It can be an ambiguous conversation starter, but there is no denying that each team's New Era caps are clearly part of the same league.
One of the universal emblems of the art of comics is the use of a single punctuation mark to depict a character's emotions, much more efficiently than any possible sentence. A speech bubble with a single big question mark (?) (often drawn by hand, not counted as part of the lettering) denotes confusion or ignorance. An exclamation mark (!) indicates surprise or terror. This device is broadly used in the European comic tradition, the Belgian artist Hergé's The Adventures of Tintin series being a good example.
This is unlike the original versions, which utilized both Mitsuru and the members of the band day after tomorrow. As for the new version of "Ninin Sankyaku," Atsushi Sato, best known by his stage name "ats-", from the band HΛL performed the music. The original piece was performed by the indie rock band PLECTRUM. The two new tracks on the EP, "Junction Punctuation Mark" and "61 Byoume no... Fura Letter Saigo no Hatsukoi ~Copernicus Tekitenkai~," were written by misono herself, both musically and lyrically.
The nritta performance starts off with a thàth sequence, which is a slower graceful movement of wrists, neck and eyebrows. Thereafter, the dancer gradually increases speed and energy, while completing a sequence of bol (mnemonic syllables in Indian tradition). Each bol has short sections, similar to technical exercises in western dance traditions, wherein the dancer engages the audience with tora, tukra, parhant, paran and others stressing footwork, gestures and turns. Each section when completed has a punctuation mark, usually a sharp turn of the head.
Based on comparative stylistic analysis, the inscription is dated as being carved between 970 to 1020 CE. The text on DR 289 indicates that the stone was raised by a man named either Fraði or Freði as a memorial to an in- law named Ólafr. Similar to the text of DR 288, the deceased is described as being dræng harþa goþan meaning a "very good valiant man" and uses the same term drengr. The text also uses an × punctuation mark as a word divider.
The full stop' (Commonwealth English), period (North American English) or full point ' is a punctuation mark. It is used for several purposes, most often to mark the end of a declarative sentence (as opposed to a question or exclamation); this sentence-terminal use, alone, defines the strictest sense of full stop. The mark is also often used, singly, to indicate omitted characters, or in an ellipsis, , to indicate omitted words. It may be placed after an initial letter used to stand for a name, or after each individual letter in an initialism or acronym (e.g.
The dash is a punctuation mark that is similar in appearance to the hyphen and minus sign but differs from these symbols in length and, in some fonts, height above the baseline. The most common versions of the dash are the endash , longer than the hyphen; the emdash , longer than the en dash; and the horizontalbar , whose length varies across typefaces but tends to be between those of the en and em dashes. Historically, the names of endash and emdash came from the width of an uppercase and uppercase , respectively, in commonly used fonts.
Formal transliterations often include a punctuation mark (') or special character () for the ayn but this is omitted by Urdu speakers such as in the context of the annual International Women's Day. Adding the special characters makes it harder to type and would cause things such as twitter hashtags to break. The discussion on social media about these events is often in informal Romanised Urdu, with frequent code switching between Urdu and English, but the handwritten or expertly typeset signs at the events are mostly in either English, Urdu in the traditional script, or local languages.
"στίγμα" It had an earlier writing-related special meaning, being the name for a dot as a punctuation mark, used for instance to mark shortness of a syllable in the notation of rhythm. It was then co-opted as a name specifically for the στ ligature, evidently because of the acrophonic value of its initial st- as well as the analogy with the name of sigma. Other names coined according to the same analogical principle are stiSamuel Brown Wylie, An introduction to the knowledge of Greek grammar (1838), p. 10. or stau.
He is also noted for the consistency of his use of the punctuation mark × between the words of the runic inscription, and this mark is used to separate the words in the text on this stone. Due to the unusual imagery of the inscription, assumed to be from an earlier time period, it has been suggested that Fot used earlier carved imagery to add his new runic text to. This runestone is classified as being carved in runestone style RAK.Project Samnordisk Runtextdatabas Svensk - Rundata entry for U 678.
