Many languages use the semicolon as a statement terminator. Most often this is mandatory, but in some languages the semicolon is optional in many contexts. This is mainly done at the lexer level, where the lexer outputs a semicolon into the token stream, despite one not being present in the input character stream, and is termed semicolon insertion or automatic semicolon insertion. In these cases, semicolons are part of the formal phrase grammar of the language, but may not be found in input text, as they can be inserted by the lexer.
The first printed semicolon was the work of the Italian printer Aldus Manutius the Elder in 1494. Manutius established the practice of using the semicolon to separate words of opposed meaning and to allow a rapid change in direction in connecting interdependent statements. Ben Jonson was the first notable English writer to use the semicolon systematically. The modern uses of the semicolon relate either to the listing of items or to the linking of related clauses.

The plural of semicolon in English is semicola or semicolons.
In French, a semicolon (point-virgule, literally "dot-comma") is a separation between two full sentences, used where either a colon or a comma would not be appropriate. The phrase following a semicolon has to be an independent clause, which is related to the previous one (but not explaining it, contrary to a sentence introduced by a colon). The dash character is used in French writing too, but not as widely as the semicolon. Usage of these devices (semicolon and dash) varies from author to author.
There is a nonprofit organization inspired by Project Semicolon called The IGY6; Foundation. It was created by combat veterans to support veterans and first responders, and advocate for suicide prevention and awareness. Stenus semicolon is a species of water skater in the beetle family Staphylinidae.
The semicolon, as instruction separator, is optional. Most of the time the semicolon is just omitted, except to separate multiple instructions on a line. This results in less clutter on the program page. There is no nesting of feature and class declarations.
The B6700 Algol compiler for example was notorious for error messages such as "semicolon expected" along with a listing of the source line plus a marker showing the location of trouble - often marking a semicolon. In the absence of a semicolon, if one were indeed placed as indicated, on recompilation there could well arise a message "unexpected semicolon" for it. Often, only the first error message from a compiler will be worth attending to, because subsequent messages went awry. Cancelling the current interpretation then resuming the scan at the start of the next statement is difficult when the source file is in error, and so subsequent messages are unhelpful.
Spaces, tabs and newlines used outside of string constants are called whitespace. Unlike in C, whitespace in JavaScript source can directly impact semantics. Because of a technique called "automatic semicolon insertion" (ASI), some statements that are well formed when a newline is parsed will be considered complete (as if a semicolon were inserted just prior to the newline). Some authorities advise supplying statement-terminating semicolons explicitly, because it may lessen unintended effects of the automatic semicolon insertion.
The semicolon is commonly used as parts of emoticons, in order to indicate winking or crying, as in `;)` and `;_;`. Project Semicolon is the name of a faith-based anti-suicide initiative (since the semicolon continues a sentence rather than ending it) which has led to the punctuation mark becoming a highly symbolic and popular tattoo, which is most commonly done on the wrist. The Humphrey point is sometimes used instead of a decimal point in duodecimal numbers.
Pascal adopted many language syntax features from the ALGOL language, including the use of a semicolon as a statement separator. This is in contrast to other languages, such as PL/I, C etc. which use the semicolon as a statement terminator. No semicolon is needed before the `end` keyword of a record type declaration, a block, or a case statement; before the `until` keyword of a repeat statement; and before the `else` keyword of an if statement.
The semicolon is often used to separate elements of a string of text. For example, multiple e-mail addresses in the "To" field in some e-mail clients have to be delimited by a semicolon. In Microsoft Excel, the semicolon is used as a list separator, especially in cases where the decimal separator is a comma, such as ` 0,32; 3,14; 4,50`, instead of `0.32, 3.14, 4.50`. In MATLAB and GNU Octave, the semicolon can be used as a row separator when defining a vector or matrix (whereas a comma separates the columns within a row of a vector or matrix) or to execute a command silently, without displaying the resulting output value in the console.
The presence of an extra semicolon was not permitted in early versions of Pascal. However, the addition of ALGOL-like empty statements in the 1973 Revised Report and later changes to the language in ISO 7185:1983 now allow for optional semicolons in most of these cases. A semicolon is still not permitted immediately before the `else` keyword in an if statement, because the `else` follows a single statement, not a statement sequence. In the case of nested ifs, a semicolon cannot be used to avoid the dangling else problem (where the inner if does not have an else, but the outer if does) by putatively terminating the nested if with a semicolon – this instead terminates both if clauses.
Optional semicolons or other terminators or separators are also sometimes handled at the parser level, notably in the case of trailing commas or semicolons. Semicolon insertion is a feature of BCPL and its distant descendant Go,Effective Go, "Semicolons" though it is absent in B or C."Semicolons in Go", golang-nuts, Rob 'Commander' Pike, 12/10/09 Semicolon insertion is present in JavaScript, though the rules are somewhat complex and much- criticized; to avoid bugs, some recommend always using semicolons, while others use initial semicolons, termed defensive semicolons, at the start of potentially ambiguous statements. Semicolon insertion (in languages with semicolon-terminated statements) and line continuation (in languages with newline-terminated statements) can be seen as complementary: semicolon insertion adds a token, even though newlines generally do not generate tokens, while line continuation prevents a token from being generated, even though newlines generally do generate tokens.
The semicolon' or semi-colon ' is a symbol commonly used as orthographic punctuation. In the English language, a semicolon can be used between two closely related independent clauses, provided they are not already joined by a coordinating conjunction. Semicolons can also be used in place of commas to separate the items in a list, particularly when the elements of that list contain commas. The semicolon is likely the least understood of the standard marks, and so it is not used by many English speakers.
Control structures include: if, while, do/while, for, foreach, and switch. Statements are terminated by a semicolon, not line endings.
Project Semicolon was founded by Amy Bleuel in 2013, as a tribute to her father, who died by suicide in 2003..
Although terminal marks (i.e. full stops, exclamation marks, and question marks) indicate the end of a sentence, the comma, semicolon, and colon are normally sentence-internal, making them secondary boundary marks. The semicolon falls between terminal marks and the comma; its strength is equal to that of the colon. The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language, Chapter 19, § 7.
What Sucks About Erlang, Damien Katz, 9 March 2008 In some cases the distinction between a separator and a terminator is strong, such as early versions of Pascal, where a final semicolon yields a syntax error. In other cases a final semicolon is treated either as optional syntax, or as being followed by a null statement, which is either ignored or treated as a NOP (no operation or null command); compare trailing commas in lists. In some cases a blank statement is allowed, allowing a sequence of semicolons or the use of a semicolon by itself as the body of a control flow structure. For example, a blank statement (a semicolon by itself) stands for a NOP in C/C++, which is useful in busy waiting synchronization loops.
A semicolon (ascii 59) is mandatory to terminate (and send) a message. A newline is just treated as whitespace and not needed for message termination.
"Filename", microsoft.com, 31 May 2018 In some delimiter-separated values file formats, the semicolon is used as the separator character, as an alternative to comma-separated values.
As with C, the ; used by itself can be used as a null statement in Pascal. In fact, due to the specification of the language, in a BEGIN / END block, the semicolon is optional before the END statement, thus a semicolon used there is superfluous. Also, a block consisting of ` BEGIN END;` may be used as a placeholder to indicate no action, even if placed inside another BEGIN / END block.
The set of lower-case letters, the period, comma, semicolon, colon, exclamation mark, apostrophe, and opening and closing double quotes are the same as in Grade-2 English Braille.
