A boat became disabled during the storm, forcing its four occupants to ride out the storm for four days on Cockermouth Island until they were rescued by helicopter. Hill Inlet, 2009 The Whitsunday Islands lie midway along Australia's Queensland coast and are bordered by the Great Barrier Reef and the waters of the Coral Sea. Migrating humpback whales favour the waters around the Whitsunday Islands as a calving ground between May and September each year. Jason Noel Costigan (born 13 June 1971) is an Australian politician in the Queensland Legislative Assembly for the district of Whitsunday for the North Queensland First party. Formerly Costigan was an independent politician and rugby league commentator. He was a member of the Liberal National Party (LNP) until being expelled from the party in February 2019. He has been a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland for Whitsunday, having defeated Jan Jarratt at the 2012 state election.

Hamilton Island is the largest inhabited island of the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland, Australia. It is approximately north of Brisbane and south of Cairns. It is also one of the only islands in the Great Barrier Reef with its own commercial airport, with short direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns. Like most in the Whitsunday group, Hamilton Island was formed as sea levels rose which created numerous drowned mountains that are situated close to the east coast of Queensland.

Bowen is the only state or federal electorate in Australia to elect a Communist member, Fred Paterson, who served as member for Bowen from the 1944 election until the 1950 election. In a 1949 redistribution, Bowen was abolished, being split between the new electoral districts of Burdekin and Whitsunday. It has been suggested that the redistribution was done deliberately to split Paterson's electoral support and prevent him from being returned to parliament in the 1950 election. Paterson contested Whitsunday but was unsuccessful.

Chalkie's Beach Chalkie's Beach (also known as Stockyard Beach) is located on the western coast of Haslewood Island in the Whitsunday Islands of Queensland, Australia. It lies across from the more popular Whitehaven Beach on the main Whitsunday Island. The common name originates from a nickname for local businessman David Hutchen, whose yacht, the Banjo Paterson, frequented the beach as a destination in day cruises. "Chalkie" refers to Hutchen's use of a blackboard for scorekeeping in beer-drinking contests following the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

South Molle Island, part of the Whitsunday Islands, is a resort island in the Whitsunday section of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park in Australia. The hilly island has numerous bays and inlets accessible by 16 km of walking and cycling tracks, with most protected in the Molle Islands National Park. The islands were named by Lieutenant Charles Jefferys in 1815 after Colonel George James Molle, the then Lieutenant Governor of New South Wales. Severe Tropical Cyclone Ada was a small but intense tropical cyclone that severely impacted the Whitsunday Region of Queensland, Australia, in January 1970. It has been described as a defining event in the history of the Whitsunday Islands, and was the most damaging storm in the mainland town of Proserpine's history at the time. Forming over the far eastern Coral Sea in early January, the weather disturbance that would become Ada remained weak and disorganised for nearly two weeks as it slowly moved in a clockwise loop. Accelerating toward the southwest, the system was named Ada on 15 January.

Whitsun (also Whitsunday or Whit Sunday) is the name used in Britain and Ireland, and throughout the world among Catholic, Anglicans and Methodists, for the Christian festival of Pentecost. It is the seventh Sunday after Easter, which commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Christ's disciples (Acts 2). In England it took on some characteristics of Beltane, which originated from the pagan celebration of Summer's Day, the beginning of the summer half-year, in Europe. In Scotland through the mid- to late 1800s, chalking the primary door of a tenement was a way of notifying residents that they must move from their residence by a given day. By custom, leases and other similar contracts began or ended on the Scottish Term Days, which are Whitsunday and Martinmas. If a landlord wished to evict tenants in a particular tenement, the law dictated that, at the landlord's request, a burgh officer, in presence of witnesses, would chalk the primary door of the tenement forty days before Whitsunday or St. Martin's Day. The burgh officer would then record the fact that the chalking had been accomplished and this document was signed by the officer and the witnesses.

The Whitsunday Sports Park (also known as the Airlie Sports Park) is in the most western part of the locality on Shute Harbour Road. It has a rectangular and an oval field, netball courts and two clubhouses. It is home to clubs of various codes of football, netball and softball.

The Native Police officer at the logging camp of Eugene Fitzalan on Whitsunday Island was notified. A large punitive mission afterwards set out in two schooners under Lieut. Williams. They destroyed the native camp and burnt or impounded all the canoes found. The aboriginals themselves apparently escaped into the mountainous terrain.

William Goddard built the church with the first service was held on November 23, 1873. Total cost of the construction including furniture was $2,200. Bowen is a coastal town and locality in the Whitsunday Region on the eastern coast of Queensland, Australia. The locality is a large one, and contains two other towns, Heronvale () and Merinda (). The Abbot Point coal shipping port is also within the locality. At the 2016 census, Bowen had a population of 10,377.

Disagreements between Fitzalan and other local officials over the logging and building contracts saw delays to the actual construction of the buildings. As a result of Fitzalan's logging ventures in the area, several places are named after him, including Fitzalan Island and Fitzalan passage near Whitsunday Island. Fitzalan's interest in developing the area is reflected in his 1872 poem in which he envisions each of the Whitsunday Islands being owned individually by notable Bowen residents who would replace the forests with grand houses and gardens. In December 1886 the Cairns Municipal Council came to an agreement with Eugene Fitzalan, a trained botanist, to establish an ornamental garden on a recreation reserve (now the Flecker Botanical Gardens), sufficiently attractive to entice the public.

Whitehaven Beach Whitehaven Beach is a 7 km stretch along Whitsunday Island, Australia. The island is accessible by boat, seaplane & helicopter from Airlie Beach, as well as Hamilton Island. It lies across from Stockyard Beach, better known as Chalkie's Beach, on Haslewood Island. The beach is known for its crystal white silica sands and turquoise coloured waters.

This church, erected in 770 inside the Propylea of the Portico of Octavia, had a great historical importance during the Middle Ages. From here, on the Whitsunday of 1347, the Romans, led by Cola di Rienzo, launched the assault on the Capitol, attempting to restore the Roman Republic. This region now forms part of the region of Sant'Angelo.

It also operated seasonal flights to the Gold Coast and Adelaide. The airport underwent an upgrade in 2010. The upgraded terminal was officially opened on 20 December 2011. In January 2014, Whitsunday Regional Council announced it was to discuss with the Government of Queensland the process for designating the airport precinct a PDA (Priority Development Area).

In August 2008, Queensland Government announced a review to study environmentally acceptable ways for the oil shale development. In November 2008, a 20-year moratorium was placed on oil shale mining in the Whitsunday Region. The granting of new tenures and variation of existing entitlements relating to oil shale were suspended until considering the oil shale review.

It is always observed on the Sunday before Whitsunday. In the 18th century, Dickenschied belonged to Baden until 1796, whereafter it spent almost 20 years under French sovereignty. Frustrations were growing by the day during spring of 1903. By Whitsunday, about 2000 angry fishermen were in harbour in Mehamn. At the time, the village had 123 permanent residents. When the new manager of the whaling station denied help to a fishing boat that came from sea with a broken helm, the fishermen had had enough.

ATI subsequently took over its rival, Barrier Reef Airways. Ansett developed Hayman Island into a major holiday resort in the Whitsunday region. BRA's Short S.25 Sandringham flying boats were later used by Ansett Flying Boat Services on the Sydney-Lord Howe Island route. The service, from Rose Bay Base on Sydney Harbour, was maintained until 1974.