This lengthening, which was an afterthought, is tantamount to writing a stronger punctuation mark. As the music progresses, we can hear in the melody of the second theme, for example (or later, in the pairs of antiphonal chords of woodwinds and strings (i.e. chords that alternate between woodwind and string instruments)), that the constantly invoked connection between the two four- note units is crucial to the movement." Steinberg states that the "...source of Beethoven's unparalleled energy...is in his writing long sentences and broad paragraphs whose surfaces are articulated with exciting activity.
The device was made by linking two 28-key piano- style keyboards by wire. Each piano key represented a letter of the alphabet and when pressed caused the corresponding letter to print at the receiving end. A "shift" key allowed an alternative character to be assigned to each key, for example a digit or punctuation mark instead of a letter. A 56-character typewheel at the sending end was synchronised to run at the same speed and to maintain the same angular position as a similar wheel at the receiving end.
The literary effect of this was to create separation between each paragraph, reinforcing the stream of consciousness style of the text. American essayist and cultural critic H.L. Mencken, often credited with having first coined the aphorism, "When you point one finger, there are three fingers pointing back to you," is also reported to have used this symbol to convey this sentiment in shorthand, seen first in his telegrams as early as the 1920s. Thomas Pynchon parodies this punctuation mark in his novel Gravity's Rainbow by depicting a middle finger, rather than an index finger, pointing at a line of text.
If a > standard word space is inserted after a full point or a comma, then, > optically, this produces a space of up to 50% wider than that of other word > spaces within a line of type. This is because these punctuation marks carry > space above them, which, when added to the adjacent standard word spaces, > combines to create a visually larger space. Some argue that the "additional" > space after a comma and full point serves as a "pause signal" for the > reader. But this is unnecessary (and visually disruptive) since the pause > signal is provided by the punctuation mark itself.
An interpunct, , also known as an interpoint, middle dot, middot and centered dot or centred dot, is a punctuation mark consisting of a vertically centered dot used for interword separation in ancient Latin script. (Word-separating spaces did not appear until some time between 600 and 800CE). It appears in a variety of uses in some modern languages and is present in Unicode as code point . The multiplication dot (also known as the dot operator; ), which is frequently used in mathematical and scientific notation, has an appearance similar to the interpunct, but its exact shape and spacing may differ.
" In response to Truss, Ben Macintyre, a columnist in The Times, wrote: "Americans have long regarded the semi-colon with suspicion, as a genteel, self-conscious, neither-one-thing- nor-the other sort of punctuation mark, with neither the butchness of a full colon nor the flighty promiscuity of the comma. Hemingway, Chandler and Stephen King wouldn’t be seen dead in a ditch with a semi-colon (though Truman Capote might). Real men, goes the unwritten rule of American punctuation, don’t use semi-colons." In his book titled A Man Without a Country, Kurt Vonnegut writes: "Semicolons are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing.
The inscription was carved by a runemaster who used the signature Fasti, with the runes for his signature line fasti risti runaʀ or "Fasti carved the runes" located outside of the serpent near its leg. Based on stylistic analysis, this runemaster is believed to have also created the nearby but now-lost runestone U 170 in Bogesund, where the runemaster's signature was recorded as being Fastulfr. As such, Fasti may be a nickname. On U 171, the runemaster used a word divider punctuation mark consisting of a single dot between each word that was carved on the serpent.
This is the origin of the modern comma punctuation mark, and its name. For a longer passage (a kolon), a hypostigmḗ dot was placed level with the bottom of the text (.), similar to a modern colon or semicolon, and for very long pauses (periodos), a stigmḕ teleía point near the top of the line of text (·).Reading Before Punctuation — Introduction to Latin Literature handout, Haverford CollegeA History Of Punctuation As a lexicographer he compiled collections of archaic and unusual words. He died in Alexandria around 185–180 BC. His students included Callistratus, Aristarchus of Samothrace, and perhaps Agallis.
Originally located near the church at Bjäresjö, the stone was first moved to Ruthsbo, which is about five kilometers west of Ystad, and then to the Marvinsholm Park. In 1913 it was moved to the grounds of the Kulturen, a museum in Lund. Based upon comparative stylistic analysis, the inscription is dated as being carved between 970 and 1020 CE. The runic text states that a man named Áki raised the stone as a memorial to his brother Ulfr. Similar to the Bjäresjö 1 inscription, the runemaster on DR 288 used an × punctuation mark as a word divider.
