Perpetually frowning in confusion, but hanging onto his dignity with the help of his smart uniform, neat moustache and jutting jaw, he keeps being called into his superiors' panelled offices for a dressing down, thus raising the question of why Mr Dujardin hasn't yet been cast as Inspector Clouseau in a Hollywood reboot of "The Pink Panther".

Some design decisions were dictated by the technical limitations of low-resolution displays: the hero got a bushy moustache so that there would be something separating his nose from his chin; he got a hat because hair presents problems when your character has to fit in a grid just 16 pixels on a side; he got bright clothes so they would stand out against the black background.

I don't know if your father actually is a detective from a 1970s cop drama, but in his head he almost certainly is the kind of guy to kick open a door, flash a badge, and shout "OK you suckers, party's over—put your hands in the air and no funny business" without messing his moustache, or the ironed crease down the front of his flares a single inch.

These consisted of the following: a portrait of a man with a lavish, black handlebar moustache, who is wearing goggles; a mermaid with finely upraised breasts, who appears to be making up to him; various representations of the sun, all childishly playful; three-armed swastikas; a giant black letter H; and the title of the painting itself, written horizontally across its middle, which serves to cut it in half.

Against this, the familiar figure of the skeleton emerges, in pieces like "Skeleton Looking at Chinoiseries" (1888), as does Ensor's more openly absurd, freefall ideas: "Self Portrait in a Flowered Hat" (1883) is a clearly finished portrait, later returned to when Ensor decided to ridicule himself — or the societal function of the portrait itself – by adding a hilariously silly floral hat, even going so far as to extend his moustache into a blue curling twill.