Baltai (Modvin: Балта́й) is a festival among Mordvin people, especially from Tatarstan. The name of the holiday means Feast of Honey (from Tatar words bal - honey and tuy - feast). Baltai is held on the first Sunday after the Whitsunday and means the beginning of mowing time. The main traditions are the decorating of bear with birch leaves and round dance.

The Englishman Samuel Wallis was the first recorded European to visit Pinaki Atoll on June 6, 1767 while searching for the "Southern Continent". Wallis named the atoll "Whitsunday". Frederick Beechey found Pinaki uninhabited in 1826, but he observed that there were huts on the island as well as small reservoirs for the collection and preservation of fresh water cut in the coral rock.

Trade with the Ngaro people in the nearby islands has also been documented. Billy Moogerah, who was the last Aboriginal person to live in the Whitsunday Islands, used to canoe from the islands to Cape Palmerston, making stops along the way for trade in Cape Hillsborough and Freshwater Point. However, Moogerah was removed from the islands when Bowen township was first settled.

On 18 October 1934, a cairn was unveiled in Santa Barbara Park in Bowen, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the landing of Captain Sinclair in Port Denison. On 16 October 2009, the Captain Henry Sinclair monument was unveiled in the Santa Barbara Park in Bowen, commemorating 150 years since Captain Sinclair sailed into Port Denison. It was erected by the Whitsunday Regional Council.

The resort was the first Club Med established in the Whitsunday Islands and in 1992 became the only Club Med village in Australia. Lindeman Island resort was closed on 31 January 2012. On the 27 April 2012 it was purchased by White Horse Holding, a Chinese firm, for $12 million. The price paid was considerably lower than expected because the resort needed refurbishment.

The 1981 Barrington Tops Cessna 210 disappearance relates to the mysterious disappearance of a Cessna 210 flying from Whitsunday Coast Airport to Bankstown Airport via Gold Coast Airport. The last known contact with the aircraft was in the Barrington Tops area. Nothing further was heard and no trace of the aircraft or its occupants has so far been found despite extensive searches.

Suttor River Causeway is a heritage-listed causeway across the Suttor River on the Old Bowen Downs Road, now at St Anns Road, Mount Coolon, Whitsunday Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built in 1876 by the Queensland Department of Public Works. It is also known as St Anns Crossing and Old Bowen Downs Road. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 18 September 2008.

Goats roamed wild and visitors were requested to shoot only for food. Before the end of WW2, Reg Ansett of Ansett Australia saw the potential of the area and began planning for air services. Starting in 1952 Barrier Reef Airways began flying boat services to a number of islands including Lindeman. Ansett opened Proserpine or Whitsunday Coast Airport in 1957 to allow transfers to smaller island aircraft.

It is also home to UnderWater World and Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo. Its hinterland includes the Glass House Mountains National Park. Cairns is renowned as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, Far North Queensland (including Port Douglas) and the Daintree Rainforest. Barnes, Benjamin Alvord (mathematician), and others. On February 21, 1868, St. Luke's was incorporated in Washington Territory.

Proserpine Cemetery is a cemetery located in Proserpine a town in the Whitsunday Region of Queensland, Australia. It opened in the late 1880s and has seen the burials of many of the town's and regions pioneers. It is made up of two sections. The "Old" section which was used from the late 1880s up until the 1980s and a "New" section which is the lawn cemetery that opened in the 1980s.

Assessor macneilli was described in 1935 by G.P. Whitley from specimens collected at Hayman Island in the Whitsunday Passage off Queensland. Whitley did not set out why he chose the name but it is thought that the genus name Assessor means assistant or helper and that the specific name refers to Whitley's colleague, the carcinologist Francis A. McNeill of the Australian Museum. McNeill probably assisted Whitley in his ichthyological collections.

Keswick Island is an island in the southern half of the Whitsunday Islands. Located 34 kilometres north-east of the Queensland city of Mackay, Keswick Island is part of the Cumberland Islands of islands that lay protected inside the waters of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The island is inhabited by a small number of residents. It is a semi-popular tourist destination set to expand with planned development.

Approximately 5,500 people in the Bowen area were also urged to leave. Across Queensland, more than 400 schools and education centres were closed. All flights at Townsville Airport, Proserpine/Whitsunday Coast Airport, Mackay Airport, Hamilton Island Airport and Moranbah Airport were cancelled from 27 March, and Queensland Rail suspended train services between Rockhampton and Townsville. North Queensland Bulk Ports closed the ports at Mackay, Abbot Point and Hay Point.

In 2012, the Proserpine show celebrated 100 years at the showground. The Whitsunday Raceway motorbike track and dirt riders club is located to the south of the town, these facilities have been constructed for racing, driver training and hosting of competitive events. The facility was opened in 2011 and has hosted the Australian Supermoto Championships. This has helped attract lovers of motorbike racing and dirt riding to Proserpine.

Over 25 days, the Fitzroy River discharged about of water into Keppel Bay, reaching the Great Barrier Reef in early January and causing a drop in salinity levels. On Great Keppel Island, about 85% of shallow-water reefs died. Reef damage also occurred in the Whitsunday Islands. The discharge from the Fitzroy River affected various islands and coral groups, depending on the offshore wind direction and ocean current.

Following the storm, looters traveled to Proserpine to pick through ruined homes and boats. The nine-officer police force were unable to manage the outbreak of crime, and a supplemental anti-looting squad soon arrived in the town. Australian Army soldiers and Air Force planes dispatched to the Whitsunday Islands evacuated around 500 people from the devastated resort islands. The inhabitants of Wormer repulsed several attacks of the Frisians and West Frisians in 1280. Floris V, Count of Holland rewarded this with an exemption from paying toll in Holland, an important privilege at that time. Important skirmishes between Spanish troops and the Geuzen took place in Wormer during the Eighty Years' War. At Whitsunday (Pentecost) 30 May 1574, 1400 Spanish soldiers tried to capture Wormer and Jisp.

It has one of the deepest and most unusual valleys of all the rivers in Vidzeme, with up to 45 m high sandstone and dolomite bedrock banks. One of the steepest bank of Amata is the Zvārtes rock. It is more than 350 million years old and its height measures 20m. Folk tales tell that Zvārtes rock used to be a meeting place of witches on Whitsunday, St. John’s Day and Christmas.

Fitzalan chartered the schooner 'Buonaparte' to transport the timber to Port Denison. On one trip, Fitzalan loaded of prepared hoop pine and 40,000 shingles.

Daydream Island is one of seven islands of the Molle Group, a sub-group of the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland, Australia. The island is small, measuring 1 km in length and 400 m at its widest point. The highest point on the island is 51 metres above sea level. There are two tourist resorts on the island: the original resort at the southern end and a newer resort at the north-eastern end.

At the 2011 Australian Census, the island recorded a population of 1,208 people. Hamilton Island is a popular tourist destination all year round. In late August, the island plays host to its annual Hamilton Island Race Week yachting festival, in which more than 250 yachts from across Australia and New Zealand gather for a week of races around the Whitsunday Islands. This is only one of many events hosted on the island.

Hamilton Island was purchased in 1975 by Keith Williams and Bryan Bryt. In 1978, Keith Williams commenced construction of Hamilton Island Harbour and the resort complex shortly after. The resort opened in phases between 1982 and 1984. In 1985, a fire destroyed most of the central portion of the resort complex, which was completely rebuilt by 1986. The current Whitsunday Holiday Apartments opened in 1986 followed by the current Reefview Hotel in 1990.

