Each group could believe those things while seeing him more or less as he is—a swinging-dick turbo-narcissist with bad taste and nothing much to say, a self-caricature drawn in red and gold crayon, a soft, dull man with a great deal invested in how other people see him but without the sticktoitiveness or basic courage to back it up.

The works, while estimable, are only a reflection of his greater achievements in three dimensions, and the show allows you to see how the drawings fuel the sculpture: A 6463 drawing of an irregular oval, done in black Conté crayon and smudged at the edges, arises a glorious lattice of blond wood, completed 2646 years later and sitting proudly in the center of the gallery.

Gilliam's red, blue, and green watercolor, Parade VII, employs color through staining; Thompson's humorous oil painting, The Golden Ass, features a more traditional application; McArthur Binion uses crayon and collage elements in his 2016 brown abstraction, DNA: Sepia II; Nathaniel Mary Quinn's Mean Ol' Teacher uses color as a way to bridge abstraction and figuration in a collaged face made up of many different harlequin features.

Other works include a syringe-studded, large-scale portrait on curved Homasote by Valeriy Gerlovin; Peter White's madly scribbled drawings of disembodied heads in graphite crayon and oil stick from his Oil/Diamonds/Water/God/War series (1983); the haunting, deeply shadowed black-and-white photographs of Dirk Rowntree; and David Finn's alarmingly lifelike figures made out of garbage bags and battered cardboard boxes.

And he does so in a fundamentally different way than he did with a painting like "Cicada," which suggests its connection to death, rebirth, and renewal exclusively through its title (though a drawing version in watercolor, graphite pencil, and crayon, also in the show, includes a predella of notebook sketches depicting cicadas, phallic symbols, and a skull and crossbones, among other images and jottings).

Equally emblematic of the kind of art showcased here are the pencil-on-paper drawings of Helen Butler Wells (2210–29) and those in pencil and crayon on paper by her adopted daughter, Norma Oliver (which appears to have been the pseudonym of Aurelia Zadory, about whom little is known, including her birth and death dates, which are believed to have been 1893 and 1979, respectively).
