The raptorial foreleg of a praying mantis The term raptorial implies much the same as predatory but most often refers to modifications of an arthropod's foreleg that make it function for the grasping of prey while it is consumed, where the gripping surfaces are formed from the opposing faces of two successive leg segments (see illustration). This is distinctly different from the grasping mechanism of a structure such as a scorpion's claw (a "chela") in which one of the opposing surfaces is an articulated digit, and not a leg segment. While this is most widely known in mantises, similarly modified legs can be found in some crustaceans (e.g., mantis shrimp), and various insect families, such as Mantispidae, Belostomatidae, Nepidae, and Naucoridae (all members of these groups have raptorial forelegs).

After the Curlin Stakes, Winslow Homer was sidelined again with a colyndar fracture in his left foreleg. The northern cricket frog is one of North America's three smallest vertebrates, ranging from long. Its dorsal coloration varies widely, and includes greys, greens, and browns, often in irregular blotching patterns. One New York biologist has identified six distinct color morphs and four pattern morphs, and several intergrades between these.(Westerveld,1977). He was sired by the disqualified 2000 Guineas winner Nureyev out of the mare Fire The Groom. Following the Wood Memorial, it was discovered he had a minor fracture in his left foreleg, and was officially out of the Kentucky Derby. Crista acustica (also Siebold's organ, or crista acoustica) is a part of the hearing organ (tibial organ) in some insects (e.g. grasshoppers, crickets, katydids). It has been found that B. craniifer is capable of regenerating some of its tissues. B.craniifer can regenerate more proximal tissues and structures in a more distal amputation level on its leg after a distal part of the femur foreleg was transplanted to a proximal level of a hindleg tibia. Eurobird was a "leggy" chestnut mare with a broad white blaze and a long white sock on her left foreleg bred in Ireland by Mrs S Rogers. During her racing career he was owned by Gerald Jennings and trained in Ireland by John Oxx. She was sired by Ela-Mana-Mou an outstanding middle distance performer whose wins included the Eclipse Stakes and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1980. His other progeny included Double Trigger, Snurge, Emmson and Almaarad.

Retired after the 1966 racing season, Pretendre was sent to the United States to stand at stud in Kentucky. Part of his first crop foaled in 1968 was a bay colt born with a noticeably crooked foreleg. Considered to have no future in racing, he was sold as a yearling for a mere $1,200 at the Keeneland Sales. Acquired by Venezuelan interests, the horse was named Canonero and raced at age two in Venezuela where it earned an undistinguished record.

Hill Prince's performances were still good enough to be voted 1951's Handicap Horse of the Year in the Daily Racing Form and Thoroughbred Racing Association polls. The Turf and Sport Digest award was won by Citation. As a five-year- old, Hill Prince won the San Marcos Handicap at Santa Anita in February, but finished fifth when favorite for the Santa Anita Handicap. Subsequent examinations revealed "filling" in the horse's right foreleg and Hill Prince was retired to stud.

On 13 November 1928, a shield with the city walls and a gate on the lawn in the upper half and the lamb in the lower was adopted. As Ruffian left the starting gate, she hit her shoulder hard before straightening herself. The first quarter-mile (402 m) was run in 22 seconds, with Ruffian ahead by a nose. Little more than later, Ruffian was in front by half a length when she changed leads, followed by an audible crack: both sesamoid bones in her right foreleg had snapped.

His eight-length victory prompted his handlers to try him in the Belmont Stakes, where he faced Kentucky Derby winner Proud Clarion and the winner of the Preakness Stakes and future U.S. Horse of the Year and Hall of Famer Damascus. Shipped to Belmont Park, Cool Reception finished second to Damascus in the 1967 Belmont Stakes. Ridden by jockey Johnny Sellers, he raced the last two hundred yards on a broken right foreleg.

He defeated Best Pal in what was called "the single most compelling performance of the year" in the Grade-1 1991 Santa Anita Derby. Neo Universe sustained an injury to his right foreleg and was retired from racing at a ceremony at Sapporo Racecourse in September 2004.

In this pouch (preferentially the left side), the animal stores collected food to bring to the surface. This pouch also holds a rock, unique to the otter, that is used to break open shellfish and clams. To open hard shells, it may pound its prey with both paws against the rock which it places on its chest.

In November 2016 the foal was put up for auction at Tattersalls and was bought for 340,000 guineas by Michael Magnier, Mayfair and P&R; Doyle. He entered the ownership of John Magnier's Coolmore Stud (represented by Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith) in partnership with the Niarchos family's Flaxman Stables. Like most Coolmore horses he was sent into training with Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle.

The ponies are most commonly bay, chestnut, or grey. The central figure of the relief is a horse moving to the right, with its head pulled upwards away from the right edge of the relief. A portion of the horses nose is missing, the only substantial damage to the piece. Its left foreleg is raised and bent, the right is stretched out and planted firmly in the ground.

