I would only be comfortable with deploying solar geoengineering - the idea of deliberately increasing the reflectivity of the planet, most likely by introducing aerosols into the stratosphere - on a scale large enough to alter the climate if three basic conditions were met: At least a decade of serious international, open-access, transparent, and collaborative scientific research, including multiple small-scale field experiments.

"It's important for the FDA, the e-cigarette companies and vapers themselves to know that these heating coils, as currently made, seem to be leaking toxic metals—which then get into the aerosols that vapers inhale," study senior author Ana María Rule, PhD, MHS, an assistant scientist in the Bloomberg School's Department of Environmental Health and Engineering, said in a statement.

Given that any government could conceivably engage in this project for only about $10 billion a year (a pittance for a number of large or rich countries affected by climate change, like India, China, or the whole developed world), it will become very tempting for a country looking to avoid displacing citizens due to sea level rise, or trying to prevent catastrophic weather events, to spray aerosols into the atmosphere unilaterally.

The summary of a report that accepted predictions from climate models, included the following caveat, "Because there is considerable uncertainty in current understanding of how the climate system varies naturally and reacts to emissions of greenhouse gases and aerosols, current estimates of the magnitude of future warming should be regarded as tentative and subject to future adjustments (either upward or downward.)" The last assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) still lists a number of factors for which our state of knowledge is limited.
