Outward Bound Australia (OBA) is the Australian chapter of the not-for-profit organisation Outward Bound International. Since its founding in 1956, Outward Bound Australia has made outdoor education courses available to the community with the aim of developing teamwork skills and raising environmental awareness Australia wide. Outward Bound's focus on personal and leadership development through outdoor adventure activities has made it popular amongst a diverse array of groups and individuals within the community, over 250,000 Australians aged between 13 and 75 have completed a course. Notably, OBA maintains a number of longstanding relationships with partner schools such as the Cranbrook School in Sydney which has made OBA courses a mandatory part of their school curriculum.
Under the Nazi regime, Hahn was forced to emigrate to Scotland where he founded Gordonstoun School as well as later Outward Bound, Round Square and the United World Colleges.
Vane wrote a novelization of his play, Outward Bound: A Novel, published in 1929. A film adaptation titled Outward Bound (1930) was produced by Warner Bros. The studio engaged Robert Milton, director of the Broadway production, to direct the motion picture. Dudley Digges, Beryl Mercer and Lyonel Watts reprised their Broadway roles; Leslie Howard, who had played Henry in the stage production, starred in the role that had been played by Alfred Lunt.
He was most careful to not comment on controversial matters, and had a good working relationship with all three. He was instrumental in setting up the Outward Bound outdoor education organisation in New Zealand, opening the Outward Bound school in Anakiwa near Picton in September 1962, which bears his name. After his stint in the Peace Corps, Unsoeld joined Outward Bound and traveled about the country giving speeches and promoting the organization. After leaving Outward Bound he became one of the founding faculty at The Evergreen State College in Washington State. He was highlighted prominently in the first recruiting video in 1971, advising that "not every student should come to Evergreen". It was at The Evergreen State College where he conceived an Outdoor Education Program.

Initially named the Outward Bound School of Singapore (OBSS), it was founded by then Minister of the Interior and Defence and Deputy Chairman of the People's Association,History of PA, People's Association Goh Keng SweeGoh Keng Swee, Singapore Infopedia at Pulau Ubin in Singapore in 1967. From 1970, OBSS was under the management of the Ministry of Defence,MINDEF where it was used as a facility to prepare young men for compulsory national service. The number of participants has grown since 1991 and it is currently the largest Outward Bound centre worldwide.
Broadly, Outward Bound divides course offerings into five categories based on their intended participants: teens, young adults, adults, professionals, and people with disabilities. The 'classic' Outward Bound experience is generally considered to be the 21 day course, offered for teens, young adults, and adults (aged 27 and up). Shorter courses are available, typically lasting five to eight days. These offer a more 'concentrated' version of the curriculum, with some being modified or targeted to particular participants.
Many ropes courses and challenge course programs in French Canada and Europe are still known as Hébertism courses today. Marble, Colorado, the site of the first Colorado Outward Bound course, has been cited as the location of the first ropes course in the US, although this is highly unlikely. Patterned after a military obstacle course and similar to the course in use at the Outward Bound school in Aberdyfi, Wales, the course was constructed of hemp ropes.

Digby Fergusson Taylor (24 October 1941 – 18 April 2017) was a New Zealand sailor who skippered yachts in both the 1981–82 and 1985–86 Whitbread Round the World Races. Taylor built and skippered the 51-foot sloop Outward Bound, designed by Laurie Davidson, which competed in the 1981–82 Whitbread Round the World Race. In that race, Outward Bound won the trophy for best small yacht, and finished fifth overall. In 1982, Taylor sailed in the Whangarei to Nouméa yacht race, winning handicap honours.
Port Elizabeth represents a large percentage of South Africa's biological diversity and the city is a confluence point five of the seven South African biomes, namely the Thicket, Grassland, Nama-Karoo, Fynbos and Forest Biomes. A number of municipal nature reserves have been included in, and can be visited along the "Outward Bound Route" of the city. A mosaic of these 5 Biomes could be experienced in these reserves. The first formal wilderness medical responder class beyond first aid was taught by Carl Weil of Wilderness Medicine Outfitters, a variant of Advanced Wilderness First Aid for ski patrollers at Colorado State University in 1967. From this beginning a number of courses for wilderness responders beyond first aid appeared, including Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician, Advanced Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness Advanced First Aid, and others. Notable early schools and programs teaching such programming included Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities, Wilderness Medicine Outfitters, and Outward Bound (Outward Bound courses were often run with Peter Goth, who went on to found Wilderness Medical Associates). The first of these classes to specifically grant Wilderness First Responder certification was taught in 1985 by Frank Hubbell of SOLO and Peter Goth of Wilderness Medical Associates in the Florida Everglades basecamp of NC Outward Bound School.

Vedette escorted an outward- bound convoy late on 9 August 1917, and an inward-bound one on 10 August 1917, before she and Harvard were assigned to another outward-bound group of 10 merchantmen and two French patrol vessels. At 2010, Vedette's watch heard an explosion astern, accompanied by several blasts of a ship's whistle. A British merchantman, last in line of the convoy, had struck a naval mine; nearby, a French vessel rescued 14 men before the rapidly sinking ship disappeared. Twelve men had died in the explosion.

On the students' first day at XP they are taken to Wales to complete an Outward Bound expedition where they get to know each other and start building their character values. The first Outward Bound centre at Aberdyfi in Wales was established during the Second World War. The Forest schools of Denmark are examples of European programs with similar aims and objectives. Key outdoor education pioneers include Kurt Hahn, a German educator who founded schools such as the Schule Schloss Salem in Germany; the United World Colleges movement, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme (which emphasizes community service, craftsmanship skills, physical skill, and outdoor expeditions), and the Outward Bound movement. The second half of the twentieth century saw rapid growth of outdoor education in all sectors (state, voluntary, and commercial) with an ever-widening range of client groups and applications.

After the Armistice, Vane turned to writing plays, and authored two conventional works that caused little stir. Then came Outward Bound, which was so unusual in its subject matter as a fantasy-drama that no producer would go near it. Instead, Vane produced it himself, renting a theatre in London, painting his own backdrops, building his own sets, and bringing together a company of actors, all for a reported total of $600. Outward Bound is about a small, motley group of eight passengers who meet in the lounge of an ocean liner at sea and realize that they have no idea why they are there, or where they are bound.

Ghost Voyage is a 2008 horror television film produced for broadcast on the Sci Fi Channel in the United States. Its cast includes Antonio Sabato Jr., Deanna Russo, P.J. Marino and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. The story contains many elements of an updated Outward Bound and Between Two Worlds.
Fawkes was educated at the Royal Masonic School, Bushey, then spent eighteen months as an instructor at the Outward Bound School in Kenya with Voluntary Service Overseas. A graduate of the University of Wales Lampeter (BA English Honours), he joined the BBC as a general trainee in 1967.
Enthusiastic about country activities, Leavey continued to enjoy fox hunting and also took part in point-to-point races. He was a council member of the Outward Bound Trust from 1974 to 1992 and also became a trustee of the Kurt Hahn Trust in 1987. He also enjoyed fishing.

The schooner Ann, of 150 tons (bm), accompanied Norfolk to act as a ship's tender. On the outward-bound leg, Norfolk was nearly lost off Brazil. At South Georgia a shallop was lost with at least three crewmen. Norfolk returned with 400 tuns of oil and 10,000 seal skins.

On 10 June President captured the outward-bound Falmouth packet Duke of Montrose, Captain Aaron Groub Blewett, which managed to throw her mails overboard before President could send a prize crew aboard.
The school's quarterly newsletter is named The Cutter. A small fleet of three powered launches are maintained to complement the cutters. One, Matakana, was originally constructed as a lifeboat for Wahine. Wahine sank before the lifeboat came into service, and subsequently the Union Steam Ship Company donated her to Outward Bound.
Udall is married to Maggie Fox, an environmental lawyer who previously served as CEO of The Climate Reality Project. The two met while working at Outward Bound, and were married in 1982. They have two children, Jedediah and Tess. A golfer, Udall was referred to as one of Congress' better players.
In 1966, Cook and her family moved to California. Cook attended attended Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, California. While attending high school, Cook became a runner-up in the Miss Newport Beach contest, earned a student pilot’s license, completed an Outward Bound course and successfully climbed Mount Whitney.
In both 1957 and 1958, she made her outward bound passage by way of Samoa and Australia. Intensive antisubmarine training was her major occupation during periods between deployment. Fletcher was decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 1 August 1969, and sold for scrap on 22 February 1972.

Outward Bound was the most popular play of its kind, in an era filled with philosophical fantasy works for the stage and screen, including Death Takes a Holiday (which was filmed in 1934, and subsequently remade as Meet Joe Black); and The Scoundrel; in the years preceding the Great Depression, the play seemed to define the zeitgeist of the period, and it endured in popularity right up through the advent of World War II. Outward Bound is a jazz album by Eric Dolphy, released in 1960. His first album as leader, it is somewhat less adventurous and more oriented towards straight bebop than the majority of his later recordings. Of the three Dolphy originals on the album, "G.W." is dedicated to the Californian bandleader Gerald Wilson, "Les" is named after the trombonist Lester Robinson, and "245" was the number of Dolphy's house.
In this period Outward Bound spread to over 40 countries, including the US in the 1960s. Other US based outdoor education programs include Project Adventure and the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Project Adventure focuses on day use of ropes courses. NOLS uses the outdoor setting to train leaders for outdoor programs and for other settings including training every new US astronaut and 10% of the US Naval Academy.
The Kenosha Unified School District operates 23 public elementary schools, five middle schools, seven charter schools, and six high schools: Mary D. Bradford High School, George Nelson Tremper High School, Indian Trail High School and Academy, LakeView Technology Academy, Reuther Central High School, and Harborside Academy, the latter a research school that uses the Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound model; it was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Thomas was also involved with Young Audiences, a national organization that provides arts programs to schools. Additionally, Thomas was chairman of the Vail Valley Institute, which holds seminars on public issues. Brooks Thomas died in San Diego from complications of a brain injury after a fall that he had suffered several weeks earlier. At the time, he was on his way to San Francisco to attend an Outward Bound board meeting.
She was armed with two guns and small arms, and had a crew of 25 men. She had captured nothing since leaving Ostend the previous Wednesday. A month later, on 4 and 5 May, Jalouse was among the vessels that captured 12 outward-bound Greenland ships. The other vessels included the hired armed cutters Fox, and Marechal de Cobourg, and , though most were much larger and included , , , , , among others.
Before her marriage, on 7 June 1918 "The London Gazette" reported St Osyth receiving an OBE for her work as "Hon Secretary, Essex Local War Pensions Committee". After their marriage the new Mrs St Osyth Wood moved into Parsonage Hall, Bures and became great benefactor to the local community. She died at Wasperton, Warwickshire aged 84 years. Wood wrote a rousing school song for Barrow Grammar School entitled 'Outward Bound'.
Retracing her outward-bound voyage with stops at Guam, Midway, and Pearl Harbor, Turner Joy entered Long Beach on 26 September. Upon her return to the United States, the warship began preparations for her regular overhaul. She entered the Long Beach Naval Shipyard on 28 November and remained there until late February 1969. When post-overhaul trials ended on 15 March, the ship resumed normal operations out of Long Beach.
Westventure is the school's 12-day outdoor education programme for year 10 students, established in 1970. Originally based at Clayton on the shore of Lake Alexandrina, the school originally ran the programme in conjunction with Outward Bound. Following sale of the Clayton site, the school utilised a nearby camp site at Point Sturt owned by the Churches of Christ, until it was able to purchase the property in 2010.

The school was opened by then Governor-General of New Zealand Lord Cobham, who landed in the Marlborough Sounds for the occasion on board an RNZAF flying boat accompanied by Prime Minister Keith Holyoake and Leader of the Opposition Walter Nash. It was named "The Cobham Outward Bound School". The school was intended for young men originally, who attended for a period of 16 days. A regimented program awaited them.

At least fifteen people were wounded. With the outbreak of shooting, the crowd rapidly broke up but word of the killings quickly spread triggering fierce riots throughout the capital. Benjamin Franklin, who was in London at the time, reported of "sawyers destroying saw-mills; sailors unrigging all the outward bound ships [...] Watermen destroying private boats and threatening bridges." The crisis was so severe, it was rumoured that the king contemplated abdication.
Following an accident in 2010 when his wife, Kerri Rawlings, came off her bike and suffered a serious brain injury, Andy Friend undertook a 5000 km journey from Cooktown to Canberra to raise awareness and money for Acquired Brain Injury. This was to support Brain Injury Australia and Outward Bound. The journey was successful, with his wife as part of the support crew, and was completed in late November 2011.

This was the same expedition that had found Brazil on their outward-bound journey the previous year. Coelho left Cape Verde in June and from this point, Vespucci's account is the only surviving record of their explorations. On 17 August 1501 they reached Brazil at a latitude of about 6° south. Upon landing they encountered a hostile band of natives who killed and ate one of the crewmen.

OBS has also partnered with overseas Outward Bound centres such as Oman & South Africa to provide more global programmes for youths. Recently announced at the Singapore Youth Conference 2014, OBS was restructured to be part of the new strengthened National Youth Council (NYC) Autonomous Agency. As one of the National Youth Developer, OBS will co-drive the national youth volunteer programme, Youth Corps Singapore with NYC.OBS will join the restructured NYC.
John has been guiding since 1996. He has led major polar expeditions and guided television crews on the Arctic Ocean. Previous work includes: Northwinds Polar Training with the Canadian Military Special Forces Unit in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada; Catlin Arctic Survey with CNN, British Channel 4, and Al Jazeera English at the Arctic Ocean Scientific Base Camp; Northwinds Vision South Pole Expedition; Voyageur Outward Bound School; and Project Wildcat at Northwestern University.
Captain James Patten Anstice (or Anstrue), sailed Henry Porcheer from the Downs on 1 April 1818, bound for Bengal and Bombay. She arrived at Kidderpore on 11 August. Outward bound, she passed Saugor on 25 September, reaching Cochin on 28 November, and arriving at Bombay on 8 December. Homeward bound, she reached Tellicherry on 7 January 1819, and St Helena on 26 March, before arriving at the Downs on 7 June.
In addition, there were seven homeward and two outward bound Dutch Indiamen, and from 50 to 60 merchant vessels, all lying in Plymouth Sound. The ships were ordered round to Hamoaze where, after landing their powder, they were allowed to keep their colours flying. In time, the vessels became prizes. All the British vessels at Plymouth on 20 January 1795, including Viper, shared in the prize money arising from the seizure.
Leslie Howard played the role of Henry in the stage production of Outward Bound which ran at the Ritz Theatre in New York City January 7 – May 10, 1924. Dudley Digges, Beryl Mercer and Lyonel Watts all reprised their roles for the film. Alfred Lunt played Tom Prior and Margalo Gillmore played Ann. In the film, Howard took Lunt's part and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. played the role originally performed by Howard.
Unsoeld and Hornbein's climb was the first ascent from the peak's west ridge, and the first major traverse of a Himalayan peak. His subsequent activities included working as a U.S. Forest Service Smokejumper, Peace Corps director in Nepal, speaker for Outward Bound, faculty member at Oregon State University and The Evergreen State College and mountaineering guide. An avalanche during a winter climb of Mount Rainier took his life.

In Tuckman's 1965 paper, only 50% of the studies identified a stage of intragroup conflict, and some of the remaining studies jumped directly from stage 1 to stage 3.
She stopped for a few days at an intermediary port where the Peishwa landed for a few days, and then carried him to Bassein, where she delivered him on 16 December. Herculean then returned to Bombay, where she arrived on 31 December. Herculean arrived at Calcutta on 2 April 1803. Outward bound from Calcutta, she was at Kedgeree on 17 June, and reached Poolo Bay (about nine miles south of Fort Marlborough) on 28 September.
By the end of the 1940s, the school achieved its primary target of 250 pupils and continued growing in size. It built dormitories on the estate, removing the need for maintaining a house in Altyre, Forres, many miles away from the main campus. Gordonstoun also developed its academic offerings. It arranged to admit poorer children from the surrounding areas, and to deepen the Outward Bound-type activities that were central to Hahn's system.

