In the mid-1950s, the Manchester City manager Les McDowall introduced a new tactical system using a deep-lying centre-forward, which became known as the Revie Plan after Don Revie who played centre-forward. Most modern centre-forwards operate in front of the second strikers or central attacking midfielders, and do the majority of the ball handling outside the box. The present role of centre-forward is sometimes interchangeable with that of an attacking midfielder, especially in the 4–3–1–2 or 4–1–2–1–2 formations. The term centre-forward is taken from the early football playing formation in which there were five forward players: two outside forwards, two inside forwards, and one centre-forward. When numbers were introduced in the 1933 English FA Cup final, one of the two centre-forwards that day wore the number 9 – Everton's Dixie Dean, a strong, powerful forward who had set the record for the most goals scored in a season in English football during the 1927–28 season.

Dowling first came to prominence as a hurler with Ardscoil Rís in Limerick. Having played in every grade as a hurler, he was centre-forward on the college's senior hurling team. On 11 March 2010, Dowling scored a point from play when Ardscoil Rís defeated Thurles CBS in the final of the Harty Cup. Lowes was born in High Spen, County Durham, the second child of George Lowes, a stone miner, and his wife Isabella. At the time of the 1911 Census, the family were living in Rowlands Gill. He became a central player in the Golden Team of the early and mid-1950s; during this time, Ferenc Puskás, Sándor Kocsis and Hidegkuti provided the Hungarians a total of 198 goals. Born in Tottington, Lancashire, he began his playing career with his hometown club before joining Football League Third Division North side Nelson in February 1931. James Henry "Jimmy" Sullivan (14 November 1904 – May 1974) was an English professional association footballer who played as a centre forward. As an amateur centre-forward Jimmy Sullivan scored 23 goals for Barrow Reserves, which led to him entering League football with Crewe Alexandra. The regular Football League restarted in time for the 1946–47 season. Ramsey moved into club-owned lodgings in Southampton with a close friend from the army, Alf Freeman, an inside-forward who had also signed for the club. Ramsey started the season in the reserve team, selected at centre-forward, and scored in each of the first three games. John George Peart (3 October 1888 – 3 September 1948) was an English footballer who played centre forward for 13 different teams, in a career which spanned World War I. After he retired he became a football manager until his death in 1948. Peart was a centre forward who had a nomadic career. He played for eight league clubs in a career which spanned 19 years and every division of the English Football League. He also played non-league football in the Southern and Welsh leagues, as well as guesting for other clubs during the First World War.

Pratto has an unusually fast pace for a player with 1.88m, and frequently floats outside the box to assist other players. He has been praised for his technique, ball control, and link-up play. Tactically, Pratto has not usually been deployed as a target man centre forward throughout most of his career, as is commonly the case for a player with a strong physique; he has normally played as a striker or second striker. Fred Geary (23 January 1868 – 8 January 1955) was an English professional footballer who played at centre forward for Everton in the 1890s, and made two appearances for England, scoring a hat-trick on his debut. At Everton, he was a prolific goal-scorer, with 86 goals in 99 appearances, helping them to win the Football League championship for the first time in 1890–91. Løvenkrands joined Scottish club Rangers for £1.3 million in June 2000. He went on to play 182 games for Rangers, winning two Scottish Premier League championships. He scored 54 goals for Rangers, including a last-minute winner against Old Firm rivals Celtic in the 2002 Scottish Cup Final. During his time at Rangers, he was often played out of position as a left winger instead of his natural position of centre forward. He played the 2005–06 season in the centre forward position, as well as on the left wing, and had his highest- scoring season at Rangers.

Bristol City struggled throughout 1956–57 hovering above the relegation places for much of the season before settling into mid table with a run of 8 league victories in 9 matches between mid February and mid April 1957. Atyeo started the season with five goals in the opening 4 matches playing mainly at inside right alongside Hinshelwood on the right wing. However, in mid November manager Pat Beasley sold both centre forward Jimmy Rogers and left winger Jack Boxley to Coventry City. This prompted the signing of Irish centre forward Dermot Curtis from Shelborne for £5,000 in December 1956.

On 22 September 1968, Griffin captained Kerry to an All-Ireland final appearance against Down. He scored two points from centre-forward but, for the third time in his career, ended on the losing side in an All-Ireland final following a 2–12 to 1–13 defeat. On 18 May 1969, Griffin was at centre-forward when Kerry defeated Offaly by 3–11 to 0–08 in the National League Home Final. He later missed the two-legged final against New York but was entitled to a winners' medal following the 2–33 to 2–24 aggregate victory.

