Böde and Rebrov had a very unsteady relationship throughout the year, as Rebrov saw many other strikers as the target man for the club. In an interview with M4 Sport, Böde admitted discomfort as he said, “The club wants to sign a new foreign striker every year, but at the end, I always play.” Ferencváros ended up becoming the Hungarian Champions that season. During an interview at the Ferencváros Celebration Parade, when he was asked about his future with the club, he said, “I really have not enjoyed coming to training after crying because of my lack of action.
Though only and barely , he emerged as a talented striker, helping to define the modern role of target man. Signed by Jack Smith, he was soon converted from a wide player into a centre-forward. Allen also benefited from the ultra-modern training techniques of Jesse Carver, who served Albion as manager for a brief time in the 1952–53 campaign. Carver's successor, Vic Buckingham, also had a Total Football philosophy, and appreciated the technical skill Allen possessed, allowing him to play as a deep-lying attacker with room to dribble at will – a revolutionary position and tactic.
Tyrone Barnett (born 28 October 1985) is an English professional footballer who plays as a forward for National League side Eastleigh. A former West Bromwich Albion youth team player, the self-described 'athletic target man' dropped into non-league football with Rushall Olympic, AFC Telford United, Willenhall Town, and Hednesford Town. He won the Birmingham Senior Cup with Hednesford, before his goal scoring record won him a move to Football League club Macclesfield Town in May 2010. He was voted the club's Player of the Year for 2010–11, and won a move to Crawley Town in June 2011.
Dundee United at this time were developing into one of the strongest sides in Scotland. Despite playing in some of the earlier rounds, Dodds missed out on the Scottish League Cup final in 1979 when the club lifted their first ever major trophy, but the following year he was part of the side that defeated city rivals Dundee in the final to retain the cup. He scored United's first goal in a 3–0 victory at Dundee's Dens Park ground. By this time Dodds was featuring regularly in the side and forming a profitable attacking partnership, as a 'target man' alongside the diminutive Paul Sturrock.
Tom Spillane and Ger Lynch — assigned to mark Tommy Conroy and Barney Rock — began their efforts during the national anthem, which they sang with aplomb. Spillane, quoted in the book Princes of Pigskin, said of this tactic later: "There was no belting but the plot was to sing the National Anthem as loud as we could into their ears to put the fear of God into them. Neither of us were great singers but they must have thought we were wired to the moon". The headline in the printed edition read: "From twin tower to supersub target man, Walsh is key to Kingdom dream".
He sold 2001–02 top-scorer Michael Ricketts to Middlesbrough for £3.5 million, bringing in Pierre-Yves André on loan as his replacement. Bolton struggled all season, but managed to avoid relegation with a final day win over Middlesbrough. Looking to avoid another relegation battle, Allardyce made a number of signings in preparation for the 2003–04 season, the most significant of which were Brazilian defender Emerson Thome, Greece international Stelios Giannakopoulos, and target-man striker Kevin Davies. Allardyce's side finished eighth in the league and reached the League Cup final, in what was his first major domestic final appearance as a player or manager.
As instructed by the manager, Kyrgiakos has recently been played up front as a target man at times when Liverpool has been down in the final minutes and has needed a goal. He also scored an important goal against Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League in a 2–1 win at Anfield on 24 October 2010 to end Liverpool's run of six games without a win. In June 2011, it was announced that Kyrgiakos would get a 12-month contract extension at Anfield after his initial two-year contract expired. After 49 appearances and three goals for the Reds, Kyrgiakos left the club for Bundesliga side Wolfsburg on 22 August 2011.
In 2005, he played for the Chicago Fire Reserves of the MLS scoring two goals in five games and was signed by the Chicago Fire for the remainder of the 2005 season. Later in 2005, the Chicago Storm re-acquired Rosenband in a trade with the California Cougars that sent John Ball and the rights to Kevin Sakuda to California for target man Anthony Maher and the rights to Rosenband. He re- signed with the Storm on March 14, 2006, and played eight games scoring two goals and one assist. Following the conclusion of the season, Rosenband signed a contract extension through the 2008–09 season.
Other creative players who play further back, such as Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho and Zinedine Zidane, and Bruno Fernandes are often instead described as the "number 10", and usually operate as an attacking midfielder or advanced playmaker."The Question: What is a playmaker's role in the modern game?". The Guardian. Retrieved 27 December 2019 The second striker position is a loosely defined and most often misunderstood description of a player positioned in a free role, somewhere between the out-and-out striker, whether he or she is a "target man" or more of a "poacher", and the number 10 or attacking midfielder, while possibly showing some of the characteristics of both.
