Mill Reef made his debut in May in the Salisbury Stakes at Salisbury, where he beat the previous winner and 2-9 favourite, the Lester Piggott-ridden Fireside Chat, by four lengths. He then went to Royal Ascot winning the Coventry Stakes by six lengths, and the decision was made to go to France for the Prix Robert Papin at Maisons-Laffitte. After an arduous journey, Mill Reef tasted defeat for the first time by the narrowest of margins to another exceptional English two-year-old, My Swallow. Back on home soil, he was entered in the Gimcrack Stakes at York in mid August.
AB 1634 was a 2007 bill (authored by Democrat Lloyd Levine) in the California State Legislature which would require that dogs and cats in California be spayed or neutered by 6 months of age. The bill would have provided limited availability for purchased "intact permits" and a small number of exemptions. The bill passed the California Assembly by the narrowest of margins on June 6, 2007, but was deferred by Assemblyman Levine on July 11, 2007 when it became apparent that it would not pass in the California Senate Local Government committee where it had been assigned. Levine has stated his intention to reintroduce the bill in 2008.
However, after that he was affected by injury but he still took eleven wickets in his two Tests and was chosen for the first Test- playing tour of India that winter. Clark's 1934 season was again plagued by injury, but he was still regarded so highly that he played in two Tests against Australia. At Old Trafford he bowled well on one of the most docile of pitches but had no luck, but in the last Test at the Oval he took five for 98 including the valuable scalps of Brown, Ponsford, McCabe and Kippax. He also failed twice by the narrowest of margins to bowl Don Bradman.
The 1923 First Grade Championship was arguably the most keenly fought in the competitions history to this point with three teams in the hunt for the title up until the last two weeks. Marist Old Boys who were in a good position to win the title lost in the 12th and 13th rounds and bowed out of contention, leaving City Rovers and Athletics to contend. It was ultimately won by City Rovers who finished the season with a 10 win and 2 loss record, as did Athletic, with a final being required to determine the winner. City won by the narrowest of margins 8–7 to go back to back.
Over the years the Sharks have developed a number of major rivalries, particularly since the 1990s and their emergence as a dominant force in the Currie Cup. Perhaps their most long-standing rivalry is that of their old foes Northern Transvaal/Blue Bulls. The Sharks first ever Currie Cup final victory came against Northern Transvaal in Pretoria in 1990 and since then the two teams have played out a number of classic encounters including the 2007 Super Rugby Final in Durban where the Bulls were victorious by the narrowest of margins in front of a packed Kings Park Stadium. The Sharks also have a fierce rivalry against Transvaal/Golden Lions.
Conceding 20 pounds in weight to the promising colt Perfect Knight she produced an exceptionally game performance to win by the narrowest of margins. At York Racecourse in August the filly started at odds of 7/4 and won the Yorkshire Oaks, coming from last place to win by three lengths under a weight of 135 pounds. After the race she was praised for her "indomitable courage" and was reported to be "the popular idol of the English Turf". She was then stepped up in distance for the Park Hill Stakes over fourteen and a half furlong at Doncaster Racecourse in September and won "as she liked" from four opponents at odds of 1/5.
At the start of the 1940s the club continued to feature in a number of county finals, and it could be argued reached a new peak in terms of the quality of teams on the field. In 1941 the club contested both the senior and minor county finals, but failed to capture either title. The senior final was lost by the narrowest of margins to Gweedore (Played in Dungloe); who at this time were a prominent force in Donegal Football contesting seven senior finals in the 1940s, losing only once. The chance to contest another senior county final arose the following year (played in Ardara), but again luck was not on Glenties' side as Ballyshannon took the cup home.
Amongst top-tier local authorities, East and West Sussex County Councils are both held by the Conservatives and Brighton and Hove City Council is led by a minority Green administration. Amongst district councils, as of September 2020 the Conservative Party controls 6 local authorities (Adur, Chichester, Horsham, Mid Sussex, Wealden and Worthing), the Lib Dems control 3 (Arun, Eastbourne and Lewes) and the Labour Party controls 2 (Crawley and Hastings). Conservative Katy Bourne is the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, having first been elected in 2012. In the 2016 referendum on UK membership of the EU, the people of Sussex voted to leave the EU by the narrowest of margins, by 50.23% to 49.77% or 4,413 votes.
