Eurasiers originated in Germany in 1960, when the founder, Julius Wipfel, set out together with Charlotte Baldamus and a small group of enthusiasts to create a breed with the best qualities of the Chow Chow and the Wolfspitz. The initial combination of the breeds resulted in what was first called "Wolf-Chow" and then, twelve years later, after crossing with a Samoyed, was renamed "Eurasier" (Eurasian) and recognized by the FCI in 1973. Nobel Laureate Konrad Lorenz obtained a Eurasier puppy from Charlotte Baldamus, Nanette vom Jaegerhof, whom he called "Babett". He thought her character was the best he had ever known in a dog.

Another film shot in 1938 demonstrates the use of a rotatiller and caterpillar tractor on the farmland at Bron-y-de. A 1936 film filmed by Lloyd George's private secretary, A. J. Sylvester, shows Lloyd George in his orchard at Bron- y-de. A 1929 film shows Lloyd George at Bron-y-de reading accompanied by his chow chow dog, 'Y Chow Du' (The Black Chow). Berry Wall (right) in Paris in the 1920s with his chow chow Chi-Chi Whether in Paris, Deauville, Biarritz, or Aix-les-Bains, Wall and his wife were famous members of the European social elite. Their social circle included the Duchess of Windsor, the Grand Duke Dimitri of Russia, the Aga Khan, and ex-king Nicholas of Montenegro (whom Wall called a "magnificent old darling"). They lived in a suite in the Hotel Meurice, with a consecutive string of chow dogs named Chi-Chi or Toi-Toi. This was located conveniently near the bespoke shirtmaker Charvet, where Wall had his signature "spread eagle" collar shirts and cravats custom-made for himself and his dog.

Although their traditional duty was kept, they started to fulfill jobs that were convenient in the circumstances of their owner: they became house dogs. After World War II, the breed became a less popular pet; even now, the breed has not been able to regain the popularity it previously enjoyed. The U.S. Department of Agriculture imported four purebred Pulik in 1935 to Beltsville, Maryland as part of an experiment when trying to help American agriculturists concerned with the problem of herding dogs which sometimes killed the animals to which they had been entrusted to control. The Pulik were bred among themselves and crossed with the German Shepherd, the Chow Chow and perhaps with two Turkish sheepdogs which were quartered there at the time.

He was shown in a single show in his native England, at Chatham Hill where he was defeated by a dog named Centaur. Centaur was imported to the United States around the same time as Albert, being renamed to Dreamwold Centaur. Centaur's string of victories in Britain overshadowed Albert's arrival in the US. When Albert won Best in Show at Westminster, it was seen as a surprise since he was the first non- terrier to take the title, defeating Wire Fox Terrier Vickery Estelle into second place. The other breeds in the final round of judging were an English Foxhound, an American Foxhound, a Manchester Terrier, an Airedale Terrier, a Bedlington Terrier, an Old English Sheepdog, a Doberman Pinscher, a Chow Chow and a Cocker Spaniel.

Typically, animals become infected through nursing from their mother. In the United States the Stafford is commonly classified as a pit bull-type dog along with the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier, in other countries including the United Kingdom the term pit bull is used as an abbreviation for the American Pit Bull Terrier and does not encompass the Stafford. A number of federal and municipal governments have placed restrictions on the ownership of the pit bull-type dogs, including the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Some areas also regulate or restrict other breeds such as Dalmatian, German Shepherd, Chow Chow, American Bulldog, Rottweiler, Mastiff, Doberman Pinscher, and any mix or even a resemblance of those dogs. In the US, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is opposed to breed-specific legislation, referring to it as "breed-discriminatory laws".

Dick Byne graduated from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in 1973, and completed his bachelor's degree in Agriculture at the University of Georgia. He used land he inherited from his family to start Byne Blueberry Farms in 1980. In 2002, he steered Byne Blueberry Farms to the production of over fifteen blueberry specialty products such as blueberry jam, jelly, butter, preserves, chow chow, chutney, syrup, honey, and also blueberry jalapeño jelly. Dick Byne says, “You know organic farming is nothing new.” “That’s how most farms were managed before World War II. We started growing organically because it was what I had learned in school, and it made sense economically, and again, it fit into what we thought would be a trend of people wanting to eat healthier, without chemicals in their food.” He also says it is important to give the soil as much organic matter as possible. “The more organic matter you have, the more the soil holds nutrients, and the more it holds water”.

In 2012, a study looked at 49,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms that gave a genome-wide coverage of 1,375 dogs representing 35 breeds, 19 wolves, and previous published genetic signatures of other breeds, giving a total of 121 breeds covered. The study found a deep genetic split between old-world and new-world wolves, and confirmed the genetic divergence of 13 breeds from a 2010 study (Afghan Hound, Akita, Alaskan Malamute, American Eskimo, Basenji, Canaan dog, Chow Chow, Dingo, New Guinea singing dog, Saluki, Samoyed, Shar-Pei, Siberian Husky), plus another three: the Eurasier, Finnish Spitz and Shiba Inu. The study referred to these 16 as basal breeds, as opposed to ancient breeds, as they exhibited genetic divergence but not all of them were historically considered to be "ancient breeds". The 2012 study found that modern breeds only emerged in the 19th century and that claims of their antiquity are based on little or no historical or empirical evidence.

Lucky and his friend Sweet, a female swift-dog (greyhound), escape from a Trap House (dog pound). When Lucky is trapped by red foxes, he is saved by his long-lost sister Squeak, now called Bella, who leads a group of six other former Leashed Dogs (dogs kept as pets by longpaws) who are sure that their owners will come back for them – these include Bruno the big, sturdy, thick-furred brown male German shepherd-chow chow mix Fight Dog, Martha the massive black water-dog (Newfoundland dog), Alfie the bulldog, Sunshine the Maltese dog, Daisy the wiry, white-and-tan, short-legged female West Highland white terrier-Jack Russell terrier mix and Mickey the Farm Dog (border collie). Lucky decides to join them temporarily and show them how to survive in this new world before going back to being a loner.

There are no records indicating the origins of the Shar Pei, although it closely resembles effigies of an un-wrinkled type of guard dog kept in southern China during the Han dynasty; some believe the modern breed, along with the Chow Chow, descends from these dogs. The breed has been identified as a basal breed that predates the emergence of the modern breeds in the 19th century. The Shar Pei first came to the attention of Western travelers in the 19th century, who called the breed the "Chinese fighting dog"; these dogs were not nearly as wrinkled as the modern breed and it was used by locals for dog fighting. The Shar Pei was once very popular, but the political turmoil in China in the 20th century was to take its toll on the breed and by the 1970s it was close to extinction. In 1973 a Hong Kong businessman named Matgo Law appealed to the international community, in particular the American Kennel Club, to help save the breed; by 1978 the breed was named by The Guinness Book of Records as the world’s rarest breed, with only 60 remaining.