Sterling School was founded as a boys' college preparatory school by Norman Rioux in 1958. The school's educational philosophy was later influenced by that of Outward Bound founder Kurt Hahn. The school's transition to higher education in the 1970s began with the Academic Short Course in Outdoor Leadership, a 21-day program. In 1974, Sterling School was faced with closure and a small group of faculty launched the educational model that became Sterling College.
Fuller had been seconded from the Blue Funnel Line following wartime experience during the Battle of the Atlantic of surviving two successive torpedo attacks and commanding an open lifeboat in the Atlantic Ocean for thirty-five days without losing a single member of the crew. An educational charity, named The Outward Bound Trust, was established in 1946 to operate the school. A second school followed in England at Eskdale Green in 1950.
Built in 1914 as Grossherzog Friedrich August, a school training ship for the German merchant marine, the since 1921 Norwegian-owned Statsraad Lehmkuhl is one of the oldest sail training ships in service From its modern interpretations to its antecedents when maritime nations would send young naval officer candidates to sea (e.g., see Outward Bound), sail training provides an unconventional and effective way of building many useful skills on and off the water.
He purchased his first surfboard in 1923, a 70-pounder, and his second of similar design in 1926. Curlewis could ride the board either standing on his feet, or standing on his head. Outward Bound movement in New South Wales, was founded by Curlewis in 1956. In 1960 Curlewis chaired the International Convention on Lifesaving Techniques that recommended and led to general adoption of the 'kiss of life' for resuscitation drowning victims.
Fire from Argo killed Oiseaus second lieutenant during the pursuit. Oiseau was nine days out of Rochfort and taken nothing. On 25 December a tremendous gale hit Portsmouth and several outward-bound West Indiamen drifted from their anchors.
After graduating from the University of California in 1925, Yarborough acted in London, New York, and California, having the leading-man role in Outward Bound. He was a member of the Eva Le Gallienne Civic Repertoire in New York City. Yarborough's NBC radio debut was in 1930, broadcasting from San Francisco. In 1932, Yarborough began a long run as Clifford Barbour on the radio serial One Man's Family, continuing in the role throughout his life.

Hoey has been a trustee of the Outward Bound charity since October 2002. A vice- president of the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association, Hoey is a supporter of the women's national team and the work of the charity. In December 2018 she became patron of the Professional Paralegal Register. In October 2013, Hoey was fined £240 for driving through a red light having previously criticised cyclists as "Lycra louts that run red lights".
The return voyage proved to be both more eventful and more successful than the outward-bound cruise. On 17 August 1918, she stopped a Norwegian sailing ship, the Nordhav, out of Buenos Aires, Argentina, bound for New York laden with linseed. U-117 sailors placed bombs on board the cargo carrier that sank the prize. Three days later, the U-boat engaged in an unsuccessful surface gun duel with an unidentified, strongly armed steamer.
This was confusing as the outward-bound platform served both the Southern and Western Lines. This problem was partially solved by 'splitting' the platform into two: Southern Line trains stopped at the southern end of the platform, Western Line at the northern end. However the platform was short, so that this did not always resolve the confusion. The above practice became less prevalent following the higher frequency of the July 2007 timetable.
The students were participating in Basecamp, a program run by their Portland school following the principles of Outward Bound, and required for all tenth graders. Led by Tom Goman, a teacher from the school, the team set off from Timberline Lodge on Monday May 12, 1986, at 3 a.m. The forecast predicted an afternoon storm. The party consisted of 20 people: 15 students, one parent, Goman, the dean of students, and two technical consultants.
Udall later graduated from Williams College in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in American civilization. In 1976 Udall worked as a field coordinator for his father's campaign to win the Democratic nomination against Jimmy Carter. After college, Udall moved to Colorado and began his career with Outward Bound, a non-profit outdoor education organization. For ten years Udall worked as a course instructor, in which he would bring patrons on outdoor expeditions.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Kids Company, The Eve Appeal, Hospice in the Weald, ICAN, and Outward Bound. They have also been significant supporters of Mansfield College, Oxford. In recognition of their significant contributions, Mansfield hosts an annual Hands Lecture series, whose speakers have included Lord Mandelson, David Boies and Bob Geldof.
All ninth graders attend a week-long Outward Bound experience in the fall at Sharpe Reservation at Harriman State Park to build character, teamwork and leadership skills. All Students in Validus are put in groups of 10-15 student groups called crews; Crews are headed by Validus teachers who act as personal guidance counselors. All Crews are involved in a crew challenge called crew Olympics where they compete against one another to become Crew Champions.
In his first term at PBJC, he was in an English class taught by Watson B. Duncan III. Duncan pushed him into trying out for a play he was producing, Outward Bound. He cast him in the lead role based on having heard him read Shakespeare in class, leading to his winning the 1956 Florida State Drama Award for his performance. "I read two words and they gave me a lead", he later said.
Dolphy's recording career as a leader began with Prestige. His association with the label spanned 13 albums recorded from April 1960 to September 1961, though he was not the leader for all of the sessions. Fantasy released a 9-CD box set in 1995 containing all of Dolphy's recorded output for Prestige. Dolphy's first two albums as leader were Outward Bound and Out There; both featured cover artwork by Richard "Prophet" Jennings.

The curriculum of City View was developed by Outward Bound and is called expeditionary learning. The program uses theme based learning with an emphasis on field work by students. It also encourages communications and teamwork between the students. As of 2010, the K-8, 149 student school was above the state average in eleven categories, and below the state average in four standardized test categories for reading, writing, math, and science at different grade levels.
Academic departments use Pen Arthur for field trips and study weekends throughout the year, and it plays a key part as a base for outdoor activities organised by the CCF and Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. During their first year at the school, all pupils go to Pen Arthur for a week, during which time they participate in many "outward-bound" activities such as caving, hiking and even visiting a Roman gold mine.
Calhoun was raised in Greenville, South Carolina. Her father, a corporate lawyer and a descendant of John C. Calhoun, sent her to an exclusive private school in Greenville where she excelled in sports, particularly hockey and skiing. She began rock climbing through an Outward Bound course at the age of 18 and took up ice climbing at 19. She attended the University of Vermont and graduated in 1982 with a degree in recreation management.
Next, Seymour captured the privateer brig Aimable Manette in the Channel on 1 May 1797, after an eight-hour chase. She was armed with 14 guns and had a crew of 69 men. She was a new vessel, half coppered, and beautiful. She had been out 13 days, and not only had she not taken anything, the evening before she had encountered an outward-bound English yellow-sided ship armed with sixteen 9-pounder guns.

On 4 October, Kearny's command bagged her first "piratical boat" and its crew of five. Later that same day, Warren captured a brig "peerced (sic) for 16 guns" flying the Greek flag. For the next three weeks, Warren cruised between Cape Matapan and Carabusa, touching occasionally to contact outward-bound American merchantmen. While off Milos on 25 October, Kearny learned of recent pirate attacks on the American ships Cherub and Rob Roy.
A television series aired on Discovery Kids from 1999-2003. In each location, the show followed a group of eight young adults as they learned to work together and help each other survive in the wilderness. Under the guidance of instructors from the Outward Bound school, the group members struggled to cope with nature and each other, with success and failure, with physical and mental challenges, and finally bonded together from the experience.
Rattlesnake had been ordered to survey the island to ascertain whether it would make a useful base for outward-bound Indiamen. She anchored, but that evening the wind increased and by seven o’clock she was dragging. Two hours later the first cable parted and Commander d’Auvergne club-hauled his way out, setting main and fore sails, and using the remaining anchor cable as a spring. This successfully put Rattlesnake’s head to seaward.

In 2016, Koch published Quench Your Own Thirst: Business Lessons Learned Over a Beer or Two, in which he discussed how he left his career as a management consultant to start his own brewery using his great-great-grandfather's recipe.
Songs of the Sea was written for Harry Plunket Greene, a renowned baritone in his day. He gave the first performance, at the 1904 Leeds Festival. The texts are: # "Drake's Drum" # "Outward Bound" # "Devon, O Devon, in Wind and Rain" # "Homeward Bound" # "The Old Superb" It is not exactly clear which Superb Newbolt had in mind. However, the best-known ship of that name in the Napoleonic era was HMS Superb (1798).
Falling Leaves is a 1924 play by the British writer Sutton Vane. It features a love triangle between three characters.Wearing p.331 It premiered at the Pleasure Gardens Theatre in Folkestone before transferring to the Little Theatre in the West End where it ran for 15 performances, failing to recapture the success of his play of the previous year Outward Bound despite the fact it starred Diana Hamilton who had also appeared in the earlier hit.
Miller also wrote, as journalist and author of fiction and non-fiction. In the former capacity she contributed very widely, including to Fraser's Magazine, Lett's Illustrated Household Magazine, Belgravia, and The Governess, the Lady's Pictorial, The Woman's World, the Young Woman, and The Echo. She was for 32 years, from 1886, the 'Ladies'Notes' columnist for the Illustrated London News. Progressing in her career, she was from 1892 editor of two magazines for colonists, Outward Bound and Homeward Bound.
Other leading roles followed, including in The Climbers (1901), A Rose o' Plymouth-town (1902), Heidelberg (1902), The Music Master (1904), and The Road to Yesterday (1906). Her later stage career was not successful, exceptions being The Old Soak (1922), The Shame Woman (1923), Outward Bound (1924), playing Mrs. Midge, and as a replacement for the part of Martha Brewster in the hit Arsenic and Old Lace in 1941. Her last stage appearance was in Land's End (1946).
Outdoor education is organized learning that takes place in the outdoors. Outdoor education programs sometimes involve residential or journey wilderness-based experiences in which students participate in a variety of adventurous challenges and outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, canoeing, ropes courses and group games. Outdoor education draws upon the philosophy, theory, and practices of experiential education and environmental education. He was brought up in Europe and Aspen, where he developed his love for the mountains. His grandfather was Nicholas DeVore I, author and professor who pioneered the academic study of astrology. A charismatic student, DeVore graduated as class president from Aspen High School, where he played hockey and ski jumped for the Aspen Ski Club. He graduated from Outward Bound and the National Outdoor Leadership School, and worked as a wilderness ranger, soloing for days in the backcountry.
Her husband, John Hubert Fairfax (1872-1950), was a pastoralist, businessman and philanthropist, and grandson of John Fairfax, an early owner of The Sydney Morning Herald. Her son, Sir Vincent Charles Fairfax, (1909–1993), was well known for his generous philanthropy and supported organisations such as the Boy Scouts and Outward Bound. In 1962, Ruth Fairfax House was saved from demolition by dismantling it and reconstructing it in Ingham; it was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 2003.
Mark Dubois (born February 24, 1949) began as an environmental activist, initially focusing on saving rivers and has worked to mobilize and engage citizens globally for a vibrant future. In 1972 he co-founded Environmental Traveling Companions (E.T.C.) to offer environmental education and Outward Bound-type trips to disabled persons and disadvantaged youth. In 1973, he co- founded Friends of the River to fight the flooding of the Stanislaus River and canyon by the New Melones Dam.
Manly Library Local Studies The Guides left Ivanhoe Park when Manly District Girl Guides closed on 1 July 2002. The new unit is the Harbord/Freshwater Girl Guides that meets in Freshwater. Three honoured guides from Manly are Merle Deer AM (Guide representative to the National Council of Women), Gladys Eastick MBE (for Guide service in Australia, Papua New Guinea and Europe) and Mrs WC (Barbara) Wentworth (State Commissioner, Board for Far West Children's Homes and Outward Bound).
The Anakiwa school was founded in 1962 by Christchurch lawyer Hamish Thomas. Thomas had previously visited English Outward Bound schools, and conducted a trial course on Auckland's Motutapu Island (in 1961). His daughter remarked that he "gave up a successful criminal law practice and a very comfortable existence to do something he truly believed in". A guest house (originally built by the Beauchamp family, who had farmed Anakiwa since 1863) was purchased and restored using £100,000 in donated funds.
As with many outdoor education activities, Outward Bound participants agree to undertake an increased level of risk when attending their course. The organisation's terms and conditions state in part, "Although we have procedures in place to minimise risk, none of these risks can be completely eliminated. When undertaking any activity, you will be briefed on the risks and how to manage them." They further note that no life-changing injuries have occurred at the school in the past decade.
From a base in Rye, New York, since 1990 Spaeth has provided identity planning and creative counsel to scores of clients in diverse categories. He is credited with such corporate brands as Dow Jones, Eastman Chemical, Celera Genomics, Flowserve, Commonfund, FIRST Robotics and Outward Bound USA. Udall has said "there isn't a Coloradan out there who doesn't cycle, hunt, hike... We're an outdoor state. It fits our worldview, and it's how we define ourselves." An experienced mountaineer, Udall has climbed many peaks during his work as an Outward Bound instructor, and in his personal life. Udall has climbed Colorado's 100 tallest peaks, known as "The Colorado Centennials," as well as Mount Kangchenjunga in the Himalayas and Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America.
There is no actual reference to the Aurora Borealis in the lyrics; it is merely a play on words in the title. Mark Evans (born 28 May 1961) is a British explorer, field guide, author, motivational speaker and wilderness advocate. He was awarded the MBE in 2011 for his work using outdoor journeys to connect cultures and promote intercultural dialogue between future leaders from the Arab and western world. He is currently General Manager of Outward Bound Oman. In January 2016 he completed a 49-day, 1300 km crossing of the largest sand desert on earth, on foot and by camel.
Capturing General Malartic earned Moffat the public award of an honour sword. The privateer had captured several East Indiamen, including Raymond, Woodcot, and Princess Royal, all of the same size as Phoenix.Chatterton (2008), p.112. Fifteen days after capturing Malartic Phoenix reached Kedgeree, and on 7 December she arrived at Diamond Harbour. She was at Saugor on 9 January 1801. Outward bound, she left off her pilot at the mouth of the Hooghly River on 14 January.

