inboard slats deployed when the flaps were lowered to their single down setting. It was powered by a nose- mounted, Renault 4Pb, a four-cylinder, air-cooled, upright inline engine, though its mountings, part of the tubular fuselage structure, could accept engines with powers in the range . The exhaust was fitted with a silencer and its outlet was aft of the cabin.
The Potez 29 was a biplane powered by a nose-mounted 335 kW (450 hp) Lorraine 12Eb broad-arrow piston engine, with a fixed tailskid landing gear. Based on the earlier Potez 25, with the same wings and engine, the Potez 29 had a new fuselage with an enclosed cockpit for two crew and a cabin for five passengers. The 29 proved to be a success; it entered service with civilian airlines, and 120 were delivered to the French Air Force, mainly as an air ambulance and light transport.
At odds of 12-1, he went to the early lead then battled down the stretch with Blues Street to win by a nose. He was then transferred to the stable of Dale Romans for the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap on February 5, his first attempt at the Grade 1 level. After leading throughout most of the race, he gave way near the finish line and finished sixth. Three weeks later in the 1-mile Canadian Turf Stakes, Little Mike again went to the early lead and set solid opening fractions.
After that race, Lukas removed the blinker hood that the horse had previously worn and changed jockeys to the "up and coming" Panamanian Luis Saez. On August 24, Will Take Charge started at odds of 9.6-1 for the Grade I Travers Stakes against a field which included Orb, Palace Malice and Haskell Stakes winner Verrazano. He produced a strong late run to lead in the last stride and win by a nose over the front-running Moreno. Orb was third, Palace Malice was fourth and Verrazano was seventh of the nine runners.
Forty Niner did not run in the Belmont Stakes, but in the summer and fall, he won the important Grade 1 Travers Stakes (with Chris McCarron riding) at Saratoga Race Course and Haskell Invitational Handicap (with Laffit Pincay, Jr. aboard) at Monmouth Park over rival Seeking the Gold in both races by a nose. He then finished second to Alysheba in the Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park and won the NYRA Mile Handicap before his fourth-place finish in his final career start in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs to Alysheba.
In her first race in 1962 as a three-year-old, she won an allowance race against older males. She then ran one of her most courageous efforts in the Florida Derby, a major prep for the Kentucky Derby against some of the best colts in the country. It turned into a two horse battle between Cicada and Ridan, with Cicada losing by a nose. After she easily won the Oaks Prep (now called the Eight Belles Stakes) she was considered for the Kentucky Derby but her stablemate Sir Gaylord was entered instead, then went lame and was unable to race.
She received a standing ovation from the crowd on returning to the winner's circle. Ventura was also a stand-out winner in the Filly & Mare Sprint, winning by the largest margin of the day while finishing just 0.01 second behind the track record. Stardom Bound won the Juvenile Fillies impressively while Maram just held off Heart Shaped by a nose in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. In the Classic, the favorite was Curlin, who raced near the back of the field then made his move on the turn, striking the lead at the top of the stretch.
Despite his lack of a win that season, he went off as favourite and won by half a length. It was Rip Van Winkle's third Group One victory. Soft ground seemed to go against him on his next two starts, the Irish Champion Stakes in which he was beaten by a strong front-running ride by half-brother and stable mate Cape Blanco. Two weeks later, he was back over a mile in the QEII stakes at Ascot where he was nipped by a nose on the line by a three-year-old after an aggressive ride where he committed early.
Tail surfaces were constructed of wood with fabric covering and rotor blades were built with steel tube spars and plywood ribs with fabric covering. Accommodation was in tandem cockpits with the pilot in the rear cockpit aft of the rotor support bi-pod and the observer in the front cockpit beneath the rotor head. Power was supplied by a nose-mounted Wright R-975E-2 in a tight-fitting wide chord cowling with blisters to accommodate rocker arms. The engine was mounted with considerable nose-down angle to ensure prop- wash over the rotor to maintain rotation and ease rotor starting.
The cap of the helmet was constructed from twelve individual components riveted together. The basic form was created by four pieces: a brow band joined by a nose-to-nape band, and, on either side, a lateral band reaching from the side of the brow band to the top of the nose-to-nape band. Cutouts at the front of the brow and nose-to-nape bands functioned as eye-holes, and a wide strip of metal was riveted along the edge of the openings, perhaps to provide balance or decoration. Norihiro Yokoyama, who rode One And Only in 2014 One And Only was ridden in all of his 2014 starts by Norihiro Yokoyama. He began his second season in the Yayoi Sho (a major trial race for the Satsuki Sho) over 2000 metres at Nakayama Racecourse on 9 March. Starting at odds of 8.8/1 he raced in mid-division before producing a strong late run on the outside but failed by a nose to catch the favourite To The World. Six weeks later, over the same course and distance, the colt started 5.7/1 for the Satsuki Sho.
After the Alabama in August 1977, Northernette's owners sold a controlling interest in her to American Peter M. Brant. Her conditioning was then taken over by future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame trainer, Frank Whiteley, whose son David, as well as Shug McGaughey, were both working as his assistants. In her first start for her new connections, Northernette won an allowance race at Woodbine before shipping south to Laurel Park in Maryland, where she won the Grade III Chrysanthemum Handicap. She finished the year with a runner-up finish in the Grade II Firenze Handicap, losing by a nose.
Developed from the R.E.5 the R.E.7 was designed to carry heavier loads and also suitable for escort and reconnaissance duties. It was an-unequal span biplane with a fixed tailskid landing gear and powered by a nose-mounted 120 hp (89 kW) Beardmore engine driving a four-bladed propeller. The aircraft was built by a number of different contractors with the first aircraft operational with the Royal Flying Corps in France in early 1916. The aircraft had two open cockpits with the observer/gunner in the forward cockpit under the upper wing and the pilot aft.
Taken to Australia, Delta Blues finished third in the 2006 Caulfield Cup after racing wide throughout the race. As Gentildonna's regular jockey Yasunari Iwata was on a 4-day suspension in NHK Mile Cup he was replaced by Yuga Kawada. Verxina was preferred in the betting, But Gentildonna won by five lengths to claim the second leg of the Triple Crown. After a break of almost four months, Gentildonna returned to contest the Rose Stakes at Hanshin and won by one and a half lengths from Verxina. At Kyoto on 14 October, Gentildonna completed the Triple Crown and defeated Verxina for the fourth time in a row when prevailing by a nose in the Shuka Sho.
Tiago then rebounded with a score in the Grade 2 Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park on July 14. In this race, the colt maintained a stalking position until the stretch, where he powered through a gap along the rail to win. Tiago was to make his first start against older horses in the August 19 Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar Racetrack but was scratched the morning of the race due to trainer John Shirreffs's apprehension about the Polytrack surface. On September 29, he won the Grade 1 Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap at Santa Anita Park by a nose over Awesome Gem.
In November he started favourite in his third attempt to win the Mile Championship. He again encountered trouble in running before staying on strongly in the closing stages to finish fifth, one and a half lengths behind the three-year-old winner Persian Knight. On his final racecourse appearance Isla Bonita started the 3.1/1 second choice in the betting behind Mozu Ascot in an eighteen-runner field for the Hanshin Cup on 24 December. He ended his track career with a victory as he prevailed by a nose from the seven-year-old Dance Director.
In the Kentucky Oaks, run on April 30 (the day before the Kentucky Derby), Evening Jewel faced heavily favored Blind Luck. Beaten by a nose by Blind Luck earlier in the year in the Las Virgenes Stakes, she looked to turn the tables on that rival. Evening Jewel drew post 11 for the Kentucky Oaks, and was installed at 10-to-1 odds in the morning line and ridden by regular jockey Kent Desormeaux. In the Kentucky Oaks, after leading for most of the way, she was again beaten a heartbreaking nose by eventual champion 3-year-old filly Blind Luck.
On his three-year-old debut, Encke carried 126 pounds in a handicap race over ten furlongs at Sandown Park in July. Ridden for the first time by Mickael Barzalona he took the lead two furlongs from the finish and held on to win by half a length and a neck from Ginger Jack and Tropical Beat. Later in the month, Encke was moved up in class for the Group Three Gordon Stakes at Goodwood Racecourse. The race developed into a protracted struggle between Encke and Noble Mission, who raced together throughout the final furlong before the latter won by a nose.
Lagunette took the lead in the straight before being headed by Sarah Siddons inside the last 200 metres but rallied to defeat the Irish-trained filly by a nose after what Timeform described as a "tremendous battle". Theia finished fifth, whilst Pawneese and Riverqueen ran poorly in seventh and ninth places. On her final appearance of the season, Lagunette ran in France's most prestigious race, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on 3 October. Ridden by Alain Lequeux she started at odds of 21/1 and finished fourteenth of the twenty runners behind Ivanjica.
A mock taxidermy of a rhinograde, using its "nasorium" to fish at the Musée zoologique de la ville de Strasbourg. Rhinogradentia is a fictitious order of mammal invented by German zoologist Gerolf Steiner. Members of the order, known as rhinogrades or snouters, are characterized by a nose-like feature called a "nasorium", which evolved to fulfill a wide variety of functions in different species. Steiner also created a fictional persona, naturalist Harald Stümpke, who is credited as author of the 1957 book Bau und Leben der Rhinogradentia (translated into English in 1967 as The Snouters: Form and Life of the Rhinogrades).
