In 2014, trans activists and former contestants Carmen Carrera and Monica Beverly Hillz criticized the show's use of words such as tranny and shemale, including the main challenge announcement phrase up to season 6, "You've got she-mail", which they described as transphobic. In 2019, a former journalist from The New York Post Mandy Stadtmiller, released a video in which Apatow made some jokes which were deemed racially insensitive, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic as well as making jokes concerning victims of mass shootings. However, some claim this term in an affirming manner. Sociologist Avery Tompkins of Transylvania University in Kentucky argued in an article in the Journal of Homosexuality that a sex- positive trans politics cannot emerge if terms such as tranny chaser informed discussion of attraction to transgender people. In scientific literature, the term gynandromorphophilic is often used for men who are attracted to trans women who possess a combination of male and female physical characteristics. The term skoliosexual has been used to describe attraction to non-binary people.

The programme he hosted at Piccadilly was Timmy on the Tranny, a weekday evening show that ran from 8.00pm–11.00pm and took its name from Mallett's lunchtime and later afternoon shows on Radio Oxford. Among Mallett's team of helpers were Chris Evans (known as 'Nobby Nolevel), Andy Bird (who played the pirate radio character 'Radio Diggle') and Karen Walsh (the original 'Aunty Boney kneecaps'). This led to Mallett co-presenting the Manchester-based BBC2 youth music show Oxford Road Show for a year in 1984.

Monarchy Distribution launched their first studio "Assence Films" in February, 2012 in a partnership with Exile Distribution. Assence's first title "Anal Artists" starring Sasha Grey gained notoriety for the studio brand when Kulich offered a portion of the proceeds to the National Education Association and the donation was rejected. In March 2012, Monarchy launched 'OGEE Studios' on the heels of the success of Assence Films. In April 2012, Monarchy announced that they had signed a deal with Blue Coyote Pictures to handle the distribution for a new Transsexual line called Tranny Factory.

On January 1, 2008 at the Xcalibur Bowling Centre, a disco-themed bowling alley in Surrey, British Columbia, Egerton, the janitor, has allowed two groups of teenagers to bowl against one another after hours. The "prep", Steve, is still bitter after his best friend Jamie, the "jock", had sex with Lisa, a girl with whom Steve was smitten and even took to their senior prom. After Steve and his friends Joey, Patrick, and A.J. harass the "tranny", Sam, they are chastised by Jamie. This leads to a brawl between Steve's team and Jamie's.

Barry Bostwick and Meat Loaf, who star in the original film, appear in cameo roles in this episode. Elements of Rocky Horror were sanitized for the episode, including the costumes and lyrics. Creator Richard O'Brien expressed disappointment in the dilution of the musical's themes, and a spokesperson for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation criticized the episode for its use of the term "tranny". Watched by 11.76 million US viewers, "The Rocky Horror Glee Show" was the fifth consecutive episode of Glee to become the top-rated program on the night of broadcast in the 18–49 demographic.

This is one of the first times that a BBC series has been sold to a free-to-air broadcaster, or been shown FTA other than on the BBC itself. The shows effective "theme song" is "Out of Control" by the Chemical Brothers and Bernard Sumner, which plays through the majority of in- club sequences as well as other times in the show. However, the actual opening and closing theme is a remix of "Tinseltown in the Rain" by Scottish band The Blue Nile. Ariel Pink references "a Tinseltown Tranny" in the song "Dedicated to Bobby Jameson".

Assigned female at birth, Dove spent their early years believing they were ugly: they had a larger physique than other children and youth, and were given the nickname "Tranny Danny". Initially, Dove claimed in interviews and biographies to have studied genetic engineering and civil law at University of California, Berkeley. They also claimed to have worked as a Colorado Firefighter under a male pseudonym, and to have passed as a man during this time, for a period of eleven months. However, in late 2019 Dove admitted in a video on NBC News that both of these claims (of having studied genetics and law, and of having been a firefighter) were false.

Christopher “Christoph” Lee (September 4, 1964 – December 22, 2012) was a Chinese and Polish-American transgender activist, and award-winning filmmaker in the San Francisco Bay Area community. He was also the co-founder of Tranny Fest, now called the San Francisco Transgender Film Festival (SFTFF). In 2002 he was the first openly trans man Grand Marshal of San Francisco Pride. Lee’s death and the designation of his assigned gender at birth on his death certificate rather than his self-identified gender was the impetus behind the “Respect After Death Act” or AB 1577 Bill which was passed in California on September 26, 2014.

