Her style evolved from realism through the synthetic simplifications, expressive and metaphoric deformation, to abstraction. She was also a painter, drawer and poet. Awarded for achievements in arts by Solidarność (1984, 1989), awarded the Prize of Brat Albert Chmielowski (1986) and Prize of Polcul Foundation (1991).

Janet Adeyemi was born to Chief Ebenezer Akinboboye Adepoju and High Chief (Princess) Florence Motinola Adepoju, famously known by her title as Yagbata of Ile oluji, Ondo State. Her father, Chief Adepoju was a diligent civil servant that supervised the execution of part of the major road that connects around Ile Oluji. The contractors and the people regarded him as a Man of Integrity as he shunned all appearance of materialism. Her mother, High Chief Adepoju, was a successful tradeswoman who came from a very impoverished background and became one of the wealthiest merchants in her town.

The Governor of Suriname requested the Minister of the Colonies that for future cases "no deportees from the Coast of Guinea be sent to his colony, as they refused to work and had to be supported at the cost of the colony." In February 1859, the Governor reported that Gyapiaba had been earning a living as a tradeswoman for a long time and that she was not supported by the government any longer. She joined the urban guerrilla and took part in armed actions and revolutionary propaganda.