Previously, she had been a director of The Voices Foundation from 23 September 1998, until she resigned on 12 July 2005. The Battle of Plymouth was a naval battle in the First Anglo-Dutch War. It took place on 16 August 1652 (26 August 1652 (Gregorian calendar)) and was a short battle, but had the unexpected outcome of a Dutch victory over England. General-at-Sea George Ayscue of the Commonwealth of England attacked an outward bound convoy of the Dutch Republic commanded by Vice-Commodore Michiel de Ruyter. The two commanders had been personal friends before the war.
Global AdventuresOBS Global Adventures Global programmes are conducted with sister Outward Bound centres in various regions and combine both adventure and cultural learning. The 11-day Global Adventure Oman spans the Omani desert, trekking across the Jabel Akhder Mountain in the day and camping under the Arabian stars at night. Another global programme is the 18-day Global Adventure South Africa which includes exploring the sandstone foothills of the spectacular Drakensberg. These programmes are open to youths above 17.
Pulau Ubin Camp 1 & 2 When Outward Bound first started in 1967, its facilities were spartan. Currently, OBS has two campuses at Pulau Ubin. Using up approximately 9 hectares of land, some of the climbing facilities are the Peak Ascent Tower, inverse and tripod towers, Vertical Challenge Activities, The Indiana, rock climbing walls, and non-height activities such as the Tunnelling and Caving system. Other facilities include teaching rooms and a 25-metre swimming pool for kayaking.
On 3 September 2012, a team of 40 people, including Prince Andrew, Duke of York, abseiled from the tower's 87th floor. This feat was performed to raise money for the Outward Bound Trust and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund. In November 2012, the French urban climber Alain Robert was spotted in the building by security guards. At the end of the month, the Shard's owners won an injunction to prevent him from entering or climbing the building.
U-101’s final patrol took her from Saint Nazaire back to Kiel around the British Isles once more, departing from her French base on 11 October. While outward bound through the Bay of Biscay on 13 October she was attacked at 10:45 by a twin-engine aircraft. Three bombs were dropped. Some damage must have been visible on the surface as she was attacked again while submerged with a further three bombs at 16:42.
She later returned to Baltimore to attend the University of Maryland School of Law, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree in 1995. She was admitted to the Maryland bar in 1996 and to the federal bar in 1997. She is a former at-large member of the Alliance of Black Women Attorneys.
Craig is a passionate outdoorsman and worked as an Outward Bound instructor for several years after college. He's led climbing trips up the mountaineers route on Mt. Whitney, Aconcagua, Mt. Rainier, Pico De Orizaba, and Denali. Craig is married to actress and former Yellow Power Ranger Sasha Williams, and together they have 2 children: Noah and Colin. In May 2019, it was announced that Craig is working on his next project, a horror-comedy entitled Bride and Doom.
Work study programs are available as well as an Outward Bound program affiliated with Hofstra University. Students can earn college credit by taking college level courses in conjunction with C.W. Post College and Syracuse University. The New York State Education Commissioner has recognized the library as an "Electronic Doorway Library," one of the first libraries in the state officially designed for its pioneering use of computers and telecommunications technology. The School mascot is the Golden Tornado.
Papprill also produced for Ackermann a series of sporting prints after G. H. Laporte between 1860 and 1865. These were entitled: Racing, Hunting and Coursing. He also produced a series of shipping prints "Outward Bound" and "Homeward Bound" (Liverpool) as well as a series showing famous military vessels. Other engravings by Papprill appear in Hong Kong showing naval scenes in the harbour there circa 1860. These engravings form part of the exhibition celebrating Hong Kong's return to China 1997.
Backpackers at a wilderness therapy program Wilderness therapy (also known as outdoor behavioral healthcare) is an adventure-based therapy treatment modality for behavior modification and interpersonal self-improvement, combining experiential education, individual and group therapy in a wilderness setting. The success of the Outward Bound outdoor education program in the 1940s inspired the approach taken by many current-day wilderness therapy programs, though some adopted a survivalist methodology. Young individuals aged 12–17 are the most frequent clients.
Barrows grew up in Stonington, Maine, a town on the island of Deer Isle, off the coast of Maine. She participated in Hurricane Island, Outward Bound USA school at the age of sixteen. Barrows graduated in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in zoology with a focus on marine biology from the University of Tasmania, Australia. After returning to Stonington, Maine, Barrows completed her master's degree in microplastics from the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine in 2018.
In 1815 Rover accompanied Rear-Admiral George Burlton in , escorting the outward-bound East India trade. Rover went south of the equator, touching Maranham, Brazil, before returning to Britain with a convoy of merchant vessels from Barbados. Rover patrolled off Dieppe in order to prevent Napoleon Bonaparte's escape after the battle of Waterloo. She was carrying dispatches from Admiral Lord Keith to Admiral Henry Hotham when she encountered with the by then captured Napoleon on board.
In 1979, at the age of 17 he was selected to take part in six-week scientific research and mountaineering expedition to the Lyngen Alps in Arctic Norway, organised by The British Exploring Society, for whom he went on to lead three extended research expeditions to Svalbard for young people, totalling 20 months in the field between 1992 and 2002,, Star Schools 2004 Report undertaking research for organisations such as the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, and Norwegian Polar Research Institute. Evans attended Priory Grammar School for Boys in Shrewsbury, and graduated from Aberystwyth University in 1986, embarking on a 21-year career as a teacher of Geography in UK, Kenya, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Oman. In February 2009 he was appointed Executive Director of Outward Bound Oman (OBO), the first and only Outward Bound school in an Arabic speaking country. OBO is a not for profit foundation established by Ministerial Decree that delivers outcome focused challenging outdoor journeys in the mountains and deserts of Oman for young people, and the emerging and existing talent of leading corporates in the region.
Contestant Max made his way on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway to his key challenge and the Interceptor climbed along the train in pursuit of Max. Contestant Suzanne got soaked in Wast Water while trying to get her key. At the end of the episode, the Interceptor blocked the entrance to the Eskdale Outward Bound Centre where contestant Suzanne was coming but her partner Max grabbed her just in time before the Interceptor. They won the money with 6 seconds to spare.
He served as the first chairman of New Zealand Steel Ltd. In 1960, he established the Woolf Fisher Trust to provide funding that maintained the salaries of post-primary schoolteachers and principals while sending them overseas to further their education. Fisher also supported the Outward Bound Trust of New Zealand and in 1961 became its first president. In the 1964 New Year Honours, Fisher was appointed a Knight Bachelor for public services, particularly in connection with the development of industry.
Derech Hateva was founded in 2002 by Yael Ukeles, a New York native and outdoor educator. The program was created connect Jews with Israel and to stress the connection that exists between Judaism and nature. The organization began as an outgrowth of Ukeles' earlier program Teva Adventure and was incubated by SPNI (Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel) for its first years. Derech Hateva is modeled after environmental programs in the United States like National Outdoor Leadership School and Outward Bound.
Then at the age of 15, he played himself in the Disney Channel TV series Movie Surfers. Before reality shows were all the rage, Andrew again played himself in a Discovery Channel adventure series, Outward Bound. In 2004 he was cast into the ABC sitcom, Complete Savages, where he played fifteen-year-old Sam Savage, one of five teenage boys being raised by single father Nick (Keith Carradine). On the show, Andrew's love interest was played by rising star Autumn Reeser.
Moving to Warner Bros. in 1942, Henreid was cast in Now, Voyager, playing the romantic lead opposite Bette Davis. His next role was as Victor Laszlo, a heroic anti-German resistance leader on the run, in Casablanca (1943) with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Warners then tried to consolidate Henreid's new status by co- starring him with Ida Lupino in a romantic drama, In Our Time (1944) then putting him in Between Two Worlds (1944), a remake of Outward Bound.
In 1953, he married Honey Harper. Duncan began teaching Speech and English at Palm Beach Junior College in the early days of the college's history, eventually rising to the head of the English department. Burt Reynolds attended Palm Beach Junior College while recuperating at home in Riviera Beach from football injuries he suffered playing for Florida State University. Duncan saw a spark of talent in Reynolds, and asked him to read for a play, Sutton Vane's Outward Bound, which the college was presenting.
Perhaps inevitably, students are occasionally injured during activities. Because some activities take place in remote areas of forest and terrain inaccessible to ground vehicles, helicopters are sometimes used to airlift injured participants to treatment at nearby Wairau Hospital. The need to evacuate students in this way is unusual, and they may be able to rejoin their course following assessment. In 2011 the Outward Bound cutter Matahorua was struck by Delphinus, a 12.9 metre catamaran owned by a Picton ecotourism company.

In May 2018, he visited China and opened the Pitch@Palace China Bootcamp 2.0 at Peking University. In March 2019, the Duke of York took over the patronage of the Outward Bound Trust from his father, the Duke of Edinburgh, serving up until his own resignation in November 2019. Prince Andrew had held the position of chairman of the board of trustees of the organisation since 1999.
Blue Peter nautical flag which indicates a vessel is "Outward Bound" is used as the program's symbol. Mark Udall was born in Tucson, Arizona, to Patricia J. (née Emery) and Morris "Mo" Udall, the U.S. Representative for from 1961 to 1991, and candidate for the 1976 Democratic nomination for President. Udall attended and graduated from Canyon del Oro High School in 1968, where he was elected student body president. Udall won the Arizona State Golf Championship Boy's division in 1968.
Fowey remained on the Western Approaches throughout February and into March. On 14 March she was deployed with her sister HMS Bideford and the destroyer HMS Wrestler in escorting the outward bound Convoy OG 22F through the Western Approaches on its way to Gibraltar. Fowey was detached on 19 March and returned to port. She deployed again on 5 April, this time with Bideford and HMS Watchman, escorting the inward bound Convoy HG 25 through the South Western Approaches from Gibraltar to Liverpool.

Arabic was zigzagging at the time, and the commander of U-24 said that he thought she was trying to ram his submarine. He fired a single torpedo which struck the liner aft, and she sank within 10 minutes, killing 44 passengers and crew, 3 of whom were American.
Robertson was first introduced to sailing by his father when he was 11, piloting mirror's off the coast in Sunderland. After his accident in 1994, he was introduced to Paralympic trimarans by a spinal injuries charity during an outward bound course in the Lake District. In 1997 he began sailing Sonar's. By 2003 Robertson was joined by fellow British sailor Hannah Stodel and newcomer to the sport, ice sledge hockey Paralympian Stephen Thomas, to make up a Mixed Sonar crew.
His mother sent him to an Outward Bound wilderness camp for at-risk teenagers, having first considered a residential recovery program. Affleck became sober in his mid-twenties, stating in a 1998 interview that alcohol was "dangerous" for him. He received residential treatment for addiction in 2001 and maintained his sobriety for a "couple of years" afterwards. In subsequent years, he declined to discuss his alcoholism in detail and later described it as a period where he "drank relatively normally".
As a result, he decided to become an instructor at Colorado and Canadian outward bound Mountain Schools and has taught over forty-five classes. Over the years he still hasn’t retired from climbing, has participated in over forty-five world class expeditions and continues to operate his business leadership and challenge courses in the Canadian Rockies. In 2012 he celebrated the 30th anniversary of his Everest climb that gave him the title of the First Canadian to climb Mt Everest.
Calhoun began her career in mountain climbing as an Outward Bound guide in Colorado after graduating from college. She later became a guide for the American Alpine Institute, with whom she led climbs in Peru, Bolivia, Alaska, Argentina, and Nepal. On a personal trip to Peru in 1984, she climbed Pirámide, Alpamayo and Qitarahu. In 1987 she was the first American woman to climb Dhaulagiri in Nepal, marking her first 8,000-meter peak, although she and her teammates had no Himalayan climbing experience.
Sir Michael has also held the positions of both Director of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award between 1988 and 1998 and a Director of the Outward Bound Trust since 1995. He is a director of the London Law Trust, a grant making charitable trust, and has served as the Deputy Chairman of the Development Committee of the College of St. George. Sir Michael became the Governor of the Military Knights of Windsor in 2000 and retired from this post in July 2012.
Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) was established in 1967 at Pulau Ubin, by Dr Goh Keng Swee, while the National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) opened its 25-hectare site camp located between Kampung Bahru and Kampung Noordin.Chua, 2000. p. 38–39. The camp is called Camp Resilience where Secondary 2 and 3 NPCC cadets have a 3-day 2 night stay for training. Secondary 2 NPCC cadets go to Adventure Training Camp (ATC) while Secondary 3 NPCC cadets go to Survival Training Camp (STC).
The climbers were individuals who had never met each other and came from a variety of backgrounds. Tom Riederer was on the path of the Seven Summits - this would be his fifth, all filmed in 3D. Mike Smith was an athletic mechanic working for Delta Airlines in Atlanta GA. Gary D. Bacon is a former business executive- turned-adventure-traveler and mountaineer. Steve Ullman was only 18 years old at the time of the climb, and had participated in Outward Bound mountaineering school.
QAC organises leisure activities outside college time including exercising in the Feelgood Fitness Centre, five-a-side football, soccer training, athletics training and competitions, (portmanteau of fitness and jujutsu), goalball, swimming club and other related activities, such as ten-pin bowling at Tenpin, Star City, ice skating, pool tournaments and climbing. Other activities it organises include cinema (especially at Cineworld), premiership football matches, concerts (especially at the NIA and the NEC), karaoke, residential visits, outward bound expeditions and music club.
Rattlesnake and were sent to survey Trindade and Martim Vaz, to establish the islands suitability for a base for outward-bound Indiamen. The islands are volcanic with nothing but turtle doves and land crabs.Noted when Edmund Halley placed a Union Jack on the islands in 1700. On the evening of 21 October 1781 during a heavy storm, Rattlesnake lost her anchor rope and in trying to get to sea struck a rock and was run ashore; Jupiter picked up five sailors.
While Athenian's founder, Dyke Brown, was influenced by Kurt Hahn, a wilderness expedition was not originally required in the curriculum. In the summer of 1968, two female members of the class of 1969 participated in the only program available for girls in the Boundary Waters Park. Upon their return to school, they impressed upon Brown and other school leaders the importance of having such an experience by part of the Athenian education. Originally, Athenian students went on courses provided by the Sierra arm of Outward Bound.
Much of what may be called an outdoor adventure education springs from this connection. The now famous Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and the International Award scheme comes from this co-operation between Hahn and Young. The Outward Bound movement, after World War II, owes a considerable debt to their friendship. During World War II, Young was president of the Alpine Club and it was through his efforts that the British Mountaineering Council, the umbrella organisation for climbers in Great Britain, was created in 1945.
The Schule Schloss Salem, also commonly referred to as Salem College, hence offers an education for its students at the academic as well as social levels. The school was established by the educator Kurt Hahn with support of Prince Maximilian of Baden in 1920 and from the beginning accepted girls and boys. Under the Nazi regime Hahn (who was Jewish) was forced to emigrate to Scotland where he founded the British Salem School of Gordonstoun as well as later Outward Bound and the United World Colleges.
When her father died suddenly in 1922, Esmond returned to school and at the time considered abandoning her ambition to act. After reassessing her future and coming to terms with her father's death, she studied with the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and returned to the West End stage in 1924. In 1925, she starred with her mother in a play Mary, Mary Quite Contrary, and after a few more successful roles, won critical praise for her part as a young suicide in Outward Bound.
In the U.S. Hahn’s Outward-Bound approach inspired an English and Arts Curriculum known as EL Education. From 2009, U.S schools adopted the ELA curriculum after the formation of the Common Core State Standards Initiative. In Britain, former conservative Education secretary Nicky Morgan voiced a need for a greater curricular emphasis on character building. At the same time the educational advisor John Cridland and former shadow education minister Tristram Hunt began using phrases such as “rounded and grounded”, “resilience”, “team-building” and “communication skills” when discussing education.
In June 1940 the school was evacuated and the Gordonstoun estate was taken over by the army for use as barracks. The school was relocated temporarily to quarters in Aberdovey in Mid Wales when Lord Davies, a parent of two pupils, allowed the school to use one of his houses. The buildings were insufficient, and finances and pupil numbers began to drop. In 1941 by Hahn and Lawrence Holt with the support of the Blue Funnel Line, founded Outward Bound, based on the educational approach of Gordonstoun.

Born to parents of Caribbean ancestry, Durham has lived in Scotland for a number of years. He has worked as an Outward Bound Instructor, and as a whitewater raft guide and kayak instructor. After receiving an MFA from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1996, he taught at the University of Maryland and University of Massachusetts Amherst. He was the MacLean Distinguished Visiting Writer at The Colorado College and was an associate professor at Cal State University, Fresno and an adjunct professor at Hampshire College.
A $3,000 train station, described as a "natty and attractive building", was constructed in 1887 at the temporary end of the Ballona railroad line outward bound from Los Angeles. The tracks were to continue west through the Centinela ranch to the ocean. The 18.03-mile line was opened for business on September 7, 1887, with stops (from northeast to southwest) at Ballona Junction, Nadeau Park, Baldwin, Slauson, Wildeson, Hyde Park, Inglewood, Danville, Mesmer, and Port Ballona. A train left Los Angeles at 9:15 a.m.
Hahn settled in Scotland, where he founded Gordonstoun with Sir Lawrence Holt on similar principles to the school in Salem. Later, Hahn converted to Christianity and became a communicant member of the Church of England in 1945 and preached in the Church of Scotland. He also started an international organisation of schools, now called Round Square. Hahn was also involved in the foundation of the Outward Bound Organisation, Atlantic College in Wales and the wider United World College movement, and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
Having just completed her overhaul at the Gulf Tampa Drydock Company, which included overhaul of the main propulsion generators, Blackthorn was outward bound from Tampa Bay on the night of 28 January 1980. Meanwhile, the tanker Capricorn, owned by Kingston Shipping Company and operated by Apex Marine Corporation of New York, was standing (traveling with right-of-way) into the bay. Blackthorns captain, Lieutenant Commander George Sepel had departed the bridge to investigate a problem with the newly installed propulsion shaft. Ensign John Ryan had the conn.

