"Catholic Influence in the Islands", Tahiti 1834-1984 Caret and Laval hoped to expand their work to Tahiti, where they arrived in the Kingdom of Tahiti in February 1836.
There are several ad hoc workarounds used in email or on the internet, where the proper letters are often not supported, as seen also in non-ASCII orthographies such as German. These "slipped-hat" conventions make use of the caret (^) or greater than sign (>) to represent the circumflex. For example, ŝanco may be written ^sanco, s^anco, or s>anco. However, they have generally fallen out of favor.
A vertical line text cursor with a small left-pointing or right-pointing appendage are for indicating the direction of text flow on systems that support bi-directional text, and is thus usually known among programmers as a 'bidi cursor'. In some cases, the cursor may split into two parts, each indicating where left-to- right and right-to-left text would be inserted.ATSUI Programming Guide: Caret Handling, page 32.
William Peskett (born 1952) is a poet from Northern Ireland. Peskett was educated in Belfast and at Cambridge University, where he read natural sciences. He has published two volumes of poems, The Nightowl’s Dissection (Secker & Warburg 1975) and Survivors (Secker & Warburg 1980), for the first of which he won an Eric Gregory Award for poetry. In the 1970s, Peskett edited the poetry magazine, Caret, with Trevor McMahon and Robert Johnstone.
The cursor for the Windows Command Prompt (appearing as an underscore at the end of the line) In most command-line interfaces or text editors, the text cursor, also known as a caret,FIX: The caret shape appears as a thick rectangle after you switch from the Korean Input Method Editor (IME) to English in Visual FoxPro 8.0 is an underscore, a solid rectangle, or a vertical line, which may be flashing or steady, indicating where text will be placed when entered (the insertion point). In text mode displays, it was not possible to show a vertical bar between characters to show where the new text would be inserted, so an underscore or block cursor was used instead. In situations where a block was used, the block was usually created by inverting the pixels of the character using the boolean math exclusive or function.U.S. Patent #4197590 On text editors and word processors of modern design on bitmapped displays, the vertical bar is typically used instead.
A required usage dependency from a component to an interface is illustrated by a half-circle, or socket, labelled with the name of the interface, attached by a solid line to the component that requires this interface. Inherited interfaces may be shown with a lollipop, preceding the name label with a caret symbol. To illustrate dependencies between the two, use a solid line with a plain arrowhead joining the socket to the lollipop.
The language commands always start with a caret ('`^`') or tilde sign ('`~`'). Currently, more than 170 commands exist in ZPL II. Each format has to start with the command `^XA` and end with `^XZ`. For instance, the font size is sent to the printer with the `^ADN,n,m` command, where `n` and `m` are integers denoting the font size and spacing characteristics; `^ADN,18,10` is the smallest size and `^ADN,180,100` the largest.
Maria Eutokia was the second wife of King Gregorio I Maputeoa. Christianity was introduced to the Gambier Islands in her lifetime by French Picpus priests, Honoré Laval and François Caret with the support of her husband Maputeoa and his uncle Matua, the high priest. She was baptized with the name Maria Eutokia after her conversion to the new faith. Maria Eutokia and Maputeoa had five children, two sons and three daughters, which survived infancy.
Veloutaries (Heliotropium foertherianum) and purslane (Portulaca oleracea), with growth shaped by a dominant east winds are present everywhere on the island. The fauna consists mainly of hermit crabs (Paguroidea), seabirds, and sea turtles for which the island is an important nesting place. The green turtle (Chelonia mydas), also known as the freshwater turtle, is mainly encountered and, to a lesser extent, the tortoiseshell turtle, better known as the caret. The waters are rich with fish.
The primary difference between the new statue and previous one is that the new one is made of bronze and all of the legs are on the ground and the tail is wrapped around its legs rather than raised, so it won't get damaged by vandals. The new statue is outside Stephens Hall and was unveiled on February 8, 2007 where Caret said it would be "visible to passersby on York Road as well as students".
In expressions such as a^b, the notation for exponentiation is usually to write the exponent b as a superscript to the base number a. But many environments -- such as programming languages and plain-text e-mail -- do not support superscript typesetting. People have adopted the linear notation a \uparrow b for such environments; the up-arrow suggests 'raising to the power of'. If the character set does not contain an up arrow, the caret (^) is used instead.