She entered him in the late September Awesome Again Stakes, where he earned his first Grade I win and free entry fees for the Breeders' Cup Classic. At the Classic in early November, going off as the second favorite, the horse won by a nose. With the win, Ritvo became the first woman trainer to win the Breeders' Cup Classic, and was also only the fifth woman trainer to win any Breeders' Cup race. Ritvo's fellow trainers in the race included Americans D. Wayne Lukas, Todd Pletcher, Bill Mott, and Bob Baffert, as well as Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien.
The Diana Stakes over nine furlongs at Saratoga Race Course on 21 July start favourite ahead of six opponents including New Money Honey, A Raving Beauty (Just A Game Stakes), Proctor's Ledge (Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes). Sistercharlie raced in fifth place before making a strong late challenge on the outside and took the lead in the final stride to win by a nose from the outsider Ultra Brat. Chad Brown commented "This isn't her ideal distance, nor was the mile and a sixteenth in the Jenny Wiley. But just with sheer class, heart, and ability, she can do it".
Snow Sky and Madame Chiang were unable to quicken, but Eagle Top maintained his momentum on the outside, and moved level with the leader entering the final furlong. Eagle Top gained the advantage 100 yards from the finish but Postponed rallied strongly and the two four-year-old colts crossed the line together. The photo finish showed that Postponed had prevailed by a nose (the narrowest possible margin) with a gap of almost four lengths back to Romsdal in third. Madame Chiang took fourth ahead of Clever Cookie and Snow Sky, with Dylan Mouth eight lengths drift in last place.
He started the 4/1 second favourite behind the Coronation Cup winner Daliapour, with the other runners including Caitano (Aral-Pokal, Gran Premio del Jockey Club), Lycitus (Prix du Lys) and Murghem (Geoffrey Freer Stakes). Dettori settled the colt in fifth place before moving up on the outside on the turn into the straight. He took a narrow lead a furlong and a half from the finish and rallied after being overtaken by Williams News to take the lead in the final stride and win by a nose, with a gap of two and three quarter lengths back to Daliapour in third.
Although a 1-5 odds-on favorite at Pimlico in Baltimore, he finished fourth to longshot Bee Bee Bee, after rain made the going sloppy. Turcotte later said that Riva Ridge "would never feel secure on an off track," indicating the track condition likely factored into the loss. In the -mile (2.4 km) Belmont Stakes, Riva Ridge defeated nine other horses with a seven-length victory. Later in his three-year-old season, Riva Ridge won the Hollywood Derby by a nose, but then suffered five straight losses, two of which were to eventual champion three-year-old male Key to the Mint.
The 1919 Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels football team represented Oglethorpe University in the sport of American football during the 1919 college football season. Games were won and lost by a nose with the forward pass being a constant struggle for the Stormy Petrels. The season, despite heavy losses, put Oglethorpe on the map through their athletic prowess and gentlemanly conduct, which set Oglethorpe up for membership in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) after the following year, and the difficult schedule also prepared them for their tough opponents in years to come. The season was especially tough due to the lack of home games.
He was the son of the 1895 Kentucky Derby winner Halma. Raced and trained by McDowell, at age two Alan-a-Dale won three of his four starts but the following year health problems kept him out of racing until Kentucky Derby time. Ridden by future Hall of Fame jockey Jimmy Winkfield, the official Kentucky Derby website says that Alan-a-Dale had a lead of six lengths and despite going lame down the stretch, "carried on with flawless courage to win by a nose." This injury kept Alan-a-Dale out of racing for the rest of the year.Smithsonia.
Frederic Charles Smerlas (born April 8, 1957) is a former American football nose tackle who was a five-time NFL Pro Bowl selection during a 14-year career as a nose tackle with the Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots. Smerlas, of Greek-American descent, graduated from Waltham High School in 1975, where he was a star football player and wrestler. He became a defensive lineman for Boston College before embarking on an NFL career. Smerlas' 1990 autobiography, By a Nose, recounts his 11 years with the Bills and their climb from cellar-dwellers to Super Bowl contenders.
On February 11, Shackleford was seventh out of a field of eleven horses in the Grade 1 Donn Handicap run at Gulfstream Park. Ruler on Ice also ran and finished eighth. On April 7, 2012, Shackleford ran in the $400,000 Grade 1 Carter Handicap at seven furlongs at Aqueduct Racetrack. Longshot Jackson Bend won by a nose over Caleb's Posse, with Shackleford another length and a half back in third. Returning to Churchill Downs on Derby Day, May 5, 2012, Shackleford raced in the $400,000 Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes at seven furlongs on the dirt.

The SR22 is a low-wing cantilever monoplane of composite construction, featuring fixed (non- retractable) tricycle landing gear with a castering nose wheel and steering via differential braking on the main wheels. It is powered by a nose-mounted 310 hp (231 kW) Continental IO-550-N piston engine. The four-seat cabin is accessed through doors on either side of the fuselage.
Down the stretch, Clem started to close ground and actually got a head in front before Bold Ruler rallied in the final strides to win by a nose. Bold Ruler made his next start on July 18 in the Monmouth Handicap, also at a distance of 10 furlongs while carrying 134 pounds. He went straight to the lead and set an even tempo, then "coasted home" to win by three-quarters of a length over Sharpsburg. Despite the apparent ease of the win, Fitzsimmons called it a "real hard race" and said that he might bypass the upcoming Brooklyn Handicap.
Under jockey Jorge Velásquez, he came from last place to defeat a strong field that included heavy favorite Chief's Crown, Gate Dancer,who finished 2nd by a head, Turkoman, and Vanlandingham. Proud Truth returned to racing at age four in 1986. Of his eight starts, his best performances were a second by a nose in the Grade I Gulfstream Park Handicap and a win in his turf debut in the Tidal Handicap at Belmont Park. He came out of his final race with an injury and was retired to stud duty at Darby Dan Farm for the 1987 season.

The MH.1521 Broussard was designed to meet a requirement for a lightweight liaison and observation aircraft. It is a braced high-wing monoplane with twin vertical tail surfaces. It has a fixed tailwheel landing gear and is powered by a nose-mounted Pratt & Whitney R-985 radial piston engine. Preserved MH-1521 Broussard at AirExpo in 2007 A smaller Salmson 8 As.04 powered prototype aircraft, the MH.152, was first flown on 12 June 1951; it had room for a pilot and four passengers but was too small and underpowered to meet the Army requirement.
In August, Colonel John won the Travers Stakes by a nose over Mambo in Seattle and other well-regarded contenders such as Pyro, Harlem Rocker, and Macho Again in a time of 2:03.20. Colonel John was a finalist for the Eclipse Award's American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse for 2008. After not racing since December 2008, he came back on July 31, 2009, to win the Wickerr Stakes at one mile over the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course at Del Mar Racetrack ridden by Garrett Gomez. He then ran 5th in the Pacific Classic Stakes to the upset winner Richard's Kid.
Sent off as the bettors' heavy favorite, Cavalcade was towards the back of the field before moving into contention behind Discovery and the filly Mata Hari on the final turn. He took the lead in the straight and drew away to win the race by more than three lengths over Discovery with Time Clock a disappointing seventh. After Time Clock's poor showing, his handlers replaced him in the Preakness Stakes with the third stablemate, High Quest, who had won April's Wood Memorial. High Quest won the Preakness, beating Cavalcade by a nose with Discovery in third place.
Mendoza in the Amazonas state, Venezuela Mendoza was a contestant in the 2012 season of the NBC reality competition series The Celebrity Apprentice. In episode 3, "How Much is That Celebrity in the Window?", she was the winning project manager of her team on a task to create two themed living window displays for Ivanka Trump's clothing and accessory line, winning $20,000 for her charity, the Latino Commission on AIDS. Mendoza notes in Episode 11, "Winning by a Nose" that she holds the record for being brought back to the final boardroom, having done so six times by that episode.
This was also a feature of the Hémiptère, in contrast to the identical, swept wings of the Peyret glider. Apart from its tandem wing, the Hémiptère was a conventional 1930s light aircraft, with a short, flat sided fuselage, a single open cockpit and a fixed tailskid undercarriage. It was powered by a nose-mounted (40 hp (30 kW) 4-cylinder Train engine. The front wing was mounted low on the fuselage and was unswept and of constant chord c = 1.30 m (4 ft 3 in), though with well rounded tips and with a generous trailing edge root fillet.
The two met again in the Santa Anita Handicap a week later, where Rosemont won by a nose. The defeat was devastating to Smith and Howard, and was widely attributed in the press to a jockey error. Pollard, who had not seen Rosemont over his shoulder until too late, was blind in one eye due to an accident during a training ride, a fact he had hidden throughout his career. A week after this defeat Seabiscuit won the San Juan Capistrano Handicap by 7 lengths in track record time of 1:48 for the mile event.
