It was at this point that he ceased pursuing a career in heavyweight professional boxing, although, "getting punched in the face," was, he has claimed, "very good preparation for being a writer." His second play London Calling, which took its name from a song by the Clash, was combined with Dealt With for the double bill Thick As Thieves, produced at the Theatre Royal Stratford East's The Square Thing studio theatre in 1981.

In 1991 she also starred in the title role in a touring production of Willy Russell's play Shirley Valentine. To get round such limitations and develop their characters, Clement and La Frenais allowed individual plot threads in "Thick As Thieves" to cross between successive episodes, meaning the series must be run in its serial-like series running order for some of the plotlines to make sense. The series (produced by Derrick Goodwin) was moderately successful, however makers LWT declined a second series. Writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais found themselves suddenly offered a new series by the BBC, the writers' "Prisoner And Escort" segment of Barker's "Seven of One" series having impressed the BBC enough have it developed into a full series that followed the fortunes of Fletcher and his fellow inmates. Again starring Ronnie Barker, it became the much-loved claustrophobic prison-based series Porridge.

In contrast to its pop-oriented predecessor, Setting Sons features a much harder, tougher production, albeit with the emphasis on melody common throughout The Jam's discography. Arguably, this is the Jam's most thematically ambitious LP. Singer, guitarist and songwriter Paul Weller originally conceived Setting Sons as a concept album detailing the lives of three boyhood friends who later reunite as adults after an unspecified war, only to discover they have grown both up and apart.The New Rolling Stone Album Guide p. 416 This concept was never fully developed and it remains unclear which tracks were originally intended as part of the story, although it is commonly agreed that "Thick As Thieves", "Little Boy Soldiers", "Wasteland" and "Burning Sky" are likely constituents; extant Jam bootlegs feature a version of "Little Boy Soldiers" split into three separate recordings, possible evidence that the song was intended to serve as a recurring motif, with separate sections appearing between other songs on the album.

Around the same time he co-wrote "Tune Into My Heart" on Little Boots' début album Hands, carried out additional production on Goldfrapp's fifth album, Head First, and co-wrote and produced three tracks on Marina and the Diamonds 2010 album The Family Jewels, and the song "Can't Beat the Feeling" on Kylie Minogue's 2010 UK number one Aphrodite album. He co-wrote several tracks with Will Young for his 2011 UK number one album Echoes, including the single "Losing Myself", recorded in his studios in London and France, and co-wrote the single "The Apple" with VV Brown. After writing several tracks with The Temper Trap for their Thick as Thieves album in 2015, he produced Australian songstress Emma Louise's 2016 album Supercry.

Rebecca and Megan Lovell began their musical careers in 2005 as teenagers with the formation of a bluegrass/Americana group, the Lovell Sisters, with their older sister, Jessica Lovell. After self-releasing two independent albums and touring successfully for four years – appearing on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, the Grand Ole Opry, and performing at Bonnaroo Music Festival – the Lovell Sisters announced the group's disbandment in December 2009. In January 2010, Rebecca and Megan regrouped as Larkin Poe.. "Larkin Poe" was the name of the sisters' great- great-great-grandfather.. Over the course of 3 years (2010–2013), Larkin Poe self-released 5 independent EPs, 2 collaboration albums, and a live performance DVD. Spring EP (2010), Summer EP (2010), Fall EP (2010), Winter EP (2010), Thick as Thieves EP (2011), The Sound of the Ocean Sound a collaboration with Thom Hell (2013), Killing Time EP a collaboration with Blair Dunlop (2013). In late 2013, Larkin Poe signed a record deal with RH Music, the music division of San Francisco-based company Restoration Hardware.