On March 2, 2014, Molloy was interviewed by Chicagoist concerning Piers Morgan's interview with Janet Mock and the death of Anne Vanderbilt, allegedly resulting from an article posted on Grantland. On March 18, 2014, Molloy wrote an article titled "RuPaul Stokes Anger with Use of Transphobic Slur" at The Advocate. The article and others discussing the use of the word tranny sparked a conversation about its use by RuPaul and others. Molloy was criticized by prominent transgender activists Calpernia Addams, Justin Vivian Bond, Andrea James, Our Lady J, as well as drag artists RuPaul and Alaska, a former contestant on RuPaul's Drag Race, who made a parody video depicting Molloy being shot in the head.

CTX received a "Tranny" award from the California Transportation Foundation as the Program of the Year for 2004. During the same ceremony, Speier was honored as the Legislator of the Year. In 2017, the Rail and the California Economy report noted that Baby Bullet trains operated at 95% on-time performance (making stops within ten minutes of scheduled times) and, at around 60 minutes from San Francisco to San Jose, was faster than driving south on U.S. 101 during key commute hours.

In January 2017, the Daily Telegraph published an article concerning a transgender woman subsequently convicted of a violent axe attack in a Sydney suburb. Although her transgender status was irrelevant to the incident at the time, The Daily Telegraph used derogatory slurs and made repeated references to the attacker's history of sex reassignment surgery, calling the woman a "tranny" who "had chopped herself". The following week, SBS published an article expressing concern about how journalists "appear to enjoy treating transgender people as the punchline to a joke," singling out the Daily Telegraph's journalist. In September 2018, the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal considered whether the article constituted unlawful vilification through its "gratuitous references to", and "ridicule of" the woman's transgender status.

On the second day he beat up a transgender woman named Emily Gorcenski with a modified version of the Confederate flag which incorporated the neo-Nazi Schwarze Sonne (Black Sun) symbol in the center, even bragging about the beating in private chats in which he said "So to sum it up what I did Friday, dropped kicked that tranny that made video crying", "Today cracked 3 skulls open with virtually no damage to myself", and "I drop kicked Emily gorcenski".

In June 2020, Barr successfully led a campaign to have Baroness Emma Nicholson removed as honorary vice president of the Booker Prize, a prestigious annual prize awarded to the best English novel. This was in response to Nicholson, a peer in the House of Lords, saying that she had voted against same-sex marriage in 2013 because she believed “it would lead to degrading the status of women and of girls”, a statement Barr called "homophobic". Nicholson was subsequently removed from her position by the Booker Prize in late June 2020. Barr was accused of hypocrisy when it emerged approximately a week later that he had used offensive language toward transgender people and women on Twitter in the past. In April 2009 he wrote: “Tittering sickly @ story of 6’5” tranny who failed to hang herself from 5 ft balcony this wknd.

It was scheduled to screen in the OUTer Limits section of the 2007 Frameline Film Festival, along with other futuristic and experimental films, (via issuu) but it was pulled from the program after several members and supporters of the transgender community criticized it as "transphobic" and took issue with its being included in the festival. Frameline yielded to an online petition published by the website Left on SF that described The Gendercator as a "hateful movie". Protesters complained about the use of the word "tranny" in the dialogue; they also objected to the director's statement in which Crouch spoke against body modification as a solution for all gender dissonance. Crouch was invited to screen her film in San Francisco in the fall of 2007 by Ondine Kilker, co-chair of community initiative Center Women Present (CWP).

Additionally, he has been interviewed by the CBC on Bill C-16 which introduced a Canadian law that added gender expression and gender identity as protected grounds to the Canadian Human Rights Act. In April 2017, Silveira published a piece on SamaritanMag titled "Q&A;: the Cliks’ Lucas Silveira interviews Fellow Transgender Rock Singer Laura Jane Grace". In the article, he interviews Grace on her experience publicly coming out, transitioning, and Grace's book, Tranny: Confessions Of Punk Rock’s Most Infamous Anarchist Sell Out, and band, Against Me!.

On the second day of the rally, he assaulted Emily Gorcenski, a transgender woman, with a modified version of the Confederate flag that incorporated the neo-Nazi Black Sun symbol in its center, and he even bragged about the beating in private chats under the alias of "VasillistheGreek": "So to sum it up what I did Friday, dropped kicked that tranny that made video crying", "Today cracked 3 skulls open with virtually no damage to myself", and "I drop kicked Emily Gorcenski". Pistolis was also part of a gang of neo-Nazis that assaulted an interracial couple at a restaurant in a suburb of Nashville, Tennessee. Pistolis had promoted the Unite the Right rally on Twitter and posted an image of a car running over a left-winger with the caption "Good Night, Left Side".