Elocutionist was scheduled to run in the third leg of the Triple Crown. However, a week before the race, Paul Adwell announced the colt had suffered an injury to his right foreleg and would not run in the Belmont Stakes. Elocutionist never recovered from his injury and on September 8, owner Cashman announced that the horse was being retired and would be syndicated to stud. During a career that spanned seven months, Elocutionist finished on the board in all twelve of his starts, winning nine, running second once, and taking third in the remaining two.

Sam Loates, who rode Sir Visto to victory in the Derby In the St Leger on 11 September Sir Visto started 9/4 favourite in a field of eleven. His connections were given a cause for concern on the day before the race when the colt was left unattended and became cast in his box. He sustained a minor injury to a foreleg but was allowed to run. As at Epsom, Sir Visto was held up towards the rear of the field as the pace was set first by Lord Chester and then Matchmaker.

Rested after her tough win over Optimistic Gal in the Acorn Stakes, Dearly Precious was in the hunt for another annual Championship when she suffered a bowed tendon in her left foreleg on July 11, 1976 while winning the Dark Mirage Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack. Her racing career over, Dearly Precious retired having won twelve of her sixteen starts, and eventually served as a broodmare. Her offspring met with limited success in racing, the best of which was a mating to Nijinsky that produced stakes winner Mister Modesty.

On her only start she finished fifth of the six runners behind Mutafaweq in the Coronation Cup at Epsom in June. Shortly after the race it was announced that she had sustained a tendon injury in her right foreleg and would be unable to race again. At the end of June she was sold to the Darley Stud as a prospective broodmare for a reported £3,500,000.

Leading Light is a bay horse with a broad white blaze and a white coronet on his right foreleg bred in Ireland by Lynch-Bages Ltd. He is one of many top-class horses sired by Montjeu. Others include the Derby winners Motivator, Authorized, Pour Moi and Camelot, the St Leger winners Scorpion and Masked Marvel, and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Hurricane Run. Leading Light's dam Dance parade was a top-class racemare whose wins included the Queen Mary Stakes and the Fred Darling Stakes.

Ernest Woods and John L. Greer each bought a one-third interest in the horse. Trained by Jolley's son LeRoy, and ridden by future U.S. Hall of Fame jockey Bill Hartack, the two-year-old Ridan went unbeaten in seven starts in 1961 that included the important Arlington Futurity and Washington Park Futurity. Soreness in a foreleg cut short his season, and although he had handily beaten another two-year-old star, Crimson Satan, the 1961 U.S. Juvenile Champion honors went to Crimson Satan. The choice was hotly debated in racing circles.

She was trained during her track career by Alain de Royer-Dupré and was ridden in most of her races by Christophe Soumillon. He became a very successful sire of fillies, with his offspring including the multiple Group One winners Zarkava and Timepiece.

The shoulder-in is a lateral movement in dressage used to supple and balance the horse and encourage use of its hindquarters. It is performed on three tracks, where the horse is bent around the rider's inside leg so that the horse's inside hind leg and outside foreleg travel on the same line. For some authors it is a "key lesson" of dressage, performed on a daily basis.

My Juliet began her four-year-old campaign in California, finishing third in the Malibu Stakes on January 10, 1976. She returned to the east coast to win an overnight handicap at Aqueduct before finishing eighth in the Gallorette Handicap. She then won the Vagrancy Handicap for fillies and mares at Belmont Park but fractured a foreleg while doing so. Out of racing for more than five months, she came back to beat Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Bold Forbes and other males in winning the Vosburgh Stakes, also at Belmont Park.

Pretty Pollyanna is a bay filly with a white blaze and a white sock on her left foreleg bred by her owner Bill Gredley at his Stetchworth Stud near Newmarket, Suffolk. As a yearling the filly was put up for auction at Tattersalls in October 2017, but the bidding stopped short of the reserve price of 50,000 guineas. The filly was sent into training with Michael Bell at Newmarket. She was sired by Oasis Dream, a sprinter who won the July Cup and the Nunthorpe Stakes in 2003 before becoming a very successful breeding stallion.

Fourstars Allstar was a bay horse with a white blaze and a long white sock on his left foreleg bred in New York by his owner Richard Bomze. The colt was trained throughout his racing career by Leo O'Brien. His sire Compliance was a full-brother to both Try My Best and El Gran Senor but less successful than his siblings and made little impact when racing in Europe before returning to the United States. He was purchased by Bomze from Windfields Farm to stand as a breeding stallion in New York.

After examining the photo finish, the racecourse judges declared a dead heat. On his final appearance of the season the horse was sent to Australia to contest the Melbourne Cup over 3200 metres at Flemington Racecourse on 1 November. Before the race a share in the horse was acquired by the Australian owners Kevin Bamford, Colleen Bamford and Gerry Ryan. Carrying a weight of 126 pounds (the second highest in the race) he finished in 20th place in the 23 runner field having sustained a hairline fracture to the cannon bone of his left foreleg.

On his final start, Royal Palace contested the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. His main rival was expected to be Ribero, who had defeated Sir Ivor in the Irish Derby. In the straight Royal Palace sustained an injury to the suspensory ligament in his left foreleg, but stayed on to win by half a length from Felicio, with the future Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Topyo in third and Ribero fourth. The injury ended his racing career and he was retired to stud.