Duncan Morton Lindsay (21 March 1903 in Cambuslang – 1972) was a Scottish professional football centre-forward. Lindsay began his career with his local side Cambuslang Rangers. In 1925 he moved to East Fife and in April 1926 joined Cowdenbeath where he was converted from a winger to a centre-forward. In May 1930, after 82 goals in 126 league games, Lindsay moved to Newcastle United for a fee of £2,700 as a potential replacement for Hughie Gallacher. Despite only playing 19 times in his only season with Newcastle (1930–31) he was top scorer with 12 goals.

Robert Dennis Latchford (born 18 January 1951) is an English former association footballer who played as a centre forward. He made more than 500 appearances in the Football League, playing for Birmingham City, Everton, Swansea City and Coventry City in the First Division, and won 12 full caps for England. Latchford was the complete centre-forward, able to score or create chances for teammates using either of his feet or his head. Despite his size – 6 feet (1.83m) tall – he was very fast over short distances, a quality he used to his advantage when scoring many of his goals.

WM Formation: the inside forwards (red) occupy a more withdrawn position supporting the centre-forward and outside right and left. In early 2–3–5 formations the inside-forwards would flank the centre-forward on both sides. With the rise of the "WM" formation, the inside forwards were brought back to become attacking midfielders, supplying balls to the centre-forward and the two attacking outside forwards – known as the outside right and outside left. In Italian football jargon, the role of an inside forward was initially occasionally known as a mezzala (literally "half–winger," not to be confused with wing-half); however, the use of this particular term to describe inside forwards is now obsolete, as the mezzala label was later reapplied to describe the role of offensive–minded central midfielders in Italian football, while the inside forward role was instead labelled as "interno" ("internal," in Italian) in Italian football in subsequent years.

Henry Bentley Hancock (late 1874 – 1924) was an English professional footballer. An inside left or centre forward, he played in the Football League for Blackpool, Oldham Athletic and West Bromwich Albion, but was also on the books of Stockport County and Manchester City.

When Bristol City won the Third Division South championship by 9 clear points in 1954–55, Jimmy Rogers laid claim to a regular place at outside right until January and then at centre forward when Arnold Rodgers suffered an achilles tendon injury. In season 1954–55 Rogers made 44 appearances scoring 25 goals including 15 goals in his 18 appearances at centre forward. Jimmy Rogers was the regular centre forward for Bristol City in their first season back in the Second Division in 1955–56 making 34 appearances scoring 25 goals including a hat trick in the 6–0 win v Plymouth Argyle on 27 December 1955. Rogers scored 5goals from 16 appearances at centre forward in 1956–57 for Bristol City prior to his transfer to Coventry City. Jimmy Rogers and Jack Boxley moved on to Coventry City in December 1956. Peter Doherty re-signed Rogers back from Coventry City for £3,000 in December 1958. Coventry City finished runners up in the newly created Fourth Division in season 1958–59. In 1958–59 Rogers made 9 appearances without scoring as he shared outside left duties with Johnny Watkins. Bristol City were relegated when finishing 22nd and bottom of the Second Division in 1959–60 when Jimmy Rogers made 31 appearances scoring 16 goals mainly from the right wing; Atyeo also scored 16 goals in this season but from 42 appearances.

As a schoolboy Griffiths played as a centre forward, playing for the Forefield Lane Junior School team in Crosby, Merseyside. He moved up to Crosby County Secondary School, playing for their intermediate team before going to Bootle Technical College aged 12. Whilst there he played for Bootle Schoolboys, and during this spell he transferred from centre forward to full back, the position he would make his own for the rest of his career. He was so impressive playing there that he was picked for the Lancashire County Schoolboys side, where he was spotted by Everton scouts who drafted him into their Youth squad in May 1954.

On joining the club he stated that he hoped to play at centre-forward, but would be happy to play in other positions if required to do so. Manager Keith Curle spoke of his previous efforts to sign Hope and joked that "I’ve probably chased Hallam more than I’ve ever chased anyone else through my whole life - ex-wife, ex-partner and current girlfriend included!" However Hope struggled at centre-forward and received criticism from "Blues" supporters, though by March had regained confidence and form playing as an left-sided attacking midfielder. William Robertson (ex Dumbarton Corinthians) came in at inside right in place of Brander with injured Stevenson’s place at centre half taken by Cairney, and Duncan came in for Chapman at centre forward. Arthurlie had easily won their home tie in October but it was Dumbarton who made home turf count by winning 3-2. A week later Dumbarton travelled to Coatbridge to play Albion Rovers. Again changes were made to the team with Mitchell returning at right back, Ritchie taking Cairney’s place at centre half and Brander being preferred at centre forward.