A period is used as a word divider to separate words. The punctuation corresponds to that of the Roman alphabet. A comma has the form of a short line, alt=ı, a period a turned vee, ʌ, like the diacritic for o, and a colon and semicolon combinations of these (semicolon î, colon double alt=ʌ). The exclamation mark is like a lambda, λ, and the question mark is like a turned Y, ⅄.
The principal difference is the Greek question mark , which developed a shape so similar to the Latinate semicolon that Unicode decomposes its separate code point identically. The middot serves as the Greek semicolon but is so uncommon that it has often been left off of Greek keyboards. The exclamation mark ( Thavmastiko) is mostly used as in English. The hyphen, the brackets, the colon, the ellipsis and the slash are also in use.
Like C, JavaScript makes a distinction between expressions and statements. One syntactic difference from C is automatic semicolon insertion, which allows the semicolons that would normally terminate statements to be omitted.
The full stop (period) (.), colon (:), semicolon (;), comma (,), question mark (?), exclamation mark (!), and ellipsis (…) are equivalent in shape to the basic symbols of punctuation (знаки препинания ) used for the common European languages, and follow the same general principles of usage. The colon is used exclusively as a means of introduction, and never, as in slightly archaic English, to mark a periodic pause intermediate in strength between the semicolon and the full stop (period) (cf. H.W. Fowler, The Kingˈs English, 1908).
Scarab of Ra is a Mac OS shareware computer game written in 1987 by Rick Holzgrafe and released in 1988 by Semicolon Software. It is an adventure set within an Egyptian pyramid.
In HTML, a semicolon is used to terminate a character entity reference, either named or numeric. The declarations of a style attribute in Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are separated and terminated with semicolons."CSS Syntax", W3Schools The file system of VAX/VMS, Files-11, uses semicolons to indicate a file's version number."VMS Help – Ext File Specs, Using File Specification Differences" The semicolon is permitted in long filenames in the Microsoft Windows file systems NTFS and VFAT, but not in its short names.

"JavaScript Semicolon Insertion: Everything you need to know", ~inimino/blog/, Friday, 28 May 2010"Semicolons in JavaScript are optional", by Mislav Marohnić, 7 May 2010 For example: a = b + c ;(d + e).foo() // Treated as: // a = b + c; // (d + e).foo(); Initial semicolons are also sometimes used at the start of JavaScript libraries, in case they are appended to another library that omits a trailing semicolon, as this can result in ambiguity of the initial statement. The five restricted productions are `return`, `throw`, `break`, `continue`, and post-increment/decrement.
In Greek, the question mark is written as the English semicolon, while the functions of the colon and semicolon are performed by a raised point , known as the (). In Georgian, three dots, , were formerly used as a sentence or paragraph divider. It is still sometimes used in calligraphy. Spanish, and no other language, uses an inverted question mark at the beginning of a question and the normal question mark at the end, as well as an inverted exclamation mark at the beginning of an exclamation and the normal exclamation mark at the end.
Mathematicians who use postfix notation may write "", meaning first apply and then apply , in keeping with the order the symbols occur in postfix notation, thus making the notation "" ambiguous. Computer scientists may write "" for this, thereby disambiguating the order of composition. To distinguish the left composition operator from a text semicolon, in the Z notation the ⨾ character is used for left relation composition. Since all functions are binary relations, it is correct to use the [fat] semicolon for function composition as well (see the article on composition of relations for further details on this notation).
Conjunctive adverbs are preceded by a semicolon or a period (full stop). They are usually followed by a comma. For example, "I told him; however, he did not remember" and "I told him. However, he did not remember" are both valid.
In Greek, the question mark is written as the English semicolon, while the functions of the colon and semicolon are performed by a raised point (•), known as the ano teleia (). In Greek the comma also functions as a silent letter in a handful of Greek words, principally distinguishing (ó,ti, 'whatever') from (óti, 'that'). Ancient Greek texts often used scriptio continua ('continuous writing'), which means that ancient authors and scribes would write word after word with no spaces or punctuation between words to differentiate or mark boundaries. Boustrophedon, or bi-directional text, was also used in Ancient Greek.
Some keyboards have a small bump on certain keys of the home row. This helps returning the fingers to the home row for touch typing. For instance, to type the word poll on a QWERTY keyboard, one would place all of one's fingers on the home row. (The right hand should be covering " " with the right thumb on the while the left hand covers " " with the left thumb on the .) The typist will then use their little finger to reach for the "" key located just above the semicolon and then return the little finger back to the semicolon key from which it originated.
Hyposmocoma semicolon is a species of moth of the family Cosmopterigidae. It was first described by Lord Walsingham in 1907. It is endemic to the Hawaiian island of Kauai. The type locality is Kaholuamano, where it was collected at an elevation of .
The interval of numbers between and , including and , is often denoted . The two numbers are called the endpoints of the interval. In countries where numbers are written with a decimal comma, a semicolon may be used as a separator to avoid ambiguity.
In the above examples, two statements are placed on the same line; this is legal, because the semicolon separates the two statements. Thus programming languages like Java, the C family, Javascript etc. use semicolons to obtain a proper structure in the respective languages.
1 = False; } This example shows a function with a more complex body, consisting of four sentences (clauses). A sentence begins with a pattern followed by an equal sign followed by a general expression on the right hand side. A sentence is terminated with a semicolon.
She also collaborated with The Lonely Island on the song "Semicolon", which was featured as part of YouTube's Comedy Week and is featured on The Lonely Island's album, The Wack Album. On November 11, 2013, Knowles' record label released its first compilation album, Saint Heron.
MySQL optionally allows having multiple statements in one statement string. Sending multiple statements at once reduces client-server round trips but requires special handling. Multiple statements or multi queries must be executed with mysqli_multi_query(). The individual statements of the statement string are separated by semicolon.
The Second Edition of BASIC, although not referred to such at the time, only made minimal changes. Released in October 1964, it allowed arrays to begin as subscript 0 instead of 1 (useful for representing polynomials) and added the semicolon, , to the `PRINT` statement. Unlike later implementations, where this left space between items, the semicolon advanced printing to the next multiple of three characters, which allowed more numbers to be "packed" into a line of output than the existing comma separator. The October version also included a separate definition for CARDBASIC, which was simply a version of BASIC for use on card-based workflows.
Some implementations allow values to be quoted, typically using double quotes and/or apostrophes. This allows for explicit declaration of whitespace, and/or for quoting of special characters (equals, semicolon, etc.). The standard Windows function GetPrivateProfileString supports this, and will remove quotation marks that surround the values.
Page 125 Arumuga Navalar apparently introduced few novel features in the area of Tamil editing. He was probably the first to use punctuation marks like the semicolon, the question mark and the exclamation mark. He produced the first “split” complex sandhi forms to facilitate reading and comprehension.
In the original 16-bit version, commands were to be written on one line, but later versions allowed more. Anything written after the # (hash) is ignored, allowing the coder to insert comments. Each line ends with a ; (semicolon), though it is not obligatory in the latest implementation.
The semicolon, as a mark separating statements, corresponds to the ordinary English usage of separating independent clauses, and gives the entire program the gross syntax of a single ordinary sentence. Of these other characters, whereas commas have continued to be widely used in programming for lists (and rare other uses, such as the comma operator that separates expressions in C), they are rarely used otherwise, and the period as the end of the program has fallen out of use. The last major use of the comma, semicolon, and period hierarchy is in Erlang (1986), where commas separate expressions; semicolons separate clauses, both for control flow and for function clauses; and periods terminate statements, such as function definitions or module attributes, not the entire program. Drawbacks of having multiple different separators or terminators (compared to a single terminator and single grouping, as in semicolon-and-braces) include mental overhead in selecting punctuation, and overhead in rearranging code, as this requires not only moving lines around, but also updating the punctuation.