The scapulocoracoid of Limnoscelis had two fused coracoid elements, which it shares with a number of basal amniotes, but which differentiates Limnoscelis from its fellow diadectomorphs (which only had a single coracoid).

The race was delayed by half an hour by a series of false starts and the early pace was unusually slow. May-day, ridden by Frank Boyce was restrained by her jockey until the straight where she moved up on the outside and had "the appearance of a winner" when she fell heavily approaching the final furlong. May-day got to her feet but had sustained a complete fracture of her left foreleg just above the fetlock and was immediately euthanised. The race was won by the 20/1 outsider Pussy.

On his final run of the season, Danoli returned to England for a second Aintree Hurdle. He was always among the leaders and ran on gamely in the closing stages to win by three quarters of a length from Boro Eight, with Large Action third and Doran's Pride fourth. Danoli returned from the race badly lame, and examinations revealed a fracture of the cannon bone in his right foreleg. He was operated on at the University of Liverpool's Leahurst Veterinary College, and his future as a racehorse was left in the balance.

In horses, it is more often than not an undesirable gait form, also known as rotary and round galloping, and as moving disunited, cross- firing, and cross-cantering. In animals such as dogs, deer, and elk, however, this form of the gait is the norm. Some authorities define the leading leg in the singular form as the last to leave the ground before the one or two periods of suspension within each stride. In these cases, because the canter has only one moment of suspension, the leading leg is considered to be the foreleg.

With a crowd of more than fifty thousand watching from the grandstand and millions watching on national television, Ruffian had a half-length lead on the colt when both sesamoid bones in her right foreleg snapped. Despite surgery, she had to be euthanized. Actor Sam Shepard played the role of Whiteley in the made-for-television movie Ruffian which aired June 9, 2007, on the ABC television network.

Black-capped squirrel monkeys are mostly found in trees and will often leap 1–2 metres between branches. As a yearling he was offered for sale at the Doncaster Bloodstock Sales and was bought for 1,800 guineaas by representatives of C T Olley. He was sent into training with Ryan Price at his Down House stable in Findon, West Sussex. Sandford Lad was from the first crop of foals sired by St Alphage, a sprinter who finished second in the King George Stakes.

The gudastviri is made up of two main parts: The first being a whole sheep or goat skin, or a sewed, rectangular leather bag (“guda”). The second is a yoked double-chante ("stviri"), terminating in a single horn bell, which makes the gudastviri a member of the hornpipe class of bagpipes. There is a small wooden blow-pipe (khreko) with a check-valve tied into one leg, or corner of the bag. A fixed round wooden stock holding the chanter, is tied into the bag, in the opposite foreleg, or corner.

Targowice was a "most attractive" bay horse with a white sock on his left foreleg bred in Kentucky by Kerr Stable. He was sold for $49,000 as a foal and acquired by the Wertheimer family: he raced in the colours of Germaine, the widow of Pierre Wertheimer. The colt was sent to Europe and entered training with Alec Head in France and was ridden in most of his races by his trainer's son Freddy. He was sired by Round Table a three-time American Turf Champion who was named Horse of the Year in 1958.

However, the horse abruptly slowed down and lost the lead to eventual winner Lemon Drop Kid with 1/8 mile to go, ultimately finishing third behind second-place Vision and Verse. Sensing that something was wrong with the horse, jockey Chris Antley eased Charismatic up in the final furlong, jumped off right after the finish line and then held up the colt's left front leg. Charismatic's foreleg had fractured in multiple places involving the cannon bone and sesamoids, and Antley's actions probably saved his life by avoiding a more catastrophic injury.

Reform was born with a slight malformation of his foreleg and was small and weak as a yearling. His breeders' decided not to send him to the sales, as it was felt that his unimpressive appearance would not attract buyers and would reflect poorly on the stud's reputation. The colt was therefore retained and raced in the colours of the Ballymacoll Stud's owner Michael Sobell. The colt was named after the Reform Club, a gentlemen's club on the south side of Pall Mall, and sent into training with Gordon Richards at Whitsbury in Hampshire.

Wild Illusion is a bay mare with a white sock on her left foreleg who was bred and owned by Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin organisation. She is trained by Charlie Appleby, whose stable is based at Newmarket, Suffolk, but typically relocates to Dubai in winter. She was sired by Dubawi a top-class son of Dubai Millennium, whose wins included the Irish 2000 Guineas and the Prix Jacques Le Marois. At stud, Dubawi has been a highly-successful breeding stallion, siring major winners such as Monterosso, Al Kazeem, Makfi, Lucky Nine and Night of Thunder.

After the Breeders' Cup race, his owner sent Royal Anthem to the Payson Park thoroughbred training facility near Indiantown, Florida, where his conditioning was taken over by U.S. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, who had trained Royal Anthem's sire, Theatrical. In February 2000, the horse made his first start for Mott with a win in the Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Handicap under jockey Jerry Bailey. He was scheduled to compete in the March 25 Dubai Sheema Classic at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse, but a swollen tendon in his left foreleg prevented him from competing and ended his racing career.