Akakio Tematereikura was the son of Matua, the high priest of Mangareva, and his wife Toa-Matui. He was also a cousin of King Maputeoa. He and his family were members of the royal togoʻiti class of chiefs of the island of Mangareva in the Gambier Islands. Christianity was introduced to the Gambier Islands in the 1830s by French Picpus priests, Honoré Laval and François Caret with the support of King Maputeoa and his father Matua.
The GSTrans string processing API on Acorn operating systems for the Atom, BBC Micro, Archimedes and later RISC OS machines use the vertical bar character in place of the caret. For example, (pronounced "control em", the same as for the notation) is the carriage return character, ASCII 13. is the vertical bar character code 124, is character 127 as above and adds 128 to the code of the character that follows it, so is character code .
She returned to her alma mater in January 2012, succeeding Robert L. Caret as president. In 2013, Loeschke decided to end the baseball and men's soccer programs at Towson, causing Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot to call for her to resign. With extra fundraising efforts, a fee increase, and a financial commitment from the state of Maryland, the baseball program was later restored. Loeschke was diagnosed with adrenal cancer in April 2014, and resigned the presidency in December of that year.
The folklore of the islands records a slide into civil war and even cannibalism as trade links with the outside world broke down, and archaeological studies have confirmed this tragic story. When Laval and Caret arrived the population of the Gambiers was estimated at 800 to 1,000.Wiltgen, Ralph M., "The Picpus Missionaries Reach the Gambier Islands", The Founding of the Roman Catholic Church in Oceania, 1825 to 1850, Wipf and Stock Publishers, 2010 Karl Rensch says they counted 2,124 souls.Rencsh, Karl.
In Unix shells and Windows PowerShell, ranges of characters enclosed in square brackets ( and ) match a single character within the set; for example, matches any single uppercase or lowercase letter. In Unix shells, a leading exclamation mark negates the set and matches only a character not within the list. In shells that interpret as a history substitution, a leading caret can be used instead. The operation of matching of wildcard patterns to multiple file or path names is referred to as globbing.
One manuscript containing the vida calls him miser N'Ot del Carret ("mister Lord Otto of Carretto"), another gives messer Ot del Caret, without the title "lord" (Occitan en or n′). This places Peire's activity before 1209, when Ottone lost Cortemilia. It has been suggested that Peire's surname could be a misreading of de Lamula, as there are several places called Lamula are known, or of da Lama. It may instead be a corruption of de l'Amola, indicating origins in Amola, a town in Frignano.
Bernardo Putairi was a member of the royal togoʻiti class of chiefs of the island of Mangareva in the Gambier Islands. He was considered to be from a junior branch of the main royal line. According to French Picpus priest Honoré Laval, he was the descendant of a fallen dynasty. Christianity was introduced to the Gambier Islands in his lifetime by French Picpus priests, Honoré Laval and François Caret with the support of King Maputeoa (of the main line) and his uncle Matua, the high priest.
Arone Teikatoara was a member of the royal togoʻiti class of chiefs of the island of Mangareva in the Gambier Islands. He was a younger brother or the son of a younger brother of King Maputeoa. He shared the same name with Te Ika-tohora, the father of Maputeoa, who was killed by a shark. Christianity was introduced to the Gambier Islands in the 1830s by French Picpus priests, Honoré Laval and François Caret with the support of King Maputeoa and his uncle Matua, the high priest.
The MUMPS term globals does not refer strictly to unscoped variables, as in the C tradition. MUMPS Globals are variables which are automatically and transparently stored on disk and persist beyond program, routine, or process completion. Globals are used exactly like ordinary variables, but with the caret character prefixed to the variable name. Modifying the earlier example as follows: SET ^A("first_name")="Bob" SET ^A("last_name")="Dobbs" results in creation of a new disk record, which is immediately inserted within the file structure of the disk.
Queen Pomare and her family on the verandah of Mr.Pritchard's house, during the French Invasion of Tahiti In 1836, the Queen's advisor Pritchard had two French Catholic priests expelled, François Caret and Honoré Laval. As a result, in 1838 France sent Admiral Abel Aubert du Petit-Thouars to get reparation. Once his mission had been completed, Admiral Du Petit-Thouars sailed towards the Marquesas Islands, which he annexed in 1842. Also in 1842, a European crisis involving Morocco escalated between France and Great Britain, souring their relations.
