However, John Lennon demanded payment for footage of the Plastic Ono Band. A reedit of the film, which has the band removed from it, was released in 1973 as Keep on Rockin'. The original footage was eventually released in 1988 as Sweet Toronto. The film is currently "unavailable for sale" according to its listing in the Pennebaker Hegedus Films catalogue.

In 1944, Méliès's widow Jehanne d'Alcy claimed to the Cinémathèque française that Zecca had "massacred" the film, cutting out the best scenes, including one in which pumpkins race each other across a garden. D'Alcy asserted that the editing was deliberate sabotage, intended to ruin Méliès's career. This charge against Zecca was never proven, though the abrupt linear edits do suggest that Zecca's work extended to a reedit of the entire film.

The film was ultimately shot in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 30 days, from November to December 1990. Original music for the film was performed by rockabilly guitar legend Link Wray. Subsequently, a version was released on Netflix that removed 8 minutes of Wray's music. DiCillo objected to this version, and subsequently was allowed to reedit the film himself, removing scenes and voiceover that had been added by the distributor.

During the 1950s, Rouch began to produce longer ethnographic films. In 1954 he cast Zika in Jaguar as a young Songhai man traveling for work to the Gold Coast. Three men dramatized their real-life roles in the film, and became the first three actors of Nigerien cinema. Zika helped reedit the film, originally a silent ethnographic piece, into a feature-length movie somewhere between documentary and fiction (docufiction), and provided dialogue and commentary for a 1969 release.

A set of three remixes of tracks from On Vacation were released on July 15, 2016 under an extended play titled On Vacation Remixes: a remix of "Pleasure Centre" by Los Angeles group Pharaohs, CFCF's "Re-Version" of "Fleurs Laissés Dans Un Taxi," and Apiento's reedit of "Chasing." Pharaohs' re-edit of "Pleasure Centre" adds a set of hand percussion and flute riffs to the original song. CFCF's "Fleurs Laissés Dans Un Taxi" remix extends the original song's guitar and adds a saxophone and drum machine to its instrumentation. Apiento's remix of "Chasing" only makes few alterations to the source material, including adding filters to the accordion and adding a guitar part.

The American success of the blaxploitation genre led distributors to reedit this film and distribute it as G.I. Bro; in this version, scenes were cut to make Fred Williamson the lead character. The tagline on this version was "If you're a kraut, he'll take you out!" The reissue title for this film was Counterfeit Commandos. Severin Films released a three-disc set that features a newly remastered transfer of the film, an interview with Quentin Tarantino (the director of the similarly titled film Inglourious Basterds) and director Enzo G. Castellari, trailers, a tour of shooting locations, a documentary on the making of the film with interviews with Bo Svenson, Fred Williamson, and Enzo G. Castellari, and a CD with the soundtrack.
