If this could be validated by larger studies, Ross said, this would help ease one of her main concerns about liquid biopsies: the prevalence of false positives (which may cause the patient to unnecessarily undergo severe radiation and chemo treatments or simply suffer with the knowledge of an incurable cancer longer) false negatives (which may allow the cancer to grow undetected).

Hans Clevers, group leader at the Hubrecht Institute for Developmental Biology and Stem Cell Research, who was not part of this study but helped create the organoid technique used in this trial, tells Axios: What they did during the 3-year trial: The researchers took 110 fresh tumor biopsies from 71 gastrointestinal patients and used them to create patient-derived organoids.

They are competing with buyers from Customs and Border Protection, the State Department, various federal and local law enforcement entities, private security companies, agencies requiring search and rescue dogs, companies in the hospitality industry that need dogs to sniff out bed bugs, health care providers that use dogs to sniff breath, blood and biopsies to make medical diagnoses — and, of course, foreign governments.

For all the promise, there is also a downside to using M.R.I.s for breast cancer screening: They yield many false positive results that lead to unnecessary biopsies, and they can detect very early stage tumors that might never become life-threatening, said Carla van Gils, senior author of the study and a professor of clinical epidemiology at University Medical Center Utrecht.

And, importantly: When the researchers analyzed the blood of the 44 healthy volunteers, their tests showed very little false positives (roughly one false positive per 3.3 million letters of DNA sequenced.) Another perspective: Theodora Ross, an oncologist at the UT Southwestern Medical Center who did not participate in any of these studies, told Axios it is too early to believe the hype surrounding liquid biopsies.

A former official at biotech firm, Vion Pharmaceuticals, that experienced a failed trial in the first-ever attempt to use Salmonella as a cancer-fighting agent decades ago, said this week it might have continued with more trials if this technique had been available because the ultrasound would have allowed it to better track the bacteria to see if they were successfully colonizing patient tumors — Vion had to use tissue biopsies.

Paige focuses specifically on cancer pathology — that is, reading tissue samples of people who already have the disease, and have had biopsies and other tests in order to determine what kind of cancer is being dealt with, how advanced it is, whether it's a primary or secondary, and other details: these details become essential to get right so that a patient can be suggested more targeted treatments (another area where AI and other advanced tech is being used to craft more nuanced approaches specific to the person being treated).