Frederick Manson Bailey described Ficus tryonii in 1906, from a collection at altitude on Middle Percy Island in the Whitsunday Islands off central Queensland, which is now regarded as F. obliqua. Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander collected and named Ficus virginea from Booby Island in 1770, which was synonymised with F. obliqua by William Philip Hiern in 1901. The species is currently regarded as monotypic. Three varieties of Ficus obliqua were recognised until 2001—F.

Carmila Cane Lift was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register on 5 February 2010 having satisfied the following criteria. The place is important in demonstrating the evolution or pattern of Queensland's history. The Carmila cane lift, located near Sarina, is one of a group of lifts in the Mackay/Whitsunday region, one of Queensland's oldest and most productive sugar cane growing areas. Historically, sugar has been one of the State's most important agricultural commodities.

Flinders exited the reefs near to the Whitsunday Islands and sailed Investigator north to the Torres Strait. On 29 October, they arrived at Murray Island in the east of this strait, where they traded iron for shell necklaces with the local people. The expedition entered the Gulf of Carpentaria on 4 November and charted the coast to Arnhem Land. At Blue Mud Bay the crew, while collecting timber, had a skirmish with local Aboriginal men.

It was not until 1866, when Commander G. S. Nares, Royal Navy, on , carried out a detailed survey of the northern waters of the Whitsunday Passage that the charts were amended to show two separate islands. Dent Island was named after Lieutenant Albert Dent of HMS Salamander. Another small mangrove island in Queensland is known locally as "Dent Island", It is located in the Proserpine River just downstream of the mouth of Saltwater Creek.

Tidemand-Johannessen collaborated with the architect Ulf Nyquist and designed the decorative elements for Torshov Church (Torshov kirke) in Oslo. The church was inaugurated on Whitsunday in 1958, and is considered to be the first modern church building of its kind in Norway. These decorative elements mainly consist of stained-glass windows, glass mosaics and decorative iron-work. At his death, Tidemand-Johannessen had completed three of the twelve stained-glass windows.

Late on 28 February, the cyclone struck the Whitsunday Islands as a Category 1 and later made multiple landfalls on the mainland as a tropical low on 1 March. Kerry curved northward several hours later and re-emerged into the Pacific Ocean. The storm reintensified into a Category 1 on 2 March, before a trough forced the cyclone to curve southeastward. Kerry again weakened while traversing above the Great Barrier Reef and finally dissipated on 5 March.

Whit Monday or Pentecost Monday (also known as Monday of the Holy Spirit) is the holiday celebrated the day after Pentecost, a moveable feast in the Christian calendar. It is moveable because it is determined by the date of Easter. In the Catholic Church, it is the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. Whit Monday gets its English name from "Whitsunday", an English name for Pentecost, one of the three baptismal seasons.

Facilities in four churches (Catholic, Anglican, Uniting, Assembly of God), a pharmacy, a district hospital, some shops and sporting facilities. Sporting facilities include a golf course, rugby league grounds, tennis courts, a public swimming pool, squash courts, and lawn bowls. The town has one newsagent, a bakery, two fuel stations, two medium size grocery stores, two places to buy clothing and a hardware shop. The Whitsunday Regional Council operates the Collinsville Library, located on 37 Conway Street, Collinsville.

Hamilton Island Airport is the only airport in the Whitsunday Islands that is big enough to cater for larger commercial aircraft. Hamilton Island is also served by several ferries, which can only carry passengers. Mainland motor vehicles are prohibited on the island with the exception of those for tradespeople and island public transport. Private transport needs are mostly served by a fleet of golf buggies, available to tourists for rent and are included as part of some accommodation packages.

Hamilton Island State School caters for students from the Preparatory Year to Year 6. It is located on Hamilton Island in the Whitsunday group, twenty kilometres from mainland Australia. It opened on 28 January 1986. The school also offers a range of extra-curricular offerings such as year 4, 5 and 6 students have the opportunity to learn how to sail and from 2018, year 4 students will have the opportunity to complete a PADI Seal Diving certificate.

In 1819 Noble gave up his profession to become the successor of Thomas F. Churchill, M.D., a minister of the Cross Street congregation, which was then worshipping in Lisle Street, Leicester Square. He was ordained on Whitsunday, 1820. His ministry was effective, though he had a speech defect. The congregation, which had been declining, was increased by Noble to a more solid prosperity, and purchased (about 1829) the chapel in Cross Street vacated by Edward Irving.

Compared to many of its neighbouring cities and regions in Queensland, Mackay's tourism industry is small and still developing. This is despite being close to notable attractions including Eungella National Park, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Whitsunday Islands. Latest figures indicate about 685,000 domestic and international visitors come to the region annually. More telling, however, is that domestic and international visitor night stays have increased to 2.7 million annually, an increase of nearly 1 million since 2000.

The rainfordia was first described in 1923 by the Australian ichthyologist Allan Riverstone McCulloch (1885–1925) with the type locality given as the Middle Island, Edgecumbe Bay, Whitsunday Passage, Queensland. It is the only species in the genus Rainfordia which McCulloch named after the collector the type, Mr H.L. Rainford. McCulloch originally placed it as being related to the genus Grammistes but in its own monotypic family, the Rainfordidae, but it is now placed within the tribe Liopropomini.

Costigan worked as an adviser to the Sports Minister in the Howard Government and a media adviser to Senator Ian MacDonald. He is currently a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland for Whitsunday, having defeated Jan Jarratt at the 2012 state election. Costigan was suspended from the LNP in January 2019 after a complaint alleged that he harassed a woman. He denied the charges, but was formally expelled from the party by the executive on 1 February 2019.

The series of 9 episodes was a joint production of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Thames Television. It was filmed on location in the western Samoan village of Salamumu and then on the Whitsunday Islands off the Queensland coast in 1981. The series was first broadcast in Australia on ABC- TV on 6 January 1983.

Proserpine is the gateway to the Whitsunday Region and nearby Great Barrier Reef with most flights to the region from all 3 major capitals arriving at the towns airport, the regions only rail terminus receiving regular services north to Cairns connecting Proserpine with cities such as Townsville and Cairns and south to Brisbane connecting it to cities like Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Sunshine Coast and ultimately Roma Street station in the Brisbane CBD. Bus services such as Greyhound and Premier Motor Service also service the town due to its location on the A1 Bruce Highway, it is also the first town tourists visit heading north in the region. Tourism is increasing in Proserpine with new attractions planned including camping and recreation at the nearby Lake Proserpine, a free RV park, a Waterpark at the Proserpine Pool and an expansion of the Whitsunday Gold Coffee farm and farmers markets on the north side of the town, other attractions include the Proserpine Museum, Crocodile Safari at Glen Isla, Fishing at Lake Proserpine.

Beaufort is one of the characters of Twenty Years After and The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Alexandre Dumas's sequels to The Three Musketeers. The first book chronicles his escape on Whitsunday - plotted by Athos - and lampoons his tendency to utter malapropisms. He also appears in Le Roi Soleil, a French musical which opened in Paris in 2005 where he was played by Merwan Rim. Beaufort is also one of the main characters in the trilogy "Secret d'État", by French novelist Juliette Benzoni.

Shute Harbour takes its name from Shute Island which is about south-east of the headland of Shute Harbour. The island was named by in May 1881 by Captain John Fiot Lee Pearse Maclear of HMS Alert, possibly after a crew-member of that ship. When the Proserpine Shire Council decided to construct tourist facilities in the area in October 1960, they created a town called Shutehaven. On 31 January 1987, the town of Shutehaven was amalgamated into a larger town of Whitsunday.