Component-states which represent nodes of behavior are composed sequentially or concurrently to construct a behavior tree that represents the behavior expressed in the natural language requirements. A behavior tree with leaf nodes may revert (symbolized by adding the caret operator ^) to an ancestor node to repeat behavior, or start a new thread (symbolized by two carets ^^). A behavior tree specifies state changes in components, how data and control is passed between components and how threads interact. There are constructs for creating and breaking relations.
Blandfield is a historic plantation house located at Caret, Essex County, Virginia. It was built about 1716–1720, and is a brick dwelling consisting of a two-story, central block with flanking two-story dependencies connected by one-story hyphens in the Georgian style. Blandfield was built for William Beverley (1696–1756), son of Virginia's first native-born historian, Robert Beverley, Jr. (c. 1673–1722). The house is one of the largest colonial plantation mansions in Virginia, and as of 1969, was still in the Beverley family.
The term caron is used in the official names of Unicode characters (e.g., "Latin capital letter Z with caron"). Its earliest known use was in the United States Government Printing Office Style Manual of 1967, and it was later used in character sets such as DIN 31624 (1979), ISO 5426 (1980), ISO/IEC 6937 (1983) and ISO/IEC 8859-2 (1985).Andrew West, Antedating the Caron Its actual origin remains obscure, but some have suggested that it may derive from a fusion of caret and macron.Unicode.
If exponentiation is indicated by stacked symbols using superscript notation, the usual rule is to work from the top down: : which typically is not equal to (ab)c. However, when using operator notation with a caret (^) or arrow (↑), there is no common standard. For example, Microsoft Excel and computation programming language MATLAB evaluate `a^b^c` as (ab)c, but Google Search and Wolfram Alpha as a(bc). Thus `4^3^2` is evaluated to 4,096 in the first case and to 262,144 in the second case.
Ottone was a patron of several troubadours, composers of Old Occitan lyric poetry. He is prominent in the vida (short vernacular biography) of Peire de la Mula. In one manuscript his name is given as miser N'Ot del Carret ("mister Lord Otto of Carretto"), in another as messer Ot del Caret, without the title "lord" (Occitan en or n′). There are allusions in the work of Peire de la Mula that may place Falquet de Romans at the court of Ottone del Carretto also.
In 1834, the French Picpus priests Honoré Laval and François Caret with their assistant Columba Murphy founded a Roman Catholic mission in the Gambiers. After their success here, they moved to Tahiti in 1836. Mangareva along with its dependencies in the Gambier Islands were ruled by a line of kings and later regents that ruled until the French formally annexed the islands in 1881. A French protectorate was requested on 16 February 1844 by King Maputeoa but was never ratified by the French government.
Born 26 April 1847, he was the eldest surviving son of King Gregorio I Maputeoa and Queen Maria Eutokia Toaputeitou, one of his two wives. Joseph had four siblings: one brother named Jean Népomucène and three sisters, two of whom became nuns in the Rouru Convent on Mount Duff. Prior to his birth, his father and his great uncle Matua played pivotal roles in the conversion of the Gambier Islands to Christianity by French Picpus priests, Honoré Laval and François Caret. At the age of ten, Joseph became king upon Maputeoa's death.
François d'Assise Caret was born 4 July 1802 in Miniac-sous-Bécherel (Ille-et-Vilaine). He was already a priest by 1829, when he became a professed member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. In February 1834, he sailed from Bordeaux for Valparaiso with Father Honoré Laval. Advised by one Captain Mauruc that Protestant missionaries had not yet reached the Gambier archipelago, they took passage on the Peruvian, out of Boston, and arrived 8 August on Akamaru, where they found a representatives of the London Missionary Society already established.
Synchronous Idle (SYN) is the ASCII control character 22 (0x16), represented as in caret notation. In EBCDIC the corresponding character is 50 (0x32). Synchronous Idle is used in some synchronous serial communication systems such as Teletype machines or the Binary Synchronous (Bisync) protocol to provide a signal from which synchronous correction may be achieved between data terminal equipment, particularly when no other character is being transmitted. The SYN character has the bit pattern 00010110 (EBCDIC 00110010), which has the property that it is distinct from any bit-wise rotation of itself.