Win Bright settled behind the leaders took the lead 150 metres from the finish and held off the late challenge of Magic Wand to win by a nose. After the race Matsuoka said "It was very, very good because his last two starts were not first-three performances but the horse's condition has been going up since he got here so were very happy. We had a very good day here in April so it was very memorable to come here. Sha Tin suits the horse very well because he likes the right-handed course in Japan, so it is very suitable".
When the field was finally released, Good Gamble broke inward and bumped with Black Helen. The pair then rushed up on the outside to join Bloodroot in a group behind the early pacesetter, Vicaress. When Vicaress tired after a mile, Bloodroot made her move and opened a length- and-a-half lead on Good Gamble, with Black Helen a length further back in third. In deep stretch, Black Helen cut over to the rail and closed ground to move into second, then won the race by a nose in the final strides after Bloodroot's jockey eased up on his filly.
He failed by a nose to catch Mucho Macho Man, with Declaration of War a head away in third place. On November 29, he started the 12-5 second favorite behind Game On Dude in the Clark Handicap over nine furlongs at Churchill Downs. Settled in midfield by Saez, he produced a sustained run in the straight to catch Game On Dude in the final strides and won by a head. He finished the year as the number two-ranked horse in purse wins in the US behind Mucho Macho Man but ahead of both Game on Dude and Orb.
Into the stretch Curalina battled with I'm a Chatterbox, with one final surge Curalina was about to pass I'm a Chatterbox but I'm a Chatterbox hit Curalina and made her trip so I'm a Chatterbox won by a nose over Curalina. Then after the race Saratoga stewards ruled I'm a Chatterbox came into Curalina's path deep in the stretch and disqualified the top finisher to second. Curalina finished her 3-year-old season with a 3rd in the GI Alabama Stakes, a 2nd against older mares in the GI Beldame Stakes, and a strong 3rd in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff.
Approaching the final furlong the race looked to be devolving into a three-way struggle between Lady Aurelia racing down the centre of the track, Battaash on the leader's right and Marsha racing up the stands-side rail. Battaash dropped from contention and the two fillies crossed the line together resulting in a photo finish. Dettori celebrated his presumed victory by punching the air and waving his whip to the crowd but the judge's decision was that Marsha had prevailed by a nose. At Chantilly in October, Marsha attempted to repeat her 2016 success in the Prix de l'Abbaye.
I'll Have Another began his three-year-old season by winning the Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita on February 4, as a 43/1 outsider. In April, he won the Santa Anita Derby, staying on gamely to beat the favorite Creative Cause by a nose. I'll Have Another's lead pony in the Kentucky Derby post parade on May 5, 2012 was the retired gelding Lava Man, whom Doug O'Neill had trained previously. As of Derby Day 2012, Lava Man was the 27th-leading Thoroughbred money earner of all time, having won $5,268,706 in his racing career.
On his return to competition, Behrens won again then in July at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, won the Dwyer Stakes. In the August Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, Behrens finished second by a nose to Deputy Commander, then in September scored a 5¾ length win in the Pegasus Handicap at the Meadowlands Racetrack in New Jersey in which he beat a field that included the heavily favored Touch Gold. In that year's Breeders' Cup Classic, Behrens disappointed his backers with a seventh- place finish. At age five Behrens had his best season in racing.
Other contenders included Grape Tree Road (Prix de Suresnes), High Baroque (Chester Vase), L'Africain Bleu (Prix de l'Avre), Arbatax (Prix Hocquart). Starting at odds of 9.3/1, Ragmar was held up by Mosse towards the rear of the field before making progress in the straight. He took the lead 200 metres from the finish and held on to win by a nose and a short neck from Polaris Flight and Le Destin with Helissio in fifth. Four weeks later the colt was matched against older horses for the first time in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and started 5.7/1 third favourite behind Swain and Helissio.
Commes launched a strong late challenge on the inside but Castle Lady held on to win by a nose with East a length and a half back in third place. After the race Pantall said that the filly would not be moved up in distance commenting "She won't stay the Diane trip, and we'll certainly look at the Prix Jacques Le Marois, with maybe the Coronation Stakes in between. She doesn't have a lot of experience, and it's quite something for her to find herself in front and then fight all the way to the death. She still has more physical progress to make, and I think there's more to come".
After a brief layoff, Court Vision returned in the Colonial Turf Cup on June 24 at Colonial Downs, finishing fourth on a turf course softened by heavy rain. On July 19 when racing on a firm turf course, he improved to finish second in the Grade II Virginia Derby, losing by a nose to Gio Ponti. Mott decided to switch the colt back to dirt for the Travers Stakes, but Court Vision finished sixth after a wide trip. On October 4, Mott switched Court Vision back to turf in the Jamaica Handicap at Aqueduct, where he beat Gio Ponti by of a length after an eventful trip.
Lady Eli made her racing debut at Saratoga on August 25 as the favorite in a maiden race at miles on the turf. She settled in the middle of the field but was blocked when she tried to make her move on the turn. When she finally got clear with an eighth of a mile to go, she accelerated rapidly and won by a nose. "She was training up to her first race in Saratoga lights out, so we had very high hopes for her — even the layperson could watch her train and see she was training better than other horses there", owner Hanley would later say.
The fourth and final match between To-Agori-Mou and Kings Lake came in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville Racecourse on 16 August. To-Agori-Mou evened the score, beating his rival by a nose, but neither colt was any match for the French-trained four-year-old Northjet, who won easily by five lengths. Later that month, To- Agori-Mou was matched against Moorestyle, the top-rated European racehorse of 1980, at two pounds worse than weight-for-age in the Waterford Crystal Mile at Goodwood. Starkey tracked Lester Piggott on Moorestyle before moving past the older horse in the straight and opening up a three-length advantage.
With two furlongs left to run, Ghanaati accelerated past Cuis Ghaire to take the lead as Rainbow View and Serious Attitude began to struggle. In the final furlong, Ghanaati established a clear advantage and won by one and a half lengths from Cuis Ghaire, with the outsider Super Sleuth finishing strongly to take third by a nose from Heart Shaped. Rainbow View came next ahead of Penny's Gift and Serious Attitude. The winning time of 1:34.22 was a record for the race and was 1.66 seconds faster than that recorded by Sea The Stars in the 2000 Guineas over the same course and distance the previous day.
Apart from the structure the Snark was a conventional looking low-wing four-seat cabin monoplane, powered by a nose-mounted 130 hp (97 kW) de Havilland Gipsy Major piston engine. Registered G-ADDL the Snark first flew from Cambridge on 16 December 1934 flown by de Bruyne. Though stressed plywood skinned aircraft had been built before, it was claimed at the time that the Snark was the first to have been designed with full stress calculations, including loads carried by both wing and fuselage skins. This led to a high loaded/unloaded weight ratio of 1.82; the similarly engined, almost exactly contemporary 3/4 seat Miles Falcon had achieved 1.62.
The photo-finish showed Jacqueline Quest the winner by a nose from Special Duty with Gile Na Greine and Sent From Heaven, both of whom had continued to race along the rail, a short-head and half a length away in third and fourth. The 66/1 outsider Distinctive came next ahead of Music Show, the best finisher of those who had raced down the centre. The racecourse stewards immediately called an inquiry and reversed the placings of the first two finishers, ruling that Jacqueline Quest's interference had prevented Special Duty from winning the race. Jacqueline Quest's trainer Henry Cecil admitted that the decision was "probably" a fair one.
On 1 November, Toast of New York was the only international entrant for the thirty- first running of the Breeders' Cup Classic on the dirt track at Santa Anita Park. He started at odds of 12/1 behind the American three-year-olds Shared Belief, Tonalist, California Chrome, and Bayern. Toast of New York tracked the leader, Bayern, throughout the race before making a strong challenge in the straight. He reduced Bayern's advantage throughout the closing stages but failed by a nose to overhaul the American colt, with California Chrome finishing a neck away in third and Shared Belief a further three and a half lengths away in fourth.
After finishing fourth in the Futurity Stakes at Sheepshead Bay Race Track, he was bought by noted Kentucky horseman, John E. Madden and in a race for older horses in September, defeated the 1896 Kentucky Derby winner Ben Brush. As a three-year-old, Plaudit was ridden by future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame jockey, Willie Simms in the 24th edition of the Kentucky Derby. Plaudit came from behind with a powerful stretch drive to catch the betting favorite Lieber Karl and win by a nose. In 1898 Plaudit won four of his eight races and finished second in the other four, notably in the Latonia Derby.
A month later at the same course, The Wonder contested the Grade I Californian Stakes. He was in last place, more than fifteen lengths behind the leaders in the early stages, but produced a strong late run to win by a nose from Prince Spellbound with Poley in third place. The Wonder's winning run came to an end when he finished seventh, as the 11-10 favourite, behind John Henry in the American Handicap on 4 July. The horse returned to form in August to finish second to Bates Motel in the San Diego Handicap, but then finished unplaced behind Tolomeo in the Budweiser Million later that month.
