"Granolas are great for people who need quick energy and a portable source of nutrition and calories," says Kim Larson, RDN, spokesperson for The Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.
"When it comes to nutrient composition, whole-wheat bread wins the day," said Angel C. Planells, a registered dietitian and spokesman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) is the largest group of dietitians in the US—and they just happened to have had a hell of a week.
"If you are creative, and you know something about nutrition science and dietetics, you can go 230 days without eating any of the [not-approved foods]," Debiasse says.

"Even though it's called the Mediterranean diet, it's not really a diet," said Atlanta registered dietitian Rahaf Al Bochi, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"Participants reported feeling more satisfied and resisted more decadent foods," said Angel Planells, a Seattle-based registered dietitian and national media spokesman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
One was published in 2004 in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association (now the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics), and another in Appetite in 2006.
She's on to something: 92% of restaurant meals have too many calories, according to a 2016 study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
This indicates that a large majority of high school seniors probably are not meeting the recommendation either, the authors note in Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

"Carbs are the primary fuel for muscle contraction," explains Kelly Pritchett, an associate professor of nutrition and exercise science at Central Washington University and a certified specialist in sports dietetics.

She led a 6933 study, published in the Journal of the Academy of the Nutrition and Dietetics, that found shorter lunch periods to be linked with less healthy eating among children.
You can absolutely gain weight on any diet if you're consuming 23,000 calories a day, according to Dr. Linsenmeyer, who is also director of Saint Louis University's Didactic Program in Dietetics.

"Excess sugar can lead to discomfort, bloating, and gas in your digestive tract," says Torey Armul, MS, RDN, LD, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"Soups can be a healthy addition to any diet, but that doesn't mean you should necessarily eat them for every meal," says Kim Larson, RDN, spokesperson for The Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.
"You can have a kids' burger and fries for less than half the calories and fat," said Angel C Planells, a registered dietitian and spokesman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"If you are eating two to three servings, can you add one or two more per day?" asked Caroline Passerrello, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Even if you're stuck at home, you don't have to live on soup and rice, according to Caroline West Passerrello, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"Chicken soup can offer a nutrient-dense food option when someone is struggling with a poor appetite," said Kristen Smith, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans will be revised in 2020 to include recommendations for children under age 2, Herrick and colleagues note in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
For example, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends eating meals that are balanced, meaning they contain multiple food groups, such as whole grains, lean protein, fruits and vegetables, dairy and fat.
"I do not advise parents to put their children on a Paleo diet," Angela Lemond, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and registered dietitian nutritionist wrote in Food and Nutrition.
We talked to registered dietitians Cynthia Sass, a board-certified sports and performance nutritionist based in New York and Los Angeles, and Vandana Sheth, a spokesperson for the Academy Of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services should strongly consider clinical quality measures, such as those proposed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, that would aid in the early detection and prevention of malnutrition.

"Tap water has a pH of roughly around 7, and alkaline water is closer to about 8 or 9," said Malina Malkani, a registered dietician nutritionist and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"A sustainable eating plan that is balanced and is not restrictive is easier to adhere to in the long run," agreed Kelly Pritchett, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
When we talked to Kim Larson, RDN and spokesperson for The Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics, earlier this year, she told us that dark meat also tends to get a bad reputation because of its fat content.
The research does make sense and supports what other studies have found, said Cynthia Sass, a registered dietitian and board-certified specialist in sports dietetics who regularly counsels clients and athletes on weight loss and nutrition.

Though non-dairy beverages are often substituted for cow's milk, "they are not able to completely mimic the nutritional profile," according to Vandana Sheth, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
That's important to measure because, even if flavanols do confer benefits, they often come packaged with extra calories, sugar, and fats, says Philadelphia-based dietitian Libby Mills, national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

In a recent survey, however, some daycare workers mistakenly believed a clean plate club approach would encourage kids to develop a healthy appetite, researchers report in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, September 17.
"It's going to cost a heck of a lot less to send people [to Mars] on a ketogenic diet," Phinney said at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' annual Food and Nutrition Conference on Sunday in Philadelphia.