Horsetalk obituary From 1947 to 1993, McKenzie was on the Board of the J R McKenzie Trust, which had been established by his father in 1940 to distribute a proportion of the profits from his businesses for the benefit of the people of New Zealand. For 23 years, McKenzie chaired the Trust. He set up two other grant-making bodies: the McKenzie Education Foundation and the Roy McKenzie Foundation. McKenzie was also patron of the Outward Bound Trust, and a councillor at the Council for Educational Research.
Charities that received support since inception include Save the Sound, Hole in the Wall Gang, Cancer Care, Outward Bound, Canine Companions, Builders Beyond Borders, Make a Wish, Courage to Speak, and Cardinal Sheehan Youth Center. In 2013, Kayak for a Cause elected to scuttle the fleet in a one-day kayak sale and donate the remaining proceeds to charities before changing its name and mission. The CAA Foundation intends to foster a unique community by providing networking, mentoring and resources for promising young entrepreneurs.
He and his family later initiated Key to Freedom, a project which tries to "find a route to market for products made by WIF." On 3 September 2012, the Duke of York was among a team of 40 people who abseiled down The Shard (tallest building in Europe) to raise money for educational charities the Outward Bound Trust and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund. In 2013, it was announced that the Duke was becoming the Patron of London Metropolitan University and the University of Huddersfield.
Kibuuka studied at the Outward Bound School in Kenya.“Uganda's Kibuuka Flies Norway's Flag”, Asia Africa Intelligence Wire, 30 April 2004 In 1968, he was one of the first blind people to ascend successfully to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, earning media attention as well as praise from the Ugandan Minister of Labour. Due to this event, he was invited to Norway by an "organisation promoting sports for the disabled". He arrived in Norway in 1972, a year after Idi Amin's rise to power in Uganda.
Relocating to Berkshire saw Hewan play minor counties cricket for Berkshire in 1946, making two appearances in the Minor Counties Championship. On the recommendation of Hone, he became the headmaster of Cranbrook School in Sydney. He accepted the position in November 1950, he relinquished his commission in the Royal Horse Artillery in July 1951, upon which he was granted the honorary rank of major. In Australia, he was a founding member of the Australian College of Education, and was a strong supporter of the Outward Bound movement.
Recommissioned on 17 September 1866, Sacramento was assigned to special service in Chinese and Japanese waters. Outward bound via the Cape of Good Hope, the sloop called at Madeira before arriving at Monrovia, Liberia. Sacramento embarked President Warner of Liberia, members of his government, and Maryland Senator John Marshall at Monrovia on 15 January for passage down the African coast to Cape Palmas. Subsequently, Sacramento proceeded southward, calling at St. George del Mina, Dutch Guinea; St. Thomas; St. Paul Loando; Cape Town; and Madras, India.
In June 1967, a team led by Dr. G. R. Patwardhan had the privilege of first ascent of Jogin III. On June 13 A ladies expedition team of Bharat Outward Bound Pioneers of Pune, reached the summit of Jogin III. They set up four camps in between base camp and summit. Dr. Miss K.B. Sorab and Sherpa Chewang Thondup reached the summit from Camp IV. Girivihar A club from Bombay, India made a joint expedition to Jogin I and III led by (Miss) Neeta Bhoir.
When she worked as an admissions director at Dartmouth, she noticed that most essays were only read for three minutes. Some too-common essay types were the "outward bound" essay about how a person discovered their inner grit while hiking tough mountains or the "community service" essay about how a student discovered, while working among disadvantaged peoples, that "all persons were the same." Admissions officers seek to learn how a person thinks, what kind of person they are, and their level of intellectual promise.
Braidwood House was also briefly home to the Airborne Initiative, formerly of Glengonnar outside Abington, who specialised in outward-bound style training for young offenders. However the Airborne's funding was subsequently withdrawn by the Scottish Executive, after the airing of a controversial BBC documentary Chancers. Many houses have been built in Braidwood in the past couple of years, primarily on the former sites of the vehicle dismantlers of Alan Gray at Nellfield. The "Nellfield Garage" petrol station is still functioning along with a shop.
In the 19th century, it was the work of ship-brokers to procure goods on freight or a charter for ships outward bound. They also went through the formalities of entering and clearing vessels at the customs-house. They collected the freight on vessels brought into port and took an active hand in the management of all business matters between ship-owners and merchants, whether shippers or consignees, for which they were paid a fee. In major British ports, ship-brokers were also usually insurance-brokers.
This play remained popular with college theatre groups into the 1960s, well past Vane's death in Hastings in 1963 at age 75, and thanks to television showings of Between Two Worlds, it remained out there in some form before the general public. Outward Bound also served as the unofficial inspiration for the made-for-TV movie Haunts of the Very Rich (1972), directed by Paul Wendkos, and it was still being revived by professional regional theatre companies throughout the 1990s and into the 21st century.
Whaling voyage: Although some sources report that African Queen made a whaling voyage to the Brazil Banks under the command of R. Buckle, it is clear from the above information that she went slaving instead. However, in 1800 African Queen, Benjamin Cook, master, did go whaling to the Brazil Banks. While outward bound African Queen lost two boats and five men in a storm near Trinidad. In April 1800 she stopped at Rio de Janeiro to get sailors, and wood to replace the lost boats.
The Sedgeley property also included a servant's cottage (the Porter's House), designed by Latrobe, which still exists. Though Latrobe spent nearly a decade in Philadelphia, designing numerous buildings, the Sedgeley cottage is the only building of his that remains in Philadelphia. For more than a century, the Porter's House was used by the Park Guard and served as a jail. It was rescued from demolition and converted to office space in the 1990s by the Fairmount Park Historic Preservation Trust and is currently occupied by Outward Bound.
Lowe worked for the Colorado Outward Bound School in his earlier years. Lowe is credited with introducing ice climbing in the Winter X Games as well as starting the Ouray Ice Festival. He also was the organizer in Snowbird (Utah) in 1988, of the first international rock climbing competition ever held in the US. Lowe received an Honorary Lifetime Membership in the American Alpine Club, the club's highest honors, for his climbing achievements, contributions to the climbing community, and vision. He was also awarded Honorary Lifetime Membership in the Alpine Club of the United Kingdom.
Tromp gathered a fleet of 96 ships to attack Ayscue, but southerly winds kept him in the North Sea. Turning north to pursue Blake, Tromp caught up with the English fleet off the Shetland Islands, but a storm scattered his ships and there was no battle. On 26 August 1652, an outward-bound Dutch convoy with an escort of director's ships from Zeeland commanded by Michiel de Ruyter, who held the rank of commandeur, broadly equivalent to commodore was sighted by Ayscue, with a more numerous squadron of warships and armed merchant ships.
Her final success in American waters was to sink the Mexican tanker . U-564 arrived back in Brest on 6 June, having spent 64 days at sea and sunk four ships, for , and damaged two ships, for . U-564 repeated the exercise on her next patrol, departing Brest on 6 July to operate off the coast of South America. Whilst outward-bound across the Atlantic, Suhren came across convoy OS-34 near the Azores, and on 19 July sank the British merchant , and damaged the (sank 1 August whilst under tow back to the UK).
In 1974, a small group of faculty established an academic year-long program similar to Outward Bound programs known as Grassroots Project in Vermont at Sterling Institute. By 1983, Sterling had developed into an accredited college offering an Associate of Arts degree in resource management with full accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges granted in 1987. Since 1997, Sterling College has been accredited as a four-year college. It awards Bachelor of Arts degrees in Ecology, Environmental Humanities, Outdoor Education, and Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems.
JF Fuller adapted the Outward Bound motto, "To Serve, To Strive and not To Yield," from the poem "Ulysses" by Alfred Lord Tennyson: ... Come, my friends. Tis not too late to seek a newer world. On one of these two voyages Captain Younghusband suffered some disciplinary problems. On the outward bound leg of the voyage he disciplined some seamen for having abused the steward over the food served at a meal rather than having complained to the captain. Next day the bosun reported that a number of ropes had been cut in such a way that it could have endangered the rigging and the ship. On the homeward leg, prior to reaching St Helena, Younghusband had 11 seamen punished for attempting to prevent the flogging of one of their number.

Fifty years later, in September 1991, a Coloradoan named Jim Rowe traveled by land from home - where he had been working as an instructor for Colorado Outward Bound School (COBS) - to Costa Rica. The first year in Costa Rica he focused on learning first-hand indigenous culture, rainforest ecology, and Costa Rican geography. He returned the second year with a monolithic raft and some SCUBA diving equipment to begin an adventure activities company, using the same boat to run SCUBA and river trips.K. In the 1970s and 1980s, a variety of programmes were created in the wake of increased unemployment in the United Kingdom, targeting youth skills acquisition, and youth rehabilitation. The courses were developed alongside the Trident Trust, and focused on youth who had not completed secondary school. The trust became an Accredited Training Centre by the UK government, and in 1977 became a member of the Development Training Advisory Group, alongside Outward Bound, Endeavour Training and the YMCA. The group was a consortium that encouraged quality practices in outdoor education courses and youth training.
Banavie train station, with Ben Nevis in the distance The West Highland railway runs through the far north of the county, stopping at Locheilside, Loch Eil Outward Bound, Corpach and Banavie, before carrying on to Mallaig in Inverness-shire. A branch of the line also goes to Oban, calling at Dalmally, Loch Awe, Falls of Cruachan, Taynuilt and Connel Ferry. Numerous ferries link the islands of the Inner Hebrides to each other and the Scottish mainland. Many of the islands also contain small airstrips enabling travel by air.
Founded in 1898 and one of the longest- running cadet units in Australia, the TAS Cadet Unit is part of the Australian Army Cadet Corps. This activity is compulsory for students in Years 8 to 10, and is voluntary for Years 11 onwards. It involves drill and ceremonial work, and Outward Bound training. A Ceremonial Guard provides a catafalque party each year at ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day services in Armidale and at school, and the TAS Cadet band operates for the annual cadet unit passing out parade.
Yet there is something nagging at the very back of his mind; in his confusion he believes there is something important he needs to remember but it just won't come to him. After a few days convalescence at home, Terry is still eager to find some answers to the nagging doubts which linger in his mind. He decides to return to the outward bound centre and accepts a lift from a vaguely familiar gentleman - called Dr Jensen. Thereafter the plot thickens and, at one point, Terry's life is left hanging in the balance.
The village is centred on the small St. Bega's Church and hall. Since 1950 the Outward Bound Trust has owned Gate House mansion near the centre of the village, which they operate as an outdoor adventure and education centre for young people. In late summer the grounds of Gate House are the venue for the annual Eskdale Fête. The Gate House grounds used to encompass the Giggle Alley Forest, to the northwest of the village, which is now open to the public and contains of woodland, including a secluded Japanese garden designed by Thomas Mawson.
Thus, in 1882, the year before the opening of the East Mitchell railway station, Roma railway station recorded the highest quantity of outward bound wool on the Western Line at 6,687 bales. In 1884, this figure dropped to 1,308 bales with the new terminus at East Mitchell recording 9,545, the largest quantity on the western line. However, as the rail opened to places west of Mitchell, the wool traffic through the station reduced. After the opening of Morven railway station in March 1887, wool leaving Mitchell Station dwindled to 774 bales.
To participate in the event, the organization required that paddlers be "comfortable in very open waters", and in reasonably good shape. All first- time participants were required to attend a kayak safety course a few weeks before the launch. Each year, the KFAC organization picked five charities in Connecticut and Long Island. In 2007, for instance, the charities were The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, Outward Bound of Connecticut, Cancer Care of Connecticut, Courage to Speak Foundation, a drug prevention organization for children; and Save the Sound, an environmental organization.
The son of schoolteachers, Potts grew up in Wichita, Kansas and graduated from Wichita North High School in 1989. He began college at Friends University, spending his summers working for an Outward Bound-style wilderness camp in Colorado and hopping freight trains across the Pacific Northwest. He later transferred to George Fox University, where he graduated with a degree in writing and literature in 1993. After graduation Potts worked as a landscaper in Seattle for a year before embarking on an 8-month Volkswagen Vanagon journey around North America.
Gatehouse School is a co-educational independent school based in Sewardstone Road in Bethnal Green in East London, educating pupils from the ages of three to eleven years. The youngest classes follow a Montessori-style education, but the influence of the national curriculum has brought the older classes more into line with mainstream schools. The school admits children from the full ability range, with an emphasis on the Arts, including visits to museums and theatres, as well as sports and outward bound activities. The school was founded in Smithfield, London by Phyllis Wallbank, in 1948.
Two of the smaller ships in Grenville's fleet, the Brave and the Roe, were deemed unsuitable for combat, and White was permitted to take them to Roanoke. The ships departed on April 22, but the captains of the ships attempted to capture several Spanish ships on the outward-bound voyage (in order to improve their profits). On May 6 they were attacked by French pirates near Morocco. Nearly two dozen of the crew were killed, and the supplies bound for Roanoke were looted, leaving the ships to return to England.
The Owl, a Birmingham newspaper, wrote the following: > The poor wretches were treated like beasts and flogged unmercifully, and > their fearful experiences on an outward bound convict ship, so vividly > painted by William Clark Russell, were but foretastes of the horrors > awaiting them in the penal colonies of Australia. The first changes occurred in 1900 when a turntable was installed. Around 1910 a carriage siding was added to next to the run-round loop, followed by the construction of the South Jetty served by two long sidings. The station's heyday was around the time of the railway grouping when it saw substantial passenger traffic in the form of holidaymakers and daytrippers to the coast, with many guests staying at the nearby Metropole Hotel. Outward-bound fish was the main freight traffic, which often reached 1,000 wagonloads during a Spring season.
Because of the close proximity to a large city and the potentially large impact this causes the park, the park's environmental education program grew rapidly in the first three years in existence: 100 students (2006), 900 students (2007), and over 2,000 students (2008). The park administration was trained by Outward Bound Romania on experiential education strategies in the summer of 2007. The park has the Romanian park system's first low ropes course and has received notoriety in Romanian national news and within the park system for its education efforts.
Canotia departed San Francisco, California, 6 October 1944 for Pearl Harbor, where she arrived 16 October. She provided target service to ships training at this great base until 5 February 1945, when she was outward bound for action waters. Arriving at Eniwetok 15 February, she reported for duty with the U.S. 5th Fleet, and sailed to Iwo Jima, where she had mooring and salvage duty from 28 February to 12 April. The first portion of this duty came as bitter action raged ashore, and enemy air attacks still menaced American shipping.
Tonie and Kristopher Gomez presented a plan to the Hillsboro School District in March 2003 to establish a charter school using programs created by Outward Bound. The couple hoped the project-based teaching would be successful for their son, and hoped the planned school would open in fall 2004 with 100 students. The plan called for the school to eventually serve grades one through eight, starting with one through five the first year. Sixth grade would be added in year two, and the two remaining grades the following year.
The English merchants, which included ships of the Levant Company, were sailing for various ports but had banded together to sail through the heavily Spanish-dominated Straits of Gibraltar. Among these ships was the Centurion, a large armed merchant vessel but weakly manned. The Centurion arrived at Marseilles, on her outward bound voyage after delivering her goods, she remained there for more than five weeks, taking in lading, and then intended to return to England. When she was ready to depart from Marseilles, there were other smaller sundry ships.
Captain Robert Anderson and Swallow left the Downs on 26 June 1788 and Falmouth on 26 August, reaching the Cape on 5 November and arriving at Calcutta on 25 January 1789. Outward bound, she passed kedgeree on 22 February, reached Madras on 9 March, Negapatam on 29 April, Madras again on 4 May, and Calcutta again on 12 June. She left Diamond Harbour on 19 August, reached St Helena on 28 October, and arrived at the Downs on 10 January 1790. She was at her moorings on 17 January.
Local villagers' first contact with Europeans came in 1770. The Spanish exploratory party led by Gaspar de Portolá, returning from its journey up the coast as far as San Francisco, entered the valley from the northwest. On the outward bound journey, the explorers had traveled up the Los Angeles River, then north to Castaic Junction, then followed the Santa Clara River back down to the coast. On the return trip, they sought a shorter route to the San Fernando Valley, and were guided by natives up and over the Conejo Grade.

