William Colman scored 468 runs and took 90 wickets in 1922/23, which is still a record for most wickets & points in a single season. In 2010, the Kent RFU were brought into national attention following an incident in a Kent Cup match between Maidstone and Gravesend where a Gravesend player was blinded in one eye as a result of eye-gouging. Despite a statement from the County Chairman that there would be a long ban for the perpetrator, there were no charges from either the Kent RFU, The RFU or Kent Police due to lack of evidence available. As a result, instead, Maidstone were fined £2,000 and deducted 50 league points for failing to identify the player. In modern times Kent have yo-yoed between Division 1 and Division 2 of the championships, with the most recent silverware claimed being the 2014 Plate when the defeated Durham 30–23 at Twickenham Stadium.

Further spells in the third and fourth tiers preceded two successive promotions in the mid-1990s: third place in Division Threeafter the Premier League broke away from the Football League in 1992, the divisions were renumbered upwardsfollowed by the Division Two title in 1996–97 brought Bury to the second tier for the first time in forty years. After two seasons they were relegated, and by 2002, financial problems brought the club into administration and to the brink of folding. A supporters' campaign raised enough money to keep the club afloat, and in recognition of his role within that process, UEFA presented club press officer Gordon Sorfleet with their Best Supporter award for 2002. Bury were relegated at the end of that season, and then yo-yoed between the third and fourth tiers.

Their place was taken by Southern League runners-up Hereford United, who had received widespread attention during an FA Cup run that included their dramatic elimination of top-flight team Newcastle United in front of the television cameras. Barrow struggled for seven seasons in the Northern Premier League (NPL) before joining the newly formed Alliance Premier League (APL), where they lasted four seasons before being relegated back to the NPL. They bounced straight back as 1983–84 title-winners, and yo-yoed between the two for the next 20 years, during which time the APL was renamed the Football Conference. They won further NPL titles in 1988–89 and 1997–98, and won their first national silverware, the FA Trophy, in the 1989–90 season, beating Leek Town 3–0 in the final they would win their second FA Trophy 20 years later, with an extra-time victory over Stevenage Borough.

He interrupted his studies and served some years as oboist for J. C. Williamson theatres, playing musicals, opera, and several Gilbert and Sullivan Opera seasons, several ballet seasons (Borovansky Ballet), Australian tours of the Royal Covent Garden Ballet, and the American Ballet Company, and as a copyist / arranger with GTV channel 9. In 1961 Ian Harris moved to Hobart, Tasmania (Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra), was seconded to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (cor anglais) for several months, returned to Tasmania only to be seconded again 1964, this time to the Victorian Symphony Orchestra (oboe). Back again in Tasmania, his next move was to Wellington, New Zealand (1965–1974) to join NZBCSO (the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation Symphony Orchestra) as Principal Cor anglais. During this time, in which he yo-yoed across Australasia, Harris tutored in oboe at the universities of Tasmania, Melbourne, and the Victoria University of Wellington.

The latter was the first of many prolific strikers/forwards to play for Chelsea; he scored five goals on his debut and 27 in the promotion season en route to becoming the first player to score 100 goals for the club. Chelsea's complete roster for the 1911–12 season Lewis was succeeded by David Calderhead, who was to manage Chelsea for the next 26 years. The club's early seasons produced little success, and they yo- yoed between the First and Second divisions. They were relegated in 1909–10, promoted in 1911–12 and finished 19th in 1914–15, the final competitive season before football in England was suspended owing to World War I. The club would normally have been relegated, but when regular football resumed in 1919 the league was expanded to 22 teams and Chelsea were re-elected to the First Division. In 1915, under the shadow of the First World War, Chelsea reached their first FA Cup final, the so-called "Khaki" cup final, owing to the large number of uniformed soldiers in attendance.

Walsall RFC was formed in 1922. Historically part of Staffordshire they were first members of the North Midlands Rugby Football Union before joining the Staffordshire Rugby Union as it became established in the 1960s. In the 1970s and early 1980s Walsall would become one the most successful clubs in Staffordshire rugby winning the inaugural Staffordshire Senior Cup during the 1976–77 season and would go on to win the cup 5 times in the first 10 years of the competition. The advent of league rugby in 1987–88 saw Walsall placed in Courage Midlands 1, which was the top division of the region, ranked at tier 5 of the English rugby union system. The club did not stay in this division for long and in 1988–89 they finished as champions and gained promotion to the national leagues, to what was then known as Area League North (now National League 2 North). The 1990s were a chaotic time in the English league system due to RFU restructuring and this was both to Walsall's benefit and detriment as they yo-yoed between the divisions, dropping to division 5 in 1993–94, all the way up to division 3 (the highest level in the club's history) by 1996–97, before settling back into division 4 by the turn of the century.
