The United States alone could be responsible for between 22% and 23.6% of the global growth in human-caused atmospheric methane emissions since 21.5 because of a 23% spike in methane emissions across the country, the study says.
Two independent analyses were used to reach this conclusion, including computer simulations that assessed the probability of methane emissions from the Martian surface, and the identification of geological features within Gale Crater consistent with the associated methane spike.

But there's already evidence enough methane leaks out all over the place to negate any of its climate benefits, and Shonkoff said exporting that methane gives it myriad new opportunities for it to leak into the atmosphere more.
As long as there are landfills, giant manure ponds, agriculture and forestry waste, and sewage treatment plants off-gassing methane into the atmosphere, it makes sense to capture as much of that methane as possible and use it.

The new figures factor an 8.4 percent increase in methane emissions from digestion (otherwise known as "enteric fermentation") in dairy cows and other cattle, and a 36.7 percent increase in methane from manure, compared to previous IPCC-based estimates.