Samir Nasri, who has been deployed in this role, once described it as that of a "non-axial playmaker." On occasion, the role of an offensive winger can also be occupied by a different type of player. For example, certain managers have been known to use a "wide target man" on the wing, namely a large and physical player who usually plays as a centre-forward, and who will attempt to win aerial challenges and hold up the ball on the flank, or drag full-backs out of position. Jostein Flo epitomizes this role so much so that a tactic was named after him – Flo Pass.
He scored 15 goals in 24 league games in 1933–34, as the Terriers finished as runners-up, three points behind Arsenal. After just six goalless appearances in the 1934–35 campaign, he left Yorkshire to join Newcastle United, who had just recently lost their top-flight status. He was one of manager Tom Mather's first signings. Smith scored 16 goals to finish as the club's top scorer, though they finished ten points short of Bolton Wanderers in the promotion places. Smith continued to be the Magpies' main target man in 1935–36, scoring 26 goals, though Newcastle again finished with 46 points, this time nine points behind second placed Charlton Athletic.
AIK were only defeated three times this year (two of them against local rivals Hammarby) and were in the running for the title with one game left. In their last game, however, leaders Elfsborg defeated Djurgården and secured the title, one point ahead of runners-up AIK. AIK brought in a couple of Argentine players for the 2007 season, including Iván Obolo, an elegant target man and secondary striker who during his three seasons at the club scored 24 goals in 74 appearances. The season looked promising after a six-win streak in the second half of the season, but then the club sold the internal golden-boot winner of 2006, Wílton Figueiredo, to the Qatari side Al-Rayyan.
During this period, Ipswich finished third in the First Division, with Mariner contributing ten goals from 28 games. Mariner's third England cap came in the return World Cup qualifier in Luxembourg, scoring a last-minute goal in a 2–0 win which England really needed to win by much more in order to give themselves half a chance of qualifying for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. By now, Mariner had become one of a number of 'target man'-type centre forwards for England coach Ron Greenwood to select from, with Stuart Pearson and Bob Latchford also on the scene. It was Mariner, however, who would be selected the majority of the time.
Muir was signed to Tranmere Rovers by player-manager, Frank Worthington, who was his striking partner in his first season at the club. Despite his evident promise, he spent his early career at Rovers immersed in struggle, as the club languished in the basement of the league and Muir was part of the side that beat Exeter City 1–0 to save Rovers from automatic relegation from Division Four in 1987. He set up the crucial goal, headed in by Gary Williams in the 77th minute of the last game of that season. Muir prospered when new manager, John King, signed a big target-man, Jim Steel, as his strike partner in late 1987.
Himself and Ger Lynch — assigned to mark Tommy Conroy and Barney Rock during the 1984 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final — began their efforts during the national anthem, which they sang with aplomb.
On 30 January 2014, Sunderland completed the transfer of Scocco for €3.65 million, signing a two- and-a-half-year deal, as one of Gus Poyet's four transfer window signings. Asked about Scocco in April, South American football expert Tim Vickery wrote in his weekly BBC Sport column: "He might not be a big target man centre- forward, but he has some penalty area presence and moves outside the area with fluidity and intelligence." Although Sunderland avoided relegation the one-cap Argentina international failed to score in eight appearances, all of which came from the bench. He was an unused substitute as the side lost the 2014 Football League Cup Final 3-1 to Manchester City on 2 March.
Sunderland's manager Peter Reid had been under-fire throughout pre-season for his failure to buy a big-name striker as a long-term replacement for the ageing Niall Quinn. The relatively high price-tag for a player who was struggling in Scotland, and the late hour of his signing led many fans, and pundits including legend Jimmy Montgomery to believe that Flo was a deadline-day panic buy. Once again he scored in his debut match, a 1–1 draw with Manchester United. It was clear by Sunderland's tactics that Reid expected Flo to slot into the role of veteran Niall Quinn (who retired from playing in November) as a tall target-man for long-balls.
In 2007, coeur de lion published Rynemonn by Terry Dowling. Rynemonn was the final collection of Tom Rynosseros stories, concluding this popular saga begun in Rynosseros (first published by Aphelion Publications, an independent Australian publisher, in 1990, and reprinted by Mirrodanse Books in 2003) and continued in Blue Tyson (Aphelion Publications 1992), and Twilight Beach (Aphelion Publications 1993). Rynemonn contained a number of stories published previously in magazines and the final triptych of Tom stories which first appeared in the Forever Shores collection edited by Peter McNamara and Margret Winch (Wakefield Press 2003). Rynemonn also contained four previously unpublished Tom stories, the linking narrative 'Doing the Line' and 'Swordplay', 'Tesserina and The Target Man' and 'The Bull of September'.