In practice, this rule is more often than not ignored, and the acronyms spelled either way. Abbreviations that are truncations of a single word, consisting of the first letter or first several letters of that word (as opposed to acronyms formed from initials or truncations of more than one word) are denoted using the punctuation mark geresh () by placing the sign after the last letter of the abbreviation (e.g. "Ms.": ""). However, in practice, single and double quotes are often used instead of the special punctuation marks (for which most keyboards do not have keys), with the single quote used both in acronyms and abbreviations.
One scholar has suggested that the image of the ship may have been a type of heraldic badge or symbol of the guild that raised the stone. The name Drengr is a bit unusual as it normally is a title associated with warriors or merchants. However, there are several examples from Scandinavia in which an Old Norse word that is a designation of status has become a personal name. In the inscription, each word in the runic text is separated with a punctuation mark consisting of two dots except for the name Drengr, which has been emphasized by using a different word divider consisting of a single dot. p. 469.
Following the games, the songs "Starry Heavens," "Soshite Boku ni Dekiru Koto" and "Ninin Sankyaku" were remastered for the 2013 release. Along with the remastering of previous songs, the EP contained two new tracks: "Junction Punctuation Mark" and "61 Byoume no... Fura Letter Saigo no Hatsukoi ~Copernicus Tekitenkai~" (61秒目の...フラLetter最後の初恋〜コペルニクス的転回〜 / 61st second... fluttering Letter the last first love ~Copernicus Turning~). Both tracks received music videos on the accompanying DVD. For the remasters of "Starry Heavens" and "Soshite Boku ni Dekiru Koto," Mitsuru Igarashi from the group Every Little Thing performed the instrumentals.
In Chinese, the underline is a punctuation mark for proper names (; pinyin: zhuānmínghào; literally "proper name mark", used for personal and geographic names). Its meaning is somewhat akin to capitalization in English and should never be used for emphasis even if the influence of English computing makes the latter sometimes occur. A wavy underline (; pinyin: shūmínghào; literally, " book title mark") serves a similar function, but marks names of literary works instead of proper names. In the case of two or more adjacent proper names, each individual proper name is separately underlined so there should be a slight gap between the underlining of each proper name.
The punctuation marks used to indicate sentence structure — the comma, period, colon, and semicolon — are the same in Yiddish as they are in English. The punctuation used for the abbreviation, contraction, and concatenation of words — the apostrophe and hyphen — are conceptually similar but typographically distinct in a manner that, yet again, can cause confusion when represented digitally. This can be illustrated with the contraction for (es iz = "it is"), which is (s'iz = "it's"). Although the Yiddish punctuation mark is termed an (apostrof) the character used to represent it is the Hebrew geresh, which differs both in its graphic appearance and, more importantly, in its digital representation.
Popular design is a type of Japanese paper used for writing. It is printed with squares, typically 200 or 400 per sheet, each square designed to accommodate a single Japanese character or punctuation mark. Genkō yōshi may be used with any type of writing instrument (pencil, pen or ink brush), and with or without a shitajiki (protective "under-sheet"). While in the past genkō yōshi was used for all types of manuscript writing (essays, creative writing, news writing and so on), in most cases the advent of the computer means that this is now the preferred medium, although some Japanese word processing software still includes a genkō yōshi template.
No agreed-upon method for indicating irony in written text exists, though many ideas have been suggested. For instance, an irony punctuation mark was proposed in the 1580s, when Henry Denham introduced a rhetorical question mark or percontation point, which resembles a reversed question mark. This mark was also advocated by the French poet Marcel Bernhardt at the end of the 19th century, to indicate irony or sarcasm. French writer Hervé Bazin suggested another pointe d'ironie: the Greek letter psi with a dot below it, while Tom Driberg recommended that ironic statements should be printed in italics that lean the other way from conventional italics.