George Beel (26 February 1900 – 30 December 1980) was a professional footballer who played as a centre forward. He is regarded as the best centre forward in Burnley's history and holds their records for the highest number of goals in a season and the highest number of league goals ever. He started playing football during World War I playing for Blackpool – as he was stationed in Blackpool – in the Wartime Leagues, where he impressed enough to earn himself a trial with Manchester United in 1919. However, he did not do enough to get a contract and went to his hometown team Lincoln City in October 1919.

Sergio Brighenti (; born 23 September 1932) is an Italian former football player and coach. As a professional player, Brighenti played as a forward at both club and international level, before beginning his coaching career. Brighenti was a quick, hardworking, and dynamic centre-forward, with good technical ability, and a powerful, accurate shot, who was known for his team–play as well as his eye for goal; as such, his role was more akin to that of a "centravanti di manovra," in Italian football jargon (literally translating to "manoeuvring centre-forward"), which was similar to that of a second striker, and a precursor to the modern false-9 role.

On 29 October 1995, Duignan lined out at centre-forward when St. Rynagh's faced Seir Kieran in the final replay, having earlier missed the drawn match due to being on his honeymoon. He was held scoreless from play in the 0-10 to 0-09 defeat. St. Rynagh's faced Seir Kieran in a second successive final on 13 October 1996. Duignan started the game on the bench but was introduced as a substitute in the 0-13 to 1-08 defeat. On 8 November 1998, Duignan scored 1-01 from centre-forward when St. Rynagh's drew 1-10 to 0-13 with Seir Kieran in the final.

He often played in the centre forward position for his club, roaming the pitch, which later drew comparisons with Don Revie and Nándor Hidegkuti in this position. In the 1931–32 season the City team, which now included the Scottish centre forward Alec Herd, managed to reach the semi- final of the FA Cup but were defeated by Arsenal by 1–0 with a goal from Brook's England teammate Cliff Bastin. Brook had scored a brace in a 6–1 demolition of Brentford in the fourth round of that year's competition. Greater success for Manchester City in the FA Cup would follow in subsequent seasons.

During the 1957-58 National League, Larkin was drafted onto the Tipperary senior hurling team. He made his Munster Championship debut on 1 June 1958 when he was introduced as a substitute for John Haugh in a 2-10 to 1-05 defeat of Limerick. On 6 July 1958, Larkin won a Munster Championship medal after lining out at centre-forward in Tipperary's 4-12 to 1-05 victory over Waterford in the final. After illness rule him out of a starting fifteen place for the All-Ireland semi-final, he was back at centre-forward for the All- Ireland final against Galway on 7 September 1958.

As such, how well a striker is performing tends to be measured purely on goals scored despite the fact that they may be contributing in other ways to a team's success. A traditional centre forward was required to be tall in height and strong physically in order to be able to win the ball in the area from crosses and attempt to score with either their feet or head, or to knock the ball down for a teammate to score. Whilst these assets are still an advantage, in the modern game speed and movement are also required as there is more interplay when attacking. In a 4–4–2 or 4–4–1–1 formation the centre forward is often paired with a second striker who may play around him or in a slightly withdrawn role respectively, though it is not unknown to play two recognised centre forwards.

Both teams employed the formation typical of the era: two full backs, a centre half, two wing halves, two outside forwards, two inside forwards and a centre forward. However, their tactical approaches differed. Southampton used 22 different players during the 1933–34 season, thirteen of whom scored during the campaign. The team played in a 2–3–5 formation throughout, using two full-backs, three half-backs, two outside forwards, two inside forwards and a centre-forward. The following year Chelsea beat Real Madrid in another replay to win the European Cup Winners Cup. Although he spent much of his Chelsea career as a right back, he also played in central defence (his original position) and occasionally as a centre forward, once hitting a hat-trick against Ipswich Town in December 1968. Bristol City started the season poorly, Atyeo failed to score in the opening three matches at centre forward and moved to inside right for the remainder of his league appearances. Arnold Rodgers reverted to centre forward and scored four goals in the next four games and then followed this up with three successive doubles late in September.