A powerful and tenacious yet slow striker, Jancker was physically very large for a footballer, standing at . His height and strength proved to be an advantage when playing as a target man, as displayed during his most successful days at FC Bayern Munich. Jancker was known for being an unusual center forward, being weak in the air despite his huge frame, but showing a surprising control of the ball, especially featuring a polished back-to-the-goal game, good link-up play, and a touch for scoring with his hard right-footed shot – always doing the most intelligent and simple things on the field, courtesy of his awareness. He also struggled with injuries throughout his career.

Gargan was signed by Sutton United manager Paul Doswell in the summer of 2009, along with his former colleague Sonny Cobbs. Gargan established himself as a first team regular, often playing as the sole target man following the departure of Sutton striker Stefan Payne to Fulham. He scored seventeen goals in 46 games over all competitions, as his club came second in the league before losing in the play-offs to Kingstonian. United believed they had lost the player as he went missing after the match, but this appeared not to be the case after Gargan revealed he had been with family in Spain and was unaware of the club's attempts to contact him.
McPherson's height (6 ft 3) ensured he was a commanding presence defensively, as well as a potent attacking weapon, both as a goalscoring threat and a target man for flick-ons. Known as 'Slim', he saw himself as a ball-playing defender and was an admirer of the Dutch player Ruud Krol as a child. Despite his stature he was also quite an adept dribbler, and his sporadic runs from defence were renowned, particularly when playing as part of a three-man central defence with Hearts. These runs were used to devastating effect in some big matches for Hearts, such as the 3–1 victory over Celtic in November 1991, and the 4–2 victory over Rangers during the Scottish Cup tie at Tynecastle in February 1995.
Manager Jimmy McIntosh handed him his first team debut on 5 February 1955, in a 0–0 Irish Cup first round draw with Glentoran. Maurice Tadman, who succeeded McIntosh as the club's manager in the summer of 1955, preferred to use Dougan as a target man centre-forward, as Dougan's height made him adept at winning and flicking on headers in the opposition penalty area. Whilst playing part- time for Distillery he also worked at the Harland and Wolff shipbuilding company. Though the maximum wage in England discouraged many of Belfast's top players from leaving their hometown, Dougan was determined to leave for the English Football League at the earliest opportunity, particularly so following the death of his mother in June 1955.
A Sports Illustrated preview described him as "tall and powerful, capable of acting as a target man, yet also has the technical gifts to play deeper or on the flank." On 13 June, he scored twice in Denmark's narrow 3–2 defeat to Portugal in the second group match. After scoring his second goal, Bendtner revealed the logo of a bookmaker on his underpants, in an instance of ambush marketing for which UEFA banned him for one 2014 World Cup qualifying match and fined him €100,000. The company paid the fine. On 12 October 2012, he scored the equalising goal in a 1–1 draw with Bulgaria in a World Cup qualifier, and received a yellow card when playing against Italy four days later.
During Argyle's pre- season tour of Sweden, Sunday Independent journalist Rupert Metcalf assessed Robinson as more mobile than fellow new arrival, target-man Robbie Turner, and with "genuine potential, although he clearly still has some rough edges to be refined". On his first competitive start, Robinson scored twice in a minute – first a header, then a run followed by a shot from distance – in a 3–2 win against Millwall. This earned him a place in the starting eleven for the next few matches, but he failed to score and lost his place. In the second half of the season he scored once from three starts and one substitute appearance, and returned to the Fourth Division with Hereford United for 1991–92.
In October 1993, Livingstone was loaned out to Grimsby Town, with the deal being made permanent for a £140,000 fee two months later. Grimsby were a small club struggling to survive in the First Division under Alan Buckley. He was an instant hit at Blundell Park and his performances earned him respect amongst the "Mariners" fans, he formed notable impressive strike partnerships with Clive Mendonca, Jack Lester and Lee Nogan. "Livvo" as he was known to Grimsby supporters, was able to use his frame and weight to make himself a handy target man, and was a frequent goalscorer in his ten years with the club. Despite recording just seven home wins in 1993–94, Town remained safely in mid-table.
At club level, Flo usually played as a centre-forward. For the Norwegian national team, he also acted as a target man, but instead played right winger, and was instrumental for the tactics applied by former Norway coach Egil Olsen. Playing a characteristic 4–5–1 formation, the left back would often hit long crosses to Flo, who in turn would head the ball to either one of the central midfielders or to the striker. This was known as the Flo Pass. He played for Stryn, Sogndal, Molde F.K., Lierse S.K., Sheffield United F.C. and Strømsgodset I.F.. He was capped 53 times, and scored 11 goals for the Norwegian national team and was part of his country's squads at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups.
