In 1934, the Nation of Islam published its first newspaper, Final Call to Islam, to educate and build membership. Children of its members attended classes at the newly created Muhammad University of Islam, but this soon led to challenges by boards of education in Detroit and Chicago, which considered the children truants from the public school system. In the original act, Robin's prospective girlfriend, Jamika, asks him to take her and her son to a Disneyland-type amusement park, but when he agrees she shows up with four kids, three of whom are the neglected children of her friend, Bébé, whom Jamika refuses to judge. Bébé's kids are misbehaved truants and violent troublemakers, over whom Jamika does not attempt to exercise any control. They terrorize park staff, cut off Donald Duck's feet to use for swimming, try to steal Robin's 8-track/radio while he's listening to it, and make a general menace of themselves, literally destroying the park. Initially, participants in TIP were first-time truants referred to the program as a result of a referral from the Fulton County Juvenile Court, but now, every child who is referred to the court for truancy is paired with a TIP volunteer. Since 2001, TIP has also served children at the school level through its Early Intervention initiative, pairing children and families with volunteers to assist in rectifying the attendance issues before a court referral becomes necessary. Providing children at risk of school failure with volunteer advocates increases their exposure to many social services and other resources, increasing their opportunity for success. Along with preventing school failure, these efforts combat the consequences that go along with it as well.

George McCredie's photographic records of The Rocks cleansing is an invaluable state significant historical resource. George McCredie and his company A.L. & G. McCredie & Sons, Architects and Consulting Engineers, were responsible or associated with the construction of many of Sydney's prominent buildings such as George Patterson House, the Burns Phillip Building, Mark Foys, and many of the former wharves in Darling Harbour. The firm was also responsible for the laying of the first underground telephone lines through tunnels beneath Sydney's streets and pavements. Linnwood and the associated buildings on the site are significant for their association with the large number of state wards and truants that resided, and were schooled there, between the years of 1917 and 1999, notably the gangster Chow Hayes.

Jack Clement Badcock was an English historian, naturalist, columnist, writer and painter who lived in the village of Fleckney, Leicestershire. For many years Badcock wrote a regular naturalist column for the Leicester Mercury newspaper and also produced a number of books on the subject, including 'In the Countryside of South Leicestershire' (1972) and "A Countryman's Calendar" (1973). Badcock was also the first person to write a history of the village of Fleckney in 1951, and also wrote a fictional trilogy of books with a rustic theme entitled, 'The Truants' (1953), 'Waybent' (1954') and 'The Four-Acre' (1967). In recent times, Badcock has been commemorated in his native village, with the naming of 'Badcock Way', at the entrance to the Saddington Grange Estate, on Saddington Road.

San Francisco's school chief, Carlos Garcia, said the path from truancy to prosecution was lengthy, and that the school district usually spends months encouraging parents through phone calls, reminder letters, private meetings, hearings before the School Attendance Review Board, and offers of help from city agencies and social services; two of the six parents entered no plea but said they would work with the D.A.'s office and social service agencies to create "parental responsibility plans" to help them start sending their children to school regularly. By April 2009, there were 1,330 elementary school students who were habitual or chronic truants, down 23 percent from 1,730 in 2008, and down from 2,517 in 2007 and from 2,856 in 2006. Harris's office prosecuted seven parents in three years, with none jailed.

In 2006, as part of an initiative to reduce the city's skyrocketing homicide rate, Harris led a city-wide effort to combat truancy for at-risk elementary school youth in San Francisco. Declaring chronic truancy a matter of public safety and pointing out that the majority of prison inmates and homicide victims are dropouts or habitual truants, Harris's office met with thousands of parents at high-risk schools and sent out letters warning all families of the legal consequences of truancy at the beginning of the fall semester, adding she would prosecute the parents of chronically truant elementary students; penalties included a $2,500 fine and up to a year in jail. The program was controversial when introduced. In 2008, Harris issued citations against six parents whose children missed at least fifty days of school, the first time San Francisco prosecuted adults for student truancy.

The Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000 is a United Kingdom Act of Parliament that advances a number of agendas related to criminal justice. It instituted the National Probation Service as well as the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service. The Act also makes the parents of persistent truants criminally liable and subject to a maximum penalty of three months in prison,Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000, §72 a legal change that led to the first imprisonment of parents in 2002. On sentencing, the Act formally removes the role of the Home Secretary in sentencing of young people for grave crimes (such as murder) following the decisions by the House of Lords in R v Secretary of State for the Home Dept ex parte Venables and Thompson (1997)[1997] All ER 97 and the subsequent case at the European Court of Human Rights, T. v United Kingdom.