Saratoga Dew (foaled 1989 in New York) is an American Thoroughbred Champion racehorse. Bred by Penny Chenery , owner of Secretariat, and raced by Charles F. Engel, in 1992 Saratoga Dew became the first New York-bred horse to win an Eclipse Award. Trained by Gary Sciacca and ridden by Herb McCauley in her major races, en route to earning 1992 American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly honors, Saratoga Dew won eight times. In top level races she was second by a nose in the Alabama Stakes then scored wins in the Grade 1 Gazelle Handicap and Beldame Stakes and the Grade 2 Comely Stakes.
Hitchman 2006, p30 However, these flights were curtailed by a nose leg collapse due to an inferior nosewheel strut which had been fitted only for the static display and not replaced with the correct item before the first flight. Although the airframe was repaired and modified, the directors considered the future of the Atlantic at length. An estimate was prepared of the projected development costs and this totalled in excess of £100,000, so that the break-even point required the sale of 300 aircraft. Since maximum sales were envisaged as probably 100 at the most, and with no outside financial help, development was reluctantly abandoned.
The centre-section was joined by a cabane of three inverted V-struts from the upper fuselage, one vertical and one backward-leaning to the forward spar and the other, vertical, to the rear. The first AT, known as the AT.35 was powered by a nose-mounted , three-cylinder Anzani 3A2 radial engine. The fuselage was built around a triangular section girder which provided a backbone on which transverse frames were mounted to define the ovoid section, ply-skinned exterior. There were two tandem seats in open cockpits with windscreens, the passenger placed below the wing at the centre of gravity and the pilot behind just under the trailing edge.
With much talk by racing fans and the media as to who was the best filly, on June 17, 1972, a 1⅛ mile Match race was held at Hollywood Park Racetrack. With a $250,000 winner-take-all purse at stake, 53,575 spectators watched Typecast and Bill Shoemaker lose to Convenience and Jerry Lambert by a nose. Typecast then won over colts in the 1½ mile Hollywood Invitational Turf Handicap and defeated colts again at two miles in the Sunset Handicap. Her handlers also sent her to New York where she took on the colts again, finishing second in the Manhattan Handicap and winning the prestigious Man o' War Stakes.
Following his departure from Chester, Hunt signed for League Two club Mansfield Town on a free transfer on 23 May 2017. He made his Mansfield debut three weeks into the new campaign, playing the whole match in a 3–1 loss to Lincoln City in the EFL Trophy. Hunt was originally second choice left-back to Malvind Benning at the start of the season, but cemented his place a first-team regular from September through to December 2017, with Mansfield manager Steve Evans stating Hunt was "in front of Benning by a nose". Following a change of management, Hunt made just three appearances during the second half of the season.
After being restrained towards the rear of the field, he made rapid progress on the outside in the straight. He overtook the favourite Cracksman inside the last furlong, but was caught in the final strides by the outsider Wings of Eagles and beaten three-quarters of a length into second place. The colt was then dropped in distance and matched against older horses in the Eclipse Stakes over ten furlongs at Sandown Park on 8 July. He was made the 7/4 favourite, but lost his chance after being badly hampered and finished fourth behind Ulysses who won by a nose from Barney Roy.
Withdrawn from the Victoria Derby and given several months off to strengthen and develop, Vin De Dance returned with fourth and sixth placings over 1400 and 1600 metres in late January and early February. He moved into Derby contention with a fighting third in the Avondale Guineas. The fifth favourite for the Derby at $9.90, Vin De Dance was handy throughout the 2400-metre race and loomed as a major threat around the home turn. He hit the lead inside the last 200 metres, but was joined by Mongolianconqueror in a desperate two-horse battle to the finish that Vin De Dance won by a nose.
Alydar got his nose in front at mid-stretch, but just as Affirmed appeared to tire, Cauthen went to a left-handed whip, something he had never done before in his eight rides on Affirmed. Affirmed won by a nose to become racing's 11th (and last winner for 37 years until American Pharoah won in 2015), Triple Crown winner. After the third slowest start in Belmont Stakes history, they raced the fastest last mile in Belmont Stakes history, in 1:14, the mile in 1:37 and finished in 2:26 . It was, at the time, the third fastest Belmont ever, behind Secretariat and Gallant Man.
He just held off a late challenge from Pouvoir Absolu to prevail by a nose in a photo finish. Johnston commented "It wasn't the idea to make the running and Jukebox Jury is not the ideal horse for it, so we were delighted when Kasbah Bliss went on. We have had our eyes on the Canadian International since he won at Haydock, but for the moment we'll keep all our options open". Jukebox Jury was moved up to Group 1 level when he was sent to Germany for the Preis von Europa over 2400 metres at Cologne on 27 September in which he again faced older opponents.
The gelding ended his season with a run in the British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot Racecourse on 19 October in which he started a 20/1 outsider. The field was headed by the Ascot Gold Cup winner Estimate and included several other top stayers including Saddler's Rock (Goodwood Cup, Doncaster Cup), Harris Tweed (John Porter Stakes) Ahzeemah (Lonsdale Cup) and Times Up (Doncaster Cup). In a tactical change, Murtagh restrained the horse in seventh place before making a forward move in the straight. He stayed on strongly in the closing stages, caught the leader Harris Tweed on the line and won by a nose.
Gantry was another five and a half lengths back in the third. The time was 1:21 on a fast track. On Memorial Day, May 28, 2012, Shackleford raced in what analysts called the deepest field of the year featuring favorites To Honor and Serve, Caleb's Posse, Jackson Bend and Caixa Eletronica in the $750,000 Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap (known by most as the Met Mile run at one mile on the dirt at Belmont Park). Shackleford had just enough left to withstand the furious late rush of Caleb's Posse, stopping the clock in 1:33 1/5 over the fast track to win by a nose.
After claiming the Hollywood Gold Cup, Hollywood Invitational Turf Handicap, San Juan Capistrano Handicap, Sunset Handicap, and Oak Tree Invitational Stakes, Exceller had his crowning moment. With Bill Shoemaker in the saddle, he came from 22 lengths back to beat Triple Crown winners Seattle Slew and Affirmed in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Affirmed's saddle had slipped, effectively taking him out of the race, and Seattle Slew had hung up almost suicidal fractions on the lead, but Exceller still powered through the Belmont Park mud to win by a nose. Exceller came back again at age six and managed some placings, but was not quite the same horse.
On a rainy day, and a sloppy but sealed track, Kent Desormeaux restrained the colt well behind the very fast pace set by Nyquist and Uncle Lino. Exaggerator began to make progress on the inside approaching the final turn before being switched to the outer to make his challenge in the straight. He overtook Nyquist approaching the final furlong and drew away in the closing stages to win by three and a half lengths. The outsider Cherry Wine, who had hit his head on the starting gate and was second-to-last for much of the race finished strongly to deprive Nyquist of second by a nose.
Sent off by bettors as the second choice to Saratoga Dew, Paseana started from the difficult post position #14 at the far outside but won the most important race of her career by four lengths. Her 1992 performances earned her the Eclipse Award for American Champion Older Female Horse. In 1993, the six-year-old mare won two more Grade I races, capturing the Apple Blossom Handicap and Spinster Stakes, then finished second by a nose to Hollywood Wildcat in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Despite her loss in the Distaff, Paseana's 1993 performances earned her a second consecutive Eclipse Award for American Champion Older Female Horse.
Heart's Cry returned in October to finish sixth in the Autumn Tenno Sho, in which he was ridden for the first time by Christophe Lemaire, before running in the Japan Cup a month later. Held up in the early stages, he was still fourteenth of the eighteen runners turning into the straight but then finished strongly and failed by a nose to catch the British runner Alkaased who won in a record time of 2:22.1. The beaten runners included Zenno Rob Roy, Ouija Board, Warrsan, Bago and Better Talk Now. On 25 December, Heart's Cry was one of sixteen runners invited to contest the Arima Kinen.
She then faced off with Blind Luck for the sixth time in the July 16 Grade II Delaware Handicap, finishing second by a nose after a prolonged stretch battle while giving away two pounds. The third-place finisher, 2010 Delaware Handicap winner Life at Ten, was eighteen lengths further back in third. After that defeat, Havre de Grace made her first start against males in the Grade I Woodward Stakes on September 3 at Saratoga. She was sent off as the favorite and won by 1 1/2 lengths over Flat Out, joining the 2009 American Horse of the Year, Rachel Alexandra, as the only female horses to win the race.
He tracked the leaders before finishing strongly but failed by a nose to overhaul the odds-on favourite Positive. At Newmarket Racecourse on 28 September Kameko started 6/5 favourite for the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes over one mile. Murphy positioned the colt just behind the leaders before going to the front in the last quarter mile but he was caught near the finish and beaten a neck by the Aidan O'Brien- trained outsider Royal Dornoch. The Group 1 Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster Racecourse on 26 October attracted an unusual five-day entry of twelve, with Kameko matched against eleven colts from the O'Brien stable.
On his first appearance as a three-year-old, Mariacci started 11/10 favourite against sixteen opponents in the Prix Greffulhe over 2100 metres at Longchamp on 6 April. Rivases employed exaggerated waiting tactics, delaying his challenge until the last 200 metres but Mariacci maintained his unbeaten record, winning by a nose and a head from Good Point and Top Gear. On 18 May, over the same course and distance, Mariacci faced Green Dancer again in the Prix Lupin. The two colts engaged in a prolonged struggle in the straight, and Green Dancer inflicted Mariacci's first defeat as he prevailed by three quarters of a length.