In many programming languages a function, and hence an expression containing a function, may have side effects. An expression with side effects does not normally have the property of referential transparency. In many languages (e.g. C++), expressions may be ended with a semicolon (`;`) to turn the expression into an expression statement.
The Braille pattern dots-56 ( ) is a 6-dot braille cell with the middle and bottom right dots raised, or an 8-dot braille cell with the upper-middle and lower-middle right dots raised. It is represented by the Unicode code point U+2830, and in Braille ASCII with a semicolon: ;.
The simplest possible statement in C that behaves like a NOP is the so-called null statement, which is just a semi-colon in a context requiring a statement. (A compiler is not required to generate a NOP instruction in this case; typically, no instructions whatsoever would be generated.) ; Alternatively, an empty block (compound statement) may be used, and may be more legible: {} In some cases, such as the body of a function, a block must be used, but this can be empty. In C, statements cannot be empty—simple statements must end with a ; (semicolon) while compound statements are enclosed in {} (braces), which does not itself need a following semicolon. Thus in contexts where a statement is grammatically required, some such null statement can be used.
The basic element contained in an INI file is the key or property. Every key has a name and a value, delimited by an equals sign (=). The name appears to the left of the equals sign. In the Windows implementation the equal sign and the semicolon are reserved characters and cannot appear in the key.

Ancient Greek did not have spacing or interpuncts but instead ran all the letters together. By Late Antiquity, various marks were used to separate words, particularly the Greek comma. The modern Greek ano teleia mark (, ánō teleía, lit. "upper stop"), also known as the áno stigmī́ (), is the infrequently- encountered Greek semicolon and is properly romanized as such.
An independent clause (or main clause) is a clause that can stand by itself as a simple sentence. An independent clause contains a subject and a predicate and makes sense by itself. Independent clauses can be joined by using a semicolon or by using a comma followed by a coordinating conjunction (and, but, for, or, nor, so, yet, etc.).
Evelyn Ugalde Barrantes (born 1975 in Heredia Province, Costa Rica) is a journalist, writer, editor and cultural promoter of Costa Rica. She has received the Joaquín García Monge National Prize for cultural promotion twice for her work, first individually in 2009, and in 2013, along with the rest of the team, as the producer of the cultural program Semicolon.
The teleia should also be distinguished from the _ano_ teleia mark, which is named "high stop" but looks like an interpunct (a middle dot) and principally functions as the Greek semicolon. The Armenian script uses the ։ (, ). It looks similar to the colon (:). In Simplified Chinese and Japanese, a small circle is used instead of a solid dot: "。" (U+3002 "Ideographic Full Stop").
Here the digit a_H appears at rank H, which is a typical infinite hypernatural. The semicolon separates the digits at finite ranks from the digits at infinite ranks. Thus, the number 0.000...;...01, with digit "1" at infinite rank H, corresponds to the infinitesimal 10^{-H}. The difference 1 - 0.000...;...01 is 0.999...;...9, with an infinite hypernatural's worth of digits 9.
In France, the exclamation mark, question mark, semicolon, colon, percentage mark, currency symbols, hash, and guillemet all require a non-breaking space before and after the punctuation mark. Outside of France, this rule is often ignored. Computer software may aid or hinder the application of this rule, depending on the degree of localisation, as it is marked differently from most other Western punctuation.
In his 2014 song "Word Crimes", "Weird Al" Yankovic references Morissette's lyrics by singing "Irony is not coincidence", and the music video for the song shows a fire truck burning (depicted as "Irony") compared with rain during a wedding (which is described as "Weather"). Morissette herself poked fun at her grammar mistakes during a 2013 performance of "Semicolon" with The Lonely Island on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. In it, Morissette cut off their song to explain that their use of hashtag rap to demonstrate the function of a semicolon is incorrect, to which they respond that her critiquing their grammar is "ironic". Morissette further poked fun at herself in a 2015 performance of an updated version "Ironic" on The Late Late Show with James Corden, in which she added the line "It’s singing 'Ironic', when there are no ironies" to the song.
Each record begins with a semicolon (), followed by two hexadecimal digits denoting the length of the data in the record. The next two bytes represent the starting address of the data, in big-endian (most- significant byte first) hexadecimal. Up to 24 bytes of data follow. Then, there is a 2-byte (4-character) checksum: the sum of the other non- data in the record.
Amy Bleuel remarked on the initial outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, crisis hotlines having reported a major uptick, that "There's valid fear, and fear drives suicide. Also, sadness drives suicide. So these people are feeling this, and it's at an overwhelming extent that they're choosing to go that route." A book titled Project Semicolon: Your Story Isn't Over was released on September 5, 2017.
For practical purposes there is no distinction between expressions and statements. Line breaks are significant and taken as the end of a statement; a semicolon may be equivalently used. Unlike Python, indentation is not significant. One of the differences from Python and Perl is that Ruby keeps all of its instance variables completely private to the class and only exposes them through accessor methods (`attr_writer`, `attr_reader`, etc.).
Later, he studied Fine Arts, history and philosophy. In 1938, he published a dissertation on irony in the work by Eça de Queiroz. He returned to his native island in early 1939. He was a critic in many different areas, book prefaces, literary seminaries of the Professor's Course Formation of the Secondary School, articles and reviews with Ponto & Vírgula, a Portuguese word for "semicolon".
In contrast, a character entity reference refers to a character by the name of an entity which has the desired character as its replacement text. The entity must either be predefined (built into the markup language) or explicitly declared in a Document Type Definition (DTD). The format is the same as for any entity reference: :`&`name`;` where name is the case-sensitive name of the entity. The semicolon is required.
FUDI is a packet oriented protocol. Each message consists of one or more atoms, separated by one or more whitespace characters, and it's terminated by a semicolon character. An atom is a sequence of one or more characters; whitespaces inside atoms can be escaped by the backslash (ascii 92) character (see Examples below). A whitespace is either a space (ascii 32), a tab (ascii 9) or a newline (ascii 10).
Each statement in CIF consists of a keyword or letter followed by parameters and terminated with a semicolon. Spaces must separate the parameters but there are no restrictions on the number of statements per line or of the particular columns of any field. Comments can be inserted anywhere by enclosing them in parentheses. There are only a few CIF statements and they fall into one of two categories: geometry or control.
To show the length of a note, several devices are used. If the duration of note is to be doubled, the letter is either capitalized (if using Roman script) or lengthened by a diacritic (in Indian languages). For a duration of three, the letter is capitalized (or diacriticized) and followed by a comma. For a length of four, the letter is capitalized (or diacriticized) and then followed by a semicolon.

The comma operator separates expressions (which have value) in a way analogous to how the semicolon terminates statements, and sequences of expressions are enclosed in parentheses analogously to how sequences of statements are enclosed in braces: `(a, b, c)` is a sequence of expressions, separated by commas, which evaluates to the last expression `c` while `{a; b; c;}` is a sequence of statements, and does not evaluate to any value. A comma can only occur between two expressions – commas separate expressions – unlike the semicolon, which occurs at the end of a (non-block) statement – semicolons terminate statements. The comma operator has the lowest precedence of any C operator, and acts as a sequence point. In a combination of commas and semicolons, semicolons have lower precedence than commas, as semicolons separate statements but commas occur within statements, which accords with their use as ordinary punctuation: `a, b; c, d` is grouped as `(a, b); (c, d)` because these are two separate statements.