Phosphorus was reported to be "in physic" at the time of this race, meaning that he was running under some kind of medication. Phosphorus was moved to a base at Epsom to complete his preparation for the Derby, but on his first gallop after arriving he sprained a foreleg. He was lame and confined to his box for four days, after which the soreness appeared to have faded although some swelling remained. By this time, however, Day had heard of the colt's problems and rejected him in favour of a colt named Wisdom as his ride in the race.

His sire, Vaguely Noble, won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1968 before becoming a successful breeding stallion whose best progeny included Dahlia, Exceller and Empery. Sporting Yankee's dam Sale Day was a top-class racemare who won the Spinster Stakes in 1968 and produced several other winners including the Yellow Ribbon Stakes winner Amazer. She was also a sister of Hurry to Market the American Champion Two-Year-Old Male Horse of 1963.

In early February, Bold Lad suffered a popped splint in his right foreleg while at Hialeah Park Race Track. He did not return to racing until April 5, when he scored a win over older horses in a six-furlong sprint at Aqueduct Racetrack. He then ran third in the 1⅛-mile Wood Memorial Stakes and won the Derby Trial Stakes. Sent off in the 1¼-mile Kentucky Derby as the betting favorite, Bold Lad was in contention at the top of the stretch, but then tired badly and finished 10th in the field of 11 horses behind winner Lucky Debonair.

While the algae is harmless to the bears, it is often a worry to the zoos housing them, and affected animals are sometimes washed in a salt solution, or mild peroxide bleach to make the fur white again. Males have significantly longer hairs on their forelegs, which increase in length until the bear reaches 14 years of age. The Brazil-nut poison frog is a very small frog with a snout-to-vent length of ; females are usually larger than males. The dorsal surface is of a shiny black colour with spots and markings of white or various shades of yellow. There is a bright yellow or orange spot where the foreleg joins the body and two more similarly coloured spots on either side of the knee joint on the hind leg, which combine to make a single large spot when the animal is stationary. A further spot on the underside of the calf is only visible from below.

He returned to the track for the Tokyo Yushun over 2400 metres on 27 May and started the 1.1/1 favourite against seventeen opponents.

Phymata americana feed on a wide variety of prey, most often including small bees, moths, and flies. As their common name suggests, P. americana are sit-and-wait ambush predators, resting on flower heads where they grab visiting insects with large raptorial foreleg weapons. Females can be larger than males, and often have disproportionately longer weapons. Sexual dimorphism in weapon morphology in P. americana may have evolved due to sex differences in prey capture strategies, with females capturing prey from underneath flower heads and males either eating prey already captured by females or capturing smaller prey on plant stems while searching for mates.

Schumachov let it thaw until he could retrieve the tusks for sale to the ivory trade. While in Yakutsk in 1806, Michael Friedrich Adams heard about the frozen mammoth. Upon arrival at the location, Adams discovered that wild animals had eaten most of the organs and flesh of the mammoth, including the trunk. He examined the carcass and realised what was left would still be the most complete mammoth recovered by that time. Adams recovered the entire skeleton, apart from the tusks, which Shumachov had already sold, and one foreleg, most of the skin, and nearly 18 kg (40 lb) of hair.

Charismatic (March 13, 1996 – February 19, 2017) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the first two legs of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing in 1999. Early in his career, Charismatic was entered in claiming races but he improved rapidly during his three-year-old year. After winning the 1999 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, Charismatic had the lead in the stretch of the Belmont Stakes before suddenly falling back and finishing third. He was quickly pulled up by jockey Chris Antley, who dismounted and cradled the horse's fractured foreleg to prevent further injury.

Moore raced Oklahoma Star all over Oklahoma, matching him against all comers, usually riding the horse himself because of fears that the opposing side would bribe the jockey. Because Moore was almost fifty years old and weighed about 150 pounds, this meant that Oklahoma Star didn't always win every race, but he won enough. Ronald Mason, who later owned the horse, told Robert Denhardt that the best race distance for the stallion was an eighth of a mile. Oklahoma Star was a mahogany bay in color, with just a white star on his forehead, a small white spot on his left foreleg, and a white sock on his left hind leg.

As sometimes happens, a race of this nature took a toll on both horses. Grundy ran only once more without success, and Bustino never raced again. In The Observer newspaper's list of the "10 greatest horse races of all time," the match between Bustino and Grundy in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot Racecourse on 26 July 1975, was ranked number two: number one was the race between Quashed and Omaha for the 1936 Ascot Gold Cup. Colombo, a large, powerful, lop-eared horse with a "raking, effortless stride" was bred by the shipping magnate Sir Alec Black. He was bay with a white star, a white sock on his left foreleg and a white coronet on his right hind leg. Shortly after Colombo was foaled, Black decided to sell off his bloodstock and the colt was bought relatively cheaply for 510 guineas by Lord Glanely at Doncaster in 1932. Colombo was sired by Manna, the winner of the 2000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby, out of Lady Nairne, a mare who was also bought by Glanely at another one of Black's dispersal sales.