Smith was born in Draycott, Derbyshire, and started his professional career at Derby County, before joining Sheffield United in March 1948. His most prolific season for the "Blades" was 1949–50, when he scored 16 goals from 29 league appearances, which helped United to finish third in the Second Division, missing out on promotion to arch-rivals Sheffield Wednesday by the narrowest of margins, 0.008 on goal average. After five seasons with Sheffield United, he joined Manchester City in May 1952, moving on to Grimsby Town in September. At Grimsby, playing in the Third Division North, he scored 24 goals from 50 League appearances in two years, before spending one season with Bradford City.
The 2000–01 season saw Stirling Albion go on a run of 17 games without a win, and finished at the bottom of the Second Division and were subsequently relegated to the Third Division. The following season was equally poor as The Binos finished second bottom of the Third Division, avoiding the bottom place by the narrowest of margins – a single missed penalty. Their Scottish Cup campaign was similarly weak, with the team being knocked out by East of Scotland League team Gala Fairydean. Ray Stewart was sacked at the end of the season. Allan Moore was appointed manager at the beginning of the 2002–03 season, and the club saw immediate improvement in its fortunes.
The only previous time Glenealy had managed a 3 in a row was when they won their first ever titles in the late 1950s. In 2013 at Aughrim GAA grounds Glenealy senior hurlers completed the club's first ever '4 in a row' of Wicklow SHC titles by defeating Bray Emmets 0-17 to 0-14. On 5/10/2014 at Aughrim GAA grounds Glenealy senior hurlers were denied their first ever '5 in a row' when they lost by the narrowest of margins to last year's beaten finalists Bray Emmets. Despite a cracking start to the second half when Glenealy stormed ahead the final score was 2-09 (15) to 1-11 (14).
The club made an inauspicious start and did not achieve any notable successes during the 1930s, in fact the club ceased to function when it was disbanded for the duration of World War Two. On the cessation of hostilities, Kells Centre Amateur Rugby League Club was reformed and immediately achieved success. On 3 February 1946, Kells were drawn against the mighty ‘Wire’ of Warrington in a Rugby League Challenge Cup 1st round tie. The early rounds in those days were two-legged affairs and in the first match played at the Recreation Ground, Kells lost by the narrowest of margins, 3–0. In the return game at Wilderspool they lost the game 27–0.
Pakenham, supra, p. 580 De Wet came to be regarded as the most formidable leader of the Boers in their guerrilla warfare. Sometimes severely handled by the British, sometimes escaping only by the narrowest of margins from the columns which attempted to surround him, and falling upon and annihilating isolated British posts, De Wet continued his successful career to the end of the war, striking heavily where he could, and evading every attempt to bring him to bay. His brother, Piet Daniel De Wet, another successful Boer general, was captured by the British in July 1901 and subsequently served against Christiaan as a member of the National Scouts, who were Boers serving with the British forces.
From 2001 to 2011, Thornton competed as a member of Canada's National Rowing Team. One of her chief accomplishments during this time was an undefeated international season in the Women's Pair with partner Darcy Marquardt that culminated in victory at the 2006 World Rowing Championships at Eton-Dorney, UK. The duo qualified the Women's Pair for the Beijing 2008 Olympics the following year at the 2007 World Rowing Championships. In the spring of 2008, Thornton was assigned to stroke the Women's Eight at the final Olympic qualification regatta where the crew secured a berth for the Games. That crew went on to come fourth in Beijing by the narrowest of margins (just 0.72 seconds separated 2nd place from 4th).
The Final saw them take on the Stars and lose out by the narrowest of margins, 8–7, over the two legs, and for the third time in the season Blaze were runners-up. Season 2002–03 saw another evolution not revolution in the playing staff with Jody Lehman replacing Burt in goal, Joel Poirier replacing the departed Roberts, and GB forward Ashley Tait joining the team. Blaze entered the Ice Hockey Superleague (ISL) Challenge Cup at the start of the season, and ran a couple of ISL teams close. The Findus Challenge Cup saw Blaze into the Finals where they met the Newcastle Vipers, but the result was a 0–3 loss.
