Javier Gayoso, who is the son of professional basketball player Jayvee Gayoso, played basketball in his youth but eventually decided to focus on football, which he started playing at age 4. His mother introduced him to football in kindergarten and allowed him to participate in a football camp. Gayoso attended the Ateneo de Manila High School and is currently pursuing collegiate stutdies at the Ateneo de Manila University. Despite his decision to end his collegiate football stint in February 2020, he expressed intent to finish his studies.

The highly recruited Hudson suited up for some varsity games while playing mostly with the jayvee. In the final period, the Coffee Makers led, 110-103, when the Rhum Makers worked their way back to within two points, 108-110 with 1:25 left, Abe King split his charities in the next play for a 111-108 Great Taste lead with 56 seconds remaining, Andre McKoy of Tanduay then hit a jumper to narrow the gap, Willie Pearson of Great Taste missed a jumper and Jayvee Yango pulled down the rebound, McKoy fished a foul off Pearson and sank two crucial free throws with 12 seconds to go, Great Taste coach Baby Dalupan opted to call a timeout earlier when McKoy was about to take his charities and the Coffee Makers inbounded from the backcourt, Michael Holton's jumper from the left side of the court was too long and Jayvee Yango grabbed the ball and pass it to Rob Williams who threw the ball in the air, giving Tanduay a 3-1 series lead and a win away from its first championship.

In 1996, Ginebra used the top overall pick to draft controversial center Marlou Aquino from Adamson University. Aquino was a big star in the PBL for Nikon and Stag Pale Pilsen but was involved in a controversial scandal in terms of his academic status at Adamson, although this was later neglected when he jumped pro. Aquino showed the promise Ginebra fans expected during the All-Filipino Conference. It also showed the discovery of former University of Santo Tomas guard Bal David as one of the team's popular players along with Vince Hizon, Jayvee Gayoso, and Pido Jarencio.

A PBL All-star game serve as a fitting preliminary game for the much awaited PBA All-star game on June 3 at the ULTRA. Standout PBL players were divided into two teams and the respective coaches were Derek Pumaren and Francis Rodriguez. The North team with players coming from Luzon were composed of Eric Reyes, Eugene Quilban, Joey Guanio, Victor Pablo, Vergel Meneses, Johnedel Cardel, Rene Hawkins, Johnny Abarrientos, Jayvee Gayoso and Arthur dela Cruz. The South team from Visayas and Mindanao had Bonel Balingit, Mark Anthony Tallo, Emilio Chuatico, Edgar Macaraya, Jun Limpot, Bong Ravena, Allen Sasan, Jun Jabar and Cebu sensation Felix Duhig.

When Crispa folded at the end of the 1984 season, he and Crispa teammate Abet Guidaben moved to Tanduay and instantly transformed the team into a playoff contender. Before the start of the 1985 Third Conference, Guidaben was traded to Manila Beer in exchange for Ramon Fernandez, thus ushering a bright new era for the team still in search of a championship. In the 1986 Reinforced (First) Conference, Tanduay, now led by himself and Fernandez with supporting casts point guard Willie Generalao, forwards Jayvee Yango and Padim Israel and imports Rob Williams and Andre McKoy, finally won its first ever PBA title.

The Rhum Makers went up by nine, 75-66 in the third period, but Great Taste countered with a 14-2 run to take the lead back, 80-77. The game was last tied at 109-all, Jayvee Yango's three-point play gave Tanduay a 112-109 lead with 1:38 to go, the Coffee Makers were down by two points twice, 112-114, after Michael Holton converted a triple, and 114-116, in an exciting finish, Great Taste had a chance to tie the count after a split free throw from the Rhum Makers but Andre McKoy stole the ball from Holton with 14 seconds remaining to prevent a possible game-tying three pointer.
