In Dead Beat, former Denarian Quintus Cassius is killed by Mouse and hits Harry with his death curse in which he screamed, "DIE ALONE". This caused Harry great concern throughout the novels up through Changes. He speculates that it is possible that it means that he will not only have an unsuccessful love life, but that all of his friends will either be dead or absent when his time to die arrives. Species: Fae (Wild Fae) Description: Ruler of the Wild Fae The Erlking is a king of the Wild Fae who first appeared in Dead Beat. Like his Germanic counterpart, he is the leader of the Wild Hunt, a ritualistic hunt in which spectral huntsmen on horseback, accompanied by hounds roam in a certain area, hunting for members or prey. In Changes, he is revealed to have a court of his own, consisting of goblin warriors and advisors. The Erlking generally appears to be a 9 foot tall man in plate armour, wearing a closed helm topped with deer antlers.

His face is described as asymmetrical and wild, but possessing a certain striking nobility. In Dead Beat, he is the subject of a ritual used to instigate a Wild Hunt. A book describing the summoning is sought after by a number of necromancers, intent upon using it along with a necromantic ritual to gain the power of a minor god. Harry summons the Erlking in an attempt to keep him bound and unavailable to lead the hunt until the time for the ritual has passed, but he is ambushed by one of the necromancers and the Erlking set free.

Harry's 'final' ability possessed by all wizards is that of the death curse. While it is typically targeted at the being that kills them, it may be employed upon anyone within line of sight (such as when Harry was readying to send the Death Curse at one of the Necromancers in Dead Beat when he anticipated Morgan's attack), and the wizard must have time to use it (a few seconds). Mouse grows startlingly large by the start of Dead Beat, with his shoulders reaching nearly to Harry's waist, and kills the former Denarian Quintus Cassius in order to prevent him from killing Harry. In Proven Guilty Mouse was hit by a car and survived, and he went on to take down supernatural enemies while emitting a faint glow. Mouse has shown an aptitude for detecting dark energies and presences, and he has a strong empathy for humans who display no such dark traces.

Journe participated in the Only Watch auction for the first time in 2015, submitting the Tourbillon Souverain Bleu - a tourbillon watch based on the Chronomètre Bleu, including a chrome blue dial and a tantalum case, the latter which is very rare for a tourbillon. As with the standard Tourbillon Souverain, it features an in-house rose gold movement and remontoire d'egalite, as well as dead beat seconds. The Tourbillon Souverain Bleu sold for at auction. For the 2017 edition of Only Watch, F.P. Journe donated a monopusher split-seconds chronograph in 44mm with a blue dial and featuring a completely new movement that would not be used in any other F.P Journe watches.

When the Leanansidhe returned to the Winter Court with a powerful athame, Mab forced her to sell Harry's debt contract to her to keep the balance in the court. In Dead Beat Mab was shown to have the athame, which she now possesses because she locked the Leanansidhe away for a time until she could be shown to have thrown off the corruptive influence the tainted gift had had upon her. As of Proven Guilty, both Lily and Maeve have expressed a concern that she is going insane. In Small Favor she does not speak for herself during most of the book but instead uses the Grimalkin, a huge cat-like creature of the Fae, as her "voice".

In addition to her supernatural powers as a vampire, she is as skilled in the use of magic as a full-fledged wizard and has been a threat to Dresden a few times throughout the novels since her introduction in Grave Peril. Mavra was apparently destroyed by Dresden in Blood Rites, but actually survived—what Harry killed was one of her underlings, which she used as a decoy. More recently in Dead Beat, she acquired the Word of Kemmler, receiving it from Harry as payment for blackmail photos of Karrin Murphy shooting one of Mavra's human servants with a shotgun. What Mavra intends to do with this tome has yet to be revealed.

Seen from outside, Kent was a dead-beat place. It wasn't somewhere you went to work, it wasn't cutting edge....the place was absolutely dire and in many ways it was quite brave of Nick to go there.

In 1970 John Gilmore published The Tucson Murders, through Dial Press, New York, a hardcover nonfiction true crime detailing the life and crimes of Charles Schmid, the "notorious pied piper of Tucson". John Gilmore was sent at first by Playboy magazine to do a story on the trial, but after an introduction to Schmid's wife, he managed to meet Charles Schmid and get the exclusive rights to a book. He was in close contact with him and his family during the whole trial. The 1971 movie The Todd Killings is based on the Schmid case, as was the 1994 film Dead Beat and the 2005 film The Lost, adapted from a novel by Jack Ketchum.

Species: Shadow of the Fallen Angel Lasciel (only exists in Harry's mind) Description: Exists only to tempt those who have touched the coin of Lasciel into taking it up As of Dead Beat, Lash has begun to contact Harry directly in his mind. She appears (at first separately) as the illusionary woman "Shiela" who helps Harry find the book he is looking for in an occult bookstore, and recalls the ritual printed in the book when he needs it. However, she can only appear to Harry - Butters and Bock are unable to perceive her. She claims to be but a shadow of the Fallen in the coin, and seeks to help him more out of self-preservation than a desire to corrupt.