Kamata made her international debut with Kondo at the 2006 ISAF RS:X Worlds in Rizhao, China, picking up a runner-up spot on the women's side after their close duel with the Dutch crew of Marcelien de Koning and Lobke Berkhout for the gold. Later in that year, the Japanese duo capped a successful campaign with their country's only sailing gold in the women's 470 at the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Kamata qualified for the Japanese sailing squad, as a crew member in the women's 470 class. Despite missing out the podium by the narrowest of margins, she and skipper Kondo managed to secure one of the twelve places offered at the 2007 ISAF Worlds in Cascais, Portugal.
The Republicans did not run a candidate that year and concentrated on carrying Virginia in the presidential election, which they did by the narrowest of margins, for Gerald R. Ford Jr. Byrd's committee assignments in the senate included the Finance Committee and Armed Services Committee. Even as a senator, Byrd contributed regular editorial content to his newspapers, blending journalism and politics. In a 1982 interview with The Washington Post, Byrd maintained that his earlier resistance to school desegregation, including the closure of schools, was justified and helped prevent racial violence. Byrd did not run for reelection in 1982 and returned full-time to his home in Winchester; he and his father had held the "Byrd seat" in the Senate for fifty consecutive years.
Attacking Tone, the leading heavy cruiser to the east of the formation, Johnston closed to , now firing with reduced efficiency due to her lost SC radar, yet still registering many hits. All available fighters and bombers from the Taffys converged on the Japanese fleet. At 08:40, moving erratically through the smoke and rain, Johnston avoided Heermann by the narrowest of margins. During the battle, Evans engaged in several duels with much larger Japanese opponents. At 08:20, emerging through smoke and rain squalls, Johnston was confronted by a 36,600-ton Kongō-class battleship (probably Haruna, which reported engaging a US destroyer with her secondary battery around this time.) Johnston fired at least 40 rounds, and more than 15 hits on the battleship's superstructure were observed.
After two seasons spent in the division Waterloo would pip Halifax to the title by the narrowest of margins finishing dead level on points but going up to the 2004–05 National Division Two by virtue of a massively better for and against record. Halifax would suffer a double disappointment by missing out on their second stab at promotion as they lost narrowly at home to 2003–04 National Division Three South runners up Launceston in the promotion playoff. Relegated teams included newly promoted Longton (who gained only 4 points all season), Liverpool St Helens and Preston Grasshoppers. Longton would drop back down to Midlands Division 1 while Liverpool St Helens and Preston Grasshoppers would fall to North Division 1.
The defeat gave Ireland the Grand Slam, and left Wales fourth on points difference despite their three wins. At the 2011 World Cup, Wales defeated Fiji, Namibia and Samoa, only narrowly losing to South Africa at the pool stages. In the quarter-finals, they faced Ireland, beating them 22–10, hence reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 1987. It was at the semi-final stage that Wales came up short by the narrowest of margins, losing 9–8 to France after a red card for captain Sam Warburton in the 18th minute. On 17 March 2012, Wales completed their third Six Nations Grand Slam in eight years, with a 16–9 victory over France at the Millennium Stadium in the 2012 Six Nations Championship.
Subiaco had dominated the 2008 season as no team in a major Australian Rules League had since Port Adelaide in the 1914 SAFL season.Devaney, John; "The Invincibles at Play" (archived) After twenty home-and-away games the Lions had lost just one game by the narrowest of margins to their Grand Final rivals in mid-season, with the closest any other opponent got to them being eighteen points.Subiaco's 2008 Fixture The Lions were targeting their third straight WAFL flag, and their fourth in just five years, all the while finishing an unprecedented seven and a half games clear of second-placed West Perth. Swan Districts had finished fourth at the end of the season and had beat two higher ranked opponents in South Fremantle and West Perth to get to this match.