Gallant Fox and Whichone met again in August in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga, but in a huge upset, they finished second and third to 100/1 outsider Jim Dandy, who appeared ideally suited for the muddy track and won by three lengths. Fitzsimmons blamed the state of the ground for the colt's defeat and claimed that he had only run on the insistence of his owner. In the Lawrence Realization Stakes at Belmont Park in September, Gallant Fox, by then generally acknowledged as the champion of the year, defeated Questionnaire by a nose. His win took his earnings to $317,865, surpassing the world record held since 1923 by Zev.
Three weeks after his win at Chantilly, Mouktar was sent to the Curragh to contest the Irish Derby against a field which included Law Society, Triptych, Damister and Baillamont. Mouktar was accompanied by his regular traveling companion, a pony which helped to soothe his nervous disposition. He started the 9/4 second favourite but after taking the lead early in the straight he faded in the last two furlongs and finished seventh of the thirteen runners behind Law Society. In September, Mouktar ran in the Prix Niel at Longchamp, and won by a nose from Saint Estephe to whom he was conceding two pounds.
The colt was then moved up sharply in class to contest the Grade I Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on April 12. He took the lead from the start before being overtaken in the straight and finishing third behind Danza and Ride On Curlin. Rosie Napravnik was his jockey when Bayern contested the Derby Trial Stakes at Churchill Downs two weeks later. He led from the start and prevailed by a nose over Embellishing Bob but was demoted to second for causing interference to the runner-up. On May 17, the colt was moved up to the highest level for the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course.
Alkaased lost ground at the start as Dettori, on instructions from Cumani, tracked across from a wide draw to race on the inside. He raced in twelfth place before moving up to fifth place on the turn into the straight. Tap Dance City attempted to make all the running, as he had done in 2003 and was still four lengths clear with 400 metres to run but was overtaken by Alkaased and Zenno Rob Roy 200 metres from the finish. Alkaased gained the advantage and held off the late challenge of Heart's Cry on the inside to win by a nose, with Zenno Rob Roy one and three quarter lengths back in third ahead of Lincoln and Ouija Board.
In an era when horse racing ranked second in popularity with Americans to Major League Baseball, the match race was much written and talked about and drew a record crowd that helped make the fledgling Del Mar race track a success. It was the first nationwide broadcast of a thoroughbred race by NBC radio. Many racing experts felt that Ligaroti was not in the same class as Seabiscuit, but the two horses battled head to head with Seabiscuit winning by a nose. The Binglin Stable partnership ended in 1953 as a result of a liquidation of assets by Bing Crosby to raise the funds to pay the federal and state inheritance taxes on his late wife's estate.
The first Mazda Savanna went on sale in September 1971 and remained in production until 1977. It was sold as the Mazda RX-3 internationally when installed with the rotary engine and was otherwise largely identical to the inline-four-equipped Mazda Grand Familia. Externally the Savanna and export RX-3 was differentiated from its piston engines sibling by a nose panel with dual round headlights and a more prominent and pointed honeycomb grille, and round tail lights on the rear of sedans and coupés. A station wagon version, the RX-3 Sports Wagon, was sold for just one year in the U.S., from 1972 to 1973, when it was replaced by the Luce/RX-4 wagon.
On June 11, Lava Man returned to the California race circuit with a second-place finish in the Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap, won by After Market in the excellent time of 1:58.77, just off the course record. His connections were pleased at the result after the layoff, especially considering Lava Man six pounds more than the winner. On June 30, Lava Man won his third consecutive Hollywood Gold Cup, beating A.P. Xcellent by a nose after dueling down the stretch. Lava Man's third consecutive Gold Cup matched Native Diver's three-peat of 1965–1967 and set a new course record for 1 miles on the new Hollywood Park "Cushion Track" synthetic dirt surface.
The early part of Blacks A Fake’s ten-year-old season was highlighted by a third Gold Coast Cup; however, he was overshadowed by Mr Feelgood, who defeated him three times in Brisbane including the Queensland Pacing Championship (albeit with better barrier draws). He went to Menangle in late November for a fourth attempt at the Miracle Mile, the biggest Australian race to have eluded him. From a good barrier draw, he led soon after the start, with Smoken Up outside him. The two horses led throughout the trip and finished locked together; however, Smoken Up denied Blacks A Fake his first Miracle Mile by a nose in an Australasian record time of 1:50.3.
Our Flight is a Thoroughbred racehorse who won the New Zealand Derby in 1984, one of the very few fillies to have done so in the history of the race. Trained at Levin by Errol Skelton, the filly didn't show a great deal as a two-year-old but quickly proved herself as the champion three-year-old of the 1983–84 season. Travelling down to the Guineas meeting at Riccarton on the back of two impressive victories at Trentham, Our Flight was beaten by a nose in the 2000 Guineas before asserting her dominance over the fillies in the 1000 Guineas the following Saturday. Shortly after she added the Levin Classic and Eulogy Stakes.
Street Sense and Any Given Saturday were two of the notable horses that competed over the Tampa Bay Downs surface in the 2006-2007 racing season, with Street Sense defeating his rival by a nose in the Tampa Bay Derby. More recently, 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, Eclipse Award turf champion Gio Ponti, Belmont Stakes and Breeders' Cup Classic winner Drosselmeyer, Breeders' Cup Classic winner Fort Larned, Eclipse Award winner Tepin, Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming and Belmont winner Tapwrit have raced at Tampa Bay Downs. The Silks Poker Room opened on December 13, 2003. Tampa Bay Downs has 28 stakes scheduled for the 2018-2019 meeting, including six that are graded.
Exaggerator began his racing career by finishing fifth behind Nyquist in a five-furlong maiden race at Santa Anita Park on June 5. On July 26 at Del Mar Racetrack Exaggerator started favorite for a maiden over six furlongs and recorded his first success, coming from well off the pace to take the lead in the final stride and win by a nose from Miner's Light. The colt was then stepped up in class for the Grade II Saratoga Special Stakes over six and a half furlongs at Saratoga Race Course. Racing for the first time outside California his final preparation for the race was handled by Desormeaux's assistant Julie Clark and he was ridden by Junior Alvarado.
Jimmy Choux had an extraordinary 2010–11 season, winning the Hawke's Bay Guineas, New Zealand 2000 Guineas, Great Northern Guineas, Wellington Stakes and Waikato Guineas to secure hot Derby favouritism. His only defeats were when he was beaten by a nose by Fiddler in the Wanganui Guineas on a very heavy track in his first start of the season, and in the Levin Classic, where he was eased out to finish a long last due to cardiac arrhythmia. But while there were no arguments over his class, many doubted whether Jimmy Choux could sustain that brilliance and clear superiority over 2400m. His pedigree certainly suggested he would be restricted to races over no more than a mile.
On 17 April, Air Express began his second season in the Craven Stakes (a major trial race for the 2000 Guineas) at Newmarket is which he started at odds of 8/1 and finished fourth behind Desert Story, Grapeshot and Cape Cross. Although he bypassed the English 2000 Guineas Air Express won the equivalent races in two countries. Ten days after his defeat at Newmarket the colt was sent to Italy to contest the Premio Parioli over 1600 metres at Capannelle Racecourse in Rome. After recovering from a slow start, he launched a sustained challenge on the outside, took the lead in the final stride and won by a nose from Risiat.
In late April 1945, Pavot was being made ready to run in the Kentucky Derby, delayed that year by a month due to government imposed wartime restrictions. However, he stepped on a pin which interrupted his race conditioning and as a result only made his first start as a three-year-old on June 6, 1945. After more than an eight-month absence from racing, the colt suffered the first loss of his career when he finished second by a nose to Polynesian in the Withers Mile at Belmont Park. Not entered in the mile and a quarter Kentucky Derby, on June 16 Pavot was sent to Baltimore's Pimlico Race Course to prepare for the 55th running of the Preakness Stakes.
After racing towards the rear of the field, Lightning Spear produced a strong late run in the straight and caught Zonderland on the line to win by a nose. Murphy commented: "I made no secret about how tactical the race was going to be. It was impossible to know what was going to happen, but you have to have confidence you have chosen to do the right thing and thankfully I just about got it right... It was a good performance today". On his two remaining starts in Europe that year, Lightning Spear ran sixth to Ribchester in the Prix du Moulin at Chantilly Racecourse in September and sixth again behind the filly Persuasive in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in October.
Shamus Award made his racing debut at Moonee Valley Racecourse on the same day as the 2012 Cox Plate running 3rd in a two year old's race. He placed 3rd in his next two races before entering his first Group One race, the 2013 Blue Diamond Stakes where as a 100/1 shot he ran an eye catching 5th. During the 2013 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival Shamus Award ran 2nd first up before putting in a poor seventh. In the Group 2 Bill Sutt Stakes he was beaten by a nose and had a protest overturned before running 3rd in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas putting in a huge late run to make up ground on the eventual winner Long John after early troubles.