For reasons not explained, PATB used the semicolon to separate statements, rather than the already common colon . Other changes include the addition of a single numeric array, with the variable name , in addition to , and the use of for not-equals in comparisons, as opposed to . PATB used words for error messages instead of numbers. To reduce the amount of memory required, there were only three messages and they consisted of single words.
Shading is nowadays difficult to achieve with a ballpoint pen, a stylus or finger input for smart phones or tablet computers. The punctuation marks full stop, semicolon and comma are not used because they look like some brief forms of very frequent German words in Aufbauschrift (speed script and speech script) and could be confused with these words. These punctuation marks are replaced by different space intervals between the sentences and phrases.
Coordinated clause elements are separated by commas if no conjunction is used.AkH. 247. a) (A semicolon may be used to separate series of words whose elements are separated by commas.)AkH. 247. b) If a conjunction is used between coordinated clause elements, a comma is used before it,AkH. 247. c) except if the conjunction is one of the words és, s, meg 'and' or vagy 'or,' where the comma is omitted.
On June 22, Seventeen released their seventh EP Heng:garæ. This album is the group's best-selling album to date, having sold 1,000,000 copies in under a week. On October 19, Seventeen released their new special album Semicolon. The second special album made headlines before its release after it was reported that more than a million copies had been sold in pre-orders alone, the second of the group's albums to reach the one million mark.
In The Ecuador Reader (Carlos de la Torre & Steve Striffler, eds.), pp. 226-236. Duke University Press (2008). . During declamation, there is a pause between stanzas, as well as a pause between the fourth and fifth lines of each ten- line stanza. PThis is reflected in the structure of the poems as well: a transcription of a décima will invariably have a period or a semicolon at the Eend of the fourth line.
Historically, a sentence used to end with either a single bar। ("pūrna virāmam") or a double bar॥ ("dīrgha virāmam"); in handwriting, Telugu words were not separated by spaces. However, in modern times, English punctuation (commas, semicolon, etc.) has virtually replaced the old method of punctuation. Telugu has full-zero (anusvāra) ( ం ), half-zero (arthanusvāra or candrabindu) (ఁ) and visarga ( ః ) to convey various shades of nasal sounds. [la] and [La], [ra] and [Ra] are differentiated.
"The king is dead, long live the king!",The exact punctuation used when written varies from source to source, with the full stop on occasion being replaced by a semicolon, a colon, or a dash. or simply "long live the king!" is a traditional proclamation made following the accession of a new monarch in various countries. The seemingly contradictory phrase simultaneously announces the death of the previous monarch and assures the public of continuity by saluting the new monarch.
The first addition was string variables, along with changes to the `READ/DATA` statements to allow strings to be stored in them and the `INPUT` statement to read them in interactively. One feature of the string system was that trailing spaces were deliberately ignored in comparisons, so that "YES" and "YES " were considered equal. This was later realized to be a grave error. This version also added the semicolon to `PRINT` statements to do "close packing" of output.
Blank and comment lines are not counted. Logical SLOC (LSLOC)– Lines of code intended to measure "statements", which normally terminate by a semicolon (C/C++, Java, C#) or a carriage return (VB, Assembly), etc. Logical SLOC are not sensitive to format and style conventions, but they are language dependent. The Unified CodeCount(UCC) differencing capability allows the user to count, compare, and collect logical differentials between two versions of the source code of a software product.
SPL generally follows ALGOL 60 syntax conventions, and will be familiar to anyone with experience in ALGOL or its descendants, like Pascal and Modula-2. Like those languages, program statements can span multiple physical lines and end with a semicolon. Comments are denoted with the keyword, or by surrounding the comment text in << and >>. Statements are grouped into blocks using BEGIN and END, although, as in Pascal, the END of a program must be followed by a period.
Files that use the tab character instead of comma can be more precisely referred to as "TSV" for tab-separated values. Other implementation differences include handling of more commonplace field separators (such as space or semicolon) and newline characters inside text fields. One more subtlety is the interpretation of a blank line: it can equally be the result of writing a record of zero fields, or a record of one field of zero length; thus decoding it is ambiguous.
Starting in the 11th century, marks resembling the apostrophe and comma came into use. An apostrophe was used to mark an interrogative word, and a comma appeared at the end of an interrogative sentence. From the 12th century on, these were replaced with the semicolon (the Greek question mark). In the 18th century, Patriarch Anton I of Georgia reformed the system again, with commas, single dots, and double dots used to mark "complete", "incomplete", and "final" sentences, respectively.
Project Semicolonstylized as Project ;is an American nonprofit organization known for its advocacy of mental health wellness and its focus as an anti- suicide initiative. Founded in 2013, the movement's aim is "presenting hope and love to those who are struggling with depression, suicide, addiction, and self-injury". They are known for encouraging people to tattoo the punctuation mark semicolon (;) as a form of solidarity between people dealing with mental illness or the death of someone from suicide.

The entity must either be predefined (built into the markup language) or explicitly declared in a Document Type Definition (DTD). The format is the same as for any entity reference: :`&`name`;` where name is the case-sensitive name of the entity. The semicolon is required, unless marked otherwise in the table below (see ).
The Bourne sh lacked an expression grammar. The square bracketed condition had to be evaluated by the slower means of running the external test program. sh's `if` command took its argument words as a new command to be run as a child process. If the child exited with a zero return code, sh would look for a then clause (a separate statement, but often written joined on the same line with a semicolon) and run that nested block.
The semicolon occurs as a punctuation mark for better and clear organization of excessive and complicated complex sentences. Digraphs with irregular elements of diacritics are still used in hand-written texts. The first ideas of the National Revival were in so-called defences of the Czech language. The most likely first such work is Dissertatio apologenetica pro lingua Slavonica, praecipue Bohemica ("The defence of the Slavic language, of Czech in particular"), written in Latin by Bohuslav Balbín.
Ugalde was born in San Joaquín de Flores, Flores canton, Heredia province, Costa Rica, in October 1975. She attended primary and secondary school there, before studying communication at the University of Costa Rica. She has worked as a journalist in media like The Nation, The Free Press, Channel 7 (including on the program Blanco y Negro), and Central American Weekly. She has been producer, director and screenwriter of the literary program Semicolon of Channel 13, which began in 2008.
If chunk extensions are provided, the chunk size is terminated by a semicolon and followed by the parameters, each also delimited by semicolons. Each parameter is encoded as an extension name followed by an optional equal sign and value. These parameters could be used for a running message digest or digital signature, or to indicate an estimated transfer progress, for instance. The terminating chunk is a regular chunk, with the exception that its length is zero.
The Giving Keys has partnered with a Los Angeles-based non-profit called Chrysalis. Chrysalis helps The Giving Keys select appropriate jewelry makers from their client database. In addition to supporting formerly homeless populations via Chrysalis, PATH and United Way, The Giving Keys has partnered with various cause-based charities to help them raise funds. Partnerships have included Invisible Children, Project Semicolon 31 Bits, Keep A Breast, So Worth Loving, Able Made, Liberty in North Korea, Not for Sale, and Saving Innocence.
