If trench foot is treated properly, complete recovery is normal, though it is marked by severe short- term pain when feeling returns. Høeg Hagen, together with expedition leader Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen and the Greenlander Jørgen Brønlund, was part of the team of dogsleds that aimed to explore the Independence Fjord area from the east. Misled by existing maps, the three men prolonged their journey to such an extent that a return to the ship at Danmarkshavn that spring was impossible. The three of them were forced to spend the summer in the desolate area without the necessary footgear for hunting in the stony ground. The need for food for men and dogs forced them to reduce their three dogteams to one.

Other groups expect reenactors to stay fully in-character throughout an event, and refrain from commenting on non-period items. To adequately explain activities to an audience, many such groups designate one or two people as "interpreters" who can step out of character to discuss things from a modern perspective. Other ways to circumvent the need for authentic equipment include "hiding" plastic bottles (usually by wrapping them in cloths or furs), using "bindings" (long straps of cloth or fur) to make inauthentic footgear look more adequate, or simply hiding coolboxes inside wooden chests. For safety and comfort, authenticity is usually restricted to designated public areas, thus allowing for the use of portable toilets and inauthentic tenting by reenactors outside these areas.

In 2005, the Giants unveiled road uniforms that are close replicas of the ones worn by the 1956 Giants Championship team, save for small details such as the helmet's metallic look, the addition of belts and different block number locations. A subtle alteration in 2005 affected both the home and away uniforms: the GIANTS script logo below the neck of the jersey was replaced with the lowercase "ny" logo (white on the home and home alternate jersey and red one for away). As previously noted, this ended a 29-year run of the GIANTS script logo appearing on the team's uniforms in some capacity. 2005 also marked the switch from white to black cleats (a change not reflected in the official uniform templates pictured above), ending 30 seasons of white footgear for the team.

Mullooly served in the East Cape War, and was a guard on the Chatham Islands when Te Kooti and his group escaped. In 1873 he opened the Sea View Hotel at Tolaga Bay, providing his guests with simple, adequate accommodation. One morning a guest complained that his boots were not cleaned, although he left them outside his bedroom door. Mullooly could hardly believe that anyone would have taken the risk of losing his footgear. “You are very lucky,” he told him, “that you found them there in the morning!” What he had in mind was that some of his patrons were noted for their light-fingered habits. Mullooly was described as “a little man who revelled in litigation, but was apt to grasp at the shadow and lose the substance.” His guests could depend on being regaled with his version of his latest battle in the courts.