After establishing himself as a first-team player for the country in 2001, Khalid's international career was rocked when he was sacked by the then-head coach Allan Harris, along with Kamarulzaman Hassan and Azmin Azram Abdul Aziz for staying out late at a disco before the 2002 World Cup preliminary games against Qatar, Palestine and Hong Kong.Malaysia axe disco trio Khalid is widely considered as the best target man in the country, and has been proven right by coaches such as Bertalan Bicskei, who stuck with him throughout the 2004 Tiger Cup. He eventually silenced his critics with 2 goals against archrivals Thailand, in a game in which Malaysia won 2-1. Malaysia layak ke separuh akhir -- Dua jaringan Khalid .
Gayle was born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. A powerful target-man centre forward, he worked in a printers and on a building site before beginning his professional career. He played for a number of non-league teams, Alvechurch, Highgate United, Tamworth, Stratford Town, Solihull Borough, Sutton Coldfield Town and Mile Oak Rovers, before joining his hometown club, Bromsgrove Rovers in late 1987. He followed Bromsgrove manager Bobby Hope to Burton Albion in 1988, from where he and Steve Cotterill joined Wimbledon in February 1989. In November 1990, after only 20 league games and 2 goals for Wimbledon and following an alleged training ground bust-up with Keith Curle, Gayle moved to Birmingham City for £175,000, helping the Blues to promotion in 1992.
Arshavin playing for Zenit in 2009. In 2000, Arshavin was included in the Zenit first-team squad, making his debut in a 3–0 away win over English side Bradford City in the Intertoto Cup, coming on as a first-half substitute for Andrey Kobelev. He played in various positions on the field, starting as a right midfielder, then as an attacking midfielder, and finally adopted the second striker's role playing on a flank or behind the target man. Arshavin playing for Zenit in 2008. In the 2007 Russian Premier League season, Shava (Шава in Russian), as he was nicknamed by Zenit fans, guided his Zenit side to the title in starting all 30 matches, scoring 11 goals and providing 11 assists which was the most in the Russian Premier League that year en route.
On 7 June 2017, Makienok signed a three-year contract with Dutch Eredivisie club FC Utrecht, where he was meant to succeed Sébastien Haller as the team's target- man. After making two appearances in the Europa League qualifiers he tore his anterior cruciate ligament keeping him sidelined for a lengthy period. Makienok had multiple complications and setbacks during his rehabilitation, only making his comeback on the pitch two years after suffering the injury, on 31 October 2019 in a 1-4 cup win over fifth tier club Excelsior '31, in which he scored a goal. A few days later, on 3 November, he was subbed on against Fortuna Sittard in the Eredivisie and scored his first goal in the Dutch league only three minutes later as Utrecht won 6-0.
During the winter transfer period, Celtic and Rangers expressed interest in signing Futács, with Rangers wanting him to replace the departing Nikica Jelavić and Celtic seeking a target-man. No move materialised before the transfer deadline was closed, and Portsmouth was keen to keep Futács as their striker while he considered staying with Portsmouth Football Club to help them secure survival in the Championship after they were losing a number of key players due to financial problems. Futács scored his fourth goal for the club, as Portsmouth won 4–1 against Birmingham City on 20 March 2012, giving the club their first win since the club entered administration. On 14 April 2012, Futács replaced Rekik in the 76th minute against Doncaster Rovers and scored in stoppage time to earn a 4–3 win for Pompey.
The following season began in disappointing manner. Following a number of heavy defeats the club found themselves drafted into a relegation battle, occupying the final relegation spot for a period of the season. However, a resurgence of form in the New Year following the return of target man Lee Miller, and fellow front-man Rory Loy saw Carlisle string together a number of good results to claw themselves clear of the relegation zone, eventually finishing the season in 17th position. The club retained Greg Abbott as manager, offering a 1-year extension to his current deal, whilst also extending assistant Graham Kavanagh's contract for another season. The 2013-14 season started in disastrous style, with a 5–1 home defeat against Leyton Orient in which striker Lee Miller was sent off for violent conduct.
He started in new manager Alan Dicks's second game in charge, and remained a first team regular throughout the rest of the season, scoring nine goals in 32 league and cup games. In the FA Cup the club beat Bristol derby rivals Bristol Rovers and Middlesbrough, before losing 2–0 to Leeds United in a bad tempered game that saw Gary Sprake sent off for punching Garland in the jaw. He formed an effective strike partnership with big target man John Galley in the 1968–69 and 1969–70 seasons, and was linked with moves away to bigger clubs. On 8 April 1970, Garland won his only international cap, for England under-23 in a 4–1 win over Bulgaria at Home Park; he was a substitute for Paul Edwards.