Aside from after a home win over Bristol Rovers in February, United were in the bottom four from late November until the final day of the season, when results went in their favour and they beat Preston North End to secure League One survival by the narrowest of margins. For the fourth successive year, Colchester failed to reach the second round of the League Cup following defeat by Charlton Athletic, and despite a bye to the second round of the Football League Trophy, Gillingham won 4–2 on penalties at the Colchester Community Stadium. Colchester did reach the third round of the FA Cup, featuring in two televised matches. Cardiff City comfortably beat the U's 3–1 following a first round win at Gosport Borough and a second round victory at home to Peterborough United.
8 began a long period as a cellar-dweller with a fall to sixth. Claremont, with captain George Moloney returning to the goalfront from the centre, won their second consecutive premiership despite the loss of many key players in the week before the Grand Final, whilst East Fremantle and East Perth remained firmly entrenched in the top and had a neck-and-neck battle late in the season for the double chance. Perth and South Fremantle, both of whom had had long periods in the wilderness, fought an exciting battle for the last place in the top four that ended with the red and whites winning by the narrowest of margins, in the process providing a basis for the club's dynasty following World War II, which began on the weekend of the penultimate round.
The following season, title contenders Huddersfield fought off Cardiff City and Sunderland to be crowned champions of England for the first time, although it was by the narrowest of margins. Goal average proved to be decisive as Town and Cardiff both finished on 57 points, Huddersfield winning it by a difference of 0.024 (1.818 to 1.794) in goal average. This proved the importance of the third Huddersfield goal scored by Brown in a 3–0 win over Nottingham Forest and the missed penalty of Cardiff against Birmingham in the last match of the season. The Terriers only had five different scorers in the league all season; George Brown with 8 goals, George Cook with 9, Clem Stephenson with 11, Billy Smith with 13 and Charlie Wilson with 18.
Liang received a wildcard nomination to the Main Tour despite not qualifying directly; this was because he won the 2005 IBSF World Under-21 Championship, and also because not all of the players that were eligible for the Main Tour took their places. In his first ranking tournament, the Grand Prix, he lost in the first qualifying round to Rory McLeod 2–5. He fared better in the next ranking event, the UK Championship, where he almost whitewashed Alfred Burden in the first qualifying round 9–1, but subsequently lost in the second qualifying round to Marcus Campbell by the narrowest of margins, 8–9. Liang qualified for his first ranking event at the Welsh Open, beating Sean Storey, Jamie Burnett and Rory McLeod to reach the main draw.
During the 1995 referendum, Boucher and the rest of the Hells Angels supported the Non side, with Boucher issuing a statement declaring his support for a united Canada a few days before the referendum, and Hells Angels clubhouses in Quebec all flew the Canadian flag as sign of their support for federalism. The Hells Angels put up posters all over Montreal, Quebec City and other cities in Quebec urging voters to vote no, and significantly, Quebec separatists who usually vandalized non posters never damaged the posters put up by the Angels. As the non side won the 1995 referendum by the narrowest of margins, it is widely believed that Boucher's decision to have the Angels support the no side may have prevented Quebec from leaving Canada in 1995.
Chrétien and the Liberals condemned all of Reform's initiatives as not only unhelpful but characterized them as a deliberate attempt to aid the sovereigntist cause since the West would have greater influence in a Canada without Quebec. Manning has described the night of October 30, 1995, as his "worst night in Ottawa and federal politics", as the results came in on the referendum vote. When the final ballots had been counted, Quebecers rejected the sovereignty association option by the narrowest of margins – the No option receiving 50.58 percent of the 4,671, 008 votes cast, only 54,288 more than the total Yes vote. From Manning's perspective, the Chrétien government and the 35th Parliament had barely escaped going down as the federal government and parliament that presided over the disintegration of Canadian confederation.
