As meteorologist Dan Satterfield points out over at AGU, the dew point, or temperature below which water vapor can condense, has been extremely high along the east coast recently, owing to the enormous amount of heat being stored in the ocean (for which our dearly departed record-breaking El Niño is partially to thank).
In the case of Hurricane Harvey, these include the warm ocean that provided energy for the storm; the elevated sea level on top of which the storm surge occurred; the atmospheric pressure pattern that contributed to the storm's stalling over the coast; and the atmospheric water vapor that provided moisture for the record-setting precipitation.
On the other hand, global cooling appears to be caused by large explosive volcanoes that eject water vapor and sulfur dioxide into the lower stratosphere forming a sulfuric acid aerosol or mist that reflects and scatters sunlight, cooling Earth 2628 degrees for two to four years, but lowering ocean temperatures for nearly a century.
In the new Astrophysical Journal Letters paper, researchers led by William B. Sparks of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore report on a Hubble Space Telescope observation in 2016 that revealed a likely plume of water vapor rising from the same spot on Europa where the researchers saw a similar plume two years earlier.
"We essentially found that using e-cigarettes is not equivalent to inhaling water vapor; in fact, it can exert acute, detrimental effects on (blood vessels) even when the liquid does not contain nicotine," Dr. Alessandra Caporale of the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia, the study's first author, told Reuters Health in an email.
How they did it: Elfatih Eltahir and co-author Suchil Kang of the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology focused on wet bulb temperatures — measures of the amount of water vapor in the air that are taken by wrapping a wet cloth around the bulb (or sensor) of a thermometer, to let evaporation of water cool the bulb.
Zou, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the Masdar Institute, part of Khalifa University of Science and Technology, discussed how her experiments mimic and enhance what naturally occurs in rain clouds: Clouds need naturally-occurring nuclei such as dust or pollen to condense the water vapor into droplets, which eventually grow large enough to fall as rain.
The solar system is filled with all kinds of intriguing moons and dwarf planets that don't get attention because they don't match the official definition used by the International Astronomical Union, which stipulates that a planet: Among the objects that don't fit this are Enceladus, a moon of Saturn that spits off huge plumes of water vapor into space.
I've been talking about these since my days as a scientist at NASA, because there are studies that show that when you have these hot towers, they're more likely to indicate that the storm will go through a rapid intensification phase because they're releasing so much heat that all that water vapor is condensing into cloud water in the storm.
Some employees once vaped in the VICE office, which I found distasteful (it has since been banned on the premises); in college I knew a guy who got an e-cigarette and would insist on using it indoors, constantly, saying it was "just water vapor" and bragging about how he'd taken it on a plane and hadn't been kicked off.