Giroud is capable of playing in several offensive positions, but usually plays as a striker or as a centre-forward; he has also occasionally been used as a second striker, or even as a false 9. A hard- working striker, he is known in particular for his reliable goal scoring rate, size, physical strength, heading accuracy, powerful shot, ability to hold up the ball with his back to goal, and link-up play, or create space for his teammates with his movement off the ball. He is also associated with making runs to the front post that outwit defenders. Due to his playing style and penchant for scoring goals after coming off the bench, he has been described as a "target man", and as a "super sub" in the media.
The most common modern formations include between one and three forwards; for example, a lone striker in a 4–2–3–1, paired strikers in a 4–4–2 or a striker and two wingers in a 4–3–3. Coaches will often field one striker who plays on the shoulder of the last opposing defender and another attacking forward who plays somewhat deeper and assists in creating goals as well as scoring. The former is sometimes a large striker, typically known as a "target man", who is used either to distract opposing defenders to help teammates score, or to score himself; the latter is usually of quicker pace, and is required to have some abilities like finding holes in the opposing defence and, sometimes, dribbling. In other cases, strikers will operate on the wings of the field and work their way goalwards.
Olsen believes that getting the ball down the field through the air to the attackers or flank players gave less chance for losing control. His use of a player with good heading abilities as a target man on the flank, such as Jostein Flo, was a major break with the established idea that all flank players should be small, quick and good dribblers. He is opposed to stationary offensive players, and argues that offensive runs (also for players that do not possess the ball) should be carried out as often as possible when one's team has the ball, as multiple simultaneous runs are very difficult to defend against. He also holds the idea that breakthrough passes to the area behind the opponent's defensive line should be sought out very often, and that frequent offensive runs towards this area is important.
On 17 May 2004, Van Persie signed a four- year deal with Arsenal for £2.75 million, just over half of Feyenoord's original asking price of £5 million. Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, who planned to convert Van Persie from a left winger to a centre forward as he had successfully done with star player Thierry Henry, said of his new acquisition, "He can play on the left side of midfield, as a creative player behind the main strikers or as a target man."Robin Van Persie Bio, Stats, News ESPN Soccernet Arsenal had further padded their stable of strikers in January by signing Spanish forward José Antonio Reyes, leaving the two to battle for playing time. Van Persie made his debut and won a trophy in the process, as he came on as a substitute in the 3–1 FA Community Shield victory over Manchester United on 8 August 2004.
A large and prolific striker, Bierhoff was a strong, physical, aggressive, and powerful player, who played mainly as a target man in the centre-forward role. Although he was not particularly skilful with his feet from a technical standpoint, or a particularly good ball-player, he was known in particular for his aerial ability; in addition to his height, strength, and elevation, he was able to execute headers with power and precision, having scored several critical goals with his head throughout his career, for both club and country, which led him to be regarded as one of the best players in the world with his head and as a specialist in the air. In addition to scoring goals, Bierhoff was also capable of providing assists to his teammates with his head through knock-downs. Although he was less adept at scoring with his feet, he also possessed a powerful shot.
VfR Mannheim competed in the Oberliga Süd from the 1945–46 season until the formation of the Bundesliga in 1962 (See History of German football#The Formation of the Bundesliga), and de la Vigne was one of the few players to make his professional debut at the highest level aged 26. He played his first game on 1 June 1947, in the 33rd match of the season – a derby match against local rivals SV Waldhof Mannheim – but could not prevent the team losing 3–0. He did not wait long for his first victory, however, which came 14 days later in another derby – this time a 3–1 win against VfL Neckarau. On paper, de la Vigne was a Striker, but he operated more as a playmaker than a target man and was known for having good technique, and his playing style was described as having an "aesthetic" quality.
A tall forward, with a slender physique, Crouch was known for possessing a good first touch, despite his stature, as well as an eye for goal; however, he was also known for his lack of significant pace, strength, power, and athleticism, while his movement occasionally came under criticism in the media. He usually played as a target man in a centre-forward role throughout his career, or as a striker, due to his ability to hold up the ball with his back to goal and link-up with his teammates. Although he was criticised in his youth for his limited ability in the air, despite his height, and for his inability to out–jump other players, he holds the record for the most headed goals in Premier League history. He was also known for his longevity, and had a penchant for scoring acrobatic goals from bicycle kicks.