This technique (also known as overstrike) is the basis for such spacing modifiers in computer character sets such as the ASCII caret (^, for the circumflex accent). Backspace composition no longer works with typical modern digital displays or typesetting systemsThere is no reason why a digital display or typesetting system could not be designed to allow backspace composition, a.k.a. overstrike, if an engineer chose to do that. As most contemporary computer display and typesetting systems are raster graphics- based rather than character-based (as of 2012), they make overstrike actually quite easy to implement.
In a slightly different sense to the one above, tonality can also be used to refer to musical phenomena perceived or preinterpreted in terms of the categories of tonal theories. This is a psychophysical sense, where for example "listeners tend to hear a given pitch as, for instance, an A above middle C, an augmented 4th above E, the minor 3rd in an F minor triad, a dominant in relation to D, or (where the caret designates a scale degree) in G major rather than a mere acoustical frequency, in this case 440 Hz" .
Father Caret and Father Laval eventually converted Matua and he donated the marae (temples) to the missionaries to build churches. Fearing the ulterior intentions of his uncle, Maputeoa began appearing in churches during mass. Matua and Maputeoa consented to the dismantling of the Te Keika marae, which was the largest of its kind on Rikitea, and in its place, St. Michael's Cathedral was built, which became the largest church in the South Pacific islands. Both uncle and nephew reconciled with each other around this time after the deathbed baptism of an aunt of the king.
Per (Bulyka). After 1870, both the distinction for the phoneme and the new shape of the letter still were not consistently used until the mid-1900s for technical problems, per Bulyka. Among the first publications using it were folklore collections published by Michał Federowski and the first edition of Francišak Bahuševič's Dudka Biełaruskaja (Belarusian flute, published in Kraków, 1891). For quite a while other kinds of renderings (plain , or with added accent, haček, or caret) were still being used, sometimes within a single publication (Bahushevich, 1891, Pachobka, 1915), also supposedly because of technical problems.
In her second year she switched to physics, graduating in 2016. She was a self-taught computer programmer, and between 2013 and 2015 participated in the Google Summer of Code project, working on implementing the FFTW3 library for Ruby. As part of the Summer of Code, she interned in the Outreach Program for Women of the GNOME Foundation, where she worked on the Java ATK Wrapper, a module to translate Swing events for the Accessibility Toolkit, and on implementing a caret and focus tracking device in GNOME Shell. Berns was active in Scottish amateur boxing.
This brought the library to more developers and contributed to its popularity among the Kaggle community, where it has been used for a large number of competitions. It was soon integrated with a number of other packages making it easier to use in their respective communities. It has now been integrated with scikit-learn for Python users and with the caret package for R users. It can also be integrated into Data Flow frameworks like Apache Spark, Apache Hadoop, and Apache Flink using the abstracted Rabit and XGBoost4J.
The caret () is a V-shaped grapheme, usually inverted and sometimes extended, used in proofreading and typography to indicate that additional material needs to be inserted at this point in the text. A similar mark has a variety of unrelated uses in programming, mathematics and other contexts. The symbol was included in typewriter and computer keyboards so that circumflex accents could be overprinted on letters (as in ). This facility is not provided as standard on typical US keyboard settings and so the character became reused in computer languages for many other purposes.
In SQL, wildcard characters can be used in LIKE expressions; the percent sign matches zero or more characters, and underscore a single character. Transact-SQL also supports square brackets ( and ) to list sets and ranges of characters to match, a leading caret negates the set and matches only a character not within the list. In Microsoft Access, the asterisk sign matches zero or more characters, the question mark matches a single character, the number sign matches a single digit (), and square brackets can be used for sets or ranges of characters to match.
The penultimate syllable produces an adjective, and the last creates an adverb. For example, :midofa to prefer, mîdofa preference, midôfa preferable, midofâ preferably :resolmila to continue, rêsolmila continuation, resôlmila one who continues, resolmîla continual, resolmilâ continually On computers using keyboard layouts without the circumflex accent, you can either print the syllable using capital letters, or place a caret between letters of a syllable or after a syllable. Due to the grammar and word order of Solresol, distinguishing parts of speech aren't usually required to understand the sentence. The various tense-and-mood particles are the double syllables, as given in vocabulary above.
