She was one of numerous top-class winners sired by Northern Dancer the Canadian-bred winner of the 1964 Kentucky Derby. Northern Trick was half- sister to On The Sly, winner of 14 races including the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Through her dam Trick Chick, Northern Trick was a granddaughter of the notable broodmare Fast Line.

President Mallard Fillmore's bribing of Alley-Kat-Abra was revealed and he resigned in shame. Vice President Beneduck Arnold took over and promptly created the Collar I.D. Initiative, (a parody of the Superhuman Registration Act storyline of Marvel Comics' Civil War crossover event), which required that all superheroes reveal their secret identities to the government and wear identity collars. The government immediately stopped funding the Zoo Crew, and they were forced to leave their headquarters and all of the equipment that came with it. The Zoo Crew officially resisted the Collar I.D. Initiative and refused to sign up, but fought crime on the sly.

The first occurred on February 17, 1988, when CBS Television broadcast the "Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College: 20th Anniversary" special. This hour long program was hosted by Dick Van Dyke and it featured a cadre of clown alumni, performing their favorite routines, as well as Mr. Van Dyke, in character as the school custodian "Burford," who was trying to pick up some of the "course material" on the sly. The second was on August 4, 1992, when Ringling created "Smiles Across America," an event done locally in cities and towns across the country to raise awareness of various issues and to help make people happier.

In 1960 and 1961, the film Black Gravel (Schwarzer Kies) directed by Helmut Käutner, was shot in Lautzenhausen. The film tells the story of a man named Robert Neidhardt (Helmut Wildt), a gravel dealer in the fictitious village of "Sohnen", who, on the sly, sells gravel to smaller companies which was meant for building the runway at the nearby air base. He must flee when the police find out about his unlawful deals, and this leads to great misfortune for himself as well as others. The use of the German word schwarz ("black") in the title does not refer to the gravel's colour, but rather imparts the meaning of illegality, as in "black market".

Realizing the team is nearly hopeless, he recruits a couple of unlikely prospects: sharp-tongued Amanda Whurlitzer, a skilled pitcher (trained by Buttermaker when she was younger) who is the 11-year-old daughter of one of Buttermaker's ex-girlfriends. At first, she tries to convince Buttermaker that she has given up baseball, but then she reveals that she had been practicing "on the sly". Before agreeing to join the team, Amanda makes a number of outlandish demands (such as imported jeans, modeling school, ballet lessons, etc.) as conditions for joining.

The assailant, Dean Shipley, demanded to see his former football coach, Tom Croydon, who entered the bar without a bullet-proof vest and was shot non-fatally after Dean was spooked by a noise from outside. After getting drunk in an effort to cope with the trauma of being held hostage and seeing her best friend shot, Riley shared a kiss with Adam, and the pair ultimately began a short-lived sexual relationship. Midway through the fourth season, Riley's temper found her in hot water when she summarily dismissed a barman who was suspected of dealing alcohol to minors on the sly. Her assumption of his guilt, and her unwillingness to let the man state his case leads to her entire staff going on strike.

Chioggia lagoon, bridge over Canal Vena Le baruffe chiozzotte (Brawling in Chioggia) is a play by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni, first performed at the Teatro San Luca in Venice in January 1762. It deals with the comic struggles between two groups of fishermen in the lagoon-mouth village of Chioggia brought on by the love affairs of the younger generation. Written in a dialect even more exotic than Venetian, the comedy is intensified by the presence of a hapless young Venetian official, who is helpless to enforce order on the sly inhabitants he is supposed to keep under control. In modern times, the play was revived at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano in 1962, in a production by Giorgio Strehler emphasizing the humanity and realism of Goldoni's script over the conventionally farcical elements.

Others against the MPPC included Harry E. Aitken (Majestic Films), William Fox (founder of the Fox Film Corporation), and Adolph Zukor (Famous Players Film Company, a precursor to Paramount). The flexible, stealthy and adventurous independents avoided coercive MPPC restrictions (the requirement to use only Trust film stock and projectors, for example) by using unlicensed equipment, obtaining their own film materials, and making movies on the sly. At one time, a computer matched Archie and Midge, to Moose's fury, but Archie and Midge both stated that they weren't interested in each other, except as friends, which allowed Moose to cool off. At one point, Archie outright asks permission to date Midge, and Moose declined the request, but it showed, that at least Archie has the courtesy to ask him, whereas Reggie will stoop to dating her on the sly-which often results in Moose pounding up Reggie-as a running gag. Archie was once able to use Moose's devotion and genuine concern for Midge to help him defeat a gang of robbers who were stealing office electronics from the school.

Thrown into the equation are Tom Widdicomb, a housekeeper at the Forbes Hospital, who keeps his dead mother in a Freezer at home and 'helps' breast cancer patients escape life since that is what his mother died of, and Sushita Industries, the Japanese financial backers of Forbes. While Sushita launches an effort to 'invite' Sean to Tokyo to determine whether he is a potential threat to their investment by using Tanaka Yamaguchi, Tom is certain that Janet is there at Forbes to spy on him as she suspects his hand in the death of the breast cancer patients and should therefore be silenced as the previous nurse was, for interfering in his affairs. Dr. Mason meanwhile learns of Sean's past as an entrepreneur and successful seller of a biotechnology firm and sets Sterling, a 'consultant' (in reality, an industrial espionage expert), on Sean's tail. Driven by his own idealism, Sean decides to look into the 100% remission of medulloblastoma on the sly (with help from Janet in procuring the medicine samples and patients charts).

Sniper Lee Ho-yeung (Michael Tse) left the Special Duties Unit as he failed in an operation, and since then he has gradually developed personal enmity towards his co-worker and good friend Ko Chun Kin (Eddie Cheung). Ho- yeung becomes a yacht merchant and then becomes a president of a Firearms Association, colluding with organised crime syndicates on the sly. Taking advantage of the trust laid upon him by a detective of the Organised Crime and Triad Bureau, Sheung-koon Ming-chu (Kate Tsui), he has quite a grasp on police operations that raid on the crime syndicates. On top of that, with his girlfriend Lai Chan (Eliza Sam) being a member of the Special Duties Unit, Ho- yeung gains first-move advantage in all respects. On the flip side, Chun-kin has been kept in the dark for the whole time, until he finds there is something suspicious regarding the criminal’s modus operandi in several murder cases. Later on, owing to a money laundering case, Ho-yeung deliberately approaches Chun-kin’s good friend, Wong Yeuk-ling (Kathy Chow), who learns that Chun-kin was the sniper who shot her in the head many years ago.
