Immobilized by the injury, Patchen's sole caretaker was his wife, and since he was bedridden, he wrote and painted poems from his bed with her assistance. He also has received a National Endowment for the Humanities summer grant and a Fulbright Teaching Lectureship to Italy. Smith is married to Ann Smith also of Mingo Junction, a professor of nursing at the Medical College of Ohio. Together with her and others they founded Converging Paths Meditation Center in Sandusky, Ohio. Smith is the director of The Firelands Writing Center and of Bottom Dog Press.

Daily Mail obituary, May 1933, quoted in Hyman, p. 290 The Straits Times of Singapore thought that Bottomley could have rivalled Lloyd George as a national leader: "Though he deserved his fate, the news of his passing will awaken the many regrets for the good which he did when he was Bottomley the reformer and crusader and the champion of the bottom dog". A later historian, Maurice Cowling, pays tribute to Bottomley's capacity and industry, and to his forceful campaigns in support of liberty. In his sketch for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Morris delivers a different judgement: "[H]e claimed to serve the interests of others, but sought only his own gratification".

The Cleveland State University Poetry Center serves as an academic center for poetry. Cleveland continues to have a thriving literary and poetry community,Larry Smith, Mary E. Weems, and Nina Freedlander Gibans, editors, Cleveland Poetry Scenes, Bottom Dog Press (2008); J. Burroughs (ed.), Songs in the Key of Cleveland: An Anthology of the 2013 Best Cleveland Poem Competition, Crisis Chronicles Press (2014) with regular poetry readings at bookstores, coffee shops, and various other venues.A calendar of Cleveland area poetry events can be found at Clevelandpoetics (accessed November 25, 2014). Cleveland is the site of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, established by poet and philanthropist Edith Anisfield Wolf in 1935, which recognizes books that have made important contributions to understanding of racism and human diversity.

The FWC encourages members of the Firelands community to become writers and lovers of the written word, and also hosts monthly poetry readings at a local coffeehouse in Sandusky, Ohio as venue for artists, poets and writers to showcase their work. Smith has in addition presented at many working class studies conferences over the years and is acknowledged nationally as an expert on the works of Kenneth Patchen. Smith is also the principal of Bottom Dog Publishers and the Bird Dog Press—two local publishing firms devoted to the promotion of Midwestern and working class literature, since his retirement from active teaching, he has expanded his publishing activities. Faculty, past and present, have made great contributions to their disciplines and used their expertise to enhance student learning at BGSU Firelands.