"Anytime you're restricting a whole food group or number of food groups, it's a red flag for a possible disordered eating mentality," said Vandana Sheth, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"Just because we can make lower-alcohol wine that's also lower in calories doesn't mean that people should drink more of it," said Ginger Hultin, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"It is an overall healthy way of eating and can help women improve their intake of key nutrients for conception and pregnancy," said Vandana Sheth, registered dietitian nutritionist and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Some people drink bone broth after workouts as a protein supplement or to replace their electrolytes, says Mascha Davis, MPH, RDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Los Angeles and spokesperson for the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"Eggs are one of the few foods that are a complete protein, meaning they contain all nine essential amino acids that your body can't make itself," says Joy Dubost, RD, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"So many people associate different foods and cultural traditions surrounding food with holidays, and also with feelings, and with love and with memories," said Malina Malkani, registered dietician nutritionist and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"If you try to make chicken soup with no salt, you will notice the difference," said Sonya Angelone, a registered dietitian who specializes in cardiovascular nutrition and is the media spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"Your body responds with an increase in your blood glucose level with an increase of insulin," says Leah Caruso, a registered dietitian and professor at the University of Buffalo who's been studying dietetics for the past 20 years.
Alkaline water is often is a wasteGinger Hultin, a Seattle-based registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, named alkaline water as the one product people buy for health that just isn't worth it.
These mini-carrots are slightly less nutritious than regular table carrots, containing about 20 percent less vitamin A and half the vitamin C of regular carrots, said Vandana Sheth, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"Soup can be a healthy and delicious way to create balance after a season of heavy meals or even a particularly indulgent weekend," said Robin Foroutan, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"Tap water has a pH of roughly around 7, and alkaline water is closer to about 8 or 9," Malina Malkani, a registered dietician nutritionist and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, told CNN in January.
According to the research conducted at Clemson University and published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, people who wore a bite counter on their wrist ate less during a meal than those who did not.

"The body only digests and absorbs a certain amount of protein at every meal," about 153 to 40 grams, said Jim White, a registered dietitian and exercise physiologist who spoke on behalf of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
For Marzluff, who has experienced "body confidence stuff and icky stuff around food" her whole life and has training in both dietetics and health coaching, it's part of a larger goal to help people not feel bad about food.
When it comes to health, your generation manages to be ahead of the game by tapping into manual and holistic forms of healing (such as acupuncture, massage, and dietetics) that rely on calculated manipulations, sensitivity, and attention to detail.
Interestingly, one 2012 study in the Journal of the Academy of Dietetics, of overweight soldiers found that soldiers who took Orlistat for six months lost more fat mass but not as much lean mass compared to the placebo group.
Tom Sanders, a professor of nutrition as dietetics at King's College London dismissed their research as "absurd," and said that while that carton of Chubby Hubby could be habit-forming, it won't be as addictive like cocaine or opioids.
"Some people may lose their appetite [when they're feeling sick] due to diminished sense of taste or smell or lack of energy," says Toby Smithson, MS, RDN, LDN, CDE, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and Founder of DiabetesEveryDay.com.
"Research has found that chicken soup helps to prevent inflammatory white cells from moving to other parts of your body, which can decrease your cold symptoms," says Alissa Rumsey, MS, RD, and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Hyperlinks provided an easier way to direct readers to additional resources while references, including blogger bios, improved the users' feeling that the blogger is a credible source, according to the results in Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"Eating more produce is priority number one, especially for women who are pregnant or trying to conceive, regardless of whether it's organic or not," says Torey Armul, MS, RD, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"I don't see any health benefits of a diet focused primarily on red meat," said Kristen Smith, a registered dietitian nutritionist with the Academy of Nutritionists and Dietetics, who said she's seen the carnivore diet's popularity grow on social media.
The body is in a more acidic state when it's in ketosis, lead researcher Edward Weiss, PhD, associate professor of nutrition and dietetics at Saint Louis University, previously told Health, which may limit its ability to perform at peak levels.
We asked Angela Lemond, RDN, CSP, LD, a nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to break down the ingredients in Gwyn's morning shake and see if it was worth all of the requisite time and money.
Insider asked nine dietitians who attended the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' annual Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo to name a product people buy in an effort to improve their health that just isn't worth it, and three themes emerged.
"Among the children included in the current study, snacking was found to contribute positively to overall diet quality," lead study author Katie Loth of the University of Minnesota and colleagues write in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, gluten-free alternatives to traditional foods accounted for nearly $1.6 billion in sales in 2015, with most of the growth driven by consumers for whom being gluten-free is not medically necessary.
"Up to 85% of individuals who have celiac disease don't know it because they write their symptoms off or change their diets without being tested," said Julie Stefanski, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Gary Frost, a professor of nutrition and dietetics at Imperial College London, who was not involved in the research, told CNN it is incredibly rare for someone in the UK to have a diet so limited it results in micronutrient deficiencies.
"Even 100% fruit juice offers no nutritional benefits over whole fruit," said a consensus statement published in September by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the American Heart Association joined the and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
The thing is, bottled kombucha that you'll find in stores has to comply with government requirements for non-alcoholic beverages, says Mascha Davis, MPH, RDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Los Angeles and spokesperson for the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Any journalist knows that if you want some information from, say, the American Cancer Institute, American Heart Association, or American Dietetics Association, as Anderson does, you call the media relations department and ask to be put in touch with the appropriate expert.
"The foods in the Mediterranean diet are really high in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber, which are all key components for reducing the risk for chronic disease," said Al Bochi, who is also a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Though some people, including food bloggers, may use the terms "plant-based" and "vegan" interchangeably, plant-based is an "umbrella term" and does not equate to being vegan, added Kimberlain, who is also a national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The new guidelines were praised by Heather Mangieri, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, who saw them as a step forward in urging Americans to consider "eating patterns" rather than specific nutrients as good or bad.
"The more soda you drink, the bigger the 'reward,' and as would happen with most pleasurable things, we develop an affinity and want even more of them," said Cordialis Msora-Kasago, a registered dietitian nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Potential unintended consequences According to Sara Haas, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, "it is a nice idea in theory because some people have said it made them feel motivated when making choices" to know how much they would have to exercise.
Activated charcoal is a popular health ingredient these days, even though "there is absolutely no health benefit to consuming activated charcoal in green juices or in any other food," Kim Larson, RDN and spokesperson for The Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics told Refinery29 in 2017.
A new study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics surveyed 3,193 entrees at 34 fast-food and 28 fast-casual restaurants and found that fast-casual entrees, on the whole, contain way more calories than those at fast-food restaurants.
The other important finding is that school meal participation did not change, especially among high school students who can leave campus during lunch and buy other food, said Johnson, who is also a registered dietitian and member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

