In a general sense of the rule, the French and German characters could understand each other when speaking, despite them sticking to their accents, but the English characters could not understand these characters without someone translating for them and vice versa. Because of this plot device, each particular main language for the show required a specific accent and speaking style to be devised. The Snaptun Stone may feature a depiction of Loki In 1950, a semi-circular flat stone featuring a depiction of a mustachioed face was discovered on a beach near Snaptun, Denmark. Made of soapstone that originated in Norway or Sweden, the depiction was carved around the year 1000 CE and features a face with scarred lips. The figure is identified as Loki due to his lips, considered a reference to a tale recorded in Skáldskaparmál where sons of Ivaldi stitch up Loki's lips. The stone is identified as a hearth stone; the nozzle of the bellows would be inserted into the hole in the front of the stone, and the air produced by the bellows pushed flame through the top hole, all the while the bellows were protected from the heat and flame.

For example, a bamboo tally with the text "串錢壹仟文" (Chuàn qián yīqiān wén, "a string of 1000 cash coins") could contain the additional information that it if were to be redeemed that it would be paid out in Daqian (大錢) of "10 cash" coins. This bamboo tally would then be paid out in a string of 100 Daqian of 10 wén. Below their denominations many bamboo tallies had the Chinese characters xin hao (信號, "warranty mark") to indicate that the bamboo tally is trustworthy to be worth its stated (nominal) value. Another way to indicate what type of cash coins would be paid out is if the bamboo tally did or didn't contain the inscription 10 wén (十文) below its top hole.
