A slumlord (or slum landlord) is a slang term for a landlord, generally an absentee landlord with more than one property, who attempts to maximize profit by minimizing spending on property maintenance, often in deteriorating neighborhoods, and to tenants that they can intimidate. Severe housing shortages allow slumlords to charge higher rents, and when they can get away with it, to break rental laws. As many of these neighborhoods are often populated by poor minorities, the term "ghetto landlord" has also been used. A "retail slumlord" is one who keeps a shopping mall in a bad shape until the government buys or confiscates it.

Balzac, p. 183. Referring to a work by Raphaël de Valentin in La Peau de chagrin, Balzac writes: "It was in memory of the disaster that befell Louis' book that, in the tale which comes first in these Etudes [philosophiques], I adopted the title invented by Lambert for a work of fiction...." Shunned by the other students and berated by teachers for not paying attention, the boys bond through discussions of philosophy and mysticism. After completing an essay entitled Traité de la Volonté ("Treatise on the Will"), Lambert is horrified when a teacher confiscates it, calls it "rubbish", and – the narrator speculates – sells it to a local grocer. Soon afterwards, a serious illness forces the narrator to leave the school.

The Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) convinces the Master to stop this plan at the last minute, and the Master subsequently escapes, albeit with his TARDIS, a space-time ship, left non-functioning after the Doctor confiscates the ship's dematerialisation circuit. Having become a main character in the show's eighth season, the Master reappears in The Mind of Evil, where he regains his TARDIS' circuit from the Doctor after attempting to launch a nerve gas missile that would initiate World War III. After another incursion on Earth in The Claws of Axos, and failing to hold the galaxy to ransom using a doomsday weapon on the planet Uxarieus in the year 2472 in Colony in Space, in The Dæmons the Master is finally captured on Earth by the organisation UNIT after Jo Grant (Katy Manning) prevents the alien Azal (Stephen Thorne) from gifting the Master his powers.
Cal Morse, a local County Sheriff whose wife, the security officer, is trapped inside, is advised to retain the help of Dr. Dan Fairchild, a past employee who is a known alcoholic, who created an antidote to the weapon. Fearing someone being shot accidentally, Cal confiscates his .357 magnum revolver when the bullet ricocheted off the steel blast doors. USACT led by Major Connelly arrives, sets up quarantine procedures (including of 3 workers who left early before the "Protocol One" was activated; Bob's girlfriend Dana being one of them). Upon the release of the weapon, the P4 lab workers sanitize the area, destroy lab animals, and inoculate themselves with the antidote.
Chengcai, on the other hand, is more physically active. He’s an adept fighter with dreams of being the next Bruce Lee. Unlike Tom, Chengcai comes from a working class background and lives in a cramped apartment with his widowed ex-convict father (Huang Yi-Liang). His dad may have the right intentions, but he has a pretty horrible parenting style - if Mr. Lim doesn’t like his son’s behaviour, he has no problem beating the hell out of him. Young Ashley Leong serves as the film’s comic relief, particularly in an amusing subplot in which he thinks he impregnated his cute classmate because they kissed and took a nap in close proximity to each other. He also gets the underserved brunt of his parents’ ire towards the end of the film in a scene that pretty much encapsulates the unspoken theme of the film: “Don’t be a dick to your kids.” During a school check for mobile phones, Tom is caught with a pornographic VCD. As his teacher confiscates it, Chengcai makes a cheeky remark that provokes the teacher into slapping him, leading to an exchange that escalates into a massive scuffle.