Chestnut The chestnut, also known as a night eye, is a callosity on the body of a horse or other equine, found on the inner side of the leg above the knee on the foreleg and, if present, below the hock on the hind leg. It is believed to be a vestigial toe, and along with the ergot form the three toes of some other extinct Equidae. chapter 2 Darren Naish dissents from this belief, noting that the chestnut is "not associated with the metacarpus or metatarsus, the only places where digits occur." Just The Judge is a bay or brown mare with a white star and a white sock on her left foreleg bred in Ireland by Joan Keaney Dempsey. As a yearling in September 2011 the filly was offered for sale at the Goffs Orby sale and was bought for €50,000 by the bloodstock agency BBA Ireland and the trainer Charles Hills. She entered the ownership of the Sangster family and Matthew Green and was taken into training by Hills at Lambourn in Berkshire. She is from the second crop of foals sired by Lawman who won the Prix du Jockey Club and the Prix Jean Prat in 2006.

While at a walk, as the horse raises each foreleg off the ground, it lifts the leg in an exaggerated upward and forward manner. While the Spanish walk is loosely affiliated with the field of dressage, it is more of a trick or circus movement and not included in any modern dressage tests. It is often taught to horses of the Andalusian and Lusitano breeds and is considered a part of the horse culture in Spain.

After being restrained towards the middle of the field, Peregrine moved up into contention on the inside rail on the final turn and as he took the lead entering the final furlong he looked likely to win easily. Iroquois however, produced a strong late rush and Peregrine was beaten half a length in a "splendid" finish. Shortly after the race it was reported that Peregrine had been bought for 7,000 guineas by Lord Alington. He had sustained an injury to the suspensory ligaments or the "back tendons" so painful that he was unable to put any weight on the injured leg, making his participation at Epsom extremely doubtful. Morton worked on the injury for the next week, with one treatment involving wrapping the affected leg in cabbage leaves. He was able to deal with the superficial lameness, but informed Joel that the underlying condition remained and that although Sunstar would be able to run in the Derby, any further aggravation of the injury would almost certainly end the horses career.

The "horn" between the antenna sockets which is present in many geometer moths is usually exceptionally well developed in the Nacophorini. Some have a crest of thorns on their thorax, and a few have a spine at the tip of their foreleg tibia. The hindleg tibia is usually swollen in males, which also often have a "penciltip" of hairs tucked into a groove. Together with a comb of setae on the third abdominal segment, these structures probably serve to distribute pheromones, and while the abdominal comb is found in many Ennominae, the full set of structures is rarely found outside of the Nacophorini, which usually possess at least a swollen tibia or tibial "pencil", and often both.

On 12 May Velocipede began his three-year-old campaign in the York "St Leger" over a distance of one and three-quarter miles. Ridden by Bill Scott, he started at odds of 1/2 and won from Mr Broadhead's unnamed grey colt and four others. On his only other run of the season, Velocipede contested the St Leger Stakes at Doncaster, in which Scott also ran The Colonel who had beaten in a run-off for the Epsom Derby after running a dead-heat with Cadland. Before the race Velocipede had beaten The Colonel in a trial gallop, but injured himself in the process and appeared for the race heavily bandaged on his right foreleg.

Bula suffered a defeat on his return in the Autumn, finishing second by a neck to I’m Happy in the Woolton Hill Hurdle at Newbury after making a mistake at the last flight. He returned to winning ways in the Skeaping Trophy Hurdle at Sandown, but badly bruised a foreleg in the process and missed nearly four months of racing. Bula returned to racing in February and, despite the layoff, won the Kingwell Hurdle for the second time by four lengths hard held from Irish Sweeps winner Kelanne. Despite the interrupted campaign, Bula’s Kingwell win confirmed his well being and he was rated an 8/11 favourite to win his second Champion Hurdle.

He took the lead from the outsider Rankin a furlong from the finish, veering sharply to the right as he did so. The colt appeared to recover quickly and held the late challenge of Master Willie to win by three-quarters of a length, with Rankin in third place. Henbit's success in the race was the second in two years for Hern and Carson, who had won with Troy in 1979, and his winning time of 2:34.77 was the fastest since Nijinsky in 1970. Henbit returned from the race with a large swelling on his right foreleg, and examinations revealed that he had sustained a hairline fracture to his cannon bone.

Going off at odds of 3-20, Count Fleet rated behind the early pace set by Bossuet, then started his move on the final turn to win by four lengths. Count Fleet was injured in the left foreleg during the race, but although the skin was broken he recovered quickly. On April 17, Count Fleet returned in the Wood Memorial Stakes, going off as the 1-4 favorite. He was again injured, this time suffering a three-inch slice along the coronet band of a hoof, possibly caused when he was bumped at the start but more likely by a strike from one of his other legs as he started to accelerate.

At York Racecourse on 22 August he contested the International Stakes but proved no match for Roaring Lion, and was beaten five length into fourth place. The colt produced a much better effort in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown in which he took the lead in the straight and looked likely to win but was run down in the final strides and beaten a neck by his old rival Roaring Lion. Saxon Warrior was found to be lame after his run in the Irish Champion Stakes and a veterinary examination revealed a serious injury to the flexor tendon in his left foreleg. Aidan O'Brien announced on 16 September that the colt was to be retired from racing.