Thomas spends the next few years living with Harry in a cramped basement apartment and attempts to live on only occasional sexual encounters with women he only meets once. (This is complicated by the fact that wizards are at war with vampires; if a vampire is found in Harry's apartment it will cause trouble.) In Dead Beat Thomas is shown as increasingly frustrated, both because he can't hold down a job due to his vampiric powers, and because he feels Harry doesn't sympathize with his hunger. After demonstrating to Harry how it feels, he seems to calm down. But Harry still worries about him, especially in Proven Guilty where Thomas vanishes during the day for months at a time, with no mention of where he's been, and moves out of Harry's apartment.

A year after the events in Proven Guilty, Dresden is called by Murphy to the scene of an apparent suicide, and senses the victim is a magical practitioner. After investigating another victim, Dresden realizes a serial killer of magical practitioners is loose in Chicago. Investigating, he meets with a group of practitioners who've banded together and hired Elaine, Harry's former lover, for protection. He finds that his brother, Thomas, had apparently been following most of the women who've vanished, but also comes across another suspect, "Grey Cloak," whom he tracks to Undertown, a warren under Chicago, and spies on him meeting with Cowl—who didn’t die during the Darkhallow (in Dead Beat), also learning that vampires of House Skavis — who feed on despair — are responsible for the suicides.

Despite considering himself a coward, Butters saves Harry's life during the events of Dead Beat; when Butters realizes that Harry's plan requires a drummer, he dons his polka suit and follows Harry into battle against a zombie army raised by necromancers. In spite of his fear, he retains enough presence of mind during the battle to successfully raise a magical circle around himself for protection so he can keep his drumbeat going. He then uses his medical skills to save Captain Luccio of the Wardens from what would have been a fatal wound, and to patch up Morgan from less serious injuries. He also discovers that the unnaturally long lifespan of wizards is due to an uncharted regenerative capabilities, and that Harry should one day recover the use of his horribly-burned hand.

Journe has won the Aguille d'Or grand prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie on three occasions: In 2004 for the Tourbillon Souverain à seconde morte, the current-generation Tourbillon Souverain with dead beat seconds; in 2006 for the Sonnerie Souverain, both a Grand Sonnerie and a Petit Sonnerie for which F.P. Journe received 10 patents; and in 2008 for the Centigraphe Souverain, a chronograph with timekeeping isolated from chronograph mechanism, allowing the chronograph to measure hundredths of a second despite a 3 Hz movement. No other manufacture has won the Aguille d'Or more than twice. F.P. Journe has also won four category prizes at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie: the 2002 Special Jury Prize for the Octa Calendrier; the 2003 Men's Watch Prize for the Octa Lune; the 2005 Men's Watch Prize for the Chronomètre Souverain; and the 2010 Complicated Watch Prize for the Chronomètre à Résonance.

Race: Human (Deceased) Description: Wizard/Record Keeper for the White Council Wizard Samuel Peabody was first introduced in Summer Knight as the bookkeeper for the Senior Council. He is also the wizard who compiled the book Das Lied des Erlking, which included the spell needed to call up the Erlking and the Wild Hunt, in Dead Beat. As of Turn Coat, he is shown as a studious record manager, having his personal study at Edinburgh described as a "bastion of order", and having a personal dislike of Harry, who seldom visits Edinburgh (and thus can't be influenced like the other Wardens) and who is also very disorganized, which Peabody appears to take almost as a personal insult. At the end of Turn Coat, it is discovered that he had been subtly altering the minds of the Senior Council and the Wardens to effect change.

She was then revealed to have killed Glenn Donovan (Bob Cryer) and Carl Costello (Paul Opacic) for being "sinners" and "dead beat dads". In January 2019 Breda took revenge on Louis Loveday (Karl Collins) for cheating with three women, Leela, Simone Loveday (Jacqueline Boatswain) and Simone's sister, Martine Deveraux (Kéllé Bryan) pushing some shelving onto him as he called for a taxi to leave town. Breda moved Louis to an old pig farm once owned by her parents making out she was caring for him and took him there to recover, Louis discovered Breda was responsible for the deaths of Carl, Glenn and Russ whilst writing a letter to Simone and attempted to escape but was thwarted when Breda returned to the farm. She puts him back into bed and believes him when he says it's Leela he wants to be with, Breda makes tea and as she strips the bed Louis switches the cups which Breda notices, just then Simone arrives at the farm calling for Breda, before Louis can react Breda smothers him keeping him from shouting to Simone.

Although she can probably use guns at an expert level she seems to prefer using "medieval" weapons, most likely because she's had centuries to hone her abilities, more of an impression when used, more effective for defense as well as offense, more direct and personable, and require skill, discipline and training to use effectively giving more value to her sense of worth, and harder for opponents to use against her. Monoc Securities is based in Norway; the company name is consistent with a reference to Odin ("mon" meaning one, "oc" referring to ocular, Odin having only one eye) in Norse mythology, as is the name of the CEO, Donar Vadderung (surname a possible adaptation of "Father + ing", given name "Odin"). Together with Ms. Gard's reference to both Harry and Marcone as "mortals" during the alley-fight and knowledge of runes in Dead Beat, her appearance, affiliation and combat prowess implied she is one of the Valkyries. This is confirmed in the short story "Heorot", where Ms. Gard acknowledges that she is the Valkyrie Sigrun, though she notes that some of the legends are highly inaccurate.