The 2011 GB Amateur Boxing Championships were staged at York Hall, London on 11 and 12 November 2011. The most hotly anticipated bout going into the second GB Championships was in the flyweight division between Welshman Andrew Selby and Khalid Yafai of England. After both boxers had got past the quarter-final stage of 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Baku one month previous, it meant they would have to box off for a place at the 2012 Summer Olympics if neither boxer took gold in Azerbaijan, and Selby missed that achievement by the narrowest of margins in the final, losing 13:12. The pair met on 11 November for the first of a scheduled three fights to decide which boxer would secure Olympic qualification, with Selby recording a convincing 26:12 victory.
Calvert, Robert A. Texas Since World War II, Handbook of Texas Online Prior to a series of gaffes, he was leading Richards (the race was dubbed "Claytie vs. The Lady" in the polls) and was in striking distance of becoming then-only the second Republican governor of Texas since Reconstruction after Clements. In one of his widely publicized missteps, Williams refused to shake hands with Ann Richards in a public debate, an act seen as uncouth. (Senator John Tower had similarly refused to shake the hand of Democratic opponent Robert Krueger in a 1978 appearance in Houston but went on to win a fourth term by the narrowest of margins.) Republican political activist Susan Weddington of San Antonio, a Williams supporter, placed a black wreath that read "Death to the Family" at the door of Ann Richards's campaign headquarters in Austin.
Tutzó competed for the Spanish sailing squad, as a crew member in the women's 470 class, at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She and skipper Vía Dufresne topped the selection criteria by an effortless, 82-point edge over the other tandem Gallego and Támara Echegoyen to lock the country's 470 berth among the females for the Games at the class-associated Worlds nearly eight months earlier in Melbourne, Australia. The Spanish duo entered the final race with a couple of runner-up marks recorded throughout the series, both of which came close to their provisional fourth and ninth-leg triumph, respectively, by the narrowest of margins. A costly penalty turn for an incident at the final upwind mark, however, pushed both Tutzó and Vía Dufresne to the back and out of the medals, sitting them in the tenth overall spot with 92 net points.
Greg Allen set new season scoring records for a home Altrincham player in finishing as top League scorer with acknowledged assistance from forward linemates Jason Hewitt and Billy Price (second and third in League scoring). A nailbiting 8-7 away win against Sheffield in the playoffs probably represented the Aces’ most exciting win to date and Aces clinched a place in the National Playoff Finals with a 6-1 victory in a decider over Kingston in the last official match played at the Devonshire Road ice rink. Despite the lack of home ice and regular training, the Aces played Basingstoke Buffalo in the finals and won the first leg 5-4 at Blackburn Ice Arena. The return leg, the next day, left us with a case of ‘what might have been’ as a 5-4 loss in normal time led to sudden death overtime and the title being lost by the narrowest of margins as Buffalo got the vital goal.

In 1996, Hernandez wrote one of the last open space ballot initiatives to pass in the City of Los Angeles known as Proposition K. Hernandez, noting the initiative’s lettered named “K” stood for “Kids”, traversed the City for months leading up to the election raising money for the campaign while lobbying communities, both rich and poor, throughout Los Angeles for their support. Hernandez’ efforts paid off as the initiative was approved by Los Angeles voters by the narrowest of margins. Once passed, Prop K created a citywide assessment district for a term of 30 years generating $25 million each year. Funds raised through Proposition K are specifically for the acquisitions of land for open space purposes, and the improvement, construction, and maintenance of parks, recreation, childcare and community facilities. Hernandez’ initiative, by the year 2026, will have raised a total of $750 million for these purposes as funds continue to be generated to this day.
On October 30, 1995, the federalist non side won by the narrowest of margins. Chrétien blamed the narrow victory on the Quebec Liberals under Johnson, whom he claimed had betrayed him, argued the federalists would have done much better if only he had intervened in the referendum earlier, and presented the non case in terms of Trudeau-style "hard federalism" instead of the "soft federalist" non case presented by Johnson, which depicted the benefits of Confederation in purely economic terms and had a strongly nationalist (albeit federalist) tone of language.Jeffrey, Brooke Divided Loyalties Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2010, page 283 In the aftermath of the narrow victory in the referendum, Chrétien started in late 1995 a new policy of "tough love", also known as "Plan B", where the federal government sought to discredit Quebec separatism by making it clear to the people of Quebec how difficult it would be to leave Canada.