The Estates passed almost fifty decrees that were ratified by Matthiasinstead of the Regenton 8 June. One decree prescribed that the King "must call and hold, and order to be held, a diet of all the gentlemen of the realm in person" every year on Whitsunday. Matthias held more than 25 Diets during his reign and convoked the Estates more frequently than his predecessors, especially between 1458 and 1476. The Diets were controlled by the barons, whom Matthias appointed and dismissed at will.

The initial rifting of Australia and Antarctica in the Jurassic continued through the Cretaceous, with offshore development of a mid ocean ridge seafloor spreading centre. Tasmania was rifted off during this stage. Cretaceous volcanism in the offshore of Queensland was related to a minor episode of arc formation, typified by the Whitsunday Islands, followed by development of offshore coral platforms, passive margin basins and far-field volcanism throughout the quiet Hunter- Bowen orogenic belt. Cretaceous sedimentation continued in the Surat Basin.

At the 2017 election, Labor won majority with 48 of 93 seats and formed government in the 56th Queensland Parliament. The Liberal Nationals (LNP) won 39 seats and formed opposition. Being allocated to crossbench, the Katter's Australian Party won three seats, One Nation won one seat, the Greens won one seat and Independent Sandy Bolton won the seat of Noosa. Despite two by-elections, the composition of the 56th Parliament was unchanged, with the exception of the member for Whitsunday Jason Costigan.

Elsey developed Daydream Island in the Whitsunday Islands in 1967, only to rebuild it after Cyclone Ada ravaged the island three years later. The Great Barrier Reef has long been known to and used by the Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and is an important part of local groups' cultures and spirituality. The reef is a very popular destination for tourists, especially in the Whitsunday Islands and Cairns regions. Tourism is an important economic activity for the region, generating over AUD$3 billion per year. In November 2014, Google launched Google Underwater Street View in 3D of the Great Barrier Reef.

St Paul's Anglican Church, a striking parabolic arched structure of concrete, brick, timber and glass, is located in Proserpine in the Whitsunday Region of northern Queensland. Orientated with its longitudinal axis north-south, the church is positioned at the front of a long rectangular block on the southern side of Main Street. The church is largely intact, retaining its original furniture and fittings. The most notable alterations have been to the roof, where original translucent sections have been replaced with opaque sheeting.

Sir Edward died in London in 1878. Cust composed a hymn, Whitsunday - No.III, which was included in a compilation, by Reverend Henry Hart Milman, of psalms and hymns to be used in the Church of St. Margaret's, Westminster. And, she donated money to the Society for the Conversion and Religious Instruction and Education of the Negro Slaves in the British West India Islands. Cust was grandmother to Aleen Cust who is considered to be the first female trained veterinary surgeon in Britain.

All observations of the fledgling cyclone were made remotely with weather satellite imagery until it passed over an automated weather station on 16 January. The extremely compact cyclone, with a gale radius of just , intensified into a Category3 severe tropical cyclone just before striking the Whitsunday Islands at 14:00 UTC on 17 January. At 18:30 UTC, Ada's eye crossed the coast at Shute Harbour. The cyclone made little inland progress before stalling northwest of Mackay and dissipating on 19 January.

He had a wife and six grown-up children. Trelawny was born in 1756 at St Budeaux near Plymouth. His great-grandfather's brother Sir Jonathan Trelawny was one of the seven bishops sent to the Tower for defying James II's order to proclaim the Declaration of Indulgence. Trelawny was ordained a Catholic priest in Rome on Whitsunday, 1830 and spent his remaining years trying to arrange for the Passionists or the Rosminians to settle priests at Trelawne to found a permanent mission there.

Dittmer practised in Proserpine (1932–1940) and Brisbane (1940–1943), becoming an ear, nose and throat specialist. He enlisted in the Australian Military Forces in August 1943 and served with the Australian Army Medical Corps until February 1946, when he moved to the Army Reserve. While living in North Queensland, Dittmer bought a gold mine in the Whitsunday Region. He established Dittmer Gold Mines Limited and the town of Dittmer grew up around the mine; the company was liquidated in 1952.

The Ngaro are an Australian Aboriginal group of people who traditionally inhabited the Whitsunday Islands and coastal regions of Queensland, employing a seafaring lifestyle in an area that archaeologically shows evidence of human habitation since 9000 BP. Ngaro society was destroyed by warfare with traders, colonists, and the Australian Native Police. The Native Police Corps forcibly relocated the remaining Ngaro people in 1870 to a penal colony on Palm Island or to the lumber mills of Brampton Island as forced labourers.

Born and raised in Cairns, Zafir is a teacher at Proserpine State High School. He began training in martial arts in 2009 and made his professional debut in mixed martial arts in 2012. He currently runs his camp from his gym at Whitsunday Martial Arts (WMA) with longtime friend and trainer Dan Zealand in Cannonvale, Queensland. Zafir juggles teaching full time with fighting and also travels to train at Townsville and the Sunshine Coast, Queensland where he works closely with coaches Ian Bone and Rob Giuffrida.

The Peak Downs Highway links the towns of Mackay and Clermont in the Australian state of Queensland.Queensland Government - Department of Transport and Main Roads - Maps It represents the main link between Queensland's Whitsunday Coast and the Central West region of the state. The highway runs for a total length of , before joining the Gregory Highway (Highway A7, formerly Highway 55) south to Clermont. Major settlements served by this route include Walkerston, Nebo, Moranbah ( north of the highway, but the largest town along the route) and Clermont.

The name Eimeo was derived from pastoral run name used by Jeremiah Downs Armitage, a pastoralist in the 1870s, possibly because of his birthplace in Tahiti, claimed to be Moorea (also called Eimeo). Eimeo Road State School opened on 5 February 1934. It is the largest primary school in the Whitsunday Region, Mackay Region and Isaac Region but is no longer within the boundaries of the Eimeo but within the neighbouring suburbs of Rural View. Eimeo Post Office opened on 24 January 1949 and closed in 1972.

Italian botanist Guglielmo Gasparrini broke up the genus Ficus in 1844, placing the species in the genus Urostigma as U. rubiginosum. In 1862, Dutch botanist Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel described Urostigma leichhardtii from material collected from Cape Cleveland, Queensland, noting it had affinities to F. rubiginosa. In 1867, he placed Urostigma as a subgenus in the reunited Ficus, which resulted in the taxon becoming Ficus leichhardtii. Miquel also described Ficus leichhardtii variety angustata from Whitsunday Island, later classified as F. shirleyana by Czech botanist Karel Domin.

Many introduced animals have been recorded in the park including the cane toad, red fox, feral cat, rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), black rat (Rattus rattus), house mouse (Mus musculus), and feral pig. The Newbridge Inn was built in 1683 on land owned by Archibald Hope of Raukellour. On 12 December 1700 he sold some of the land, including the Inn, to John Dundas for "20 merks Scots money, 2 lambs, to be given on Whitsunday and Marksmas and 6 good hens yearly on Whitsunday". On 16 July 1726 John Dundas sold the land and the Inn to James Liston for the sum of £385.15.6d. On 6 April 6 1737 Liston sold it to Patrick Hay for "a certain sum of money as the agreed and adequate price and hold me well content and satisfied and paid". In 1759 on 22 August, Patrick Hay sold the land and the Inn to George Reid, a brewer and farmer, for £200.0.0d. George in turn willed it to his son Cumberland Reid on 14 June 1815 and in 1818, Cumberland left it to his nephew, John Reid, a merchant from Leith. John sold it to his brother James for sum of £700.0.0d on 27 August 1821. On 25 March 1824 James Reid sold only the Inn to Helen Cowie Buchanan for £465.0.0d.