In particular the winner of the second running in 1980 was the 1979 US Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Davona Dale, the 1983 winner Ambassador of Luck who went onto become the US Champion Older Dirt Female Horse and Lady's Secret, the 1985 winner as a three-year- old, who in the following year would win the Breeders' Cup Distaff. The only dual winner of the event, Shine Again failed by a nose to win a third time as a six-year-old when she was beaten by the 13-1 outsider Harmony Lodge in 2003. The event continues to be a part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series with the winner of the Ballerina Stakes automatically qualifying for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.
The R.E.5 was designed as a reconnaissance biplane using the experience of earlier R.E. series aircraft. It was a two-bay equal-span biplane with a fixed tailskid landing gear, with the wheels supported on skids and powered by a nose-mounted 120 hp (89 kW) Austro-Daimler engine driving a four-bladed propeller. The aircraft had two open cockpits with the observer/gunner in the forward cockpit under the upper wing and the pilot aft. The larger more capable Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.7 was a further development of the design. Some modified single-seat high altitude aircraft were built with extended-span (57 ft 2⅓ in or 17.43 m) upper wings supported by a pair of outward-leaning struts.
On her first appearance as a four- year-old started favourite for the Prix Allez France at Chantilly in April but after leading for most of the way she was overtaken 100 metres out and finished third behind Aquamarine and Haya Landa. In the Prix Corrida over 2100 metres at Saint-Cloud on 28 May, Lemaire adopted different tactics, settling the filly in fourth place before making a challenge in the straight. Shareta struggled to obtain a clear run before finishing strongly but failed by a nose to catch Solemia to whom she was conceding two pounds in weight. In the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud on 24 June Shareta faced Danedream, Galikova and the 2011 Grand Prix de Paris winner Meandre in a four-runners field.
On 10 June, Dunette started a 50/1 outsider for the 130th running of the Prix de Diane (sponsored by Revlon) over 2000 metres at Chantilly. Three Troikas, coupled in the betting with her pacemaker Sealy, started at odds of 1/10 ahead of Producer (winner of the Prix de Royaumont), Nonoalca (runner-up in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches), Cheerfully, Pitasia and Salpinx. In contrast to her previous run, Dunette was successfully restrained by Doleuze and turned into the straight in seventh or eighth place. Three Troikas went to the front from Nonoalca and Producer but Dunette produced a sustained run on the outside to catch the previously unbeaten favourite 50 metres from the finish and won by a nose.
In 1980, Mary Lou Tuck became the first woman trainer to win the Hollywood Gold Cup with Go West Young Man. In 1999, the Blood-Horse magazine List of the Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century was published, and fourteen horses on the list had won the Hollywood Gold Cup: Citation, Affirmed, Round Table, Cigar, Swaps, Seabiscuit, Skip Away, Gallant Man, Challedon, Ack Ack, Native Diver, Noor, Two Lea and Exceller. In the 73rd running of the Hollywood Gold Cup in 2012, Chantal Sutherland, aboard Game On Dude, became the first female jockey to win the race. Game On Dude had also been Sutherland's mount in the previous year's running, finishing second by a nose to First Dude.
After a break of two months, Fairyland returned for the Lowther Stakes at York Racecourse and started 6/4 favourite ahead of the Princess Margaret Stakes winner Angel's Hideaway. Ridden by Moore she led for most of the way and after being headed by The Mackem Bullet inside the furlong she rallied in the final strides to regain the advantage and win by a nose. After the race O'Brien said "I'm delighted with her. She did get headed so it was great to see her battle back... She's a lovely filly and [the Cheveley Park Stakes] is the way we'll be heading... she's a big, rangy filly – she looks more like a three-year-old than a two-year-old".
He was made joint-favourite with the Sheema Classic winner Eastern Anthem just ahead of the Hardwicke Stakes winner Bronze Cannon with the best of the others appearing to be Toughness Danon (Furstenberg- Rennen), Enroller (John Porter Stakes) and Eliot (fourth in the German Derby). The colt started quickly before settling in second place behind Enroller and then went to the front 400 metres from the finish. Eastern Anthem produced a sustained effort but Jukebox Jury prevailed by a nose with a gap of two and a half lengths back to Eliot in third place. For his final run of the season, as Johnston had predicted, Jukebox Jury was sent to Canada for the Pattison Canadian International at Woodbine Racetrack on 17 October.
The first units were used successfully during the Battle of Peleliu in 1944. The 20 cm naval rocket was a modification of a standard naval projectile by screwing a rocket booster to the projectile. The rocket was ignited by a percussion cap which screwed into the base of the projectile and the rocket consisted of 7 sticks of double base solid-propellant whose exhaust gasses were forced through six venturis drilled in the base of the rocket at a 25° angle which rotated the projectile in a clockwise direction imparting spin-stabilization. Type 91 trinitroanisole explosive was poured into a lacquered shell body intended to stop the formation of picrate salts and the projectile was centrifugally armed by a nose fuze.
As a four-year-old, Golden Missile started his campaign at Hialeah in March 1999 and won the grade three Widener Handicap at nine furlongs over Early Warning, Sir Bear. He then took some time off and was freshened until summer. On the New Jersey beach, Golden Missile won his first start back at Monmouth Park Racetrack and won the $80,000 Skip Away Stakes by 7½ lengths. In August he shipped up to Saratoga and placed third in the $300,000 grade two Saratoga Breeders' Cup Handicap behind Running Stag and Catienus. Then in September he had a good solid performance in the $500,000 grade three Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap, being nipped at wire by British invader Supreme Sound by a nose.
In 1993, Vuelve Candy B. won another 19 races (13 of them consecutively) and setting a record for the most stakes won in Puerto Rican Horse Racing. He battled Imbuia Pajoqui, a Puerto Rican filly, in many of these stakes races creating sensation among the Puerto Rican horse racing fans. As a six-year-old, Vuelve Candy B. won the Clasico Eugenio María de Hostos by defeating 1993 Clasico del Caribe winner, Verset's Jet. This was Vuelve Candy B. only win against Verset's Jet who won his next 6 races against Vuelve Candy B. In May 1994, Vuelve Candy B. won his 16th and last stakes race by winning his third Clasico Dia de las Madres, beating Imbuia Pajoqui by a nose.
As the two passed the mile pole, Gallant Man's rider, future Hall of Fame jockey Bill Shoemaker, stood up in his irons long enough for Gallant Man to briefly lose his stride. Iron Liege would go on to hold off Gallant Man and win by a nose in a driving finish, with Round Table third and Bold Ruler fourth. After first blaming his actions on a bad step by Gallant Man, Shoemaker later admitted that he misjudged the mile pole as the finish line, and he was suspended 15 days by the Churchill Downs stewards for "gross carelessness". Shoemaker's gaffe has been noted in books, in articles, and on online sites, as one of the biggest blunders in racing history.
Elvstroem was trained by Tony Vasil at Caulfield. He raced 32 times, winning 10 races and placing on 9 other occasions. His most notable victory came way in the 2004 Caulfield Cup where he beat the champion racemare Makybe Diva by a nose. Although he didn't win, his 4th in the Melbourne Cup on a track rated heavy is considered one of his best, due to him not being considered a chance of running. His other major wins came way in the Group 1 VRC Derby of 2003, Group 1 MRC Underwood Stakes, Group 1 MRC C F Orr Stakes in 2005 and Group 1 Dubai Duty Free Stakes at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in Dubai, held in 2005.theage.com.
He recorded his tenth consecutive win as he took the lead a furlong out and won easily by one and three quarter lengths from Cleonte. His success made him the seventh horse after Isonomy, Alycidon, Souepi, Le Moss, Longboat and Double Trigger to win the Stayers' Triple Crown. On 19 October Stradivarius attempted to win his eleventh consecutive race as he ran for the third time in the British Champions Long Distance Cup and went off the 8/13 favourite. The closing stages saw Stradivarius and the four-year-old Kew Gardens draw away from the field and although the favourite gained a narrow lead a furlong out, his younger rival rallied in the final strides to win by a nose.
Street Sense went into the second jewel of the Triple Crown as the favorite, but finished second by a nose to eventual two-time Horse of the year Curlin in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on May 19, 2007. The 9-horse field included Derby runner- up Hard Spun, Curlin, sixth-place finisher Circular Quay, Mint Slewlep, Xchanger, King of the Roxy, Flying First Class, and C P West. Street Sense in the paddock prior to the 2007 Breeders' Cup Owner James Tafel decided not to run Street Sense in the Belmont Stakes, looking to regroup for major races later in the year. On August 25, 2007, ridden by Calvin Borel, Street Sense won the Grade I $1-million Travers Stakes, at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York.
British trainer Michael Stoute landed both the 1996 and 1997 Japan Cups with the supremely tough and talented international campaigners Singspiel - by a nose - and Pilsudski - by a neck - respectively. Singspiel, owned and bred by Sheikh Mohammed, won a total of five Group/Grade One events during his career, including the 1996 Canadian International Stakes and the 1997 Dubai World Cup. Pilsudski's victory in 1997 came on his final appearance and was his sixth Group/Grade One victory, with others coming in the Grosser Preis von Baden in Germany, the Breeders' Cup Turf and Irish Champion Stakes. Pilsudski took up stallion duties in Japan but moved to Ireland in 2004. The Japanese then struck back with victories for El Condor Pasa (1998), Special Week (1999) and T M Opera O (2000).
