The film concerns the residents of a large terraced house in London between Christmas 1938 and September 1939. Among them are the landlady, Mrs Vizzard (played by Joyce Carey), who is a widow and a believer in spiritualism; Mrs Josser (Fay Compton), Mr Josser (Wylie Watson) and their teenage daughter (Susan Shaw); the eccentric spiritualist medium Mr Squales (Sim); the colourful Connie Coke (Ivy St. Helier), the young motor mechanic Percy Boon (Attenborough) and his mother (Gladys Henson). Percy is in love with the Jossers' daughter and turns to crime to raise money to impress her with, but he bungles a car theft and finds himself accused of murder. Mr Josser digs into his retirement fund to hire the boy a lawyer.

Following the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, factory foreman Jimmy Josser joins the regiment of his employer. While serving on the western front he manages to thwart a plan by German secret agents.

The novel was also adapted for Thames Television as a series, broadcast in seven one-hour episodes from 6 September to 18 October 1977. The cast included Derek Farr as Mr Josser, Madge Ryan as Mrs Vizzard and Patricia Hayes as Connie Coke.

Ernie Lotinga (1876–1951) was a British comedian and film actor. Lotinga became known for the Josser series of comedy film in which he starred during the 1930s. After seeing him perform on stage in 1927, T.S. Eliot wrote to Virginia Woolf that Lotinga was, "the greatest living British histrionic artist, in the purest tradition of British obscenity." He was married to the popular music hall performer Hettie King from 1901 until their divorce in 1917.

John Daniel 'Josser' Watling (born 11 May 1925) is a former professional footballer who played in The Football League for Bristol Rovers between 1945 and 1963. Watling was a one-club man, whose only senior team was Bristol Rovers. Prior to joining The Pirates, he played for Plain House Youth Club, the Royal Navy, and St Andrew's Boys Club in Avonmouth, and he also had an unsuccessful trial at Plymouth Argyle at the end of the Second World War. He joined Bristol Rovers in October 1945, initially as an amateur, before signing his first professional contract in January 1947.

Her husband was a music hall comedian, singer and theatre proprietor, billed as Dan Roe from 1898, who appeared in films in the 1920s and 1930s, often as the comic character PC Jimmy Josser. They had one child and divorced in 1917, a decree nisi being granted on 16 March by Sir Samuel Evans on the grounds of King's misconduct with the vaudeville artist and actor Jack Norworth. The divorce was not contested.