Most markets in town are held on Linggplatz. The weekly market is held twice a week and a flea market takes place from April to October on the first Saturday of each month. Other, yearly, markets are the Easter Market on Wednesday before Good Friday, the Whitsun Market on Wednesday before Whitsunday, the Große Lulluskrammarkt ("Great Lullus Traders’ Market") on Wednesday during Lullusfest and the Autumn Market on Penance Day, the Wednesday before 23 November (this day is known in Germany as Buß- und Bettag, an Evangelical observance).

Electoral map of Mackay 2008 Mackay is a Legislative Assembly of Queensland electoral district in North Queensland, Australia, encompassing the inner suburbs of the city of Mackay. Outer suburbs of the city are included in the neighbouring electorates of Mirani and Whitsunday. Mackay has been held by the Labor Party for all but five years since 1915, when it was won by William Forgan Smith, who served as Premier of Queensland from 1932 to 1942. He retired undefeated in 1942 and was replaced by long-serving backbencher Fred Graham.

Later that day it was noticed that a whirlpool had formed and it became evident that the section of the canal between Whitsunday Pie Lock and Retford Town Lock was losing water. Unbeknown to the workmen, but commonly known locally, the plug was an original engineering feature of the canal to allow sections to be drained for future maintenance. The water drained (as designed) harmlessly into the nearby river Idle. The accidental removal of the plug became a national and international story, and was even recorded in Lloyd's List.

The greater part of the abbey was rebuilt in 1457–1458. In 1552 two fairs on 23 April and 28 November were granted by Edward VI to the Earl of Bedford, then lord of the manor. In the 17th century great quantities of cloth were sold at the Friday market, and four fairs were held at the feasts of Saint Michael, Epiphany, Saint Mark, and the Decollation of John the Baptist. The charter of Charles II instituted a Tuesday market, and fairs on the Thursday after Whitsunday and at the feast of Saint Swithin.

In the northern part of the Great Barrier Reef, ribbon reefs and deltaic reefs have formed; these structures are not found in the rest of the reef system. There are no atolls in the system, and reefs attached to the mainland are rare. Fringing reefs are distributed widely, but are most common towards the southern part of the Great Barrier Reef, attached to high islands, for example, the Whitsunday Islands. Lagoonal reefs are found in the southern Great Barrier Reef, and further north, off the coast of Princess Charlotte Bay.

The vessel was boarded and escorted to Medang. In January 1970, Lae responded to rescue operations in the Whitsunday Islands when they were hit by Cyclone Ada. Over three days, the patrol boat battle large seas delivering medical supplies to islands and evacuating injured people, including tourists from Hayman Island at the height of the storm. The vessel's commander, Lieutenant John Scott, RAN, was awarded an MBE for leadership during the rescue efforts, while two other personnel, CPO Kenneth William Matters and RO J Sehi were awarded the BEM.

Lorraine Rita Bird (born 12 February 1942) is a former Australian politician. Bird worked as an antiques dealer and community development worker, and joined the Labor Party in 1979. In 1985 she was elected to Pioneer Shire Council (serving until 1991), and in 1989 was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Whitsunday. In February 1996 she was appointed Shadow Minister for Tourism, and she was shuffled to Shadow Minister for Public Works and Administrative Services in December 1996 before leaving the front bench in August 1997.

It is now simply Cannonvale, while the name Cannon Valley is retained by the inland area. In neighbouring Cannon Valley, the Cannon Valley State School opened in 1910 to service the local farming community, but in 1968 it was decided to relocate the school into Cannonvale as the majority of the students were coming from Cannonvale. The new school buildings in Cannonvale opened in July 1969 with 84 students and the school was then renamed Cannonvale State School. On 31 January 1987, the town of Cannonvale was amalgamated into a larger town of Whitsunday.

The island is officially regarded as the beginning of the Whitsunday group. It was originally part of the Cumberland Isles Group identified by Captain James Cook in 1770, but was not named. The island is one of the Cumberland Isles, later known as Whitsundays, and is now part of the South Cumberland Islands. Designated L Island by Lieutenant Matthew Flinders of the British Royal Navy in September 1802 as one of his numerous alpha-numeric designations along the Queensland coast during his circumnavigation of Australia in HMS Investigator in 1802/3.

Joseph Adolphe Rovan (born Joseph Adolph Rosenthal in Munich, Germany on July 25, 1918, died July 27, 2004), was a French philosopher and politician, and is considered a spiritual father of post-war Europe. Initially born into the Jewish faith, on Whitsunday 1944 he was received into the Catholic Church. Rovan was active in the French Resistance during World War II and was awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Médaille de la Résistance for his services. In 1944, he was arrested by the Gestapo and survived 10 months in the Dachau concentration camp.

Ngaro territory amounted to some , from Whitsunday and Cumberland islands; ranging over Cumberland Islands and including the coastal mainland areas around Cape Conway. Their inland extension reached as far as the mountains to the east of Proserpine. South Molle Island was an important quarry for materials used in stone manufacture, and Nara Inlet on Hook Island affords archaeologists insights into the earliest Ngaro habitation in this area. The Gia people and language have also been assigned Ngaro as a synonym, and vice versa, but it appears that the Gia lived on the mainland.

Stadium Mackay, currently known as its sponsored name BB Print Stadium Mackay, is a rectangular football stadium situated in Mackay, Queensland, Australia. The stadium is home to the Intrust Super Cup's Absolute Enterprises's Mackay Cutters and Queensland State League's Whitsunday Miners. The 2016 to 2020 naming rights deal is the first time a local business has been given naming rights to the stadium and was one of the deciding factors by Mackay Regional Council and CAS Ltd (the board overseeing BB Print Stadium Mackay). BB Print Stadium Mackay was previously known as Virgin Stadium Australia.

She took part in the 1st Fleet re-enactment of the Tall Ships in Sydney Harbour in 1988. Solway Lass was purchased in 1999 by Australian Tall Ship Cruises and sailed from Sydney to the Whitsunday Islands arriving in the Whitsundays in February 1999. After an extensive refurbishment Solway Lass went to sea as a live-aboard charter yacht providing three night cruises around the Whitsundays Islands. In April 2002, the owners and crew of Australian Tall Ship Cruises celebrated with a 100th birthday for Solway Lass in the Whitsundays.

In December 1841 she commissioned at Plymouth under the command of Francis Price Blackwood to survey the Torres Straits in company with the cutter . During the early to mid-1840s, she charted numerous routes through and from many locations around Australia's north-east coast and nearby islands, including Whitsunday Island and the Capricorn Islands. On 2 September 1844, she rescued the survivors of the British merchant ship Lady Grey, which had been wrecked on Alert's Reef the previous day with the loss of a passenger whilst on a voyage from Sydney, New South Wales to Singapore.