For the next National Hunt season Apple's Jade was transferred to the stable of Gordon Elliott in County Meath after Gigginstown's owner Michael O'Leary had a disagreement with Mullins over training fees. On her first run for her new trainer, the mare started 1/2 favourite for the WKD Hurdle at Down Royal Racecourse on 4 November but after leading for most of the way she was overtaken in the closing stages and beaten into second place by Rashaan. Later that month she was sent to England for the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle Racecourse. She lost her position after being hampered by the fall of Petit Mouchoir at the third last and despite rallying strongly she failed by a nose to overhaul the eight-year-old gelding Irving.
Racing at age two, he won all five of his starts and at age three broke the King's Plate race record by a second in winning Canada's most prestigious race. In an era when horses often raced once a week or even more often, just four days after Horometer won the King's Plate, he claimed victory in the Breeders' Stakes. Three days after that, he was sent to the track again and suffered the only loss of his career when he finished second by a nose in the William Hendrie Memorial Handicap. In his final race in June 1934, Horometer won the Canadian Breeders' Handicap at the now-defunct Long Branch Racetrack in Toronto but came out of the race with an injury and, after apparently recovering, went lame following a training workout.
In the final quarter mile, Tom Queally sent the 66/1 outsider Jacqueline Quest into the lead on the stands side from Sent From Heaven and the Irish filly Gile Na Greine as Pasquier made rapid progress on the favourite. In the closing stages Special Duty moved up to challenge Jacqueline Quest but was carried out into the centre of the course as the outsider hung badly to the right. The photo-finish showed that Jacqueline Quest had won by a nose from Special Duty, with Gile Na Greine a head away in third but the racecourse stewards immediately called an inquiry. After ten minutes of deliberation they took the view that the interference caused by the "winner" had affected the result of the race and awarded the victory to Special Duty.

Dance Hero finished last. In the Group 2 Villiers Stakes over 1,400 metres, Takeover Target held off the challenge of the former North American-trained Group 1 winner Honor In War to win by a nose with Alverta 2½ lengths back in third place, but he lost the race on protest to Honor In War due to interference 200 metres from the finish. Following a spell, Takeover Target returned to racing on 26 April 2008 in the Group 1 T J Smith Stakes over 1,200 metres at Randwick, finishing third behind multiple Group 1 winner Apache Cat. He then travelled to Singapore, where he won the Singapore Turf Club’s KrisFlyer International Sprint (G1) over 1200 metres at Kranji Racecourse on 18 May 2008 in new track record time of 1:08.80.
Hopsorrhinus aureus at Museum Wiesbaden Rhinogrades are mammals characterized by a nose-like feature called a "nasorium", the form and function of which vary significantly between species. According to Stümpke, the order's remarkable variety was the natural outcome of evolution acting over millions of years in the remote Hy-yi-yi islands. All the 14 families and 189 known snouter species descended from a small shrew-like animal, which gradually evolved and diversified to fill most of the ecological niches in the archipelago -- from tiny worm-like beings to large herbivores and predators. Many rhinogrades used their nose for locomotion, for example the "snout leapers" like Hopsorrhinus aureus, whose nasorium was used for jumping, or the "earwings" like Otopteryx, which flew backwards by flapping its ears and used its nose as a rudder.
Strong Suit made his racecourse debut in a maiden race over six furlongs at Newbury Racecourse on 14 May and started the 6/4 favourite in a twelve-runner field. He recovered from being hampered when the front-running Straight Line veered to the left, took the lead a furlong out and won "going away" by one and three quarter lengths from Neebras. A month later the colt was stepped up sharply in class to contest the Group 2 Coventry Stakes over six furlongs at Royal Ascot and started the 15/8 favourite in a thirteen- runner field. After being repeatedly denied a clear run in the last quarter mile he produced a strong late run, caught the leader Elzaam in the last stride and won by a nose.
In the International Stakes over ten and a half furlongs at York Racecourse three weeks later, Circus Maximus set the pace before fading in the last quarter mile and coming home seventh behind his stablemate Japan. On 9 September the colt was sent to France and went off at odds of 4.1/1 for the Prix du Moulin over 1600 metres at Longchamp Racecourse. Romanised headed the betting after winning the Prix Jacques Le Marois while the other eight runners included Olmedo (Poule d'Essai des Poulains), Line of Duty (Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf) and Phoenix of Spain. After racing in third place Circus Maximus moved up to dispute the lead 200 metres from the finish and got the better of a closely contested struggle with Romanised to win by a nose.
Rainbow Line's trainer Hidekazu Asami Two weeks after his last start of 2015, Rainbow Line began his second campaign in the Shinzan Kinen at Kyoto and finished sixth of the eighteen runners behind Logi Cry. On 27 February at Hanshin the colt contested the Grade 3 Arlington Cup over 1600 metres on firm ground and started the 5.8/1 fourth choice in the betting behind Urban Kid, Ball Lightning (Keio Hai Nisai Stakes) and Hiruno Magellan. Ridden by Mirco Demuro he raced towards the rear of the field before moving up on the wide outside on the final turn and staying on strongly in the straight. In a "blanket finish" which saw the first five finishers separated by less than a half a length he prevailed by a nose from Dantsu Prius.
At Nakayama on 9 September the filly started favourite for the Grade 3 Shion Stakes, a race which serves as a trial race for the Shuka Sho. Ridden as in most of her previous starts by Yasunari Iwata she came from eleventh place on the final turn to win by a nose from Caribbean Gold with Port Vendres a further nose away in third place. Christophe Lemaire took the ride when Deirdre contested the Grade 1 Shuka Sho over 2000 metres at Kyoto on 15 October and was made the 5.3/1 third choice in the betting behind Aerolithe (NHK Mile Cup) and Fan Dii Na (Flower Cup). The other fifteen runners included Lys Gracieux (second in the Oka Sho), Mozu Katchan, Rabbit Run (Rose Stakes), Reine Minoru and Caribbean Gold.
He then won his second straight race in the Grade 3, $350,000 Alysheba Stakes at one and one sixteenth miles on the dirt at Churchill Downs by a nose on the May 6, 2011, on the Kentucky Oaks undercard. The field for the Alysheba was exceptionally deep, including grade 1 winners Giant Oak and Awesome Gem, multiple grade II winner Mission Impazible (the 5-2 morning line favorite), and grade II winners Caracortado and Regal Ransom. On July 9, 2011, First Dude won his first Grade 1 race in the Hollywood Gold Cup at Hollywood Park. He was taken off the pace by jockey Martin Garcia and, with a quarter mile left to run, charged from fifth place to a nose victory over stablemate Game On Dude and odds-on favorite Twirling Candy.
Vodka’s successive wins in the Yasuda Kinen triplicated what had only been achieved twice before, by Sweet Sue in 1952 and 1953 and by Yamanin Zephyr in 1992 and 1993. In the 2009 running, another photo finish decided the winner, in which the five-year-old mare Vodka on her third Japan Cup try with the French jockey Christophe Lemaire won by a nose over the 2008 Kikuka Sho winner Oken Bruce Lee, in a time of 2 minutes and 22.4 seconds, the third-fastest Japan Cup ever run at the standard 2,400-meter distance. Vodka's win would make her the second highest earning racehorse in Japan. Vodka placed 4th in the 2007 running to Admire Moon and 3rd in the 2008 running to Screen Hero, in which the latter ran 13th in the 2009 race.
Lady Eli was beaten by just of a length by the winner, who set a stakes record. On October 8, Lady Eli returned to the winner's circle in the Flower Bowl Stakes at Belmont Park by lengths at odds of 4–5. Referring to her win following recovery from laminitis, Brown said, "It couldn't happen to a more deserving horse, for her to overcome all this." Queen's Trust beats Lady Eli by a nose in the Filly & Mare Turf Lady Eli was the betting favorite in the 2016 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita on November 5 but faced a strong field including Grade I winners Seventh Heaven (Irish Oaks, Yorkshire Oaks), Catch a Glimpse (Belmont Oaks), Sea Calisi (Beverly D), Avenge (Rodeo Drive), Al's Gal (EP Taylor), Ryan's Charm (Clasico Pamplona) and Kitcat (Club Hipico Falabella).
Horlick's world record from 1989 was also broken, with an incredible time of 2m 22.1s. Deep Impact won the 2006 running in the penultimate race of his career, helping the Sunday Silence colt to his second consecutive Horse of the Year award in Japan. In the 2009 edition, another photo finish decided the winner, in which the five-year-old mare Vodka on her third Japan Cup try with the French jockey Christophe Lemaire won by a nose over the 2008 Kikuka Sho winner Oken Bruce Lee, at a time of 2 minutes and 22.4 seconds, the third-fastest Japan Cup ever run at the standard 2400-meter distance. Vodka's win would make her the 2nd-richest racehorse in Japan and the world; the two-time Breeders' Cup Turf winner Conduit would finish 4th on his final race of his career.