Pressing the backspace key on a computer terminal would generate the ASCII code 08, BS or Backspace, a control code which would delete the preceding character. That control code could also be accessed by pressing Control-H, as H is the eighth letter of the Latin alphabet. Terminals which did not have the backspace code mapped to the function of moving the cursor backwards and deleting the preceding character would display the symbols ^H (caret, H) when the backspace key was pressed. Even if a terminal did interpret backspace by deleting the preceding character, the system receiving the text might not.
The uncles' allegiance to the king was only formal. On August 1834, French Pipcus missionaries, headed by Father Honoré Laval and Father François Caret from Chile of the order of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, landed at Mangareva, but were rebuffed by the king. They managed to land on a small island where the local chief gave them support to learn the Mangareva language and the islanders learned about Christianity. Within one year of their arrival, the missionaries converted the islanders at Taravai, Aukena and Akamaru to Christianity, established churches, and even made the islanders wear tunics.
One may find quite a few silly examples in the Jargon File, which also mentions subgenres of ASCII art humor: puns on the letter/character names (e.g., if read "B" as "bee" and the caret character (^) as "carrot", the one may create an ASCII art rebus for a "bee in a carrot patch") and pictures of "silly cows" .Eric S. Raymond, The New Hacker's Dictionary, , 1996, pp. 48, 49 The ability to easily manipulate with images and videos combined with ease of the dissemination of them via the Internet introduced new forms of graphical humor, such as lolcats, demotivators, and funny animations.
All variable names prefixed with the caret character ("^") use permanent (instead of RAM) storage, will maintain their values after the application exits, and will be visible to (and modifiable by) other running applications. Variables using this shared and permanent storage are called Globals in MUMPS, because the scoping of these variables is "globally available" to all jobs on the system. The more recent and more common use of the name "global variables" in other languages is a more limited scoping of names, coming from the fact that unscoped variables are "globally" available to any programs running in the same process, but not shared among multiple processes. The MUMPS Storage mode (i.e.
Ruins of the Re'e Seminary College on Aukena, one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in French Polynesia Tiripone was born to the royal togoʻiti class of chiefs of the island of Mangareva in the Gambier Islands. His family was considered to be from a junior or fallen branch of the main royal line. His parents were Gertrude Toategaru and Bernardo Putairi (also called Maohomotu in some sources), who became the last ruling regent of Mangareva. Prior to his birth, Christianity was introduced to the Gambier Islands by French Picpus priests, Honoré Laval and François Caret with the support of King Maputeoa and his uncle Matua, the high priest.
Mangareva also had nominal control over the other Gambier Islands including Akamaru, Aukena, and Taravai, which had their own kings who were vassals to the monarch at Rikitea. Christian missionaries headed by Father Honoré Laval and Father François Caret from Chile of the order of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, landed in August 1834, at Mangareva, which was then an independent kingdom under King Maputeoa. The king refused them access to the main island of Mangareva. However, the missionaries managed to land on a small island where the local chief gave them support to learn the Mangareva language and the islanders learned about Christianity.
The open-mid back unrounded vowel, or low-mid back unrounded vowel, is a type of vowel sound, used in some spoken languages. The symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet that represents this sound is , graphically a rotated lowercase "v" (called a turned V but created as a small-capital without the crossbar). Both the symbol and the sound are commonly referred to as either a wedge, a caret, or a hat. In transcriptions for English, this symbol is commonly used for the near-open central unrounded vowel, and in transcriptions for Danish, it is used for the (somewhat mid-centralized) open back rounded vowel.
"Early European Influence on the languages of Polynesia: The Gambier Islands", Language Contact and Change in the Austronesian World, (Tom Dutton and Darrell T. Tryon, eds.), p. 484, Walter de Gruyter, 1994 The Gambiers were fairly isolated. Captain Arnaud Mauruc advised the Apostolic Prefect of Southern Oceania, Chrysostome Liausu, that ships only sailed there every five or seven years for pearl fishing as the area had no other commercial value. Liausu remained in Valparaiso to maintain communications between the scattered missions and the Congregation in France. He died there in September 1839, having contracted typhus. In August 1834 Caret and Laval arrived on Akamaru and found shelter with a French fisherman.