After a few drives they tried to execute a sweeping move but Matty Smith was easily cut down. On the next tackle Danny Brough received the ball to the left and threw a cut-out pass for winger Tom Briscoe to score by the narrowest of margins with Joel Monaghan nearly taking him into touch. Brough could not convert and the Exile's still led by 26-14. However their fightback was short lived as 3 minutes later Lincoln Withers ran from dummy half to attract 3 England players to him, Withers then passed the Daniel Holdsworth who skipped through Danny Brough's tackle to race 30m before passing to Francis Meli who had a clear run to the line for his 2nd of the night (this would also take him to 4 International Origin tries making him the leading scorer), he also improved the angle of the kick by scoring underneath the posts.
The change of leader from Margaret Thatcher to John Major saw a revival in Tory support, with the double-digit lead in the opinion polls for the Labour Party being replaced by a narrow Conservative one by the turn of 1991. Although a general election did not have to be held until June 1992, Labour leader Neil Kinnock kept pressurising Major to hold an election during 1991, but Major resisted the calls and there was no election that year. The recession which began in the autumn of 1990 deepened during 1991, with unemployment standing at nearly 2.5 million by December 1991, compared to 1.6 million just 18 months earlier. Despite this, Tory support in the opinion polls remained relatively strong, with any Labour lead now being by the narrowest of margins, although Labour still made some gains at the expense of the Tories in local elections, and seized the Monmouth seat from the Tories in a by-election.

Between 1988 and 1992, the programme's main presenter was Elton Welsby, with Jim Rosenthal sometimes acting as a touchline reporter and interviewer. Former presenter Brian Moore was often the main match commentator, and on other occasions it was Alan Parry. The first live game under that title was on 30 October 1988 when Everton and Manchester United drew 1-1. Much of the coverage focused on the destiny of the First Division title, most memorably on 26 May 1989 when Arsenal's decisive 2–0 win at Liverpool won them the championship by the narrowest of margins at their opponents' expense. ITV lost rights to the new Premier League to British Sky Broadcasting and the BBC in 1992, and the final top-flight match shown live being Liverpool's 2-0 win over Manchester United on 26 April 1992, a result that sealed the title for Leeds United, who won 3-2 at Sheffield United earlier the same day.
They annihilated Houston Leones 7–0, and beat the New Orleans Shell Shockers 4–0 on the final day with a hat trick from Felix Garcia to secure second place in the division by one point from El Paso, squeaking into the playoffs by the narrowest of margins. Laredo traveled to Florida for the Southern conference tournament; they beat Central Florida Kraze 2–1 in the semifinal, and exacted sweet revenge over Austin Aztex U23 by beating them 3–1 in the conference championship game, thereby securing their third straight title, and their third consecutive trip to the national final four. Their opponents in the semifinal were the surprise Eastern champs, Reading Rage, who they beat 2–0 to advance to their third straight PDL Championship Game, and in doing so became the first team in PDL history to achieve such a feat. In the final they faced Central Conference champions Thunder Bay Chill, and despite taking the lead, and despite Thunder Bay having a man sent off, had to settle for a 1–1 tie after extra time.
However, following a positive response from a number of local people keen to see the Club continue, a new committee was formed under the chairmanship of John Smith and the resignation was withdrawn. The Club's re- introduction to Division Two at the start of 2002–03 got off to an unpromising start but, after bringing in Neil Hixon as Manager, the Star failed by the narrowest of margins to gain an immediate return to Division One. Unfortunately for the Club, Neil's achievements resulted in him being snapped up by Durham City shortly after the start of last season, effectively putting our promotion aspirations on hold for at least another year. However, with experienced Northern League manager Peter Mulcaster steadying the ship, the Club finished in a respectable mid-table position. Neil Hixon returned as manager in 2005 and along with Stuart Gooden and former Sunderland & Scottish International George Herd put together a side that won promotion back to the First Division in the 2006–07 season. The following season Hixon & Herd moved to Sunderland RCA and Gooden took over the team which finished in a creditable 8th place in the table.