One of the first of these programs was Salesmanship Club Camp, based in Dallas, Texas, founded by Campbell Loughmiller in 1946. His philosophy of adventure in therapy included the theory that the "…perception of danger and immediate natural consequences for [a] lack of cooperation on the part of [participants]…[after confronting danger] built self-esteem, [while] suffering natural consequences taught the real need for cooperation."Berman & Davis-Berman 1995, p. 3 His ideas informed some adventure therapy programs. This period also saw the creation of Outward Bound in the 1940s by Kurt Hahn.
NOLS was founded in 1965 by Paul Petzoldt, a world-famous mountaineer and a member of the Army's 10th Mountain Division, with the backing of three affluent Lander residents (Ed Breece, legislator and Petzoldt's brother-in- law; Jack Nicholas, legislator; and William Ericson, physician). Breece, Nicholas, and Ericson formed the nucleus of the early board of trustees. Petzoldt was also an early Outward Bound Chief Instructor, and he wanted to establish a school which promoted concentrating on refining outdoor leadership skills. The first facility opened in 1965 in Lander, Wyoming at Sinks Canyon.
He was buried at sea in a lead- lined coffin, off Buenaventura Island near Porto Bello. Baskerville assumed command of the fleet and, after contemplating a repeat attack against Santa Marta he decided against it and ordered his disheartened men toward Santigao. According to the information they had, a fleet of sixty sail had been sent out from Spain against them, and this they believed would be stationed at the Yucatan Channel to intercept their homeward course. It was therefore agreed to hold together and attempt to escape by the outward bound route.
Expeditionary Learning Schools are models of comprehensive school reform based on the educational ideas of German educator Kurt Hahn, the founder of Outward Bound. There are more than 150 Expeditionary Learning Schools in 30 US states and the District of Columbia. They are exemplified by project-based learning expeditions, where students engage in interdisciplinary, in-depth study of compelling topics, in groups and in their community, with assessment coming through cumulative products, public presentations, and portfolios. According to the ELS Web site students undertake tasks requiring perseverance, fitness, craftsmanship, imagination, self-discipline, and significant achievement.
The Academy has produced more than 50 national champions in fencing, biathle, biathlon, triathlon, tetrathlon and pentathlon. The diving partnership with Plymouth Diving saw Tom Daley become World Champion in 2009 and take bronze in the 2012 London Olympics. At the age of 13, Victoria Vincent was the youngest member of Team England in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The Whiteworks Outward Bound centre on Dartmoor has a 20-bed bunkhouse and the school owns further grounds featuring rugby and cricket pitches at Delgany, Derriford, about two miles north of the Ford Park campus.
Outward bound from Biscay on her second patrol, U-664 made a chance sighting of the slow convoy and radioed its position to base. Karl Dönitz ordered Graef to shadow the convoy while other boats were rounded up to form Wolfpack Sturmbock. However the boats were well scattered and failed to make contact with the convoy, so on the night of 21 February 1943, Graef became impatient with waiting and decided to attack alone. With one spread of torpedoes, Graef sank the American steamer Rosario and the Panamanian tanker H H Rogers.
Lawrence Durning Holt (17 November 1882 - 1961) was a businessman with interests in shipping and co-founder of the Outward Bound in 1941, along with Kurt Hahn, an educator. Lawrence Durning Holt was born in 1882 to Robert Durning Holt and Lawrencina Potter, a daughter of businessmen Richard Potter. Holt was part of a close-knit family that had business interests in the Blue Funnel Shipping Line and its associated companies, such as the Ocean Steam Ship Company. By the 1920s, Holt was a partner in and managing director of the Ocean Steam Ship Company.
The firm during the Confederate war in America were the largest European supporters of the southern states. Their ships, outward bound with military stores and freighted home with cotton, were the most enterprising of blockade-runners between 1861 and 1865. Isaac's eldest son Henry, who died at Nassau, West Indies, during the war, had much to do with this branch of the business. Having raised a regiment of volunteers from among the workmen of his own factory at Northampton, Isaac was rewarded with the military rank of major.
Hammond grew up in Manchester, a seaside town on Boston’s North Shore, where he learned to sail and haul lobster traps in the waters off Cape Ann. A graduate of the Groton School in Groton, Massachusetts, Hammond went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Masters of Business Administration in Entrepreneurial Studies at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. He also spent a summer in his late teens at Hurricane Island Outward Bound School off the coast of Maine.

Every year after, Casco Bay added a grade level, with 70 students per grade, and the school now has all grade levels attending (9-12) with 100 students per grade. The school has won numerous awards, and in 2012 was named the 8th best high school in Maine, and in 2018, it was named one of Maine’s top high schools by US News and World Report, and the #5 high school in Maine by Niche.
Deal also provided a convenient landing place for passengers for London, potentially saving a long wait for a fair wind to finish a voyage; it also allowed outward bound ships to be caught up with and joined. One problem with the Downs was the quality of the holding ground of the anchorage. It consists of chalk, which is not the best material. Hence it was common for ships in the roadstead to drag their anchors in strong winds, especially those from north round to east northeast or from the southeast, as these directions were less sheltered.
He sailed from Portsmouth on 28 June 1800, bound for Bengal. Herculean was part of a convoy of eight vessels under the escort of the frigate .Naval Chronicle, Vol. 4, p. 164. Herculean arrived at Calcutta on 19 January 1801. Outward bound, she was at Kedgeree on 10 March, and reached Bencoolen on 7 May. Homeward bound, she reached St Helena on 27 August and arrived at the Downs on 31 October. Herculean underwent repairs in 1802. EIC voyage #2 (1802–1804): Captain Samuel Butler sailed from the Downs on 4 May 1802, bound for Bombay and Bengal.
Griffiths found himself in trouble with the law during his adolescence, and at the age of 15 he was sent on an Outward Bound course in Snowdonia in North Wales. He found the experience uplifting and refocused him to work harder at gaining an education, eventually gaining a degree in English. Griffith spent several years taking on a number of short term menial jobs before he was accepted into Aberystwyth University to study for a PhD in post-war poetry, but failed to complete the course. He followed this by researching his first novel, following disaffected and marginalised characters, living ordinary lives.

In his late teens Nossek was called up for military service in World War II and as the war reached its end, in 1945 he found himself on an army base in Colombo, Sri Lanka. A determining moment for the rest of his life was the day his attempt to gain admittance to the base amateur theatre company was rebuffed on the grounds that this was reserved to officers. Nossek and friend Peter Coxhead set up a rival organization and on Friday, 13 April 1945 The Theatre Club was opened. The first production was of Sutton Vane's Outward Bound.
He was born in Hoylake, Cheshire, England, to Henry James Hugill and Florence Mary Hugill (née Southwood). His sailing career started in 1922, and he retired to dry land in 1945. He notably served as the shantyman on the Garthpool, the last British commercial sailing ship (a "Limejuice Cape Horner"), on her last voyage which ended when she was wrecked on 11 November 1929 off the Cape Verde Islands. After four and a half years as a German prisoner of war during World War II, Hugill was an instructor at the Outward Bound Sea School in Aberdyfi from 1950 to 1975.

After a few years as an Outward bound Instructor and Scout in the Eastern Highlands, Mkondo decided to continue his education. He enrolled at Bulawayo Polytechnic College to train in hotel catering, a course that was sponsored by the Rhodesian Breweries (Natbrew) and Anglo American Corporation. He was one of two black students accepted at the time for this course. The student who achieved the highest marks was to be offered a scholarship to study for a Bachelor of Science degree in Hotel Management at Blackpool Technical College (now Blackpool and The Fylde College) in the United Kingdom.
He was voted Yell King of his senior class according to his sister Lennie. He later attended Pasadena City College, Pasadena, California graduating in 1940. He was a Yell King on the Pep Commission, a member of the Players Guild, where he was in the cast of their annual fall presentation of, "Bachelor Born." He was also a member of Delta Psi Omega, a national honorary dramatics fraternity performing in their annual spring production, "Outward Bound." J.C. graduated in spring, 1940. He enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve as an Apprentice Seaman at Los Angeles on September 6, 1940.

The core objective of the Wilderness Risk Management Conference (WRMC) is to offer an outstanding educational experience to help adventure travel and ecotourism companies, clubs, and organizations mitigate the risks inherent in exploring, working, teaching, and recreating in wild places. The WRMC was founded in 1994 by a collaboration of organizations that had a stake in how risk is managed in outdoor recreation and outdoor education. The founding group consisted of representatives from NOLS, Outward Bound USA, Wilderness Medical Society, Exum Mountain Guides, Association for Experiential Education, National Park Service, National Safety Network, American Alpine Club, and Outdoor Network.
On 19 August 1915, U-24 sank the White Star liner , outward bound for America, south of Kinsale. He fired a single torpedo which struck the liner aft, and she sank within 10 minutes, with the loss of 44 passengers and crew, 3 of whom were American. Following speculation that the US would sever relations with Germany, on 28 August the Chancellor issued new orders to submarine commanders and relayed them to Washington. The new orders stated that until further notice, all passenger ships could only be sunk after warning and the saving of passengers and crews.
As president and board member of the Autzen Foundation, he is recognized for helping distribute many large donations to charitable organizations located mainly in Oregon. The foundation's focus, while under his and his father's leadership, has been to help youth services, education, the arts and nature. Autzen also chaired and participated as a board member in a number of other prominent Oregon philanthropic and non-profit organizations. Autzen chaired the University of Oregon Foundation, he also served on the boards of the Japanese Garden Society, the High Desert Museum, the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Pacific Crest Outward Bound and Good Samaritan Hospital.
Although public attention shifted to rock music from the mid 1960s, folk singers such as Joan Baez and Tom Paxton continued to address political concerns in their music and activism. Baez's 1974 Gracias a la Vida album was a response to events in Chile and included versions of songs by Nueva Canción Chilena singer- songwriters Violeta Parra and Victor Jara. Paxton albums such as Outward Bound and Morning Again continued to highlight political issues. They were joined by other activist musicians such as Holly Near, Ray Korona, Charlie King, Anne Feeney, Jim Page, Utah Phillips and more recently David Rovics.
Rednour departed Ulithi Atoll on 23 April 1945, overtaking a convoy which arrived off the Hagushi beaches of Okinawa on 26 April 1945. She supported the Okinawa campaign, patrolling off Kerama Retto through the following month and assisted in the screening of inward- and outward-bound convoys. She also assisted in repelling almost constant air raids. On the night of 27 May 1945, Rednour assumed an antiaircraft patrol station 14 nautical miles (26 kilometers)west of Zampa-Misaki (Point Bolo), Okinawa, in company with high-speed transport USS Loy (APD-56) and destroyer escort USS Eisele (DE-34).
In Kashmir, Johnson met Paul Petzoldt (the mountaineer, Outward Bound instructor, and founder of the National Outdoor Leadership School), and invited him to the Dera where Petzoldt received initiation from Johnson's guru, served as Johnson's assistant in the ashram clinic, even helping in surgical operations. A tussle with Petzold led to the accidental death of Johnson.
In 1945 he was the Liberal candidate for the Blackpool South constituency. From 1945 to 1946 Liddell Hart was assistant editor to the Preparatory Commission of the United Nations, and from 1946 to 1947 was a political affairs officer of the United Nations Organisation, based in New York. He next joined the Control Service for Germany, attached to the British Army of the Rhine, and the administrative staff headquarters of the Allied Control Council (British sector). He worked for the original Outward Bound Sea School in 1949 and as the House of Commons lobby correspondent of The Yorkshire Observer from 1949 to 1950.
Starting in 2000, GSUSA began collaborating with Outward Bound to offer small-group no-experience- required high adventure trips in addition to the trips run by GSUSA and Girl Scout councils across the country and abroad. The number of participants allowed on a trip varied widely, often as low as 8-10, sometimes over one thousand, depending on the nature and location of the trip. In order to be considered for a trip, girls had to fill out an application, find references, and have an interview. Acceptance was competitive, with even the smallest trips frequently having several hundred applicants.
In December 1951, Geelong Grammar School announced that it had an option on a piece of land near Mount Timbertop where they would conduct normal schooling combined with outdoor activities that would foster independence and initiative. The concept was the initiative of headmaster James Darling, who was inspired by the likes of Kurt Hahn and England's Outward Bound schools. The Timbertop campus opened at the start of the 1953 school year with 40 students who would be building sheds, paths, roads and a plantation. The campus consists of 2000 acres with a frontage onto the Delatite River.
Loaded to capacity with cargo and passengers, Fillmore sailed from San Francisco 25 April 1945, bound for Espiritu Santo. Here she landed men and cargo, and loaded aircraft engines, spare parts, and a few passengers for Samar. She departed the Philippines 31 May to embark men and material bound for Pearl Harbor at Biak, Humboldt Bay, and Ulithi, and after exchanging passengers at Pearl Harbor, sailed 29 June for San Francisco. Outward bound with troops 12 July 1945 Fillmore landed them at Leyte 2 August, and served there as receiving ship until the surrender of Japan.
He was appointed as Headmaster of Geelong Grammar School in 1930 and the student population of the school grew from 370 to 1139 at the time of his retirement. He was a founding member of the Headmasters' Conference of the Independent Schools of Australia and was its sixth Chairman. During his time at Geelong Darling set up the Outward Bound campus Timbertop in the foothills of the Australian Alps between Mansfield and Mt Buller where academic work was supplemented by a wide range of physical activity. Notable pupils included future prime minister John Gorton and Charles, Prince of Wales.
Proceeding thence to Bayonne, New Jersey, on 4 January 1944 for upkeep and availability, Albemarle returned to Norfolk on 17 January and prepared for a voyage to San Juan. While outward-bound, however, on 18 January, the seaplane tender fouled a buoy in a thick fog and put about for repairs. Drydocked on 20 January, Albemarle sailed again for her original destination, San Juan, the following day. Subsequently, touching at Trinidad and Recife, and retracing her path calling at Trinidad and San Juan on the return leg of the passage, Albemarle returned to Norfolk on 23 February for availability.
Emerging from the yard on 15 August, the seaplane tender proceeded to Bayonne, to load cargo. Sailing via Norfolk, the ship visited the familiar bases at San Juan, Trinidad, Recife and Guantanamo Bay before returning to NOB, Norfolk, on 29 September. After loading cargo at Bayonne (12–17 October), Albemarle headed south for the supply run to San Juan, Trinidad and Recife. Outward-bound the voyage proved uneventful; however, while loading ammunition and cargo at San Juan for the return leg of the voyage, an electrical fire damaged the ship's main distribution board, putting Albemarles lighting and ventilation systems out of commission.
The Gourock Times of 6 September 1940 broke the story about the child evacuee ship being torpedoed, and the rescued children from the ship being safely brought to port on the Clyde.The Gourock Times, 6 September 1940 HMS Sabre (H18) was one of the destroyers rescuing evacuated children from SS Volendam, between 30 August - 1 September 1940. She was in an outward bound convoy OB 205 for Canada, carrying 879 passengers and 273 crew members. This included 320 children with their escorts under the Children's Overseas Reception Board scheme some as young as five, together with 286 other passengers.
Sailing operations are simplest in interplanetary orbits, where altitude changes are done at low rates. For outward bound trajectories, the sail force vector is oriented forward of the Sun line, which increases orbital energy and angular momentum, resulting in the craft moving farther from the Sun. For inward trajectories, the sail force vector is oriented behind the Sun line, which decreases orbital energy and angular momentum, resulting in the craft moving in toward the Sun. It is worth noting that only the Sun's gravity pulls the craft toward the Sun—there is no analog to a sailboat's tacking to windward.
Shifted then to the Gulf of Mexico, Penobscot joined the blockade ships cruising off the Texas coast. In early January 1864, she provided support for troops landed on the Matagorda Peninsula on 31 December. On 28 February she seized Lilly, a British schooner attempting to run the blockade at Velasco, Texas, to deliver her cargo of powder, and the next day captured schooners Stingray and John Douglas, outward bound with cargoes of cotton. On 12 July, off Galveston, Texas, the "ninety-day" gunboat intercepted the schooner James Williams with a cargo of medicine, coffee, and liquor.
On 1 May a large outward-bound convoy for the West Indies, under the protection of three ships of the line, sailed from the Downs and being six leagues to the westward of Beachy, they fell in with the French squadron from Dunkirk, commanded by Claude de Forbin. This squadron consisted of 7 sail of the line and 6 privateers.Troude 259 The action began when 3 French ships, Griffon, Blackoal and La Dauphine, grappled Hampton Court and killed Captain Clements. Commodore Wyld took five of his largest merchant ships into his line and boldly met the attack of the French ships.
In 1962, he joined SANE: The Committee for a SANE Nuclear Policy, an organization he would later lead. Approached by Sargent Shriver in 1961 to run the first training programs for the Peace Corps, Coffin took up the task and took a temporary leave from Yale, working to develop a rigorous training program modeled on Outward Bound and supervising the building of a training camp in Puerto Rico. He used his pulpit as a platform for like-minded crusaders, hosting the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Nelson Mandela, among others.
On 28 June 1956, Everett F. Larson arrived at Long Beach, California, her home port for duty in the Pacific Fleet. Operations off the coast of California, and north to Seattle, Washington, prepared her for deployments to the Far East in 1957, 1958, 1959, and 1960. During these she served on patrol duty off Taiwan, exercised off Okinawa and in the Philippines, and acted as escort and plane guard for the aircraft carriers of Task Force 77 (TF 77). Outward bound for her 1958 tour, she called at Pago Pago, American Samoa, and Auckland, New Zealand.