The animal heads are typically seen in profile with slender almond-shaped eyes and upwardly curled appendages on the noses and the necks. Fot is prominent among the known runemasters as the leading representative of the classic Uppland or Urnes runestone style, and has been called the most artistic of the runemasters of that time. A salient trait is the care with which he chose the stones, how he treated the surface of them, the harmonious ornamentation and the evenly chiseled and firmly designed runes. He is also noted for the consistency of his use of the punctuation mark × between the words in his runic inscriptions.
It is acceptable in Spanish to begin a sentence with an opening inverted exclamation mark ("¡") and end it with a question mark ("?"), or vice versa, for statements that are questions but also have a clear sense of exclamation or surprise such as: ("And who do you think you are?!"). Normally, four signs are used, always with one type in the outer side and the other in the inner side (nested) (', 'RAE's ) Unicode 5.1 also includes , which is an inverted version of the interrobang (also known as a "gnaborretni"Interrobang spelled backwards. ()), a nonstandard punctuation mark used to denote both excitement and a question in just one glyph.
Foreign journalist Harry Hamm was told by Albanian functionaries that "Belishova and Tashko had never made any secret of their pro–Soviet leanings, and that they had maintained their attitude long after the decision had been made to move closer to Peking's general line. Their stubborn attitude was bound to lead to their expulsion from the Party and to their being relieved of all their offices." Tashko, asked to speak on his own behalf, had his text prepared beforehand by the Soviet embassy and, having gotten confused, accidentally read the punctuation mark for a full stop in Russian amid a burst of laughter from those present. Both Belishova and Tashko were expelled from the Party in September.
In 2008, it modified its position on sentence spacing to the following: > In an earlier era, writers using a typewriter commonly left two spaces after > a period, a question mark, or an exclamation point. In addition, some publishers' > guidelines for preparing a manuscript's electronic files ask professional > authors to type only the spaces that are to appear in print.
It is notable not only for its short inscription, which is the name Hærulf, but for having been taken to Berlin as war booty in 1864. It was not until 1952 that the stone was returned to Denmark near to its original location. Although the inscription only has a single word, a single dot, which is normally a punctuation mark used as a word divider, has been placed before and after the runes hairulfʀ for the name Hærulf. This name is a shortened form of the Proto-Norse name Hariwulfa or Hariwulfʀ, which means either "Warrior-Wolf" or "War Host-Wolf," that is attested to on the Istaby and Stentoften Runestones. p. 584-85.
Typesetters who are unfamiliar with Unicode frequently use an apostrophe instead, but that can cause problems in electronic files because the apostrophe is a punctuation mark, not a word- building character, and the ambiguous use of apostrophe for two different functions can make automated processing of the text difficult. The lowercase saltillo letter is used in Miꞌkmaq of Canada, Izere of Nigeria and in at least one Southeast Asian language, Central Sinama of the Philippines and Malaysia. In the latter it represents both the glottal stop and the centralized vowel and derives from the historical use of hamza for those sounds in Arabic script. Examples are bowaꞌ 'mouth' as a consonant and nsꞌllan 'oil' as a vowel.
This layer has been dated at 66.043 Ma. A 140 Ma age for the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary instead of the usually accepted 145 Ma was proposed in 2014 based on a stratigraphic study of Vaca Muerta Formation in Neuquén Basin, Argentina. Víctor Ramos, one of the authors of the study proposing the 140 Ma boundary age, sees the study as a "first step" toward formally changing the age in the International Union of Geological Sciences. At the end of the Cretaceous, the impact of a large body with the Earth may have been the punctuation mark at the end of a progressive decline in biodiversity during the Maastrichtian Age. The result was the extinction of three-quarters of Earth's plant and animal species.
" Instead of periods, some poems end with an ellipsis; others have no terminal punctuation at all. The colon is an Ammons "signature"; he uses it "as an all-purpose punctuation mark." According to critic Stephanie Burt, in many poems Ammons combines three types of diction: Such a mixture is nearly unique, Burt says; these three modes are "almost never found together outside his poems". In contrast, critic J. Mark Smith notes that in long poems such as Garbage, with their "improvised, no-stopping, 'one-time event' compositional procedures," "Ammons works with a continuum of utterance whose central furrows are the most frequently repeated words and phrases in the contemporary American vulgate, but whose far outcastings register the faintest traces of anomalous use.