"I think it is important that people understand, anytime you alter the food from its natural state, that is actually considered 'processed,' " said Kristi L. King, a senior registered dietitian at Texas Children's Hospital and a national spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
That's a too-low count for virtually all people, even if they are trying to lose weight: the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends 1,600 to 500,400 calories a day for women and 2,000 to 3,000 per day for men, depending on their activity level.
Angela Lemond, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), thinks CICO has probably gotten a publicity boost as a counterbalance to the low-carb craze, since it proves you can lose weight without severely cutting back on carbs.
"[Dietitians] have the knowledge and skills to work with patients [or] clients on an individual basis to develop interventions that work," said Dr. Emily Wilcox Gier, dietetics program leader for the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University, who wasn't part of the study.
If you find that you constantly use food as a crutch, going to therapy can be helpful, and help you understand where that instinct is coming from, says Angel Planells, MS, RDN, a Seattle-based registered dietitian nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
From a nutrient perspective, golden berries are a great source of vitamins and fiber, which can help your immune system and overall health, says says Mascha Davis, MPH, RDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Los Angeles and former spokesperson for the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Whey protein is the liquid portion of milk, which is separated out in the process of making cheese, dried, and sold in powder form, says Melissa Majumdar, MS, RD, LDN, CPT, a registered dietitian and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Spokesperson who specializes in sports nutrition.
Many people worry about the amount of sugar in watermelon, but "that's a bit of a misconception, because the sugar content is actually lower than some other fruits, gram for gram," said Jennifer McDaniel, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
As Tuft University researchers found, in the "Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, " restaurant dishes at non-chain establishments across the country typically contained 1,200 calories — about half of the 13,000 or 2,500 calories recommended for moderately active women and men in an entire day.
"Juicing celery (and any other vegetable) strips away the beneficial fiber that helps you feel fuller longer, improves intestinal health and feeds the health bacteria in your gut," Malina Malkani, registered dietitian nutritionist and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, wrote in an email.
"There are no specific supplements that will help protect against coronavirus and anyone claiming that is being investigated by the FTC [Federal Trade Commission] and the FDA [Food and Drug Administration]," said Melissa Majumdar, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
As Tuft University researchers found, in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, restaurant dishes at non-chain establishments across the country typically contained 21,2070 calories — about half of the 2,000 or 2,500 calories recommended for moderately active women and men in an entire day.
The pushback against the federal regulations largely came from those who wanted local control, said Donna S. Martin, president of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and director of the school nutrition program for Burke County Public Schools in Waynesboro, Ga. "People want less regulation," she said.
For athletes contemplating a vegan lifestyle, it's important to work with a registered dietitian (one who is certified as a specialist in sports dietetics, aka "CSSD," is ideal), who can collaboratively develop a meal plan that is vegan and supports overall health and athletic performance, Dr. Halliday says.
Pizza, sandwiches, soft drinks, cookies, brownies, donuts, and pastries are among the most common free food items workplaces offer, according to a research brief published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which analyzed self-reported data from 5,222 working adults from 2012 and 2013.
It's also unclear if this classroom experiment could be replicated with family meals at home or lead to lasting, long-term changes in children's eating habits, said Vandana Sheth, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and a dietician and nutritionist in private practice in Los Angeles.
Other ingredients -- including mixers, tonic water, juice, soda, syrups, cream and coconut -- all pack sugar and fat calories on top of alcohol and should be consumed with caution, explained Ginger Hultin, a registered dietitian, spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and author of the blog ChampagneNutrition.
More than 70 health organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American Heart Association, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and chairs from leading universities, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Johns Hopkins agree: They sent a letter to the USDA in 2013 requesting support for SNAP pilot programs.
Ginger Hultin, a Seattle-based registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, likely selected red wine because she enjoys it, but any drink in moderation is linked to health benefits including a longer life, a lower risk of heart disease, and better mental health.  
"One of the major benefits of drinking green juice is that people who don't like many green vegetables (or veggies in general) can actually get some of their vitamins and minerals through juicing," explains Kim Larson, RDN and spokesperson for The Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics, in an email to R29.
Researchers tested a program developed to focus on psychology and nutrition in helping athletes with their body image - as an athlete and in society – as well as understanding the role of food as fuel for their body, the study team writes in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Maybe. "If you look at the peer-reviewed evidence, we cannot say sugar absolutely makes kids hyper; however, you can't discount that sugar may have a slight effect" on behavior, said Kristi L. King, senior pediatric dietitian at Texas Children's Hospital and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"Training smarter and more consistently and eating a healthful diet would give most people far more improvement in exercise performance than taking baking soda," says Ted Weiss, PhD, professor in the department of nutrition and dietetics at Saint Louis University, who has studied baking soda's effects on muscles and performance.
In contrast, merely sitting with children at meal times, or encouraging picky eaters to try a food, "were not associated with desirable outcomes, such as children tasting nutrient-dense foods more frequently and unhealthy foods less frequently," the researchers reported in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