In 1816 James visited Italy, and studied painting at Rome and Naples. On his return to England he took holy orders, and resigned his studentship on being presented by the dean and chapter of Christ Church to the vicarage of Flitton-cum-Silsoe in Bedfordshire. James's appointment to the bishopric of Calcutta, in succession to Reginald Heber, came at the end of 1826, and he resigned his vicarage in April 1827. The University of Oxford gave him the degree of D.D. by diploma on 10 May, and on Whitsunday, 3 June, he was consecrated at Lambeth.

Proserpine continued to grow throughout the early 20th century, with the population nearly doubling in the 1920s and a rail link to Mackay, completing the North Coast railway line from Brisbane to Townsville, opening in 1923. However, until the 1950s Proserpine remained a country sugar town, a stopover place rather than a destination in itself, with little appeal to visitors. Proserpine Airport opened in late 1951, boosting tourism to the local area and Whitsunday Islands. The 1950s were a significant period of change and reform within Anglican and other Christian denominations throughout Australia, as they sought to become more relevant to contemporary society.

Founded after World War II by Captain S. Middlemiss and acquired by Ansett Transport Industries in 1950. A small motor boat is ferrying the passengers to the resort. Hayman Island Resort, 1959 Edwin Embury, a schoolteacher, dreamer, and amateur scientist established a biological research laboratory on the island in 1933. The abundant wildlife and proximity to the Great Barrier Reef made Hayman an ideal base for scientific discovery. Map of the Whitsunday Group Whitsundays’ fishermen Bob and Bert Hallam established the Great Barrier Reef Game Fish Angling Club in 1935, attracting local and international game fishing enthusiasts who arrived by coastal steamer.

Henry George Lamond (13 June 1885 – 12 July 1969) was an Australian farmer and writer, notable for his novels about the land, people and animals of outback Queensland. Lamond was born at Carl Creek in Queensland's Gulf country and educated at Brisbane Grammar School and the Queensland Agricultural College. From 1902 to 1927 he worked at jobs ranging from jackeroo to horse-breaker to manager on various properties in western Queensland. From 1927 to 1937 he leased the Molle Islands in the Whitsunday Group near Proserpine, Queensland, farmed on South Molle Island and established a mail service to the mainland.

After a day-long period of arrested development, environmental conditions became highly favourable for renewed intensification. Beginning early on 27 March, Debbie strengthened rapidly from Category 2 to a Category 4 severe tropical cyclone in just 12 hours, and achieving peak sustained winds of 175 km/h (110 mph) and a minimum pressure of 949 hPa (28.02 inHg). After that, the Dvorak intensity given that the storm weakened slightly. Debbie passed over the Whitsunday Islands in the morning of 28 March local time with winds of 165 km/h (105 mph), still at Category 4 intensity.

An unexpected turn to the south during the cyclone's final approach to the Queensland coast brought the storm directly on top of Hamilton Island, where no evacuations took place. Damage was reported on the Whitsunday Islands, as strong winds lifted some roofs from houses; on Hamilton Island, sustained winds reached with gusts up to around 10:28 a.m. local time on 28 March. Winds in excess of battered the island for more than 24 hours. Power outages affected at least 63,000 properties across Queensland, and numerous trees were uprooted during the storm, with some crashing onto homes.

The only habitation on Hook Island is the Hook Island Wilderness Resort which formerly offered the most affordable on-land accommodation in the Whitsunday group before its closure. The modest and now dilapidated buildings are only occupied by permanent caretaking and security staff and visitors are only permitted on the beach as far as the high water mark. The Hook Island Underwater Observatory provided an additional tourist attraction to the island when it was constructed in 1966 but, it was closed following an assessment that found the submarine viewing chamber had insufficient ventilation. Since its closure it too has fallen into disrepair.

Hamilton Island, developed by Williams in the 1970s and 80s Sea World Australia Keith Williams, (22 September 1929 – 19 October 2011) was an Australian entrepreneur who developed some of the best known attractions in Queensland, including Seaworld, Hamilton Island and Port Hinchinbrook. Williams was a self-made multimillionaire who began his career in the 1960s with the creation of a water skiing park in Surfers Paradise. This was followed by a raceway, Seaworld, and Hamilton Island, Daydream Island and Port Hinchinbrook in the Whitsunday Islands. Williams earned a reputation as both a visionary and a pioneer, and as the bane of environmentalists.

The marketplace is set up in a visitor-friendly way with booths occupied by the local clubs. Eating, drinking, Gemütlichkeit, jollity, music and song contribute to the entertainment, and promote the sense of community in the village. On Whitsunday, the Evangelical parish celebrates its yearly parish festival at the rectory and the parish hall. Showing up here for the festivities, food and drink are not only the local parishioners but also guests from outside. For more than two decades, the angling sport club Angelfreunde have been holding their now well known Fischerfest at their clubhouse on the “Rotenhöh” (cadastral area).

On 10 January 1898, on a suggestion from Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen, approximately 50 residents founded the Aegidienberger Spar- und Darlehenskassenverein (Aegidienberg Savings and Loan Association). This cooperative made it possible to extend the water supply beginning in 1902, and from 1908 gave support to the Automobilgesellschaft (automobile association), whose aim was to create a bus connection with Bad Honnef and Königswinter. On Whitsunday, 12 July 1905, a large fire in Orscheid, caused by children who were presumably playing, destroyed 13 buildings.

The precursor to Cyclone Erica was an area of low pressure that formed within a monsoon trough north of the Tiwi Islands on 13 February 2003. This low moved into the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf and then ashore Mainland Australia near the border between Western Australia and Northern Territory on 15 February. It remained over the continent for the latter half of February, taking a track south of Alice Springs, Northern Territory, and then towards Queensland. Now taking an eastward trajectory, the centre of the low emerged into the Coral Sea near the Whitsunday Islands on 3 March.

Despite delays in Brisbane, Yongala arrived in Mackay on the morning of 23 March. After the transfer of passengers and cargo, the ship sailed north for Townsville at 1:40 pm, carrying 49 passengers, 73 crew, and 617 tons of cargo in the lower hold. Five hours later, the lighthouse keeper of the Dent Island Light saw Yongala sail into the Whitsunday Passage; the last known sighting of the ship. Shortly before the vessel left sight of land at Mackay, a telegram was received by the Flat Top signal station warning of a tropical cyclone between Townsville and Mackay.

Mackay General Cemetery was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register on 19 November 2010 having satisfied the following criteria. The place is important in demonstrating the evolution or pattern of Queensland's history. The Mackay General Cemetery is one of the earliest cemeteries established in the Mackay Whitsunday region (1865), and having been in continuous use for more than 140 years until the 1990s when it closed, remains its largest. The cemetery therefore provides important evidence of the history and demography of this key sugar-producing region (one of Queensland's oldest and largest) in particular its cultural and ethnic diversity.

Rugby league is the most popular sport in Mackay, Mackay Cutters rugby league team played their first season in 2008 in the Queensland Cup and act as a feeder team to the North Queensland Cowboys (NRL). The 2nd placed Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs hosted a 'home' game at Mackay against the ladder leading Melbourne Storm in Round 16 of the 2012 NRL season for a record Mackay sporting ground attendance. In soccer, Whitsunday Miners Football Club represents the Mackay region in the Queensland State League (QSL). The Mackay Meteorettes (women) and Mackay Meteors (men) represent the region in the NBL1 North.

The municipality gave the farmstead group 23 ha of land at a price of 1,000 marks for each hectare to set up the Sonnhöfe (actually one homestead, even though the name is grammatically plural). Some woods had to be cleared to make way for cropfields. On 22 December 1956, municipal council decided to build a new schoolhouse in line with planning by the Birkenfeld Building Office because the older building, and the teacher's house, too, had fallen into such disrepair. In 1958, the monument to the fallen and missing in both world wars was festively dedicated on Whitsunday.