As she flailed about with her legs, she repeatedly knocked the heavy plaster cast against her own elbow until the elbow, too, was smashed to bits. The vet who treated her said that her elbow was shattered and looked like a piece of ice after being smashed on the ground. The cast slipped, and as it became dislodged it ripped open her foreleg all over again, undoing the surgery. The medical team, knowing that Ruffian would probably not survive more extensive surgery for the repair of her leg and elbow (much less the long period of stall rest required after surgery), euthanized her shortly afterward at 2:25 am on July 7.

His victory made Cauthen the first American jockey for 65 years to win the Derby and the first to ride the winners of both the Kentucky Derby (on Affirmed in 1978) and the Epsom original. After the race, Cauthen described Slip Anchor as the best horse he had ever ridden, including Affirmed, saying that "this horse kills them before they have a chance to get at him." After the Derby, Slip Anchor sustained an injury to his left foreleg in training and missed an intended run in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot Racecourse in July (won by Petoski). Slip Anchor returned to the track in the September Stakes at Kempton Park.

Sent to race in the United States, he won the Grade III Broward Handicap at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida, over 1700m by five and a half lengths. During his preparation for the Grade I Donn Handicap, Horse Chestnut fractured a piece of his splint bone on his near foreleg, resulting in his early retirement from racing. The Oppenheimers subsequently sold the majority of shares in Horse Chestnut to Seth Hancock's Claiborne Farm in Kentucky, where he went to stud. He was subsequently purchased by the Horse Chestnut Syndicate and relocated back to South Africa in 2009 and stood at Drakenstein Farm Stud where he stood 6 seasons until his death.

The first such objects found in the context of a Gallic sanctuary. These unique military and religious objects are now being studied by the team led by Christophe Maniquet, chief scientist site of Tintignac. In 2009, an aqueduct was discovered, 2 metres high and feeding a well 13 metres deep.

George Stern settled Sunstar in fourth or fifth place behind Bannockburn, Phryxus and Eton Boy, until the turn into the straight when he sent the favourite through a gap on the inside to take the lead. Sunstar went clear of the field, but Stedfast, who had made up a great deal of ground, emerged as his challenger and got to within a length of the leader a furlong from the finish. At this point Stern felt Sunstar falter as his suspect foreleg gave way, but despite his injury, the colt pulled ahead again and won by two lengths from Stedfast, with Royal Tudor four lengths back in third. His winning time of 3:36.8 equaled the second fastest time in the race's history.

Wheel of Fortune reappeared at Royal Ascot on 13 June in the Prince of Wales's Stakes in which she conceded weight to a field of top class colts and fillies. She was held up by Archer until the straight, and then showed impressive acceleration to settle the race in a few strides and won easily by one and a half lengths from Adventure with Rayon d'Or in third. Wheel of Fortune was then aimed at the St Leger and was made 6/4 favourite for the Doncaster race. In August Wheel of Fortune was sent to York where she won the Yorkshire Oaks and, despite signs of swelling in her left foreleg, she ran again two days later in the Great Yorkshire Stakes.

He won by three lengths despite being eased down by Piggott in the closing stages: according to Timeform he "slaughtered" the opposition. There was some concern after the race when the winner appeared to be lame, the result of a condition which caused internal bleeding in his left foreleg after exercise. The condition recurred after the July Cup at Newmarket, but did not affect Never So Bold in the race, as he accelerated from off the pace to win by two and a half lengths from Committed. Before the race, Sancho looked less than fully fit and was opposed in the betting, but after tracking Pavilion in the early running, he took the lead ten furlongs from the finish and looked poised to win easily. With a quarter mile to go however, he began to show signs of lameness and then broke down completely with an injury to his left foreleg. Immediately after the race the horse was found to be lame, having sustained an injury to his right foreleg and was taken receive treatment at a veterinary facility rather than taking part in the victory ceremony.

He had taken from the course in horse ambulance and subsequent veterinary examinations revealed that he had sustained a serious tendon injury to his right foreleg.

The term "sabino" is seldom used among American Quarter Horse breeders, as white patterning was originally considered undesirable. The American Quarter Horse breed was traditionally solid-colored and minimally-marked. Among Quarter Horse breeders, foals with ineligible amounts of white born to eligible parents were referred to as "cropouts," and, until 2004, horses that had areas of white hair rooted in pink skin beyond the gaskin on the hindleg, above the halfway point between the knee and elbow in the foreleg, or beyond the eye could not be registered. Due to the large number of horses that had these patterns, as well as a significant number of double dilute creams also caught up by this rule, the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) formed, allowing these horses to be registered as "Paints".

The win was a notable one for Unfuwain: as well as siring the first and third horses, he was the damsire of the runner-up. After the race Richard Hills said "I set out to track Bintalreef because I thought she was the quick one in the race, but they were going faster on the stands' side and I had to tack straight across to get the cover I needed and it took a couple of furlongs to get her settled. John Gosden got me to ride Lahan from behind in a gallop on Wednesday and what she did there gave me the confidence I needed for today". Lahan was being prepared for a run in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot when she sustained an injury to her right foreleg.