In Lippi's formation, Totti occupied the advanced creative role behind the main forward, in particular target-man Luca Toni, while Pirlo was deployed in the deep-lying playmaking role; the two players were supported defensively by hard-working box-to-box midfielders, such as Daniele De Rossi, Gennaro Gattuso, Simone Perrotta and Simone Barone, as well as winger Mauro Camoranesi, and attacking full-backs Gianluca Zambrotta and Fabio Grosso, who were expected to push up the flanks. The Pirlo-Gattuso partnership in Italy's midfield, in particular, proved to be extremely effective, as Lippi led Italy all the way to the final of the tournament, where they beat France 5–3 in a penalty shoot-out after a 1–1 draw. While the team was praised for adopting a more offensive approach than Lippi's predecessors, which saw a World Cup record of ten of the team's 23 players score, with the squad netting 12 goals in total, the team also stood out for its defensive stability.
Angell switched to Southend United, who had won promotion into the Third Division after finishing one point and one place ahead of County. Stockport wanted £250,000 for the player, but Southend only offered £15,000 – a Football League tribunal later set the fee at £100,000, though Stockport had to pay Derby £19,500 as part of an agreed sell-on clause. He formed an effective partnership with target-man Ian Benjamin and became joint-top scorer in the Third Division in 1990–91, as he and Bolton's Tony Philliskirk scored 26 goals. The "Shrimpers" won promotion as the Third Division's runners-up, finishing one point behind champions Cambridge United and two points ahead of fourth placed Bolton. Southend settled into the Second Division, finishing in the top-half of the table in 1991–92, and Angell again finished as the club's top scorer with 23 goals and was named as the club's Player of the Year.
During this time he had to deal with issues such as sacking defender Daniel Jones for physically attacking captain Doug Loft during training, and had to deal with months of speculation over his own future after chairman Norman Smurthwaite took until May before offering him a new one-year rolling contract. He signed the contract the following month. After eleven players left the club in 2014, Adams rebuilt for the 2014–15 campaign by signing left- sided player Colin Daniel, Northern Ireland internationals Ryan McGivern and Michael O'Connor, pacey winger Mark Marshall, Crewe Alexandra attacker Byron Moore, veteran midfielder Michael Brown, and midfielder Steve Jennings, and also took in three loanees in Swiss full-back Freddie Veseli, highly rated striker Jordan Slew and French target man Achille Campion. Defeat to local rivals Crewe Alexandra marked the club's fifth consecutive loss, and after the game Adams accepted that his position would be under threat if results did not turn around quickly.
Lukaku is a left-footed player, who in 2014 was named by The Guardian as one of the ten most promising young players in Europe. A large and physically powerful striker, with an eye for goal, Lukaku has been known to use his physicality to get around defenders. However, despite his size, strength, physical build, and ability to hold-up play with his back to goal, his favoured role is not as a target-man in the centre, but as an out-and-out striker or poacher; due to his tactical versatility, he is also capable of playing as a winger. A well-rounded forward, who is also strong in the air, beyond his physical qualities and goalscoring ability, he possesses pace, athleticism, awareness, good link-up play, and good technique, as well as an ability to get into good attacking positions or create space for teammates with his intelligent runs off the ball.
Described as a traditional "target-man" with an eye for goal, Pellè is a large, strong and hard-working striker who excels in the air due to his height and physical attributes. As a centre-forward, he is known for his powerful and accurate finishing ability with his head and feet, as well as his accurate volleys and penalty-kick taking; he is also capable of using his strength and solid first touch to hold up the ball with his back to goal, and either link- up with other players or create chances for teammates. Labelled as a "late bloomer" by sportswriter James Horncastle, Pellè's playing style and characteristics have led him to be compared to compatriot Luca Toni in the Italian media. Pellè has also drawn praise in the media for his work-rate off the ball, and has been described as a mobile forward, who chases down and presses his opponents.
Andersson was considered one of the top-class strikers of his generation. A tall, athletic, and physically strong forward, who was also a prolific goalscorer, in spite of his lack of pace or notable technical skills, he was renowned for his work-rate, hold-up play with his back to goal, and in particular his excellent abilities in the air, which enabled him both to score goals with his head and get on the end of long balls to provide assists for his teammates from knock-downs; due to his playing style, he was frequently dubbed an "old-fashioned" centre-forward or "target-man" in the media throughout his career. BBC has described Andersson as "one of the world's greatest forwards in the air", adding that "his aerial ability is complemented by decent passing and unselfish support play that has allowed other strikers to flourish alongside him." Regarding his aerial prowess, Carlo Ancelotti described him as being "practically impossible" to mark in the air.