Hatfill now owns a colonial-style brick home in Marion County, Florida as well as a property in the El Yunque rain forest, in Puerto Rico, where he has run a military-style Outward Bound-like program. Hatfill chairs the Asymmetrical Biodiversity Studies and Observation Group (ABSOG) in Malaysia, a not-for- profit trust he has established to support his drug discovery boat mission.
On the outward-bound voyage, she visited the Marquesas before arriving at Pago Pago on 27 August and served there until 7 October when she weighed anchor to return to the west coast of the United States. En route home, she stopped at Honolulu, Hawaii, before arriving back in San Francisco on 2 December. She then entered the Mare Island Navy Yard for repairs which kept her from returning to sea until 14 March 1881. Under the command of George Belknap, she then began another extended cruise highlighted by calls at a number of Central and South American ports along the Pacific coast.
The Rock and Ice Club was an English climbing club formed by a group of Manchester climbers. The group regularly climbed on the weekends and met in the week to discuss the past weekends climbs and plan their future trips. This loose group crystallized on 26 September 1951 with founding members Nat Allen, Doug Belshaw, Joe Brown, Don Chapman, Don Cowan, Jack Gill, Pete Greenall, Ray Greenall, Ron Moseley, Merrick (Slim) Sorrell, (Instructor Ullswater Outward Bound School) Dick White, Don Whillans. Notables amongst these founders (in particular Don Whillans and Joe Brown) were at the forefront of British climbing at their time.
Calhoun grew up on a llama farm in Cornwall, Connecticut and got her degree in Environmental Science from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. As a young adult she worked a variety of physical labor jobs on trail crews and as an outdoor educator for Outward Bound and Youth Corps. In 2004 she started developing a design for women's work pants and in 2006 she opened the Red Ants Pants store in rural White Sulphur Springs, MT that sells heavy-duty work wear made to fit diverse female bodies. The brand is named after red ants "because female ants do all the work".
Ross was heavily involved in the community, acting as President of the Scouts Association of Hong Kong and Vice-President of Outward Bound since its inception in the sixties. In a more social capacity, he was chairman of the Hong Kong Club in 1962 and Chieftain of the St Andrew's Society in 1969. In 1968 for his services in Hong Kong he was awarded by the Queen with the award of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). In 1973 in the 1973 Birthday Honours he was awarded the honour of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
Governor Lachlan Macquarie on 30 April 1810 requested the British Government supply the colony with two brigs (colonial ships) that would not be subject to the control of the Admiralty. The British government provided Kangaroo and Emu. The American privateer Holkar, captained by J. Rolland, captured Emu in 1812 on her outward-bound voyage. Lieutenant Charles Jefferys (or Jeffreys), received a letter of marque on 1 March 1813. Kangaroo arrived in Sydney on 10 January 1814 after a passage of seven months and eight days from England. On 28 February 1814 Kangaroo took off the last inhabitants of Norfolk Island.
Other guests whom Cromwell dined with there included Barbara Stanwyck and then-husband Frank Fay, and William Haines and his partner Jimmie Shields. During the freewheeling heyday of West L.A. nightlife in the late 30s, Cromwell is said by author Charles Higham to have carried on a sometime, though obviously very discreet, affair with aviator and businessman Howard Hughes. In 1939, Cromwell again tried his luck on the stage in a regional production of Sutton Vane's play Outward Bound featuring Dorothy Jordan as his co-star. The cast of the production at the Los Angeles Biltmore Theater also included Cora Witherspoon and Reginald Denny.
2nd capture: During the War of 1812 the British Admiralty wrote to the United States Government that Great Britain would not accept as valid cartel agreements made on the high seas. On 10 June 1813, captured the outward-bound Falmouth packet , Captain Aaron Groub Blewett, which managed to throw her mails overboard before President could send a prize crew aboard. President made a cartel of Duke of Montrose, putting all of Presidents prisoners from three earlier captures on board and then sending her and her now 79 passengers and crew into Falmouth under the command of an American officer. She arrived back at Falmouth on 16 June.
Because of his belief in the efficacy of small expeditions as compared to military-style 'sieges', Shipton was stepped down from the leadership of the 1953 Everest expedition, along with Andrew Croft, in favour of Major John Hunt: "I leave London absolutely shattered", he wrote. Between the years 1953 and 1957 he worked at a variety of jobs. Shipton worked as Warden of the Outward Bound Mountain school at Eskdale until the failure of his marriage with his wife, Diana. He worked on farms, collected his CBE, and in 1957 led a group of students from the Imperial College of Science to the Karakoram.
Since 1993 she has served on the board of the Canadian Women's Foundation, serving as chair for 6 years. Franssen is a past board member of CIBC bank (15 years) and has also served on the boards of Women Moving Millions, Women's College Hospital, the Advisory Committee for the Dalai Lama's Visit to Canada, The World Wildlife Fund, The Salvation Army Advisory Board, Toronto Family Service Association, Outward Bound, York University Foundation, and Women's Funding Network. From 1991 to 2003, she served on the Board of Governors of York University. She has served on the Round Table on the Environment and the Economy as well as the International Human Rights Jury.
In "New Guys", Andy returns from Outward Bound manager training, making him become more "decisive and confident". When Andy tells Toby that he plans to fabricate an excuse to fire Nellie, Toby shoots down the idea as a violation of corporate policy, prompting Andy to tell Toby "I understand why Michael didn't like you." When Andy hosts a motivational exercise involving a tightrope, he insults Toby and Nellie in front of the staff. Since that time, Andy has been rude towards Toby in a manner that echoes Michael Scott's hatred of his harmless HR rep, though Toby seems much less affected by Andy's behavior than he was by Michael's.
Due to the success of the single week courses, Brathay Trust launched an extended four-week course in 1950. Scott felt that the Brathay programmes needed to diversify more to succeed, so decided to finance many additions to the Brathay estate, including a boathouse, a theatre and extra dormitories. Brathay sought to distinguish itself from the outdoor oriented charity Outward Bound, by focusing on a much broader range of activities. These courses were created after consultation with northern British industrial firms, who supported the courses as a way to bring out latent talent with the facilitation of well-rounded development for the youth of Postwar Britain.
TAS is a member of Round Square, an international organisation of more than 140 schools worldwide which subscribes to the philosophy of Kurt Hahn (1886-1974), a renowned educationalist, who founded the idea of experiential education through such initiatives as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and Outward Bound. The philosophy is based on five pillars or IDEALS: Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership and Service. The Round Square network affords member schools the opportunity to arrange local and international student and teacher exchanges on a regular basis between their schools. Students and staff also have the opportunity to participate in local and international community service projects and conferences.
This was accompanied by standard officers' headdress (complete with white band whilst at ATF). Following completion of their OIC, a newly appointed Pilot Officer Air Cadets would then receive their rank slide. Since Air Cadets officers would generally be responsible for running either a CCF(RAF) section or an Air Training Corps squadron/detached flight, successful applicants were required to demonstrate qualities of commitment, motivation, and some knowledge of the RAF and military/civil aviation, all underpinned by a willingness and aptitude to work with young people in an instructional environment. Many had educational or youth work experience and qualifications in specialist areas of outward bound youth work.
The story begins with 16-year-old Terry Connor sat alone in a cavern 100 feet underground whilst on a potholing expedition. The senior Outward Bound instructor, Alex, has long since been missing in the depths of the cavernous subterranean pot named 'Wilmer Deep' after going to retrieve a torch which Terry had dropped earlier. When Alex returns (without the torch) he is strangely convinced that he has been away for ten minutes but Terry knows that Alex has been away for more than two hours. Alex believes that Terry has suffered hallucinations, which he says can be a side-effect of the confined darkness of a cavern.

Within two days, newspapers related Captain Kendall's testimony of his ordering whistle warming blasts and evasive maneuvers as a fog bank closed between the vessels. The ship reached Pointe- au-Père, Quebec (or Father Point) near the town of Rimouski in the early hours of 29 May 1914, where the pilot disembarked. Empress of Ireland resumed a normal outward bound course of about N76E, and soon sighted the masthead lights of , a Norwegian collier, on her starboard bow at a distance of several miles. Likewise, Storstad, which was abreast of Métis Point and on a course W. by S., sighted Empress of Irelands masthead lights.
Most of the yard area now forms the factory and car park extension. The single track, owned by Network Rail, is still connected to the National Rail network via Whitemoor Junction near March, but locked off. New signalling was installed at the junction during late 2007Rail Magazine "Will rail return to the capital of the Fens?" for the benefit of outward bound engineering trains from the re-opened Whitemoor Yard, once the second biggest freight yard in Europe during World War II and now a stabling point for engineering trains.Railway strategies: Whitemoor yard gets green light The railway's infrastructure, including the level crossings, remains largely in place.
Upper Canada College owns and maintains an outdoor educational facility near the town of Norval, Ontario, on of property on the Credit River. The land was used by First Nations as camping and hunting grounds and Huron and Iroquois travelled along the Credit to Lake Ontario to trade with Europeans. By the early 19th century, the land supported farming; many remnants of this use remain, including apple orchards and artifacts, some of which were unearthed by students during simulated archaeological digs. Norval's main purpose is to teach college students about the natural environment, sustainability, and ecosystems through outdoor learning programs, some in conjunction with Outward Bound Canada.
Under the name of Peter Brand, Liddell Hart served in the French Foreign Legion as an ordinary legionnaire from 1950 to 1951, then in the Legion's First Foreign Cavalry Regiment in French Indo China. In 1952 he took a job with the Outward Bound Trust at Aberdyfi, Gwynedd, and from 1953 to 1954 worked in the Canadian oil industry. From 1955 to 1956 he was with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Toronto, before joining the Federation of British Industry from 1959 to 1960, when he was appointed Assistant Director of the Society of British Aircraft Constructors. In 1962 he became an Analyst in London for Gordon Rayment and Co. Ltd.
Ripplevale School Ripplevale School, according to the school's stated history, occupies the previous ancestral family home of Sir John French, who was born at the house and buried in the parish. Following French family occupation the building became a preparatory school, and later a hotel, and an approved school. The present school, which opened in 1970, later absorbed the village primary school in Ripple. Ripplevale School, which teaches the National Curriculum, states in its brochure that it caters especially for pupils with special needs and autism within small classes, and provides for The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, Outward Bound, college-based training, and for contact with small animals in a smallholding.
The schools included Barrow Boys Grammar School which opened in 1930 and Barrow Girls Grammar School in 1932. 186 students from Barrow Boys Grammar School died during combat in World War I and II and are commemorated on plaques in Furness Academy. Alumni of the grammar schools are known as 'Old Barrovians' The boys had a school song: Autumn gold and winter weather, summer due and bluebell spring, days afoot in Furness heather, these I know, these are mine, these are part of me till I. perish. Westaway the seas lie open, east away the sun rides high, outward bound in morning glory, free and ready here am I.
Between the wars, Empress of Russia resumed regular trans-Pacific crossings. Her first post-war voyage began on 10 April 1919; and the pre-war route was somewhat modified on this trip. On this occasion, she sailed from Vancouver to Manila outward bound; and she stopped at Vladivostok on the return voyage to North America from the Far East to pick up Canadian soldiers who had served at part of the Canadian Siberian Expeditionary Force during the Russian Revolution. In this period, Empress of Russia transported Philippine Senator Manuel L. Quezon on his return to Manila from the first Independence Mission to the US Congress in 1919.
But the B&O; encountered financial difficulties and sold the S&H; railroad subsidiary to the Southern Railway in 1896. In 1888 the B&O; built a passenger station in Woodstock, made with native limestone, noted as one of the more elaborate passenger depots in the region. Woodstock became a freight rail entrepot with outward bound shipments of grain, cattle and fruit and inward bound freight of manufactured goods, rail service that continued into the 1960s. Passenger service ended in 1948 and freight rail service began to decline in the 1950s, reflecting a nationwide shift to cars and trucks with the advent of the national highway system.
Huston started his career in Minnesota’s Boundary Waters. From 2000 to 2005, Huston worked full- time at Outward Bound, an expedition school that leads active learning trips. In the spring of 2005, Huston was the only North American selected to join a team of Norwegians restaging Roald Amundsen’s 1911 expedition to the South Pole for a History Channel and BBC documentary. The expedition team skied and dog sledded 1400 miles over 72 days on the Greenland icecap, using 1911 period clothing, equipment and food. During December 2007 and January 2008, Huston led a full-length ski expedition to the South Pole, covering 720 miles in 57 days.
The third semester at NUS Business School starts with several activities - a multi-day Orientation and a two-day team-building session at Outward Bound Singapore, as well as the NUS Orientation Graduation Dinner. In this semester students are able to select elective courses, allowing them to specialize (although both degrees given under S³ Asia MBA are General Management degrees). In addition to the core courses, students can typically choose three electives (although it is also possible to choose four electives). It is at NUS Business School that the S³ Asia MBA class mingles with the NUS MBA cohort, exchange students from foreign schools, and also the part-time MBA students.

