Trump appears to make unilateral decisions surrounded by a cabinet of yes-men and acolytes because he has chased out advisers like Mattis, former National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and former Chief of Staff John Kelly, all of whom tended to push back against Trump's more ill-advised decisions.

And it also follows hard on Trump's weekend at the so-called "Winter White House" in which he huddled with the likes of Sean Hannity, Jeannine Pirro and Don King -- a who's who of Trump "yes" men (and women) who tell the President that his gut instincts on, well, everything are all that matters.

It is remarkable, and not a bit weird, how quickly the Bush years have receded into the past, with Bush himself the recipient of a Trump-era nostalgia for a time when men (yes, men) of character occupied the White House, honored the office and took the responsibilities of "leader of the free world" seriously.

It's on his Republican primary opponents and their staffers, who either failed to uncover or failed to deploy the information becoming public now; it's on Republican voters, who saw traces of this kind of behavior in Trump's documented record and either didn't care or applauded it; it's on Trump's inner circle for ignoring what they knew and lacking the curiosity to search for more; and on Trump himself for preferring to surround himself with opportunists and yes-men rather than people of even minimal character.