For many consumers, there's a perception that healthy food is boring and plain, and exciting labels might get some people to try things they might not otherwise eat, said Vandana Sheth, a private practice dietician and nutritionist in Los Angeles and a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
The 5:2 diet, in particular, is backed by "promising" studies that show that it lowers weight and improves blood sugar, inflammation and other aspects of metabolic health, said Joy Dubost, a registered dietitian and a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the country's largest organization of dietitians.
Extreme example Tom Sanders, a professor of nutrition and dietetics at King's College London, was critical of the case report, saying it relied on the patient's own recall of his eating habits and did not take into account other possible explanations for the condition, including genetic defects or environmental exposures.
Wiss and his coauthors Maria Schellenberger, of the University of Southern California at Los Angeles, and Michael Prelip, of the University of California, Los Angeles, point out that in 1990, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics published a position paper supporting the need for nutrition intervention in treatment and recovery from addiction.
From a nutritional point of view, maca is rich in vitamin C, iron, copper, and manganese, an essential nutrient that helps with the formation of bone and amino acid metabolism, says Mascha Davis, MPH, RDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Los Angeles and spokesperson for the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"Moms will continue to be creative with how they use nut spreads, so consumers need to remember to look at the serving size and determine how much of a particular food meets their nutritional needs and those of their families," said registered dietitian nutritionist Caroline Passerrello of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
As far as the nutritional benefits go, bee pollen seems to contain some vitamins (like B vitamins and folic acid), and macronutrients like protein and fat, but in very small quantities, says Mascha Davis, MPH, RDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Los Angeles and spokesperson for the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
The Canadian study team found that sodium-reduced packaged chicken and meat slices in supermarkets contained an average of 44 percent more potassium than their regular counterparts, largely because of potassium-containing additives in the low-sodium products, according to the report in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
A. Mushrooms may lack the deep green or brilliant red hues consumers have come to associate with nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables, but they are a "powerhouse of nutrition" and not a white food to be avoided, said Angela Lemond, a registered dietitian nutritionist and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"You do lose fiber in fruit and vegetable juices, and that results in juices having the ability to spike your blood sugar in a more dramatic way than if you ate the actual fruit or vegetable," said Robin Foroutan, an integrative medicine dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