The Västra Strö 2 Runestone consists of runic text in an arch that is classified as being carved in runestone style RAK, which is considered to be the oldest classification. This is the classification for inscriptions that have straight text band ends without any attached serpent or beast heads. Each word in the runic text is separated by a two dot word divider punctuation mark. Runic inscriptions are often dated based upon comparative linguistic and stylistic analysis, and the inscription on DR 335 has been dated to approximately the period of 960 to 1050 C.E. The runic text states that Faðir raised the stone as a memorial to Bjôrn, with whom he owned a ship, and Faðir likely created the Västra Strö Monument.
The name Kárr was often combined with that of Odin in Óðinkárr, and appears in a possible cultic initiate reference in the names on inscriptions on DR 4 in Hedeby, DR 81 in Skjern, DR 133 in Skivum, and DR 239 in Gørlev. The name Kárr is used on Vg 56 in Källby, which depicts a figure possibly in cultic attire. Kárr is also used without necessarily any cultic reference in inscriptions Sm 90 in Torshag, Sö 128 in Lids, U 643 and U 644 in Ekilla bro, U 654 in Varpsund, and U 792 in Ulunda, with U 644 and U 654 referring to the same person. The anonymous runemaster used a punctuation mark to divide each word in the runic text.
Over fifteen other runestones have been attributed to him. The other inscriptions listed in Rundata that are attributed to Halvdan based upon stylistic analysis include Sö 235 in Västerby, Sö 237 in Fors, Sö 239 in Häringe, Sö 244 in Tuna, Sö 245 in Tungelsta, the now-lost Sö 247 in Ålsta, Sö 252 in Säby, Sö 256 in Älby, Sö 262 in Blista, Sö 269 in Söderby Malm, Sö 272 in Upp-Norrby, Sö 274 in Södersluss, Sö 290 in Farsta, Sö 292 in Bröta, Sö 297 in Uppinge, Sö 298 in Uringe Malm, and Sö 301 in Ågesta Bro.Project Samnordisk Runtextdatabas Svensk - Rundata. In most of his inscriptions, Halvdan used a punctuation mark to separate each word in the runic text.
Chosen Realm is noted as a "menacing" plot and notes how there is a threat to Archer and the crew of Enterprise. The Literary Galaxy of Star Trek: An Analysis of References and Themes in the Television Series and Films by James F. Broderick, 2006 (Page 151) Researching here and here will sample the many reviews that note how this episode completely steals/copies the ending of the TOS episode Let That Be Your Last Battlefield, with Bureau42 noting the simple switch of "using religion instead of racism". Jammer discusses how Season 3 has taken on the habit of grabbing action/fighting sequences to drive the climax of episodes. So the absurd taking control of the Enterprise again by aliens provides an opportunity for "the action climax ... to become a predictable punctuation mark".
A middot may be used as a consonant or modifier letter, rather than as punctuation, in transcription systems and in language orthographies. For such uses Unicode provides the code point .Some discussion of the inappropriateness of a punctuation mark for such use, as well as the near equivalence of the triangular half colon, can be found here: Bibiko, Hans-Jörg (2010-04-07), On the proposed U+A78F LATIN LETTER MIDDLE DOT Hill, Nathan (2010-04-14), Latin letter middle dot In the Sinological tradition of the 36 initials, the onset 影 (typically reconstructed as a glottal stop) may be transliterated with a middot , and the onset 喩 (typically reconstructed as a null onset) with an apostrophe . Conventions vary, however, and it is common for 影 to be transliterated with the apostrophe.
Until this point, many of the designs considered to be early emoticons were created using fairly basic punctuation, using a single punctuation mark instead of a word or to express feeling, before individuals started combining two punctuations (often a colon and bracket) to create something that resembled a smiling face. Scott Fahlman is considered to be the first person to create the first true emoticon as he began to experiment with using multiple punctuation marks to display emotion and replace language. He is the first documented person to use a complex emoticon of three or more punctuation marks, with `:-)` and `:-(` with a specific suggestion that they be used to express emotion. Not only did Fahlman create two different emoticons, he also said with the emoticons that they could be used to express emotion.
