"It would have been better to have found [the Pan-STARRS] observations automatically earlier," he said, but was happy that independent observatories discovered it and determined it wouldn't be a threat before it flew by.

The presence of radiant stars and galaxies can often make it difficult for these observatories to pick out small planets and other dim celestial objects, but ultra-black shades could help block out the glare.

Scientists have never directly witnessed supermassive black hole mergers, but McNamara and his colleagues plan to change that in the coming decades with two next-generation space observatories, according to an ESA release published on Thursday.
The two projects started up a few miles apart in Pasadena — at the Carnegie Observatories and at the California Institute of Technology, partners with the University of California — with very different ideas on how to proceed.
Using observations from several observatories, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the Very Large Telescope in Chile, the authors discovered that violent interactions between these two bodies are the real cause of its radiant bursts of light.
The dry air and sparse settlement are a major draw for astronomical observatories—the European Southern Observatory, the Carnegie Institution for Science, and the Llano de Chajnantor Observatory all operate multiple telescope sites on the region's mountaintops.
These latest waves, detailed in a new paper that will be published in the journal Physical Review Letters, traveled from a merger nearly 20163 billion light-years away before reaching LIGO's wave-detecting observatories on January 4th.
To date, the observatories under the watch of the Planetary Defense Coordination Office have catalogued over 17,000 asteroids, nearly 8,000 of which are above 100-meters in diameter—the type of asteroids that could destroy entire continents.
Fortunately, one of the observatories involved in the Moon Impact Detection and Analysis System (MIDAS) observed the impact flash, according to a Twitter posting by Jose Maria Madiedo, an astronomer at the University of Huelva in Spain.

Today, NASA is shutting down one of its long-lasting space observatories, a telescope that's been wandering through space for nearly two decades, snapping images of some of the coldest and most ancient objects in the Universe.
The telescope's opponents, a coalition of native Hawaiians and environmentalists, say that the proliferation of observatories on Mauna Kea has despoiled a sacred mountain and interfered with native Hawaiian cultural practices that are protected by state law.

Starting two seconds later, observatories across earth and in space detected a burst of light in the form of gamma rays from the same part of the southern sky, which analysis showed was likely from the same source.
So, when two of these objects collide, you can imagine that something phenomenal happens, and indeed scientists have measured the result several times using the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatories, or LIGO, as well as the Virgo detector.
This resulted in a pair of several-kilometer-long, L-shaped experiments called the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatories in Louisiana and Washington State, that cost the United States' National Science Foundation several hundreds of millions of dollars.
Two seconds later, observatories on earth and in space detected a burst of light in the form of gamma rays from the same path of the southern sky, which analysis showed likely to be from the same source.
The top of this dormant volcano is the site of one of the most important observatories and testing sites to the world's astronomers — making it a guaranteed success for anyone just trying to get in some good stargazing.

NASA refers to the livestream as a "Megastream," and will likely call on other views from its space-based solar observatories as well as Earth-bound telescopes to round out its complete, multi-platform coverage of the event.
In the aforementioned podcast, Irwin said that he'd been looking for a project to occupy some undergraduate students and decided to task them with analyzing archived x-ray data collected by the Chandra and XMM-Newton space observatories.

A 4-1 ruling released Tuesday backed a decision by Hawaii's department of land and natural resources (DLNR) to grant a construction permit for the $1.4 billion project, which will be one of the largest and most sophisticated observatories on Earth once it is completed.

LIGO — a network of observatories designed to detect ripples in the fabric of space and time created by extreme collisions between black holes and neutron stars — has just begun its next observing campaign after a series of upgrades that increased its sensitivity by 40%.
First predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity in 1916, gravitational waves were not confirmed until last February, when physicists at LIGO's twin Hanford and Livingston observatories announced they'd heard a chirp from a pair of black holes colliding 103 billion light years away.
The Science papers argue this likely was not a coincidence: Fermi and the other observatories picked up the same blast of cosmic rays that propelled the neutrino to the IceCube observatory and they traced it to a single blazar 4 billion light-years away.
The team's conclusion is based on multiwavelength observations from two space telescopes, NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton, as well as two ground radio observatories, the Murchison Widefield Array in Australia and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope in India.
Observatories have only just gathered enough evidence to conclude the object likely has interstellar origins, and watching it has been (and will continue to be) difficult, since at present, it's relatively close to the Sun in the sky from our viewing angle on Earth.
What's next: The EHT is now working on adding 2 more telescopes to its collaboration of radio observatories by next year, and the scientists behind the project plan to find a way to image Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the center of our galaxy.
Dmitriy Dey, who first spotted them in 22016 on Google Earth — he was looking for ancient pyramids at the time — thinks they may have been built as "horizontal observatories to track the movements of the rising sun," according to a New York Times interview in October.
One by one, the observatories sounded the alarm in the past few years—from the peak of Mauna Loa in Hawaii, and the top of the Greenland ice sheet—as the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere crept above 24 parts per million (ppm).
As Fox and his colleagues argue, to produce these trajectories using the Standard Model would require neutrino fluxes, or the number of neutrinos hitting a certain area in a certain amount of time, "well in excess" of those that have been cataloged by various cosmic ray observatories.
The waves, caused by the collision of two neutron stars some 130 million years ago, were first detected in August in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatories, known as LIGO, in Washington state and Louisiana as well as at a third detector, named Virgo in Italy.
After they detected 305 potential intermediate-mass black holes residing in galactic cores, they searched data from the  Chandra ,  XMM-Newton  and  Swift orbital X-ray  observatories for X-rays that would serve as strong evidence that these candidates were, in fact, intermediate-mass black holes.
It's a processed version of a series of images collected by NASA's STEREO spacecraft, a pair of space-based observatories that have had their eyes on the Sun since 2006, watching as solar flares and coronal mass ejections evolve on its surface before blasting off into space.
To improve the current map, Skowron said observations made from the Northern Hemisphere would add further clarity, along with the use of observatories capable of peering through to the other side of the galactic core and at super-dusty regions very close to the galactic plane.
But since the observatories began their most recent observing run in April, researchers have picked up three other signals that likely come from neutron stars: two possible collisions between pairs of neutron stars, and a signal that looks like a black hole eating a neutron star.
These air samples—collected at observatories in Hawaii, Alaska, American Samoa, and Antarctica, and from tall towers, small aircraft, and volunteers on every continent—have been coming to Boulder for more than four decades, as part of one of the world's longest-running greenhouse gas monitoring programs.