Some software supports the use of the number sign (#) as an alternative to the semicolon for indicating comments. However, it may be included in the key name. For instance, the following line creates a variable named "#var", but not one named "var"; this is sometimes used to create a pseudo-implementation of a comment. #var=a More generally, use of the number sign is unpredictable, as in these following lines (note the space after the number sign in the second line).
The full stop symbol derives from the Greek punctuation introduced by Aristophanes of Byzantium in the 3rd century . In his system, there were a series of dots whose placement determined their meaning. The full stop at the end of a completed thought or expression was marked by a high dot ⟨˙⟩, called the stigmḕ teleía () or "terminal dot". The "middle dot" ⟨·⟩, the stigmḕ mésē (), marked a division in a thought occasioning a longer breath (essentially a semicolon), while the low dot ⟨.
The ` ` is an escape sequence that C translates to a newline character, which on output signifies the end of the current line. The return value of the `printf` function is of type `int`, but it is silently discarded since it is not used. (A more careful program might test the return value to determine whether or not the `printf` function succeeded.) The semicolon `;` terminates the statement. The closing curly brace indicates the end of the code for the `main` function.
A member function can also be made "pure virtual" by appending it with = 0 after the closing parenthesis and before the semicolon. A class containing a pure virtual function is called an abstract class. Objects cannot be created from an abstract class; they can only be derived from. Any derived class inherits the virtual function as pure and must provide a non-pure definition of it (and all other pure virtual functions) before objects of the derived class can be created.
Features of the language C# (C Sharp), such as properties and interfaces, similarly enable no new functions, but are designed to make good programming practices more prominent and natural. Some programmers feel that these features are unimportant or even frivolous. For example, Alan Perlis once quipped, in a reference to bracket-delimited languages, that "syntactic sugar causes cancer of the semicolon" (see Epigrams on Programming). An extension of this is the syntactic saccharin, or gratuitous syntax that does not make programming easier.
Project Semicolon defines itself as "dedicated to presenting hope and love for those who are struggling with mental illness, suicide, addiction and self-injury", and "exists to encourage, love and inspire". While they are devoted to achieving lower suicide rates in the U.S. and worldwide, they do not themselves practice psychiatry, and the staff are not trained mental health professionals. Rather, they recommend contacting emergency hotlines (e.g. 9-1-1 or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline) or seeking mental health professionals.
A comma (or a colon, semicolon etc.) should be placed at the border of clauses whether or not there is a conjunction.AkH. 243. a) It also applies to cases when the clause begins with one of the conjunctions és, s, meg 'and' and vagy 'or'. However, it is sometimes difficult to assess whether the part joined with these conjunctions is a separate clause (because if it is not, no comma is needed). For example: Bevágta az ajtót, és dühösen elrohant.
In the 1930s, Otto Neugebauer introduced a modern notational system for Babylonian and Hellenistic numbers that substitutes modern decimal notation from 0 to 59 in each position, while using a semicolon (;) to separate the integral and fractional portions of the number and using a comma (,) to separate the positions within each portion. For example, the mean synodic month used by both Babylonian and Hellenistic astronomers and still used in the Hebrew calendar is 29;31,50,8,20 days. This notation is used in this article.
Quebec French has some typographical differences from European French. For example, in Quebec French, unlike European French, a full non-breaking space is not used before the semicolon, exclamation mark, or question mark. Instead, a thin space (which according to Le Ramat de la typographie normally measures a quarter of an em) is used; this thin space can be omitted in word-processing situations where the thin space is assumed to be unavailable, or when careful typography is not required.
A current fashion is to pair a sans-serif typeface for headings with a high-performance serif typeface of matching style for the text of an article. Typesetting conventions are modulated by orthography and linguistics, word structures, word frequencies, morphology, phonetic constructs and linguistic syntax. Typesetting conventions also are subject to specific cultural conventions. For example, in French it is customary to insert a non-breaking space before a colon (:) or semicolon (;) in a sentence, while in English it is not.
In a Makefile this would typically be done with the command: rm -rf classes/ `rm` is a Unix-specific command unavailable in some other environments. Microsoft Windows, for example, would use: rmdir /S /Q classes In an Ant build file the same goal would be accomplished using a built-in command: Additionally, Ant does not differentiate between forward slash or backslash for directories and semicolon or colon for path separators. It converts each to the symbol appropriate to the platform on which it executes.
By the 19th century, punctuation in the western world had evolved "to classify the marks hierarchically, in terms of weight". Cecil Hartley's poem identifies their relative values: The stop point out, with truth, the time of pause A sentence doth require at ev'ry clause. At ev'ry comma, stop while one you count; At semicolon, two is the amount; A colon doth require the time of three; The period four, as learned men agree. The use of punctuation was not standardised until after the invention of printing.
A more complex extended version of LCF notation was provided by Coxeter, Frucht, and Powers in later work. In particular, they introduced an "anti-palindromic" notation: if the second half of the numbers between the square brackets was the reverse of the first half, but with all the signs changed, then it was replaced by a semicolon and a dash. The Nauru graph satisfies this condition with [5, −9, 7, −7, 9, −5]4, and so can be written [5, −9, 7; −]4 in the extended notation.
The Wack Album is the third studio album by American comedy hip hop group The Lonely Island. Recorded in Los Angeles and New York City with producers including TODAY, DJ Nu-Mark and Asa Taccone, it was released on June 7, 2013 by Republic Records. The album reached number ten on the US Billboard 200 and topped the Comedy Albums and Rap Albums charts. "3-Way (The Golden Rule)", "YOLO", "Spring Break Anthem", "I Fucked My Aunt", "Diaper Money", "Semicolon", "Go Kindergarten" and "Spell It Out" were released as singles.
The story starts with a child, the narrator, suddenly waking up from sleep and finding that the handkerchief they had placed just beside them before sleeping has turned into a cat. They start talking to the cat, who speaks nonsensically about a handkerchief and a semicolon before disappearing over the hedge. The cat tells him to go find Kakeshwar, in a series of calculations that eventually tell him that he is in a tree. The child finds Kakeshwar doing mathematical calculations on a slate, that appears very unusual to the narrator.
In the early postwar period, next to his artistic activity he made scenes and decorations, and taught as an art teacher at the Gutenberg school. His studio was at the Röderbergweg in Frankfurt (near the Zoo) in the same house with his son's studio. In 1966 he opened a second studio in Bonn and in 1968 was a founder member of the artist group "semicolon" and a member of the Artist Group Bonn. Bayrle never wanted a retrospective of his work, so the great exhibition in 1980 showed mostly contemporary works.
To promote the album, the trio released music videos for each song each Wednesday ("Wack Wednesdays") leading up to its release. Among the music videos produced include "Diaper Money" (a trap song regarding adulthood, aging, and impending death), "Semicolon" (which spoofs the popularity of hashtag rap), and "Go Kindergarten". "Spring Break Anthem" juxtaposes raucous and irresponsible spring break behavior with descriptions of same-sex marriage. "We wanted to show just how ridiculous it is that spring break behavior is considered normal and gay marriage is insane when it's actually the opposite," said Schaffer.
In the months leading up to its publication, Lindbergh and his wife Anne labored over the galley proofs, leaving no detail unnoticed. Charles Scribner would later recall, "He would measure the difference between a semicolon and a colon to make sure each as what it ought to be. To him, every detail in the book has as much significance as if it were a moving part in the airplane." Just prior to publication, Lindbergh dedicated the book to his wife, "To A.M.L. Who will never realize how much of this book she has written".