She remained there until 21 March when she sailed to Hong Kong, calling at Pearl Harbor, Eniwetok, and Guam on her outward bound passage. She swept mines in the East Hainan Straits until 16 June when she cleared Hong Kong, returning to San Francisco, California, 14 August. Reassigned to the Atlantic Fleet, Crag sailed from San Francisco, California, 4 October 1946 and arrived at Charleston, South Carolina, 3 November for overhaul. From 9 February 1947 to 26 May she served at the U.S. Navy Mine Countermeasures Station at Panama City, Florida, and after overhaul, joined in exercises in Chesapeake Bay from 13 October to 28 November.
He searched for work at other studios, but received no offers – only two years after his arrival in Hollywood, he was unemployed in the film industry. He returned to New York, and began to re-focus on the stage. Success came quickly on Broadway for Preminger, with long-running productions, including Outward Bound with Laurette Taylor and Vincent Price, My Dear Children with John and Elaine Barrymore and Margin for Error, in which Preminger played a shiny-domed villainous Nazi. Preminger was offered a teaching position at the Yale School of Drama and began commuting twice a week to Connecticut to lecture on directing and acting.

Williams had been informed of the presence of the boat by the keeper of the Northwest Channel lighthouse who feared that she might attack his outpost. Another prize came Annie's, way on the afternoon of 20 October when she captured the British schooner Martha Jane, outward-bound from Bayport, Florida, laden with cotton. Ten days later, Annie joined the armed launch of the screw gunboat —which she was then tending—in chasing Meteor and caught that British schooner which was attempting to slip into Bayport, with an assorted cargo from Havana.
Julian Vincent "Mo" Anthoine (1 August 1939 - 12 August 1989) was a British mountaineer who climbed extensively in the Himalayas in the 1970s and 80s. Born in Kidderminster, he left King Charles I School aged sixteen to become a trainee manager in the carpet industry. It was on an Outward Bound course as part of his management training that he had his first climbing experience, and soon afterwards he left the carpet industry to take a job at the Ogwen Cottage Outdoor Pursuits Centre in Snowdonia. He travelled widely in his early 20s, hitchhiking across Europe, Asia and Australia from 1961 to 1963, paying his way by working in an asbestos mine in Australia and smuggling turquoise into Pakistan.
Neither the original play, Outward Bound, nor its 1930 film version have a war setting. There are fewer characters in the play and the earlier film, and no one is killed by a bomb, but the plot is essentially the same, as is much of the dialogue. However, because there is no bomb explosion, neither the audience nor the ship passengers are aware that the passengers are dead until well into the play, not even Henry and Ann. The play and earlier film also share a number of other differences from Between Two Worlds, one of them being that Henry and Ann are lovers and Ann cannot obtain a divorce from her husband.

She served till 1966 when she was organising the association's response to the Plowden Report. She made her film debut in 1927 in the silent film The Music Master and in 1930 joined Leslie Howard, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Beryl Mercer for Outward Bound, the film version of the stage success. The unusual story told of a group of passengers on an ocean liner who gradually realize that they are all dead and will soon face the Last Judgment. Chandler, with her blonde hair and ethereal quality, was considered to be perfectly cast, and she received critical praise for her performance. Chandler did not want to play the role for which she is probably best remembered, Mina in Dracula (1931); she wanted to play Alice in Alice in Wonderland.
RMS Tahiti on Sydney Harbour, circa 1920 Greycliffe left Circular Quay, Sydney's main ferry terminus, at 4.15pm on Thursday 3 November 1927, with 120 passengers on board, including many schoolchildren returning home. The ferry stopped at Garden Island to pick up dock workers, and then resumed its journey on a course that would have taken it just north of the lighthouse near Shark Island. Its remaining intended stops were to be Nielsen Park, Parsley Bay, Central Wharf (near The Crescent), and Watsons Bay. On roughly the same course, however, was the liner operated by the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand's outward- bound transpacific Royal Mail Ship, the 7,585-ton , three times the length of Greycliffe.
The Action of 6 November 1794 (Known in French as the Combat du 16 Brumaire an III) was a naval engagement during the French Revolutionary Wars. Two British ships of the line, HMS Alexander and HMS Canada were intercepted while returning to Britain through the Celtic Sea by a large French squadron. The French squadron had sailed from Brest in search of an inward bound British convoy in October, but instead encountered the two British ships returning from escorting an outward-bound convoy. There had been no warning of the French approach as the British force assigned to watch Brest was absent at Plymouth due to the policy of operating a distant blockade.
Walton had various occupations on leaving the Royal Navy, including British Secretary of the International Antarctic Expedition, when he kept huskies in the gardens of the Royal Geographical Society in London; mechanic for Aston Martin in the Le Mans 24-hour race, and the first instructor for the Outward Bound Mountain School in the Lake District. For six months Walton was one of the crew of a yacht which landed agents in Albania. This career ended on the discovery that details of the operation were being leaked from MI6 by the double-agent Kim Philby. He taught workshop engineering at Oundle School, at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, and at Malvern College.
The play, a comedic dissection of a family whose theatrical excesses drive their unsuspecting visitors to distraction, was a major hit from the moment of its August 6, 1925 debut. It also caused a serious and permanent rift in the friendship of Taylor and Coward. She suffered from severe alcoholism for many years, a condition which sharply limited her appearances from the late 1920s throughout her career. In 1938, she headed the cast in a revival of Outward Bound and did not appear again until her re- emergence in Williams' The Glass Menagerie in 1944; her performance received nearly unanimously rapturous reviews and won her the New York Drama Critics Award for Best Actress of the season.

Asheville was formerly home to one of the few Sudbury schools in the Southeast, Katuah Sudbury School. Based at Narragansett Bay, this group prepared for assignment to "distant seas" and was formed around , , , and . Four patrol plane squadrons and three destroyer squadrons—the last including Upshur—rounded out the Support Force. Over the ensuing months, Upshur operated alternately out of Naval Station Argentia, Newfoundland; Newport, Rhode Island; Philadelphia; Narragansett Bay; Boston; and Reykjavík, Iceland, after its occupation by the United States that summer. On 11 September, the destroyer departed Argentia, bound for a rendezvous with an outward-bound convoy headed for the British Isles. Five days later, a convoy of 50 merchantmen of British and Allied nationalities—classified as HX 150 —put to sea from Halifax, Nova Scotia, escorted locally by Canadian units.
Mandby then turned Bordelais and engaged the larger of the brigs at a range of ten yards. The other two French vessels held off when they realized could fire her carronades on both broadsides. After about 30 minutes the larger brig struck Robert Barrie, First Lieutenant of Bordelais, took possession of the brig, which turned out to be the 18-gun gun brig Curieuse. Curieuse was pierced for 20 guns and carried eighteen long 9-pounders. She had a crew of 168 men under the command of Captain G. Radelet. Victor "Hughes", governor of Cayenne, had dispatched the three vessels some 28 days earlier to intercept the outward-bound West Indies merchant fleet.
The Wangs were prominent supporters of the Drug Enforcement Administration Foundation and helped bring the DEA Museum to the California Science Center in Los Angeles to educate the public on illegal drugs and trafficking. A 'circular' arrives at the Goodies' office from the Loch Jaw school, advertising for school children to take part in a "Way Outward Bound" adventure course. The Goodies are interested -- especially in the bounty fees being offered for any children who are brought to the school -- but the Goodies are unable to get any children to go with them. The Goodies decide to go themselves, so that they can still receive the bounty money. They dress as children -- with Graeme dressed as a schoolgirl (complete with twin plaits), Bill dressed in shorts and cap as a small schoolboy, and Tim dressed the same in black and white uniform, complete with a teddy bear.
Casco Bay High School is a public high school in Portland, Maine, United States. Casco Bay High School describes itself as an Expeditionary Learning educational experience, which the school describes as being based on the Outward Bound learning system. Since the 2005–06 school year, the school has shared a facility with Portland Arts and Technology High School on Allen Avenue, in the city's North Deering neighborhood. Casco Bay is one of three public high schools within Portland Public Schools, the other two being Portland High School and Deering High School. Opening in 2005, Casco Bay High made Portland the first city in the United States to offer Expeditionary Learning from kindergarten to 12th grade.
She twice more patrolled the area between Brest and Ushant, near Belle Isle, before the end of July 1917. Vedette remained in port the first few days of August 1917, and she suffered slight damage on the morning of 3 August 1917 when Christabel - while shifting moorings — raked her stern, carrying away the flagstaff and damaging the after rail. Nevertheless, Vedette stood out to sea at 1700 that afternoon in the screen of an outward-bound convoy of 10 merchant ships which were also protected by Harvard, three French patrol vessels, and two British ships. Vedette left that convoy at 0050 on 4 August 1917 and patrolled the vicinity until 0650, when she picked up a Brest-bound convoy of 19 merchantmen escorted by three patrol boats.
A slipway for the lifeboat was built at a cost of £300 in 1903 to enable the lifeboat to be launched into the river. The station closed in 1931, but was reopened in 1963 at the Outward Bound Sea School as an inshore station supplied with a D-class lifeboat, which in 1974 was replaced by an lifeboat. A new boathouse was built in 1991 to house the Atlantic 21 and its launching tractor, a shop and crew facilities, and in 1995 an upper floor was built to provide a crew room, galley and store. Since 1998 the station has operated an inshore lifeboat, RNLB Sandwell Lifeline (B-758), launched by tractor, and making an average of 25 emergency launches a year.

On Earth Day 2012 he established the International Institute for Sustainability in Emergency Services (iiSES), which developed from the Green EMS Initiative, a multinational non-governmental organization dedicated to improving sustainability in EMS operations and workforce. He has field tested and published recommendations regarding use of hybrid vehicles in wilderness EMS response, which has been cited as the "future for a greener EMS". (login required) He serves as the medical director of Landmark Learning, an outdoor education and wilderness EMS school in Cullowhee, North Carolina, as well as medical advisor for both North Carolina Outward Bound School and REI. In 2013 he founded the Appalachian Mountain Rescue Team, the first fully credentialed Mountain Rescue Association team in the American southeast, and currently serves as that team's Chief.

Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Helen Chandler in Outward Bound (1930) Born in Charleston, South Carolina,A 1935 Associated Press story about Chandler's wedding to Bramwell Fletcher says Chandler "was born here ...", apparently referring to the story's New York dateline. Chandler began her acting career in New York City at the age of eight and was on Broadway two years later in 1917. Her early performances include Arthur Hopkins' 1920 production of Richard III, which starred John Barrymore, Macbeth in 1921 with Lionel Barrymore; Hedvig in Henrik Ibsen's The Wild Duck in 1925 and Ophelia in the 1925 modern dress version of Hamlet starring Basil Sydney. By the time of her first film she had been in over twenty Broadway productions.
On leaving Eton, Johnson went on a gap year to Australia, where he taught English and Latin at Timbertop, an Outward Bound-inspired campus of Geelong Grammar, an elite independent boarding school. Johnson read Classics at Balliol College, Oxford. Johnson won a scholarship to read Literae Humaniores at Balliol College, Oxford, a four-year course in the study of the Classics, ancient literature and classical philosophy. Matriculating at the university in late 1983, he was one of a generation of Oxford undergraduates who were later to dominate British politics and media in the second decade of the 21st century; among them David Cameron, William Hague, Michael Gove, Jeremy Hunt and Nick Boles all went on to become senior Conservative Party politicians.
Early in 1810 he transported a battalion of the 60th Regiment from England to Barbados; and during the siege of Guadeloupe, he commanded a squadron stationed to intercept enemy vessels. He returned to England with the French Captain-General Jean Augustin Ernouf and his suite on board, surviving a hurricane which sank two transports full of prisoners. He then proceeded to the coast of Norway, where he saved the sloop from an attack from eight Danish brigs. Until 1812 Schomberg was chiefly employed in command of a light squadron in the Baltic. He once escorted an outward-bound West India convoy as far as Madeira; and in December 1810 narrowly escaped disaster being in company with , shortly before she was wrecked.
He was also chairman of the Wentworth Boy Scouts' Association from 1953 to 1973 and a founder of the Australian Outward Bound Memorial Foundation. A lifelong sportsman, he had done well at rowing at school and university and was a long-standing member of the Royal Sydney Golf Club, the Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club and the Kosciusko Alpine Club; he and his wife swam every morning into their eighties. Mant was a delegate to Commonwealth law conferences in London in 1955 and Ottawa in 1960, and was a founder of the Australian branch of the Commercial Law Association in 1965. He retired in 1984 after sixty years of legal practice, having been appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1978.
Comet and spacecraft would be at the distance of Jupiter's orbit, and 850 days before closest approach to the Sun, or perihelion. CRAF would fire its penetrator/lander at the comet in August 2001, then would continue to fly beside Kopff. The spacecraft would take data for a total of two and two- thirds years, until about 109 days after they pass closest to the Sun and are outward bound again. It was to be the first time a spacecraft would have flown in formation with a comet, though a U.S. spacecraft, International Cometary Explorer (ICE), flew by Comet Giacobini-Zinner in 1985, spacecraft from several countries encountered Comet Halley in 1986, and the Giotto spacecraft flew past Comet Grigg-Skjellerup in 1992.
Ordered to fuel, outward-bound for the Far East, U-1062 prepared to rendezvous with her smaller sister boat in the South Atlantic narrows - directly in the path of the Tripoli escort group. Passing to the westward of the Cape Verdes, TG 47.7 made rendezvous with s escort group to conduct a joint hunter-killer operation against the two enemy boats. Round-the-clock searches by radar-equipped Avengers continued until 40 minutes after sunset on 28 September, when an Avenger piloted by Lieutenant William R. Gillespie reported a definite contact with the surfaced U-219 only 11 miles from the enemy's estimated track. Gillespie went in to conduct a low-level rocket attack, but was shot down by heavy flak.
In September 1940 Sabre was detailed to meet the first slow Atlantic convoy, as it approached the United Kingdom from Canada. A Finnish merchant ship, Elle, 3,868 tons was torpedoed at 04:25am on 28 August and Sabre joined the hunt for the German U-boat without success. Then two days later, during the evening of 30 August off Malin Head Sabre helped rescue the survivors of a torpedoed Dutch ship, the 15,434 ton Holland America line, .Gourock Times 6 Sep 1940 She was in an outward bound convoy OB 205 for Canada, carrying 879 passengers and 273 crew members. This included 320 children with their escorts under the Children's Overseas Reception Board scheme some as young as five, together with 286 other passengers.
A Franco-Ontarian from Smooth Rock Falls in the Northeastern part of the province, Paul Landry spent his boyhood summers canoeing the area's rivers and his winters snowshoeing and cross- country skiing. He received a diploma in Power Engineering from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and studied social sciences at the University of Western Ontario. Between the age of 20 and 22, Landry traveled and worked throughout Europe and the Middle East then functioned for a number of years as a Program Director for Canadian Outward Bound community projects during which time he co-authored their publications: Basic River Canoeing and the Wilderness Canoeing Handbook. He also was the editor of On Thin Ice, A Woman's Journey to the North Pole.
The first Songs of Hope project took place in 1991, and was the idea of Jeanne Junge, a performing arts educator, and Tom Surprenant, a staff member at Dartmouth College Outward Bound School, both residents of Saint Paul, Minnesota. They began designing a program for young people focused on travel, cultural experiences, music, and experiential education, which became the Songs of Hope project. Their idea was to bring delegations of one boy and girl aged 10–13 from different countries to perform an international concert for local audiences. With help from Saint Paul Mayor James Scheibel, they asked friends and community leaders, including Dick Cohen and Mark Dayton, to join their first board of advisors or to make donations, and then asked community philanthropists to provide funding.
Back at sea with a convoy outward bound from Gibraltar soon thereafter, Venetia's next encounter with the enemy came within a week of her brush with UB-52. Just before nightfall on 17 May, the armed yacht was steaming on an irregular zig-zag pattern when the British steamship SS Sculptor took a torpedo from UB-39. Venetia, two and one-half to three points abaft the beam of the stricken merchantman and away, simultaneously sounded general quarters and rang down emergency full speed ahead. As the yacht passed astern of Sculptor, Porterfield assumed that, after making her attack, the submarine had turned aft on the starboard side of the convoy. Venetia consequently dropped 300-pound depth charges set at depth, between 1901 and 1902.

