I talked to a number of different showrunners and writers for this article — some on the record and some on background — and the number of people who suggested The Sopranos and Six Feet Under as twin poles on a massive sliding scale of series finales got me thinking about the two as opposite endpoints on the same spectrum.
Alan Ball, the auteur behind HBO's True Blood and Six Feet Under, has created Here and Now, the story of two families: One is a white couple (Tim Robbins and Holly Hunter) with adopted (now-adult) children from Vietnam, Liberia, and Colombia (Raymond Lee, Jerrika Hinton, and Daniel Zovatto, respectively), and one younger biological daughter (Sosie Bacon).

Other notable nominees fans might recognize include comedian Amy Schumer (for Steve Martin's play Meteor Shower); Andrew Garfield (Angels in America), Laurie Metcalf and two-time Oscar winner Glenda Jackson (both for Edward Albee's Three Tall Women); Michael Cera (Lobby Hero); Nathan Lane (Angels in America); Six Feet Under alum Lauren Ambrose (My Fair Lady); and Oscar winners Denzel Washington (Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh) and Mark Rylance (Farinelli and the King).
And because the world and the business went on, others were able to step forward, through shows as varied as Will & Grace, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Queer as Folk, Six Feet Under, Brothers and Sisters, True Blood, Glee, Modern Family and Sunday's American Gods — a Starz soft-core fantasy that takes us way past those first-step Will & Grace days when characters could be homosexual as long as no sex was involved.
I typically recommend it to people who love "Six Feet Under" — it does not lack for grief narratives or poetic pauses — but if you like sibling conflict, family secrets, growing pains, teenagers getting into scrapes where not all the adults agree on the best course of action, and characters who each remember childhood a little differently for good reasons but in ways that deeply affect their adult perspectives, this is your jam.