Giofra's 2012 debut saw her moved up in class for the Group Three Prix d'Harcourt over 2000 metres on 8 April at Longchamp and started second favourite behind her stablemate Vadamar, the winner of the Prix du Conseil de Paris. She raced in third before accelerating into the lead 300 metres from the finish and drew clear to win "comortably" by three lengths from Vadamar. Explaining the filly's delayed career, Alain de Royer-Dupré said "She had a problem with a foreleg, which meant we had to be patient with her, and she only ran three times last year but she showed when easily winning the Listed race here last October that she was Group class". The filly was stepped up again three weeks later for the Group One Prix Ganay over 2100 metres at the same course.

Rashi, in a responsum to Rabbi Yehuda the son of Rabbi Machir, attempted to justify the practice of the common folk withholding of the gift. Rashi cited the opinion of Rabbi Ilai I, who (as understood by the TalmudChullin 136a) believed that the commandment of reishit hagez does not apply outside Israel. Rashi then went a step further, saying that the priestly gifts (including foreleg, cheeks, maw) do not apply outside Israel, as the same logic applies to them as to reishit hagez. While the Talmud only mentions that Rabbi Ilai's ruling was accepted in practice (נהוג עלמא) in regard to reishit hagez,Chullin 136b Rashi notes that not only does Rabbi Ilai's logic allow the same leniency for priestly gifts, but the leniency was observed to be commonly practiced (חזינא מה דנהוג) in Rashi's surroundings regarding priestly gifts as well.

The problem with this sequence is in beat two: the grounded hind and foreleg are not diagonal pairs, but are on the same side of the horse (in this case, the outside). This means that the horse is balancing on only one side of its body, which is very difficult for the horse, making it hard to keep the animal balanced, rhythmical, and keeping impulsion. A horse that is cross-firing cannot perform to the best of its ability, and can even be dangerous (such as an unbalanced, cross-firing horse who must jump a huge, solid cross-country obstacle). Additionally, it makes for a very uncomfortable, awkward ride, producing a rolling movement often described as riding an eggbeater, which makes it difficult for the rider to perform to the best of his or her abilities.

On 4 May Winifreda started the 11/2 third choice in the betting in a ten-runner field for the 87th running of the 1000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile at Newmarket Racecourse. Ridden by Sam Loates she settled behind the leaders in the centre of the wide course before moving into the lead inside the last quarter mile. She won in "commanding" fashion by three-quarters of a length from Inuisitive, with two lengths back to the favourite Vain Duchess in third and La Roche in fourth. In the Epsom Oaks on 1 June, Winifreda started 3/1 joint-favourite alongside Lady Schomberg but looked deeply unimpressive before the start, with one correspondent stating that she had lost a great deal of weight since the Guineas and was exhibiting "signs of wear" to her right foreleg.

Skeletal restoration Daeodon shoshonensis is the largest-known entelodont; known adult individuals had skulls about long and were about tall at the shoulders. It's differentiated from other entelodonts by a suite of unique dental characters, the shape and relatively small size of the cheekbone flanges of its skull compared to those of Archaeotherium, the small size of its chin tubercle, as well as features of its carpus and tarsus and the fusion of the bones of the lower leg. Like other entelodonts, its limbs were long and slender with the bones of the foreleg fused together and with only two toes on each foot. It also had a relatively lightly constructed neck for the size of its head, whose weight was mostly supported by muscles and tendons attached to the tall spines of the thoracic vertebrae, similar to those of modern-day bison and white rhinoceros.

Problems with the tendons in his right foreleg meant that Celestial Storm did not appear as a four-year-old until the July meeting at Newmarket where he started the 13/8 favourite for the Princess of Wales's stakes over one and a half miles. He started at odds of 5/1 in a field of eight which included the Derby winner Reference Point, the Irish Derby winner Sir Harry Lewis, the German champion Acatenango, the Italian champion Tony Bin, and the Oaks winner Unite as well as Triptych and Moon Madness.

A depiction of an adze was also used as a hieroglyph, representing the consonants stp, "chosen", and used as: ...Pharaoh XX, chosen of God/Goddess YY... The ahnetjer (Manuel de Codage transliteration: aH-nTr) depicted as an adze-like instrument, was used in the Opening of the Mouth ceremony, intended to convey power over their senses to statues and mummies. It was apparently the foreleg of a freshly sacrificed bull or cow with which the mouth was touched. As Iron Age technology moved south into Africa with migrating ancient Egyptians, they carried their technology with them, including adzes. To this day, iron adzes are used all over rural Africa for various purposes - from digging pit latrines, and chopping firewood, to tilling crop fields - whether they are of maize (corn), coffee, tea, pyrethrum, beans, Millett, yams or a plethora of other cash and subsistence crops.