On 14 December 2000, Gayle was released by Shrewsbury, joining a Torquay United side in need of a target man that up to that time under manager Wes Saunders they had never really had. He made his Torquay league debut on 16 December 2000 against Hull City at Boothferry Park, a rare 2–1 away win for the Gulls, but injured his hamstring during the game and was out for the next month. By the time he returned, Torquay were deeper in trouble at the foot of the league, but Gayle played his part in ensuring survival, appearing mainly as a substitute to add weight to Torquay's lightweight attack late in the game. However, when he came on as a late substitute in the relegation decider at Barnet on 5 May 2001, he missed several chances to put the game beyond Barnet's reach, or at least test their goalkeeper, only adding to the anxiety of the fans in the away end.
Costa has also been attributed with a greater ability to keep possession of the ball than any Chelsea striker since Drogba first left the club in 2012. That same year, Henry Winter of The Telegraph noted that Costa "...has the technique, the strength and the burst of acceleration to destroy defences." Costa's size, technique, and strength, coupled with his link-up play and ability to hold up the ball with his back to goal allow him to be an effective target-man; moreover, his constant movement and powerful running in the centre-forward role allows him to distract opponents and in turn create space for teammates. Although he was initially known to be inconsistent in the earlier part of his career, due to his low goalscoring rate, he later established himself as a good finisher as his career progressed, which along with his composure in front of goal and ability inside the penalty box, made him a prolific goalscorer, and even saw him regarded by several pundits and managers as one of the best strikers in the world at his peak.
Pavoletti has been described as a large, direct, and "old fashioned" centre-forward, due to his hold-up play with his back to goal and, in particular, his ability in the air, as well as the fact that he mainly operates in the penalty area; however, he is also known for his movement across the entire attacking area of the pitch. His height, combined with his heading accuracy, timing, and elevation give him an edge in winning aerial challenges; as such, many of his goals are from headers, and he often functions as a target-man. A tall, physically strong, determined, and hard-working right-footed striker, although he is neither particularly quick nor particularly skilful from a technical standpoint, he is known for his intelligent attacking movement, positional sense, and eye for goal, as well as his link-up play, and his ability to get on the end of his teammates' crosses and finish off chances in the six-yard box with his head as well as either foot.
He was appointed manager of Tranmere for a second time by Peter Johnson towards the end of the 1986–87 season, with the club fighting to avoid relegation out of the Football League. Safety was only guaranteed in the last game of the season with a 1–0 home win over Exeter City. King signed Jim Steel to act as target man for striker Ian Muir. The move was inspired and the team enjoyed considerable success together in the seasons to follow. They rose to a mid-table finish in 1987–88, before winning promotion as Fourth Division runners-up in 1988–89. Tranmere then finished fourth in the Third Division in 1989–90, missing out on a second successive promotion after losing 2–0 to Notts County in the play-off final. They played at Wembley four times in two years, winning the Associate Members' Cup in 1990 with a 2–1 victory over Bristol Rovers. He led the "Superwhites" promotion with a 1–0 win over Bolton Wanderers in the 1991 play-off final, after Tranmere finished fifth in 1990–91.
In the wake of 2015 season, the general assembly of MTÜ JK Welco decided to take a bold move and following the decision, all three teams managed by MTÜ JK Welco are competing under new name – Tartu JK Welco. Significant changes were done to coaching stuff and Siim Valtna took over as lone head coach, while his brother Mikk came back home and joined the proud Black-White Army on the field where he was given the privilege to be el capitan once again. Additionally, strong and experienced centre-back Lehar The Terminator Savikink and nimble target- man Hannes Tiru from FC Levadia joined the ranks and improved the quality of the team. The season, ended with 2nd place and Welco played for promotion to Esiliiga B. In the first leg Welco won Tallinna FC Puuma 5–0 and although in the second leg the team had to face 0–2 loss, Welco ensured a place in Esiliiga B. In 2015–16 Estonian Cup Welco made it to 1/16-final where the team faced Premium League team FC Flora.
Swan also suffered, as he played the game with Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park despite suffering from a painful heel injury, only to require stitches to his eye socket following a kick to the face from Simon Coleman; despite all of this Ternent still insisted that Swan got back on the field for the final fifteen minutes of a 3–0 defeat. Swan went public with his desire to leave the club in November 1990, and handed in a transfer request after Ternent refused to use him as a defender rather than an attacker. Following Ternent's dismissal new boss Terry Dolan agreed to let Swan go for a reasonable price, as he was aware that Swan was liable to "kick off a bit" if his requests were not granted, and Dolan was also in need of money to build a new team. Whilst waiting for an offer he played Swan as a target man alongside strike partner Andy Payton; Swan scored thirteen goals and Payton scored twelve, though this was not enough to prevent the club from suffering relegation.