In contrast to the real, photographic beauty of the universe, captured by sophisticated observatories like the Hubble Space Telescope, the work of space artists bridges the gap between what is empirically known about the cosmos, and what can be realistically imaged from our perspective on our planet.
According to a preliminary report released last month by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the satellite clusters will interfere with the ability of telescopes to peer deep into space, and will limit the amount of observable hours, as well as the quality of images taken, by observatories.

When a gravitational wave passes through Earth, it stretches and shrinks the arms of the observatories by just a fraction of a proton, but because of the extreme sensitivity of LIGO's instruments, even that small movement is enough for scientists to know that a gravitational wave was there.

On Monday, the full context of this discovery was announced by representatives of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), its Italian counterpart Virgo, and 70 other observatories at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, confirming rumors about the observation of a never-before-seen astronomical phenomena.
They were the Panel on Optical and Infrared Observatories from the Ground, part of a larger effort known as the Decadal Survey, convened by the National Academy of Sciences every 10 years to set priorities for astronomy and give advice to the government on where to spend money.
On a spring evening in the Oakland hills, our own sun putting on a spectacular display as it slowly set over the Golden Gate Bridge, Vakoch and I met at one of the observatories at the Chabot Space and Science Center to take a peek at Gliese 411.
Since the early 1990s, space-based observatories have built up increasingly precise portraits of the cosmic microwave background and, true to Dr Peebles's predictions, these show that temperature variations of just one hundred-thousandth of a degree map onto the observed distribution of matter and energy in the universe.
"With a larger signal receiving area and more flexibility, FAST will be able to scan two times more sky area than Arecibo, with three to five times higher sensitivity," Li Di, a chief scientist with the National Astronomical Observatories under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told China Daily last year.
To the naked eye, this celestial collision won't appear as much, but Earth-based observatories should be able to measure the resulting change in the orbit of Didymos B around Didymos A. Even a small nudge should have an impact on its orbital trajectory, which will become more obvious over time.
These new observations are exciting, but Murchikova said "we still have no good understanding of how" the accretion process actually works at Sagittarius A*. A deeper dive into the new ALMA data, plus observations by other observatories, will hopefully reveal more about the monster parked at the core of our galaxy.
Not only did it occur during a so-called solar minimum, when activity in the sun's 11-year cycle of energy release is at its lowest, thereby reducing the amount of "clutter" for certain kinds of research, it also happened to streak directly above several of the world's most prominent observatories.
Even if SpaceX's new spacecraft-darkening coating works well enough to hide Starlink from stargazers, McDowell said the project remains a significant risk to ground-based and likely even space-based observatories, especially those that survey large sections of the sky for interesting objects to target with more powerful telescopes.

Less than two seconds after this burst had begun, a pair of space-based observatories, NASA's Fermi Telescope and the European Space Agency's International Gamma-ray Astrophysics Laboratory, detected a burst of gamma rays coming from a galaxy known as NGC 4993, 130m light-years from Earth in a constellation called Hydra.
"Right now, we're organizing lots of different telescopes," Wright said in an interview with UC Berkeley's SETI program, noting that observers on both Keck telescopes in Hawaii were going to look at Tabby's Star tonight, along with, hopefully, folks at several other observatories elsewhere in the United States and around the world.
When IceCube put out an alert to scan the patch of sky in the constellation Orion where this neutrino likely originated, more than a dozen observatories answered the call, including Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, and the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System.
As soon as possible, they send a bulletin to all of the associated observatories, including information like the probability that the event was real, a timestamp and location in the sky, and what kind of event it might have been—for instance, two black holes colliding, or a neutron star colliding with a black hole.
"This rare, 'Frankenstein' galaxy formed and is able to survive because it lies in a quiet little suburban neighborhood of the universe, where none of the hubbub of the more crowded parts can bother it," said researcher Mark Seibert, based at the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution for Science in California, in a JPL statement.

"The subsurface at the CE-4 landing site is much more transparent to radio waves, and this qualitative observation suggests a totally different geological context for the two landing sites," said Li Chunlai, research professor and deputy director-general of the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who led the study published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances.