To do this, Andy sets up a slackline in the parking lot and makes the employees walk across it, humiliating Nellie as she insists on walking in her heels and fails to keep her balance. After Clark proves that he is talented at balancing, Dwight attempts to one-up him, but ends up failing repeatedly and hurting himself.
In June 1917 Manchester Port (1904) beat off a submarine attack with gunfire near Cape Wrath. Manchester Commerce (1899), outward-bound for Quebec City was sunk off northwest Ireland on 26 October 1914, with the loss of 14 crew, becoming the first merchant ship to be sunk by a mine. On 4 June 1917 the second Manchester Trader, en route from Souda Bay in Crete to Algiers, was engaged in a running battle with U-boat U 65 before she was captured and sunk near Pantellaria island, with the loss of one crewmember. The master, Captain F. D. Struss, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, and went on to complete 40 years service with the line after surviving another sinking in the Second World War.
Late in the 1940s he converted to Islam, changing his name to Harneefan Majeed; he continued to use Charles Greenlee for professional purposes, though he is sometimes credited with his Muslim last name. After spending some time on the hard bop scene in the early 1950s, with Gene Ammons among others, Greenlee essentially quit music from 1951 to 1957. He returned to play with Yusef Lateef (1957) and Maynard Ferguson (1959). The Mountain Institute was founded in 1972 as the Woodlands & Whitewater Institute in Cherry Grove, West Virginia by Daniel C. Taylor and King Seegar. The organization's goal was to facilitate children sharing activities with their parents, experiencing adventure together, and developing relationships that would support and guide them through adolescence. Woodlands was designed as a "family equivalent to Outward Bound and National Outdoor Leadership School" with courses that brought together fathers and sons and fathers and daughters for rock climbing, caving, backpacking, fly fishing, photography, falconry, and survival skills. These outings were based out of the Spruce Knob Mountain Center, a 400-acre tract of land abutting the Monongahela National Forest on the west side of Spruce Mountain in West Virginia.

At Camp Quest UK children are also encourage to use scientific method and reasoning to problem solve, and activities can also involve investigating evolution, astronomy and paleontology. In recent years there are two camps running at different times and locations divided by the age of participants, junior camp for children aged 7-11, and senior camp for ages 11-17. A central theme is chosen for each year, past themes have included: Evolution (2009), The Mind (2010), What is Science (2011), Humanity and Language (2012), The Future (2013), Worlds within our World (2014), Artificial Intelligence (2015), Space (2017), Thought (2018) and Sustainable Futures (2019). In addition to reasoning and science based activities Camp Quest UK also hosts traditional camping and Outward Bound style activities such as campfires, learning to canoe, swimming, trekking and cooking.
School children in Hong Kong are known to be sufferers from pressure arising partly from their studies and examinations, and partly from the temptation of substance abuse. Consequently, in 1998, the organisation started a project, in collaboration with Kely Support Group and the Outward Bound Hong Kong, known as the SKO Project, to train senior students from secondary schools to be aware of suicide risks in their peers and in the community at large, the skills needed to recognise the danger signs and how to respond to them, as well as life coping skills. This project was revamped and renamed the Youth Suicide Prevention Project (YSPP). The project is now further tailored to operate in Chinese and runs twice annually, each time admitting 40 students from secondary schools.

He was not interested in jumping on the folk rock (or, as he once joked, "folk rot"Tom Paxton, "Folk Rot", Sing Out! She then entered the Bremerton Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington to undergo a FRAM I upgrade, a modernization program under which Eversole and forty-three other Gearing-class ships received updated radars, sonars and electronic suites and the ASROC and DASH anti-submarine weapons systems. Eversole emerged from the shipyard in February 1963 to be homeported at the Long Beach Naval Station in Long Beach, California. During her periods of training and preparation for deployment on the west coast, Eversole often visited ports of the Pacific Northwest, and on occasion voyaged to the Hawaiian Islands.
After the war, he became a proprietor of John Fairfax and Sons, a director of the publicly-listed John Fairfax Holdings Limited, and served as a director of both the AMP Society and the Bank of New South Wales. Ruins of the fortress of San Jeronimo, Portobelo Prior to 1739, trade between mainland Spain and its colonies was conducted only through specific ports; twice a year, outward bound ships assembled in Cadiz and the Flota escorted to Portobelo or Veracruz. One way to impact Spanish trade was by attacking or blockading these ports but as many ships carried cargoes financed by foreign merchants, the strategy also risked damaging British and neutral interests. During the 1727 to 1729 Anglo-Spanish War, the British attempted to take Portobelo but retreated after heavy losses from disease. On 22 November 1739, Vernon attacked the port with six ships of the line; it fell within twenty-four hours and the British occupied the town for three weeks before withdrawing, having first destroyed its fortifications, port and warehouses.

In post-World War I England, with its reflective, pacifist mood--many hundreds of thousands of families were still mourning the loss of loved ones, and the nation collectively mourned the decimation of a generation of students, artists, writers, and musicians--the play struck a responsive chord and was an immediate success. Outward Bound was moved to a large theatre in London and became the biggest hit of the 1923 season. The play came to Broadway in 1924, where it was a similarly huge success in a production starring Alfred Lunt, Leslie Howard, Margalo Gillmore, Beryl Mercer, and Dudley Digges (as the Examiner).
Dami is the daughter of publisher Piero Dami (who founded Dami Editore in 1972). At the age of thirteen she started out in the publishing world as a proofreader for the family business and at nineteen she wrote her first short stories. As an adventure lover, she got her aircraft pilot and parachutist licenses aged 20, and at 23 she traveled around the world on her own and completed a famous survival course at the Outward Bound School in Maine, in the United States. Some of Dami's other adventures include taking part in a rally in the Sahara desert and crossing Africa from north to south in an off- road vehicle; she raced the 100-km Sahara ultramarathon and ran three New York marathons (in 2002, 2003, and 2017).
Kielsmeier spent time as a youth worker in Harlem, and then as a U.S. Army Infantry platoon leader and community relations officer in Korea during the 1960s. In Korea, he developed a program placing GIs as tutors in schools. A former middle and high school teacher and Outward Bound instructor, Kielsmeier founded the National Youth Leadership Council in 1983, initially based at the University of Minnesota. Kielsmeier has also been engaged in the design and implementation of comprehensive state and federal youth service and service-learning models. He has advised three Minnesota governors, helped U.S. Senators Dave Durenberger and Paul Wellstone write the 1990 and 1993 National and Community Service Act, advised the Clinton and Obama Administrations’ transition teams, and testified before the Minnesota House and Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives.
The public was shocked to hear of the sinking of the ship SS Rowan taking them on to their next venue, Dublin. Of the 120 onboard, 36 people died, including nine players, when in dense fog late at night off Corsewall Point, Wigtownshire, the Rowan was struck by the American freighter West Camak and then cut in two by the Clan Malcolm, outward-bound from Glasgow for South Africa, which had come to the rescue at full speed. The survivors came back to Glasgow, where theatres staged Relief Fund concerts in aid of the surviving members and to help replace their musical instruments, all of which had been lost. On 17 October, 1921, the orchestra opened at La Scala Theatre, Dublin for the delayed two- week engagement, before going on to play venues in Derry and Belfast.

The Cape of Good Hope was first settled by Europeans in 1652, under the auspices of the Dutch East India Company (also known by its Dutch initials VOC), which established a victualling station there that year to give its outward-bound fleets fresh provisions and a harbour for refuge during the long sea journey from Europe to Asia. Within a few decades, the Cape had become home to a large population of former Company employees who remained there after completing their contracts. This came about because the VOC released some employees from their contracts to save on their wages, instead offering them grants of farmland in exchange for their commitment that they would stay on the African continent for at least 20 years, and would cultivate grain on their land for the Company warehouses.

Miners Alley Playhouse in downtown Golden, is an award-winning live theater which has performed there since 2001. The 150-year-old Buffalo Rose Bar and Grill is the longest surviving Colorado gold rush-era business and remains a popular music venue for touring rock and blues bands. Golden has several annual events, including E-Days of the Colorado School of Mines in April (since 1927), the Golden Music Festival at Clear Creek History Park, Independence Day fireworks shows sponsored the Golden Lions Club (since 1972), the largest event of the year is Buffalo Bill Days in late July (since 1946); the Golden Fine Arts Festival in August (since 1990), and Olde Golden Christmas (since 1972) in November to December. The American Mountaineering Center is home to the American Alpine Club, The Colorado Mountain Club, and Outward Bound.
Soon after the renewal of hostilities in May 1803, Hotham obtained command of the 40-gun frigate Imperieuse, and in the same year he recaptured a South Sea whaler, homeward bound in the Channel. He was appointed to the frigate in April 1804, conveying Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex from Lisbon to Portsmouth in August. In September he escorted an outward bound East India fleet, before proceeding to Halifax. On 1 December 1803 Imperieuse recaptured the ship Britannia, and on 4 November 1805 he assisted at the capture of four French ships by Sir Richard Strachan in the Battle of Cape Ortegal. In March 1806 Hotham took command of the 74-gun , in the squadron of Rear-Admiral Robert Stopford. On 23 February 1809 Stopford's squadron fought three French frigates in the Battle of Les Sables-d'Olonne.
The company was founded in Grand Junction, Colorado by local resident Tom Boyce and two University of California, Santa Cruz students, David Huntley and Eric Reynolds, who shared the common goal of making their own mountaineering equipment. Two years prior to the founding of Marmot, Boyce secured an order for the climbing apparel used in the film The Eiger Sanction starring Clint Eastwood, and Huntley made the original prototype gear that Boyce was using on the Wolper Productions/ National Geographic documentary Journey to the Outer Limits, about the Colorado Outward Bound School. It was during this documentary production that cameraman Mike Hoover, who later worked on Eiger Sanction, saw the equipment that Boyce was using during the portion filmed in Peru. Just prior to Christmas 1973, Mike Hoover called Boyce and placed the order that led to the formation of the company in Grand Junction.

As a result, campers and backpackers have developed a significant body of techniques and specialized equipment for preparing food in outdoors environments. Such techniques have traditionally been associated with nomadic cultures such as the Berbers of North Africa, the Arab Beduins, the Plains Indians and pioneers of North America, and have been carried down to and refined in modern times for use during recreational outdoors pursuits. Currently, much of the work of maintaining and developing outdoor cooking traditions in Westernized countries is done by the Scouting movement and by wilderness educators such as the National Outdoor Leadership School and Outward Bound, as well as by writers and cooks closely associated with the outdoors community.

He commanded the third-rate HMS Monck in the fleet under Sir George Rooke, which while in charge of the Smyrna convoy, was scattered by the French at the Battle of Lagos off Cape St. Vincent in June 1693. Fairborne was given command of the first-rate HMS Victory in 1695 and then transferred to the command of the third-rate HMS Defiance in February 1696 with orders to protect the outward-bound trade in the Downs. He returned to HMS Victory in March 1697 and then transferred to the first-rate HMS London in June 1697 and to the second-rate HMS Albemarle in Autumn 1697. In Alfred Wainwright's 1955 drawing the trench looks much cleaner and fresher than it is today The view from the summit is restricted both by the higher ridge to the west, and by intervening land to the east which conceals most of Ullswater. There are distant glimpses of Catstye Cam and Helvellyn, a closer view of Great Dodd and Stybarrow Dodd across Deepdale, and even a glimpse of Scafell Pike through the gap between Green Side and Stybarrow Dodd. A much better viewpoint for Ullswater and the east is found at Birkett Fell, where there is a cairn built from stones carried up from the shores of Ullswater by members of the Outward Bound School in Watermillock. The cairn carries a stone plaque with the name of the fell, which was named in honour of Lord Birkett of Ulverston and in recognition of the part played by him in preventing Ullswater from being made into a reservoir.
Educated at University College School in Hampstead, Bonington joined the Royal Fusiliers before attending Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and on graduation was commissioned in the Royal Tank Regiment in 1956. After serving three years in North Germany, he spent two years at the Army Outward Bound School as a mountaineering instructor. Bonington was part of the party that made the first British ascent of the South West Pillar (aka Bonatti Pillar) of the Aiguille du Dru in 1958, and the first ascent of the Central Pillar of Freney on the south side of Mont Blanc in 1961 with Don Whillans, Ian Clough and Jan Dlugosz (Poland). In 1960 he was part of the successful joint British-Indian-Nepalese forces expedition to Annapurna II. On leaving the British Army in 1961, he joined Van den Berghs, a division of Unilever, but he left after nine months, and became a professional mountaineer and explorer.

The winter 1904 season arrived early, with the ice boat already in service by early January. On 8 January, during a snowstorm, Ice Boat No. 3, with the assistance of the tug Sommers N. Smith, refloated the Norwegian steamship Kate, which had gone ashore in Delaware Bay while outward bound from Philadelphia to Puerto Rico; Kate was towed the same day to Wilmington, Delaware, for repairs. On 10 February, Ice Boat No. 3 was sent to the assistance of several tugs attempting to refloat the British steamer Craigneuk, which had grounded near Reedy Island on her way from Leith to Philadelphia. Some time after the end of the 1904 winter season, the City Ice Boat Department requested permission from the city council to prepare plans for a $110,000 rebuild of Ice Boat No. 3 as "her boilers and hull were worn out" and she could not be expected to continue in service beyond the next winter.

The LTWA has provided informal courses as part of volunteer biomonitoring activities for individuals and groups from many organizations including Franklin High School, Macon Middle School, Upward Bound, Outward Bound, NCCAT, The Mountain Retreat Center, SAFC, interns at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, and many others. It played a major role in creating a Biomonitoring Curriculum for Macon County schools in partnership with Coweeta Hydrologic Lab and has worked with the Tennessee Valley Authority's "Kids in the Creek" program. It has also published several guides and publications about the watershed, including A Field Guide to the Fishes of the Upper Little Tennessee Watershed, a 71-page illustrated booklet about 68 species of fish in the watershed, Sediment in our Watershed, a 4-page brochure funded by the Little Tennessee Nonpoint Source with information about the problems of sediment, and The State of the Streams in the Upper Little Tennessee Watershed: A Report on Water Quality and Habitat Trends, 1990-2002 , which uses data from the biomonitoring program to illustrate the overall health of the watershed.
The National Youth Council (NYC) was established on 1 November 1989 to be the central body responsible for the planning, coordination and management of youth affairs, based on the recommendations of the Advisory Council on Youth (Feb 1988 - Feb 1989) chaired by Lee Hsien Loong and approved by then First Deputy Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. It was expanded from the National Youth Coordinating Committee that was a non- executive body with no policy making powers, and would be placed under People's Association (PA). On 1 January 2015, NYC was taken out of PA and restructured as an Autonomous Agency under the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) with the addition of two operational divisions - Outward Bound Singapore, which conducts national-level outdoor adventure-based education and leadership programmes, and the Youth Corps Singapore which runs youth volunteering and service leaders programmes.