On her four-year-old debut Mikki Queen started favourite for the Grade 2 Hanshin Himba Stakes over 1600 metres in April but failed by a neck to catch the front-running six-year-old mare Smart Layer. In the Grade 1 Victoria Mile at Tokyo in the following month she again started favourite but despite making rapid progress from the rear of the field in the straight she was beaten two and a half lengths into second by Straight Girl with Shonan Pandora and Smart Layer in third and fourth. Mikki Queen's return in autumn was delayed by an injury to her left foreleg and she was off the track for almost six months before contesting the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Kyoto in November when she finished well to take third behind Queens Ring and Sing With Joy. On 25 December she ended her campaign by running fifth to Satono Diamond in the Arima Kinen.

Homology of the hand to forelimbs (1870) The work by which Gegenbaur is best known is his Grundriss der vergleichenden Anatomie (Leipzig, 1874; 2nd edition, 1878), translated into English by Francis Jeffrey Bell (as Elements of Comparative Anatomy, 1878), with additions by E. Ray Lankester. While recognizing the importance of comparative embryology in the study of descent, Gegenbaur laid stress on the higher value of comparative anatomy as the basis of the study of homologies, i.e. of the relations between corresponding parts in different animals, as, for example, the arm of man, with the foreleg of a horse, and with the wing of a fowl. A distinctive piece of work was effected by him in 1871 in supplementing the evidence adduced by Huxley in refutation of the skull- vertebrae theory: the theory of the origin of the skull from expanded vertebrae, which, formulated independently by Goethe and Oken, had been championed by Owen.

There is also a legend that St Eloi resolved the problem of a horse reluctant to be shod. He thought it was possessed by demons, so he cut off the horse's foreleg and, while the horse stood on the remaining three legs and watched, he re-shod the hoof on the amputated leg, before miraculously re- attaching the leg to the horse. The legend is depicted in a pre-Reformation carving in the Wincanton Parish Church, Slapton Church Northamptonshire, England, a tapestry in the Hospices de Beaune (Hotel Dieu) in Beaune, France, as a fresco on the wall of Aarhus Cathedral, Denmark, as well as in a 14th- century painting attributed to Niccolo di Pietro Gerini in the Petit Palais in Avignon, France. The painting was confiscated from an Austrian collector by the Germans during WWII, and was restituted to the heirs of the original owners in March 2013 by the French Ministry of Culture.

Morphological and DNA sequence data indicate that they are a very ancient lineage of geometer moths; they might even be distinct enough to warrant elevation to full family status in the superfamily Geometroidea. They share numerous plesiomorphic traits - for example at least one areola in the forewing, a hammer-shaped ansa of the tympanal organ and the lack of a gnathos - with the Sterrhinae which are either somewhat less distant from other geometer moths or are part of the same distinct lineage; the Lythriini were until recently placed in the Larentiinae but are apparently Sterrhinae.Õunap et al. (2008), Young (2008) But the Larentiinae characteristically tend to have much longer foreleg tarsi and hindleg tibiae than their relatives, and also have hairy or toothed extensions on the upperside sections of the transtilla; their caterpillars often have the abdominal prolegs reduced already (as is typical for the more advanced geometer moths), and the Larentiinae's tympanal organs have a unique and characteristic structure.

It was granted by a Royal Warrant of Queen Elizabeth II on 20 October 1980. In March he was switched to turf and moved up in class for the Grade II Fuji TV Spring Stakes and finished fifth behind Flying Apple before competing on dirt for the last time and finishing second over 1800 metres at Nakyama. After being beaten in two races on turf at Tokyo he was moved back into Grade III class for the Radio Nikkei Sho at Fukushima Racecourse on 1 July and produced his best effort to date as he finished second of the sixteen runners behind the New Zealand-bred Roc de Cambes. In his two remaining races of 2007 he ran unplaced in the Grade III Niigata Kinen and finished third to Roc de Cambes in the Grade II St Lite Kinen over 2200 metres at Nakayama on 16 September. His performances had earned him a place in the Kikuka Sho in October but his season was ended by a fracture to his left foreleg.

This was due to finding that some remains had fragments altered, missing, or separated from their original skeletons. These remains also had traces of paint and cut marks on them, seen especially with cattle skulls and feet. Based on this, the natural environment of the Dayr al-Barsha tombs, and the fact that only some parts of these animals were found, the possibility of natural deposition can be ruled out, and the cause of these remains in fact are most likely caused by animal sacrifices, as only the head, foreleg, and feet were apparently selected for deposition within the tombs. According to a study by Christopher Eyre, cattle meat was actually not a part of the daily diet in Ancient Egypt, as the consumption of meat only took place during celebrations including funerary and mortuary rituals, and the practice of providing the deceased with offerings of cattle going back to the Predynastic Period.

Forewing: Greyish ochreous, five white lines in the basal area, a short and broad costal from one-quarter to the transverse fascia, a subcostal from base to one-quarter, slightly bending from costa, a medial above fold, from one-fifth to two-fifths, a subdorsal from one-quarter almost to the transverse fascia, a narrow dorsal from base to one- third. There is, however, some variation in the length of the white lines in the basal area, a broad pale yellow transverse fascia beyond the middle, narrowed towards dorsum and with an apical protrusion, bordered at the inner edge by two pale, greyish, golden, metallic, tubercular subcostal and subdorsal spots.