View of vessels in Shute Harbour, 2000 Once second only to Sydney’s Circular Quay as the busiest commuter port in Australia and hosting the largest seaplane airbase in the Southern hemisphere, Shute Harbour has faced many years of uncertainty as most ferry operations have moved to marinas in Airlie Beach. Shute Harbour Transit Facility is managed by the Whitsunday Regional Council. Major redevelopment plans for the facility have been flagged due to ageing infrastructure, however much uncertainty exists with the nature of these plans. There are regular bus and taxi services available to and from the port which take the winding road through Conway National Park towards the harbour.

Hamilton Island Golf Club is a golf course located in near the Island Resort Town of Hamilton Island in Queensland's Whitsunday Islands. Over the following three years, Fly traveled and charted from Sandy Cape to Whitsunday Island, and also sailed past a range of other locations including both Swain Reefs and the Capricorn and Bunker Group and the passage between these two. Fly also mapped and marked the outer lines of the Great Barrier Reef. It was, in part, because of Blackwood and his comrades hydrographic and exploratory effort aboard the Fly that a beacon was erected on Raine Island in 1844 with the purpose of allowing surer and safer travel through the Great Barrier Reef and marking the best passage. It was during this time that Bramble surveyed the Endeavour Strait.

The Great Barrier Reef Coast Marine Park is a marine protected area located in Queensland waters adjoining the Great Barrier Reef. It was created on 5 November 2004 by the amalgamation of the following former marine parks - the Mackay/Capricorn Marine Park, the Townville/Whitsunday Marine Park, the Trinity Inlet/ Marlin Coast Marine Park and the Cairns Marine Park, along with the addition of previously unprotected area of coastal water that adjoined the former marine parks listed above. The marine park is intended to complement the adjoining GBRMP by the use of "similar zone objectives, and entry and use provisions". It is managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.

Trade, crafts and agriculture were the region's economic foundations until the mid 19th century. Great Barrier Reef Airport , also known as Hamilton Island Airport, is a privately owned public use aerodrome and is the primary airport of the Whitsunday Islands, as well as the airport of Hamilton Island. The airport is settled on mostly reclaimed land and is commercially served year-round by Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Qantas and QantasLink. Hamilton Island Airport handles flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns and is also the airport launch pad for scenic flights to the Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach. Private flights and charters also fly into Great Barrier Reef Airport, along with locally operated helicopters, light planes and seaplanes.

The Earl of Douglas and his brother John Douglas of Balvenie made their way to the west of Scotland with Edward IV's proposals. The highland lords gave their assent from Ardtornish Castle on 19 October 1461, and sent Ranald of the Isles and Duncan, Archdeacon of the Isles, as their envoys to London. The articles were finalised and sealed at Westminster Palace on 13 February 1462 and signed by Edward IV on 17 March 1462. John, Earl of Ross, Donald Balagh, and his son and heir John, with all the people of Ross and the Isles would become subjects of Edward IV on Whitsunday.

The private system encompasses six and a half primary schools, Beaconsfield State School, Eimeo Road State School, Bucasia State School, Whitsunday Anglican School, Andergrove State School and secondary college, two P-12 colleges, one P-10 college, one 7–10 college and St Patrick's College – the state's only 11–12 college. The Wiri's tribal lands spread over some from the Coast Range east of the coastal area around Mackay and running inland as far as Nebo and the headwaters of the Bowen and Suttor rivers. They took in both the Connor and Denham ranges. Wiri territory was basically rainscrub, with drier country on its western flank. A Traditional Owner Reference Group consisting of representatives of the Yuwibara, Koinmerburra, Barada Barna, Wiri, Ngaro, and those Gia and Juru people whose lands are within Reef Catchments Mackay Whitsunday Isaac (MWI) region, helps to support natural resource management and look after the cultural heritage sites in the area.

During Hamilton Island Race Week, Hamilton Island hosts a large number of social events for men and women of all ages. The most famous event is the Whitehaven Beach Party where boats from all over the Whitsunday region converge on the white sands of Whitehaven beach to drink, eat, and dance to celebrate the end of race week. Other major events include the Wild Oats Wine Ladies lunch, the Paspaley luncheon and dinner, the Piper Heidsieck Champagne lunch, the Surf and Turf Dinner and more. Hamilton Island Race Week is also filled with other activities such as food markets, fashion events, cocktail parties and beach yoga.

To improve the relationship among themselves and to have fun together the club sent regularly a fun team to the Whitsunday dragon boat races in Hanover. After winning several times the fun team titles some sportsmen decided to do dragon boat racing seriously and to join the canoe club HKC. So initially were handball players, judo fighters, rugby players, water polo players, dancers, swimmers, dart players and also some paddlers in the boat of the All Sports Team. The ambition in combination with the sportive talent of the outsiders together with the know-how of the canoe top sports men were the basis for the ongoing success of the All Sports Team.

The name derived from the former town of Airlie and unbounded locality of Airlie Beach. Airlie was named following a request by the Lands Department in December 1935 for the Proserpine Shire Council to provide a name for a new sub-division on the coast. It is almost certain that the town was named for the parish of Airlie, in Scotland, as the name was suggested by the chairman of the former Proserpine Shire Council, Robert Shepherd, who was born in nearby Montrose, Scotland. The official name was Airlie from 1936 until 1987, when it was amalgamated into the larger town of Whitsunday while Airlie Beach became the official name of the locality.

According to Wesley’s diaries, on 10 May 1738 (Whitsunday), Wesley heard Heylyn "preach a truly Christian sermon on 'They were all filled with the Holy Ghost'--and so, said he, may all of you be." In 1739 Wesley heard Heylyn give a sermon on feigned and hypocritical repentance, and as a result, declared that he (Wesley) had been a hypocrite for twenty years. Heylyn’s “Theological Lectures” was used as a source in Wesley's compilation of the Explanatory Notes on the New Testament.

The band had its genesis in 1980 while Tad Campbell was travelling in Australia, when he encountered an advertisement for a local band looking for a guitarist. He joined the band, which spent several months as the house band at a resort in the Whitsunday Islands, during which time they were also joined by new vocalist Donna McConville, who would also become Campbell's girlfriend. They later moved to Townsville, where they recorded early demos of several songs that would eventually end up on the band's first two albums. Campbell eventually returned to Canada with McConville, putting together a new lineup since most of the original Australian members had not moved with them.

Thomas Cranmer (1489–1556), editor and co-author of the first and second Books of Common Prayer Only after the death of Henry VIII and the accession of Edward VI in 1547 could revision proceed faster. Despite conservative opposition, Parliament passed the Act of Uniformity on 21 January 1549, and the newly authorised Book of Common Prayer was required to be in use by Whitsunday, 9 June. Cranmer is "credited [with] the overall job of editorship and the overarching structure of the book"; though, he borrowed and adapted material from other sources. The prayer book had provisions for the daily offices, scripture readings for Sundays and holy days, and services for communion, public baptism, confirmation, matrimony, visitation of the sick, burial, purification of women and Ash Wednesday.

