Marre aimed to portray the life of two adolescent kathoeys living in rural Thailand, as they strove to land a job at a cabaret revue in Pattaya. The German-Swedish band Lindemann wrote the song "Ladyboy", on their first studio album Skills in Pills, about a man's preference for kathoeys. In the TV series I'm Alan Partridge, the protagonist regularly mentions ladyboys, seemingly expressing a sexual interest in them.