Despite doubts about his ability to cope with the soft turf he was made 7/10 favourite against sixteen opponents, with Yoshitomi Shibata taking over from the suspended Fukunaga. He looked likely to be beaten in the straight as the 147/1 outsider Grand Prix Boss established a clear lead, but produced a strong finish to take the lead in the last stride and win by a nose. In autumn, Just A Way was one of three Japanese horses, the others being Gold Ship and Harp Star, sent to Europe to contest the 93rd running of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp Racecourse. Racing over a distance of 2400 metres for the first time for more than two and a half years, he started the 8/1 fifth choice in the betting behind Taghrooda, Avenir Certain, Ectot and Harp Star.
Bred and owned by Ogden Phipps, Easy Goer was a son of Alydar out of the 1981 American Champion Older Female Horse Relaxing (by Buckpasser). Trained by Shug McGaughey and ridden by Pat Day, the uncommonly muscular, big, powerful, long-striding chestnut colt with a white star won 14 of his 20 races, including nine Grade I wins at distances of seven furlongs, eight furlongs, nine furlongs, ten furlongs and twelve furlongs, and placed second five times. Easy Goer's racing career was also marked by his closely matched rivalry with Sunday Silence, who held a three to one edge in their head to head races. Easy Goer defeated Sunday Silence by eight lengths in the Belmont and finished second to him in the Kentucky Derby by two and a half lengths, Preakness by a nose and Breeders' Cup Classic by a neck.
Easy Goer, after breaking in the air at the start, made a big, early move down the backstretch which catapulted him to a two-length lead over Sunday Silence with a half mile remaining, with the six-furlong split being run in a rapid 1:09 3/5. Sunday Silence then challenged around the far turn, with both horses running the fastest mile split in Preakness history in 1:34 1/5. Following a nose-to-nose duel for the last quarter mile with Easy Goer running in very tight quarters near the rail, Sunday Silence won by a nose in a fast final time of 1:53 4/5. Jockey Pat Day was criticized for reining Easy Goer's head sideways to the right in deep stretch with a short lead right before the finish line.
She was still only fifth a furlong out but continued her run to take the lead in the final strides and won by a head from African Dancer with Roses for the star in third. Although the filly had run well on good and firm ground Prendergast had insisted that the Sarah Siddons would be better suited by a soft surface, which she encountered for the first time in the Prix Vermeille at Longchamp Racecourse on 19 September. With Lester Piggott taking over the ride from Roche, she started a 24/1 outsider in a field which included Pawneese, Riverqueen, Lagunette and Theia. She produced a strong late run to take the lead from Lagunette inside the last 200 metres and looked the likely winner, but Lagunette rallied to defeat the Irish filly by a nose.
It is one of the premier sporting activities in the city having the highest cash prize for any single sporting event in India. The race was first held in 1943 and was won by a filly Princess Beautiful, ridden by Edgar Britt. There have been many exciting finishes to the Indian Derby but none have come close to the one that occurred on 8 February 1947, a filly named "Her Majesty" ridden by Australian jockey W.T Evans son of 1907 Melbourne Cup winning jockey William (Billy) Evans, had a dramatic fall after the start of the race but both the rider and the horse were brave enough to get back on their feet and run the race only to finish second to Bucephalus by a "nose". Two weeks later Her Majesty beat Bucephalus in the classic Indian St. Leger by twenty lengths.
After a break of almost three months, Grass Wonder returned for the Grade II Mainichi Okan over 1800 metres at Tokyo on 10 October and won from Meisho Odo and Embrasser Moi. On 26 December at Nakayama, Grass Wonder attempted to become the fourth horse following Speed Symboli, Symboli Rudolf and Oguri Cap to win back-to-back runnings of the Arima Kinen. His main opponents in the fourteen runner field included Mejiro Bright, Narita Top Road (Kikuka Sho), Phalaenopsis, Special Week, Stay Gold, Symboli Indy (NHK Mile Cup) and T M Opera O (Satsuki Sho). The race produced a dramatic finish with the lead changing hand several times in the last 200 metres, but Grass Wonder prevailed by a nose and a neck from Special Week and T M Opera O with Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi half a length away in fourth.
In 1930, Olaf Stapledon published a "future history", Last and First Men: A Story of the Near and Far Future, describing the history of humanity from the present onwards, across two billion years and eighteen human species, of which Homo sapiens is the first. The book anticipates the science of genetic engineering, and is an early instance of the fictional group mind idea. Published in 1957, German zoologist Gerolf Steiner's book Bau und Leben der Rhinogradentia (translated into English as The Snouters: The Form and Life of the Rhinogrades) described the fictional evolution, biology and behavior of an imaginary order of mammals, the Rhinogradentia or "rhinogrades". The Rhinogrades are characterized by a nose-like feature called a "nasorium", the form and function of which vary significantly between species, akin to Darwin's finches and their beak specialization.
This win combined with his victory in Woodbine's G2 Sky Classic Stakes, contributed to his being voted Canada's Sovereign Award for Champion Male Turf Horse. In 2009, following a year-long layoff as a result of a serious tendon injury, the nine-year-old gelding came back to another highly successful campaign for trainer Jonathan Sheppard. Under Champion jockey Rosemary Homeister, Jr., Cloudy's Knight raised his career earnings to more than $2.4 million with wins in the Kentucky Cup Turf Stakes and Sycamore Stakes at tracks in Kentucky, a second by a nose in the mile and three-quarter Breeders' Cup Marathon at Santa Anita Park , and on December 6, he won in the mile and three-quarter Valedictory Stakes at Woodbine. . In his final race in the year 2009, the 9-year-old took the W. L. McKnight Handicap from Presious Passion, who had won the race in 2007 & 2008\.
Blind Luck made her 3-year-old debut a winning one in the Grade I Las Virgenes Stakes where she rallied to win by a nose over Evening Jewel. In the Grade I, $250,000 Santa Anita Oaks, Blind Luck closed well but found herself trapped on the inside until the final sixteenth of a mile. She rallied late but fell short by 3/4 lengths, coming in third behind Crisp and All Due Respect. In the Grade II Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park on April 3, she won as a come-from-behind favorite, taking the race by 2½ lengths. The 136th running of the Grade I Kentucky Oaks took place on April 30, 2010, on Churchill Downs' traditional dirt course. Blind Luck was listed as a 6-5 morning-line favorite in a field of 14 and broke from post 5 with regular jockey Rafael Bejarano aboard.
In 1941, Whirlaway became the only horse ever to win the both the American Triple Crown and the Travers Stakes, sometimes referred to as a " superfecta". In 1962, arguably the greatest Travers in history took place. Jaipur won by a nose-bob in track record time over the arguably more talented Ridan after a long, head-to-head battle over the entire mile and a quarter. Still written and talked about today, the race is listed in the 2006 book Horse Racing's Top 100 Moments written by the staff of Blood-Horse Publications. The race result determined which colt would be named the 1962 U.S. Champion 3-Year-Old Horse. In 1982, Runaway Groom, the Champion Canadian Three year old arrived at Saratoga after competing in the Canadian Triple Crown, having won the Prince of Wales Stakes and Breeders' Stakes, and finishing second in the Queen's Plate.
On August 19, 2007, he finished second in the 1-1/4-mile Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar. In the race, Awesome Gem made a furious closing effort down the stretch from almost last to narrowly miss overtaking the leader, Student Council, at the wire. On September 29, Awesome Gem unsuccessfully dueled Tiago down the stretch in the 1-1/8-mile Grade I Goodwood Handicap on Santa Anita's new Cushion Track during the 2007 Oak Tree meet, losing by a nose and again placing second. Awesome Gem ran as a long shot in the prestigious Grade I 1-1/4-mile Breeders' Cup Classic at Monmouth Park on October 27, 2007. On the sloppy track, he rallied and overtook 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense to earn third place. The $500,000 third- place prize effectively doubled the gelding's career earnings and made him West Point Thoroughbred's first horse to reach $1 million in earnings.
Vega won the 1988 Ashley T. Cole Handicap aboard Tinchens Prince by a nose in dramatic fashion for owner Albert Fried, and The Grade 3 Martha Washington aboard timely Business. Vega also won an allowance race during the strike on a filly named Timely Business, and was asked by trainer John O. Hertler to ride the filly back, because he'd never seen the horse respond to a rider the way she did when Vega rode her. On November 12, 1988, Vega decided to take off all of his other mounts that he was scheduled to ride that day, and flew to Laurel Park in Maryland with trainer John O. Hertler to ride just one race aboard Timely Business. Timely Business was an unaccomplished filly who had just came back off a layoff due to a fracture, and was entered in the 1988 Martha Washington Handicap at Laurel Park after her impressive allowance victory at Aqueduct two weeks prior.
Dream And Do was made the 7.8/1 fourth choice in the betting behind Tropbeau, Simeen (undefeated in three races) and Tickle Me Green. After being settled just behind the leaders and overcoming some interference as she attempted to obtain a clear run, Dream And Do overtook the front-running Marieta 100 metres from the finish and held off a strong late challenge from Speak of the Devil to win by a nose.
