In his drawing "Untitled (Car in Landscape)," a scene of an intricate car and landscape looks half-real, half-fantasy: A tree-like structure bends to form a bridge; the car is bright pink and seems to contain a fourth dimension — curved arms protect its shell and wheels, and a domed top protects its Go-Kart-style seating.

Like the children at Gwacheon Ice Rink, they were trained as conventional speedskaters until the paths divided — one toward short-track speedskating, with its bursts of power and maneuverability (like driving a Ferrari on a go-kart track, as one coach at the rink said), the other toward long track, with its steady, graceful churn against only the clock.

"With Nascar, in particular, unlike Formula One and IndyCar racing, there are different levels of racing that you can make a living at, and in many ways, Nascar is a great place for her to do what she's doing," said Steve Landauer, who bought the first go-kart for Julia and her younger sister, Emma, now 22, and brother Aidan, 19.

Suspects include three teenagers in a purple Volkswagen bug; a Native American who piles trash on the back of his go-kart; and members of the children's' family, including their father, Tom (Scoot McNairy), whose marriage to their mother, Lucy (Mamie Gummer), has hit the skids, and Lucy's cousin Dan, who once crashed with them for a six-month stretch.

And my kids know a new truth about me: I might not be able to build a go-kart, sink a 3-pointer, or stay awake for 10 consecutive minutes during a single "Star Wars" film, but when it comes to thrill rides, I will wait as long as it takes for the front seat and I will hold your hand and scream as we orbit through space.