HTFS, adopted as the primary filesystem for SCO OpenServer in 1995, supports file versioning. Versioning is enabled on a per-directory basis by setting the directory's setuid bit, which is inherited when subdirectories are created. If versioning is enabled, a new file version is created when a file or directory is removed, or when an existing file is opened with truncation. Non-current versions remain in the filesystem namespace, under the name of the original file but with a suffix attached consisting of a semicolon and version sequence number.
The idea behind the metric goes back to government employee John O'Hayre's 1966 manual, titled Gobbledygook Has Gotta Go. In his style manual, O'Hayre proposed a metric that considers shorter sentences and shorter words easier to read: in a 100-word sample, each one- syllable word (with the exception of some stop words) is worth one point, and each sentence (semicolon or period) is worth 3 points. The higher the score, the better. At some later point in time the metric was developed into a full Linsear Write Index.
Zoo archives can store multiple "generations" of a file; if files are added to an archive with the same pathname yet more recent date, if generations are enabled for the archive the older version(s) will be retained (with a semicolon and version number, similar to version numbers in the VMS and RT-11 operating systems) as the new file is added. This allows files that are frequently modified to be backed up in such a way as to allow access to previous versions (up to the version limit chosen) from one archive.
Items-- known as "bullet points"--may be short phrases, single sentences, or of paragraph length. Bulleted items are not usually terminated with a full stop unless they are complete sentences. In some cases, however, the style guide for a given publication may call for every item except the last one in each bulleted list to be terminated with a semicolon, and the last item with a full stop. It is correct to terminate any bullet point with a full stop if the text within that item consists of one full sentence or more.
The development of printing brought about the abandonment of many abbreviations, while it suggested and introduced new ones a process also favoured by the growth of ecclesiastical legislation, the creation of new offices, etc. There was less medieval abbreviation in the text of books much used on public occasions, e.g. missals, antiphonaries, Bibles; in one way or another the needs of students seem to have been the chief cause of the majority of medieval abbreviations. The means of abbreviation were usually full points or dots (mostly in Roman antiquity), the semicolon (eventually conventionalized), lines (horizontal, perpendicular, oblong, wavy curves, and commas).
For the purposes of the propositional calculus, propositions (utterances, sentences, assertions) are considered to be either simple or compound.Hamilton 1978:1 Compound propositions are considered to be linked by sentential connectives, some of the most common of which are "AND", "OR", "IF … THEN …", "NEITHER … NOR …", "… IS EQUIVALENT TO …" . The linking semicolon ";", and connective "BUT" are considered to be expressions of "AND". A sequence of discrete sentences are considered to be linked by "AND"s, and formal analysis applies a recursive "parenthesis rule" with respect to sequences of simple propositions (see more below about well-formed formulas).
This is the origin of the modern comma punctuation mark, and its name. For a longer passage (a kolon), a hypostigmḗ dot was placed level with the bottom of the text (.), similar to a modern colon or semicolon, and for very long pauses (periodos), a stigmḕ teleía point near the top of the line of text (·).Reading Before Punctuation — Introduction to Latin Literature handout, Haverford CollegeA History Of Punctuation As a lexicographer he compiled collections of archaic and unusual words. He died in Alexandria around 185–180 BC. His students included Callistratus, Aristarchus of Samothrace, and perhaps Agallis.
The gravy recipe is genuine – Kelly learnt it from his first father-in-law. It was covered by James Reyne on the 2003 tribute album, Stories of Me: A Songwriter's Tribute to Paul Kelly and on Reyne's 2005 acoustic album And the Horse You Rode in On. It has also been covered by David Miles, Luca Brasi, From Nowhere, Semicolon, Ghostwriters, Karl Broadie and Lawrence Agar. In September 2010, Kelly titled his memoirs, How to Make Gravy. On 29 September 2012 Kelly performed "How to Make Gravy" and "Leaps and Bounds" at the 2012 AFL Grand Final.

Christine Anu covered the song on her 2014 Christmas album, Island Christmas. Tasmanian band Luca Brasi covered the song in June 2016 for Triple J's Like a Version segment.
The command (abbreviation I) provides a conditional branch based on the sign of the expression. After the numeric expression, the IF command can take one to three line numbers. If the expression is less than zero, execution branches to the first line number; if equal to zero, to the second line number; if greater than zero, to the third line number. The language lacked relative operators such as greater than, equal or less than. To branch if X > 5, one must compare X - 5. 02.20 IF (25-25) 2.4,2.3,2.4 03.01 IF (X) 3.1,3.02,3.1 IF could be short-formed by placing a semicolon (or end of line) beyond the first line number.
A graph with attributes Various attributes can be applied to graphs, nodes and edges in DOT files. These attributes can control aspects such as color, shape, and line styles. For nodes and edges, one or more attribute–value pairs are placed in square brackets ([]) after a statement and before the semicolon (which is optional). Graph attributes are specified as direct attribute–value pairs under the graph element, where multiple attributes are separated by a comma or using multiple sets of square brackets, while node attributes are placed after a statement containing only the name of the node, but not the relations between the dots.
A run-on sentence consists of two or more independent clauses (i.e., clauses that have not been made dependent through the use of a relative pronoun or a subordinating conjunction) that are joined without appropriate punctuation: the clauses "run on"—into confusion rather than clarity, like intersecting streets without signs for Yield or Stop. The independent clauses can be "fused", as in "It is nearly half past five we cannot reach town before dark", in which case the two independent clauses might be separated (between "five" and "we") with a period [...five. We...], a comma and conjunction (...five, and we...), or a semicolon (...five; we...).
This increased speed led to the greater use and finally standardization of punctuation, which showed the relationships of words with each other: where one sentence ends and another begins, for example. The introduction of a standard system of punctuation has also been attributed to the Venetian printers Aldus Manutius and his grandson. They have been credited with popularizing the practice of ending sentences with the colon or full stop (period), inventing the semicolon, making occasional use of parentheses, and creating the modern comma by lowering the virgule. By 1566, Aldus Manutius the Younger was able to state that the main object of punctuation was the clarification of syntax.
The punctuation marks used to indicate sentence structure — the comma, period, colon, and semicolon — are the same in Yiddish as they are in English. The punctuation used for the abbreviation, contraction, and concatenation of words — the apostrophe and hyphen — are conceptually similar but typographically distinct in a manner that, yet again, can cause confusion when represented digitally. This can be illustrated with the contraction for (es iz = "it is"), which is (s'iz = "it's"). Although the Yiddish punctuation mark is termed an (apostrof) the character used to represent it is the Hebrew geresh, which differs both in its graphic appearance and, more importantly, in its digital representation.
On DOS, OS/2, and Windows operating systems, the `%PATH%` variable is specified as a list of one or more directory names separated by semicolon (`;`) characters.Microsoft.com, PATH command The Windows system directory (typically `C:\WINDOWS\system32`) is typically the first directory in the path, followed by many (but not all) of the directories for installed software packages. Many programs do not appear in the path as they are not designed to be executed from a command window, but rather from a Graphical User Interface. Some programs may add their directory to the front of the PATH variable's content during installation, to speed up the search process and/or override OS commands.
SBASIC also added a number of graphics commands intended to be used with plotters. This required the `PLOTTER "plottername"` to direct subsiquent commands to a selected device, and the `WINDOW...` to set up its parameters. From then on, `PLOT X,Y` would produce dots on the selected plotter, while adding the semicolon at the end of the statement, as used in `PRINT`, would leave the pen on the paper and produce a line, for instance `PLOT 10,10;20,20`. SBASIC formed the basis for ANSI BASIC, but that effort took so long that even Garland gave up on waiting for it to be approved, and in the early 1980s began teaching programming classes in Pascal instead.