The prevailing style in the United Kingdom called British style, logical quotation, and logical punctuation is to include within quotation marks only those punctuation marks that appeared in the original quoted material and in which the punctuation mark fits with the sense of the quotation, but otherwise to place punctuation outside the closing quotation marks. Fowler's A Dictionary of Modern English Usage provides an early example of the rule: "All signs of punctuation used with words in quotation marks must be placed according to the sense." Emphasis in original. When dealing with words-as-words, short-form works and sentence fragments, this style places periods and commas outside the quotation marks: When dealing with direct speech, British placement depends on whether or not the quoted statement is complete or a fragment.
From the word order, it is unclear if the voyage was for a man named Runi, or if Runa is a name starting a new sentence. At one time, it was suggested that Runa referred to an island in Estonia, but later scholars have dismissed this suggestion for lack of convincing evidence. That Runa is a personal name is supported by similar examples found on inscriptions such as the now-lost U 790 in Mälby, U 957 in Vedyxa, Sö 383 in Linga, and possibly U 1003 in Frötuna. p. 239. The runemaster used a punctuation mark to separate each word of the text, and used a bind rune or ligature to combine the s-rune and i-rune in the word sinn. Vs 22 is the only inscription in Västmanland in which a bind rune was used.
Based on stylistic analysis, this inscription has been attributed to a runemaster named Halvdan, who is known for his Pr3 style inscriptions and signed inscription Sö 270 in Tyresta. Over fifteen other runestones have been attributed to him. The other inscriptions listed in Rundata that are attributed to Halvdan based upon stylistic analysis include Sö 235 in Västerby, Sö 237 in Fors, Sö 239 in Häringe, Sö 244 in Tuna, Sö 245 in Tungelsta, the now-lost Sö 247 in Ålsta, Sö 252 in Säby, Sö 256 in Älby, Sö 262 in Blista, Sö 269 in Söderby Malm, Sö 272 in Upp-Norrby, Sö 274 in Södersluss, Sö 290 in Farsta, Sö 297 in Uppinge, Sö 298 in Uringe Malm, and Sö 301 in Ågesta Bro. In this inscription, Halvdan used a + as a punctuation mark between each word of the runic text.
The Straight Dope on the question mark (link down) Over the next three centuries this pitch-defining element (if it ever existed) seems to have been forgotten, so that the Alcuinesque stroke-over-dot sign (with the stroke sometimes slightly curved) is often seen indifferently at the end of clauses, whether they embody a question or not. In the early 13th century, when the growth of communities of scholars (universities) in Paris and other major cities led to an expansion and streamlining of the book- production trade,De Hamel, Christopher History of Illuminated Manuscripts, 1997 punctuation was rationalized by assigning Alcuin's stroke-over-dot specifically to interrogatives; by this time the stroke was more sharply curved and can easily be recognized as the modern question mark. According to a 2011 discovery by Chip Coakley, a Cambridge University manuscript expert, Syriac was the first language to use a punctuation mark to indicate an interrogative sentence. The Syriac question mark, known as the zagwa elaya ("upper pair") has the form of a vertical double dot over a word.
The runic text indicates that the stone was raised by Holmsteinn in memory of his wife Tíðfríðr and of himself. There are over twenty other runestones where the sponsor of the stone stated that the stone was raised in memory of himself, including Sö 55 in Bjudby, U 127 in Danderyds, the now-lost U 149 in Hagby, U 164 and U 165 in Täby, U 171 in Söderby, U 194 in Väsby, U 212 in Vallentuna, U 261 in Fresta, U 308 in Ekeby, the now-lost U 345 in Yttergärde, U 433 in Husby-Ärlinghundra, U 734 in Linsunda, U 739 in Gådi, U 803 in Långtora, U 962 in Vaksala, U 1011 in Örby, U 1040 in Fasma, the now-lost U 1114 in Myrby, U 1181 in Lilla Runhällen, U Fv1958;250 in Sigtuna, Vs 32 in Prästgården, and DR 212 in Tillitse. Of these, five stones known as the Jarlabanke Runestones were sponsored by the same person in memory of himself. In carving the runic text, the runemaster used a punctuation mark consisting of two dots as a word divider between each word.