As in the West, the Byzantine liturgical year consists of two overlaying cycles with their respective series of feasts. First it is the Easter cycle (ciclu pascal) of the moveable feasts and second the monthly cycle (ciclu sanctoral) of the fixed feasts. In the Byzantine rite, the offices of the monthly cycle for fixed feasts are gathered in twelve books, one for every month, all together named Menaion. The Easter cycle is centred on the variable date of the commemoration of the Christ's Passion and is divided in three periods: the pre-paschal (10 weeks before Resurrection day), the paschal (8 weeks, from the Resurrection day to Whitsunday), and the post-paschal (variable number of weeks in between the other two periods).

Mackay is well situated to become a major service centre for the marine industry, being in immediate proximity to the Whitsundays, and located halfway between Brisbane and Cairns. Currently the Mackay Marina is the largest base in the district for the maintenance, refit and related services for all marine craft, particularly Super Yachts. The Mackay Whitsunday Super Yacht Cluster, a group of regional companies focusing on providing integrated repair, refit and provisioning for the increasing number of visiting super yachts, was established in 2001 to support and promote the development of this sector.

In February and March, HMAS Australia served as part of the escort for the Royal Yacht Gothic during the Australian leg of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation tour. The cruiser was presented with the Gloucester Cup on 25 March as the ship "considered to be foremost in general efficiency, cleanliness, seamanship and technical training" during the year of 1953. As one of the ship's final duties with the Navy, Australia was tasked with transporting Field Marshal Sir William Slim, the Governor-General of Australia, along with his wife and their staff on a cruise around the Coral Sea, the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Passage. The voyage embarked on 4 May, and two days later Australia fired its 8-inch guns for the final time.

In Eastern Christianity, Pentecost can also refer to the entire fifty days of Easter through Pentecost inclusive; hence the book containing the liturgical texts is called the "Pentecostarion".

The Ordo Romanus fixed the spring fast in the first week of March (then the first month), thus loosely associated with the first Sunday in Lent; the summer fast in the second week of June, after Whitsunday; the autumnal fast in the third week of September following the Exaltation of the Cross, September 14; and the winter fast in the complete week next before Christmas Eve, following St. Lucy's Day (Dec. 13). These dates are given in the following Latin mnemonic: Or in an old English rhyme: "Lenty, Penty, Crucy, Lucy" is a shorter mnemonic for when they fall. The ember days began on the Wednesday immediately following those days. This meant, for instance, that if September 14 were a Tuesday, the ember days would occur on September 15, 17, and 18.

George Miller directed some sequences himself, including one where Sam Neill's character is tormented in the boat by a shark.

She was involved in a number of disturbances reported around her Rose Street address in Edinburgh. William Creech, a bookseller, publisher and local magistrate, then assisted her neighbours in bringing these complaints to the courts. The complaint was "since Whitsunday last, she and a Miss Sally Sanderson, who were persons of bad character, had kept a very irregular and disorderly house, into which they admit and entertain licentious and profligate persons of both sexes to the great annoyance of their neighbours and breach of the public peace...". These disturbances lead to her being brought before the magistrates where she was sentenced to banishment from the city with the charge of being 'drummed through the streets' and 'confinement in the house of corrections for 6 months' if she returned to Edinburgh.

The right jamb is in its turn identified with the Pentecostarion period by another 5 lateral rosettes hinting at the Pentecost or the period of 50 days after the Passover. The lintel in between naturally represents the Triodion period and needed no distinctive signs. Once the three parts of the portal are identified with the three periods of the Easter cycle, the expected significance of the triple crosses in the middle fields should be the main feasts commemorating the life and the activity of the Christ. Thus, the triple cross at the left corresponds to Christ's Nativity and baptism, the one in the middle above the entrance commemorates Christ's Passion and the third one at the right is a symbol of Christ's Resurrection and Ascension and nevertheless of the descent of the Holy Ghost or the Whitsunday.

However, the Strikers lost in a Grand Final once again, going down 1–4 in a boilover result to Redlands United FC, who had finished the season in fourth position on the QSL ladder. The 2010 and 2011 campaigns took on a familiar path. With David Large taking on the coaching role from the departing McLaren, the club finished both seasons in second position on the league table before going on to host the Grand Finals and losing each one by an identical scoreline, 1–0 to Sunshine Coast FC. The 2012 QSL proved to be a successful season for the club. The Strikers claimed their second QSL championship in five years in emphatic fashion, finishing eight points above second place Far North Queensland Bulls FC. The Strikers were eliminated in a home semi-final 2–0 to Whitsunday Miners FC.

Bastock, Australia's Ships of War, p. 305 The ship then departed on a training cruise to northern Queensland, during which five personnel drowned in the Whitsunday Islands.Frame, Where Fate Calls, p. 37 Over several days, groups of trainee officers and sailors had been ordered to take one of the ship's whaleboats on a twelve-hour voyage around Hayman and Hooke Islands; out of the sight of both the carrier and her escort, the destroyer . The third group boat left Sydney at around 0500 hours on 17 October with a midshipman and four trainee sailors aboard, and was believed to have capsized four to five hours later. Despite poor weather, Sydneys captain had declined an offer by Anzacs captain for the destroyer to move to the north of Hayman Island in case of incident, and a search party was not sent until after the boat failed to return at 1900 hours.

In the Cumberland Islands, sub-Inspector George Nowlan led his troopers in a dispersal against the Ngaro people living on Whitsunday Island after they hijacked and burnt the Louisa Maria schooner. The Ngaro who survived fled in canoes to the mainland near Mackay and were further pursued by Sgt Graham and his troopers. Further north at Somerset on the tip of the Cape York Peninsula, officer Frank Jardine, who had previously murdered many Aboriginal people as a drover, led his troopers in massacres against the mainland Yadhaykenu people and the Kaurareg people of the Torres Strait after the crew of a ship were murdered by other people. In 1875, sub-Inspector H.M. Chester even managed to lead his troops in a number of pillaging raids of native villages along the Fly River as part of Luigi D'Albertis' journey to the uncolonised southern New Guinea region.

The following year he joined the student fraternity Fraternitas Latviensis, which helps develop his two loves: poetry, through its reading evenings; and politics, in which he starts writing on in published articles by criticising the speeches of the Latvia politicians. On January 24, 1929, along with Alfred Valdmanis and Ilona Leimane, Breikšs joined the Council of the Academic section of the National Union, a right-wing nationalist party with strong antisemitic views, led by Arveds Bergs. At the time of his confirmation on Whitsunday of 1928 (an experience to which he would return many times in his poetry), his parents had by this time moved to a farm in Lower Kurzeme near Auce, situated next to Lake Kreklini, an extension of Lake Ezerupe. It was from his time on the farm, walking through and picking apples from the orchard, that he wrote the poem "My motherland".

Despite assertions, notably by Alfred Cort Haddon, that outrigger technology never reached further down the east Queensland coast that 300 miles north of Whitsunday Islands, the entries in Captain James Cook's Endeavour journals prove that by 1770, the first contact date with Europeans, outriggers were already employed in this area. On these the Ngaro made their journeys and fishing expeditions, sailing not only about the islands in their immediate area but covering an estimated 100 kilometres in and along the reefs, including those between St.Bees and Hayman Island, reefs which they knew intimately. Ngaro oral accounts are consistent throughout the historical record in their description of seasonal visits to the Great Barrier Reef, 43 miles from the mainland and 25 miles from the nearest island, in their canoes. Their diet consisted of sea turtles, flying foxes, fowls, wild cherries, Burdekin plum, damson berries, trochus shells, baler shells, green ant and cockatoo apples.