Surprisingly, Serbia started playing much better, creating two excellent scoring opportunities in quick succession. However, in the 85th minute, following a harmless-looking Ghana cross, Kuzmanović handled in his own penalty area thus gifting Ghanaians the penalty and a 1–0 lead. Forced to chase the result for the remaining 5+ minutes, ten-man Serbia pushed forward in numbers in a desperate attempt of coming up with an equalizer thus leaving itself vulnerable to counterattack from quick Ghanaians and was extremely lucky not to go 0–2 down as Ghana hit the post in a one-on-one situation with goalkeeper Stojković. Getting no points from the opening match meant that Serbia faced a must-win situation against its next opponent, powerhouse Germany that had destroyed Australia in their first match. Antić decided to switch the tactical formation to 4-3-3, which, when needed, adapted to more defensive 4-5-1 with young Subotić replacing suspended Luković in central defense, the three-man midfield had Ninković, Kuzmanović, and Stanković while upfront tall target-man Žigić got joined by wingers Krasić and Jovanović.
His form earned him an international call-up for England, and he made his debut in the starting eleven in a friendly against Hungary. In the run-up to the start of the 1999–2000 FA Premier League season, pundit Rodney Marsh predicted that Phillips would struggle to get more than five or six goals at the higher level. Forming a potent "little and large" strike pairing with veteran target- man Niall Quinn, Phillips scored his sixth goal on 18 September – the first of a hat-trick against Derby County – and was named Premier League Player of the Month for October. His goal tally was 20 by mid-January and 30 by the season's end, a total that earned him not only the Premier League Golden Boot but also the European Golden Shoe award – , he remains the only Englishman to have won the latter – and with a 14-goal return from Quinn contributed to Sunderland's seventh-place finish, just missing out on a UEFA Cup place. In January 2001, Phillips scored his 104th goal for Sunderland, breaking the club's post-war goalscoring record.
Sergej Milinković-Savić has established himself as a "complete midfielder", in the modern sense of the term, which earned him the moniker the Paul Pogba of Serbia. A versatile player, he is capable of playing in several midfield roles, including as a "trequartista," or in a holding role, although he is usually deployed as a central midfielder, in the "mezzala" role. His style of play has been compared by pundits to that of players such as Zinedine Zidane and Yaya Touré, as he blends the traditional attacking movement, positional sense, and finishing ability of an attacking midfielder, with the height and physicality of a target man or defensive midfielder; as such, he also is effective in the air, and is capable of scoring goals with his head as well as either foot, by making late runs from behind into the penalty area, or striking from distance. He also possesses good technique, tactical intelligence, vision, and passing ability, despite his lack of pace, as well as tenacity and an excellent defensive work-rate, which enables him to help out at both ends of the pitch, carry the ball, and start attacking plays after winning back possession.
A dynamic, hard-working, tenacious, skilful, elegant, and tactically versatile midfielder, who is comfortable using either foot, Bentancur has been described as a tall and "physically strong" player, who is capable of playing in any midfield position, including as a defensive midfielder, as a central midfielder, as a winger on either flank, in a box-to-box role, or even as a mezzala, or as an attacking midfielder behind the forwards, due to his ability to make attacking runs from behind. He also possesses good close control, technique, and quick footwork, which enable him to get past opponents when in possession, while his vision, intelligence, personality, and incisive passing also allow him to set the tempo of his team's play in a more creative role as a regista deep in midfield, and create goalscoring opportunities for his teammates after winning back the ball. His height and strong frame also enable him to act as a "target man" in an advanced midfield role; he has even played as a second striker on occasion. Although his acceleration is not particularly impressive, he is also a mobile player, who is capable of pressing opponents further up the pitch.
Chikabala was born in Chambishi and spent his youth years with the local team FAZ Division I side Chambishi Blackburn (now called Chambishi FC) before moving to Mufulira Blackpool in 1984 where he spent two seasons and thereafter joined Ndola side Vitafoam United in 1986. A skilful attacking midfielder who could also play as a target man, his performances attracted the attention of Nchanga Rangers and he signed for them in early 1987. Nicknamed ‘Mukishi Joe’ he augmented a good Rangers frontline featuring Stone Nyirenda, Goeffrey Mulenga, Gilbert Mukumbo, Godfrey Kangwa, Benjamin Bwalya and Bruce Mwape, and when Nyirenda left in mid-1987 to join Belgian club Harelbeke, he took over as the team’s centre-forward.Mwala, Melody. "Chikabala put to rest," Times of Zambia, 31 December 1997 Chikabala was one of the leading players in the Zambian league over the next three seasons though silverware eluded him as he failed to win a trophy with Rangers, with their best placed league finish being third in 1990, the year in which he left before the end of the season to join Maritimo in August 1990.