"Coupled with the fact that nutrition is not required content in medical school curricula, medical professionals may not have the time or the skills to develop and implement nutrition interventions for patients," said Dr. Emily Wilcox Gier, Dietetics Program Leader for the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University, who wasn't part of the study.
"The only concern I might have is if people are tempted to eat these like candy and end up overdosing on vitamins," especially "those that are fat soluble," which can cause a range of problems if ingested over long periods, said Kim Larson, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
And in a recent keto explainer in the New York Times, Whitney Linsenmeyer, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, chalked the diet's popularity up to America being in "a state of carbophobia;" additional experts warned against the long-term effects (like increased risk of cardiovascular disease) keto might have on the body.
"It is already well known that within this cohort there were marked differences in health according to their social position, with the higher grades of civil servants having better health and the lowest grades having the worst health," Tom Sanders, professor emeritus of nutrition and dietetics at King's College London, said in an emailed statement.
Hopeful that a more advanced degree would help her make more money and better manage her debt, Butler-McDow went on to pursue a bachelor's degree in culinary nutrition, concentrating on clinical dietetics at Johnson and Wales University (JWU) in Providence, RI. By the time she had finished her second degree, Butler-McDow was even deeper in debt.
Endurance athletes and bodybuilders use this approach to boost performance or achieve a desired physique before a competition, Torey Armul, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics tells CNBC Make It. Fitness influencers also use this tactic to lose weight, and share photos of recipes and meal plans on Instagram and Pinterest.
"The foods in the Mediterranean diet are really high in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber, which are all key components for reducing the risk for chronic disease," Atlanta registered dietitian Rahaf Al Bochi, who teaches the Mediterranean diet to her clients and is also a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, said in January.
In its position paper on vegetarian diets, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the nation's largest organization of dietitians, said a plant-based diet is healthful and nutritionally adequate for pregnant women, as long as there's appropriate planning, since pregnant women who don't eat meat may be at risk for deficiencies in certain nutrients, especially iron and vitamin B12.
"You can use a microwave steaming tray with water in the bottom, or simply add your vegetables and a small amount of water to a microwave-safe bowl and cover with microwave-safe plastic wrap, leaving one corner open to allow air to escape," said Whitney Linsenmeyer, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Even though prenatal vitamins are widely recommended to pregnant women to help meet the nutrient needs for mothers and babies, women may struggle to choose the right supplement because labeling is inconsistent and the amount of the active ingredients varies widely from one product to the next, researchers note in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"This study tells us much of what we already knew: Electrolytes -- like sodium and potassium -- contribute to better hydration, while calories in beverages result in slower gastric emptying and therefore slower release of urination," said Melissa Majumdar, a registered dietitian, personal trainer and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics who was not involved in the study.
It's also wise to meet regularly with a registered dietitian who can monitor your eating patterns, because it's easy to overdo it on non-fasting days, especially when you are not in a controlled setting like the study participants were in, explained Angela Lemond, a registered dietitian and national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
The type of unsaturated fat matters There could be several reasons why the unsaturated fat diet in the study might not really be responsible for the increased risk of death, including the cholesterol paradox, according to Sonya Angelone, owner of a nutrition consulting firm in the San Francisco Bay Area and a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Though lacking credentials in dietetics, Ms. Fredericks was aided by two experts, Mercedes Sanchez, a food-loving dietitian who grew up in Spain and who specializes in one-pot cooking, and Antonia Demas, founder of the Food Studies Institute and creator of the "Food Is Elementary" curriculum that teaches children about organic gardening, environmental issues, plant-based nutrition and healthy cooking.
Experts from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Heart Association worked together to develop the recommendations, which endorse breast milk or formula for infants and primarily water and dairy milk, which has many nutrients essential for young developing bodies and brains, for children ages one to five.