Generally lexical grammars are context-free, or almost so, and thus require no looking back or ahead, or backtracking, which allows a simple, clean, and efficient implementation. This also allows simple one-way communication from lexer to parser, without needing any information flowing back to the lexer. There are exceptions, however. Simple examples include: semicolon insertion in Go, which requires looking back one token; concatenation of consecutive string literals in Python, which requires holding one token in a buffer before emitting it (to see if the next token is another string literal); and the off-side rule in Python, which requires maintaining a count of indent level (indeed, a stack of each indent level).
The Wack Album officially announced later during Saturday Night Live season 38, with a scheduled release of June in place. Shortly after the announcement, the group also detailed a promotional video series called "Wack Wednesdays", in which a new song from the album was to be released on Wednesday every week up until the album's release. The first song released as part of the series was "Spring Break Anthem", the video for which features an introductory segment in which actor Zach Galifianakis hosts a fictional talk show with guest James Franco. This was followed by "I Fucked My Aunt", featuring T-Pain; "Diaper Money"; "Semicolon", featuring Solange; "Go Kindergarten", featuring Robyn; and "Spell It Out".
The Parchive and rsync utilities are often preferred for verifying that a file has not been accidentally corrupted in transmission, since they can correct common small errors with a much shorter download. Despite the weaknesses of the SFV format, it is popular due to the relatively small amount of time taken by SFV utilities to calculate the CRC32 checksums when compared to the time taken to calculate cryptographic hashes such as MD5 or SHA-1. SFV uses a plain text file containing one line for each file and its checksum in the format FILENAMECHECKSUM. Any line starting with a semicolon ';' is considered to be a comment and is ignored for the purposes of file verification.
In early designs, some characters were produced by printing two symbols with the carriage in the same position. For instance, the exclamation point, which shares a key with the numeral 1 on post-mechanical keyboards, could be reproduced by using a three- stroke combination of an apostrophe, a backspace, and a period. A semicolon (;) was produced by printing a comma (,) over a colon (:). As the backspace key is slow in simple mechanical typewriters (the carriage was heavy and optimized to move in the opposite direction), a more professional approach was to block the carriage by pressing and holding the space bar while printing all characters that needed to be in a shared position.
This character set was devised by the now extinctLe codage informatique de l'écriture arabe : d'ASMO 449 à Unicode et ISO/CEI 10646 Arab Standardization and Metrology Organization in 1982 to be the 7-bit standard to be used in Arabic-speaking countries. The design of this character set is derived from the 7-bit ISO 646 (version of 1973) but with modifications suited for the Arabic language. In code points ranging from 0x41 to 0x72 (hexadecimal), Latin letters were replaced with Arabic letters. Punctuation marks which were identical in the Latin and Arabic scripts remained the same, but where they differed (comma, semicolon, question mark), the Latin ones were replaced by Arabic ones.
Intelligent code completion works using an automatically generated in-memory database of classes, variable names, and other constructs that the application being edited defines or references. The "classic" implementation of IntelliSense works by detecting marker characters such as periods, or other separator characters, depending on the language. When the user types one of these characters immediately after the name of an entity having one or more accessible members (such as contained variables or functions), IntelliSense suggests matches in a pop-up window. The user can either accept the suggestion by typing a statement completion character ( or )—or a language-specific marker (such as the semicolon for C++), or continue typing the name.
COM`) and `/E` (relocate environment above program) in order to minimize the driver's effectively resulting resident memory footprint. In batch mode, non- existent environment variables are replaced by a zero-length string. Standard environment variables or reserved environment variables include: ;`%APPEND%` (supported since DOS 3.3): This variable contains a semicolon-delimited list of directories in which to search for files. It is usually changed via the `APPEND /E` command, which also ensures that the directory names are converted into uppercase. Some DOS software actually expects the names to be stored in uppercase and the length of the list not to exceed 121 characters, therefore the variable is best not modified via the `SET` command.
For a simple quoted string literal, the evaluator needs to remove only the quotes, but the evaluator for an escaped string literal incorporates a lexer, which unescapes the escape sequences. For example, in the source code of a computer program, the string : might be converted into the following lexical token stream; whitespace is suppressed and special characters have no value: IDENTIFIER net_worth_future EQUALS OPEN_PARENTHESIS IDENTIFIER assets MINUS IDENTIFIER liabilities CLOSE_PARENTHESIS SEMICOLON Due to licensing restrictions of existing parsers, it may be necessary to write a lexer by hand. This is practical if the list of tokens is small, but in general, lexers are generated by automated tools. These tools generally accept regular expressions that describe the tokens allowed in the input stream.
SDS included a robust system for input/output based on "stream" numbers that could be specified in PRINT and INPUT statements. For instance, data could be read from a file using: 10 OPEN 'FILE1' TO :1,INPUT 20 INPUT :1,A The first lie opens a disk file with the name "FILE1", assigns it to stream 1, and indicates it will be used for input. The second line reads the next data from stream 1, in this case the first value, and assigns the resulting data to variable A. The system also included a unique "key" system that allowed data to be numbered and then accessed randomly. This was accomplished by adding the key number after a semicolon: INPUT :1;9999,A will attempt to read record 9999.
Green Pond Marsh designated as Important Bird Area by Pennsylvania Audubon on March 30, 2014The Green Pond area was part of a 5000-acre (2023 hectare) tract owned by Leticia Aubrey, daughter of William Penn. A work published by the Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Society in 1937, "The Penn Patents in the Forks of the Delaware", contains a map called the "Drylands Tract" showing a semicolon-shaped pond at the point where five parcels deeded to (from northeast corner of pond moving clockwise) John Buss, Jacob Bunstein, George Hartzell, Frederick King et al., and Conrad Kocher. At the time of the property transfer, Fritts stated that the settlers found "unbroken forest" around what was then named "Dry Lands Pond".
In Perl, the `eval` function is something of a hybrid between an expression evaluator and a statement executor. It returns the result of the last expression evaluated (all statements are expressions in Perl programming), and allows the final semicolon to be left off. Example as an expression evaluator: $foo = 2; print eval('$foo + 2'), " "; Example as a statement executor: $foo = 2; eval('$foo += 2; print "$foo ";'); Perl also has `eval` blocks, which serves as its exception handling mechanism (see Exception handling syntax#Perl). This differs from the above use of `eval` with strings in that code inside `eval` blocks is interpreted at compile-time instead of run-time, so it is not the meaning of `eval` used in this article.
Rutter and Jennings gave the correct response of Chicago, but Watson's response was "What is Toronto?????" with five question marks appended indicating a lack of confidence. Ferrucci offered reasons why Watson would appear to have guessed a Canadian city: categories only weakly suggest the type of response desired, the phrase "U.S. city" did not appear in the question, there are cities named Toronto in the U.S., and Toronto in Ontario has an American League baseball team. Dr. Chris Welty, who also worked on Watson, suggested that it may not have been able to correctly parse the second part of the clue, "its second largest, for a World War II battle" (which was not a standalone clause despite it following a semicolon, and required context to understand that it was referring to a second-largest airport).
