Its social behaviour is probably similar to other batises in that it is not normally seen in groups larger than pairs or family groups, although the males may gather in single sex aggregations known as "parliaments" immediately prior to the breeding season, when they fly about excitedly, snapping their bills, fripping their wings and making "wik" calls. The male has a zigzag courtship display flight which he performs along with wing fripping, tail fanning and fluffing up the long, white spotted rump feathers while giving strident "week-week-week" calls. The females joins in the calls with her own excited "wik-wik" call.

Usual when approached, the owl will freezes with its body stiffly upright, eyes closed to narrow slits and ear tufts erect. This is called the “tall-thin position” and is common to at least a couple dozen species of typical owl. If approached closed, the owls will alternately open and close their eyes (apparently having stirred but trying to fool potential predators into thinking the owl is still at rest), finally lowering ear tufts, fluffing body plumage and flying to another roost. Unlike most owls, which show a tendency towards territorial behavior on a fixed range year-around when possible, long-eared owls in the non-breeding season are often prone to occur in aggregations of owls while roosting. Such grouping may not uncommonly include up to 6 to 50 owls at times, with a European record of about 150 owls at a single roost.

Though it was at one time commonplace for networks to create mascots for sports coverage to incorporate an educational and entertaining element into their coverage, which was the case with Peter Puck, Digger was created purely to add entertainment to the broadcast and reach out to a younger audience. Some NASCAR fans accused Fox of dumbing down and fluffing its coverage in order to gain revenue from Digger merchandise sales. Despite continuous outrage from the NASCAR fan community, as well as talk from the NASCAR community that the Fan Council was not pleased with the situation, Fox did not announce any plans to drop the usage of the characters, and even had posted pictures of holiday-themed versions of the Digger die-cast in 2009 and 2010. In response to the comments, in 2010, the Digger cartoon was not shown during pre-race shows and Digger appeared less often at the bottom of the screen.

Dryden wrote a book, Fluffing The Concrete: Making The Most Of Foreign Prison-or Anything Else, accounting his time in the muslim-based North African country of Morocco, his arrest there and his time in the prison. When he returned to Mississippi after his time in Europe, he was hired as a general assignment reporter for the South Mississippi Sun, a new daily newspaper serving Biloxi/Gulfport, Mississippi, which eventually merged with The Daily Herald to become The Sun Herald. In his nearly three years there, he won two Mississippi/Louisiana Associated Press writing awards, one for Spot News and one for Investigative Reporting about school board members leasing school lands for pennies. When journalism failed to satisfy his creative urges, he moved to Key West, Florida and eked out a living as a freelancer, drawing advertising cartoons, writing stories for a local magazine, and contributing most of the art and copy for the first comprehensive guide to the island, a book titled Key West: The Last Resort.