Greek keyboard layout in comparison to US layout The usual Greek layout follows the US layout for letters related to Latin letters (ABDEHIKLMNOPRSTXYZ, ΑΒΔΕΗΙΚΛΜΝΟΠΡΣΤΧΥΖ, respectively), substitutes phonetically similar letters (Φ at F; Γ at G) and uses the remaining slots for the remaining Greek letters: Ξ at J; Ψ at C; Ω at V; Θ at U). Greek has two fewer letters than English, but has two accents which, because of their frequency, are placed on the home row at the U.K. ";" position; they are dead keys. Word-final sigma has its own position as well, replacing W, and semicolon (which is used as a question mark in Greek) and colon move to the position of Q. The Greek Polytonic layout has various dead keys to input the accented letters. There is also the Greek 220 layout and the Greek 319 layout.
Marbury had argued that the language of Section 13 of the Judiciary Act gave the Supreme Court the authority to issue writs of mandamus when hearing cases under original jurisdiction, not just appellate jurisdiction. Although the language on the power to issue writs of mandamus appears with the sentence on appellate jurisdiction, rather than with the earlier sentences on original jurisdiction, a semicolon separates it from the specific clause on appellate jurisdiction. The section itself does not make clear whether the mandamus clause was intended to be read as part of the appellate sentence or on its ownin the opinion, Marshall quoted only the end of the sectionand the law's wording can plausibly be read either way. In the end, Marshall agreed with Marbury, and interpreted section 13 of the Judiciary Act to authorize mandamus on original jurisdiction.
A section of proofread text, with a dele in the left margin indicating the stricken text ("and other,") is to be deleted. (The marks in the right margin mean, from left to right and top to bottom: replace stricken slash with one en dash; insert semicolon; insert comma; and transpose circled text.)The dele is used in proofreading and copy editing, where it may be written over the selected text itself (such that it often resembles a stretched cursive e), or in the margin alongside the selected text, which is usually struck through with a line. The stricken text or the dele itself may be framed by top and bottom curved brackets, as in the above example, to indicate that the space left after deletion is to be closed up. As the need for such closing up can usually be inferred by context, however, the brackets are often omitted.
Assembly language for the 8086 family provides the mnemonic MOV (an abbreviation of move) for instructions such as this, so the machine code above can be written as follows in assembly language, complete with an explanatory comment if required, after the semicolon. This is much easier to read and to remember. MOV AL, 61h ; Load AL with 97 decimal (61 hex) In some assembly languages (including this one) the same mnemonic, such as MOV, may be used for a family of related instructions for loading, copying and moving data, whether these are immediate values, values in registers, or memory locations pointed to by values in registers or by immediate (a/k/a direct) addresses. Other assemblers may use separate opcode mnemonics such as L for "move memory to register", ST for "move register to memory", LR for "move register to register", MVI for "move immediate operand to memory", etc.
Comma splices are rare in most published writing but are common among inexperienced writers of English. The original 1918 edition of The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr. advises using a semicolon, not a comma, to join two grammatically complete clauses, except when the clauses are "very short" and "similar in form", for example: Comma splices are similar to run-on sentences, which join two independent clauses without any punctuation and without a coordinating conjunction such as and, but for, etc. Sometimes the two types of sentences are treated differently based on the presence or absence of a comma, but most writers consider the comma splice as a special type of run-on sentence. According to Garner's Modern English Usage: Comma splices often arise when writers use conjunctive adverbs (such as furthermore, however, or moreover) to separate two independent clauses instead of using a coordinating conjunction.
Mixed radix numeral systems are non-standard positional numeral systems in which the numerical base varies from position to position. Such numerical representation applies when a quantity is expressed using a sequence of units that are each a multiple of the next smaller one, but not by the same factor. Such units are common for instance in measuring time; a time of 32 weeks, 5 days, 7 hours, 45 minutes, 15 seconds, and 500 milliseconds might be expressed as a number of minutes in mixed-radix notation as: ... 32, 5, 7, 45; 15, 500 ... ∞, 7, 24, 60; 60, 1000 or as :32∞577244560.15605001000 In the tabular format, the digits are written above their base, and a semicolon indicates the radix point. In numeral format, each digit has its associated base attached as a subscript, and the radix point is marked by a full stop or period.
In order to make an hour of timecode match an hour on the clock, drop-frame timecode skips frame numbers 0 and 1 of the first second of every minute, except when the number of minutes is divisible by ten. This causes timecode to skip 18 frames each ten minutes (18,000 frames @ 30 frame/s) and almost perfectly compensates for the difference in rate. For example, the sequence when frame counts are dropped: :01:08:59:28 :01:08:59:29 :01:09:00:02 :01:09:00:03 For each tenth minute :01:09:59:28 :01:09:59:29 :01:10:00:00 :01:10:00:01 While non-drop timecode is displayed with colons separating the digit pairs—"HH:MM:SS:FF"—drop-frame is usually represented with a semicolon (;) or period (.) as the divider between all the digit pairs—"HH;MM;SS;FF", "HH.MM.SS.FF"—or just between the seconds and frames—"HH:MM:SS;FF" or "HH:MM:SS.FF".
On August 17, that version was read into the Journal: In late August 1789, the House debated and modified the Second Amendment. These debates revolved primarily around risk of "mal-administration of the government" using the "religiously scrupulous" clause to destroy the militia as Great Britain had attempted to destroy the militia at the commencement of the American Revolution. These concerns were addressed by modifying the final clause, and on August 24, the House sent the following version to the Senate: The next day, August 25, the Senate received the amendment from the House and entered it into the Senate Journal. However, the Senate scribe added a comma before "shall not be infringed" and changed the semicolon separating that phrase from the religious exemption portion to a comma: By this time, the proposed right to keep and bear arms was in a separate amendment, instead of being in a single amendment together with other proposed rights such as the due process right.
Title on autograph score: Concerto 3zo a tre Violini, tre Viole, è tre Violoncelli col Basso per il Cembalo. Instrumentation: three violins, three violas, three cellos, and harpsichord (as basso continuo) Duration: about 10 minutes The second movement consists of a single measure with the two chords that make up a 'Phrygian half cadence'wikt:Phrygian cadence and—although there is no direct evidence to support it—it was likely that these chords are meant to surround or follow a cadenza improvised by a harpsichord or violin player. Modern performance approaches range from simply playing the cadence with minimal ornamentation (treating it as a sort of "musical semicolon"), to inserting movements from other works, to cadenzas varying in length from under a minute to over two minutes. Wendy Carlos's three electronic performances (from Switched-On Bach, Switched-On Brandenburgs, and Switched-On Bach 2000) have second movements that are completely different from each other.
Writing a review for the website PopMatters, Neil Kelly described the lyrical style of The Wack Album as being based on "quotable trash-talkin' lyrics, frequent profane comedic diamonds and straight-up gangsta flow"; he describes group member Andy Samberg as "the master of comedic cultural criticism, dropping honest views of social trends in the modern world innocuously amidst fart jokes and gangsta beats", and claims that a number of songs pay homage to hits of the hip hop genre, including the Snoop Dogg-influenced "Perfect Saturday". The group is said to adopt a "nerdy-outsider persona" on multiple tracks, namely "I Don't Give a Honk" and "We Need Love". Despite the comedic nature of their lyrics, some songs are claimed to be serious in message, including the gay marriage-related "Spring Break Anthem". Writing a review for AbsolutePunk, Cody Nelson summarised the lyrics of a number of the album's songs; for example, "Go Kindergarten" is described as "a one-upping take on songs that feature lyrics directing people in the club", and "Semicolon" is said to be a parody of the setup and punchline format of many hip hop songs.