In September 2010 Caret hired a new Director of Athletics, Michael P. Waddell, who had significant program building experience at the highest levels of college sports and led the Tigers to unprecedented success during his three years at the helm, including eleven (11) CAA Regular Season & Tournament Championships. Waddell left Towson in 2013 for the University of Arkansas and was replaced by Tim Leonard. Towson University offers the most comprehensive sports program in the metropolitan Baltimore area, fielding 20 varsity teams that compete in the Colonial Athletic Association. Since joining the league in 2001–02, the Tigers have won CAA titles in men's and women's lacrosse, women's swimming, men's soccer, men's golf, baseball, and football.
Smuxi supports nick colors which are identical across channels and networks, a Caret Mode as seen in Firefox that allows users to navigate through the messages using the keyboard, theming with colors and fonts, configurable tray-icon support, optional stripping of colours and formattings and convenience features like CTCP support, channel search and nickname completion. It has a tabbed document interface, tabbed user interface, and support for multiple servers. Smuxi can attach to a local backend engine or a remote engine utilizing the Engine drop down menu (similar to screen used with irssi). It also includes, in client- server operation, a visual marker showing the user's last activity in an open session, and ignore filtering.
Liausu succeeded Caret as head of the mission after the latter left for the Marquesas Islands in 1839. In running the Catholic mission, Liausu and Laval treated the natives very harshly, instituting forced labor to build more than 100 buildings of stone and coral including St. Michael's Cathedral, the largest religious building in the South Pacific. Laval is often credited with the decimation of the indigenous population from 9,000 to just 500, but Liausu was co-responsible for the earlier part of the population decline through these projects. One of Liausu's legacies was the Rouru Convent located at the foot of Mount Duff in Rikitea, which was built to sequester the native women of the islands.
The notation consists of a caret () followed by a single character (usually a capital letter). The digraph stands for the control character whose ASCII code is the same as the character's ASCII code with the uppermost bit, in a 7-bit encoding, reversed. A useful mnemonic, this has the effect of rendering the C0 control character with code N, (where N is from 1 up to ) as the Nth capital letter of the alphabet, since capital letters are represented by the ASCII code range 65–90 (0x41–0x5A). Seven ASCII control characters map outside the upper-case alphabet: 0 (NUL) is , 27 (ESC) is , 28 is , 29 is , 30 is , 31 is , and 127 (DEL) is .
Screenshot of a Sinclair BASIC program that demonstrates all printable code points including BASIC keywords and the User-Defined Graphics characters (by default defined as copies of A-U). Standard US-ASCII, 0x20–0x7F, is included in the Spectrum character set except that code point 0x5E is an up-arrow (↑) instead of a caret (^), 0x60 is the pound sign (£) instead of the grave accent (`), and 0x7F is the copyright sign (©) instead of the control character `DEL`. Note that the use of 0x5E as ↑ was also the case in the older 1963 version of ASCII. The £ sign was not mapped to 0x23 as in the British variant of ASCII (ISO-646-GB), allowing both the pound sign and the number sign (#) simultaneously.
The ruins of Rouru Convent, founded by Father Cyprien Liausu On 9 May 1835, Cyprien Liausu and Bishop Étienne Jérôme Rouchouze, along with two other priests Louis Désiré Maigret, Frédéric Pages and two catechist brothers: Gilbert Soulié and Fabien Costes and one lay brother Urbain Flerot arrived in the Gambier Islands to assist the Catholic mission initiated by Fathers François Caret and Honoré Laval and their assistant Brother Columba Murphy the previous year. The Picpusien missionaries were successful in converting many of the islanders despite initial hostility from the local rulers. Bishop Rouchouze baptized the native king Maputeoa and his family on 25 August 1836. Maputeoa took the name Gregorio in honor of Pope Gregory XVI who had deputed the missionaries to eastern Oceania.
The town's history dates to the era when the island was first settled with people from the Marquesas Islands in 1100 AD. Captain James Wilson of the London Missionary Society arrived in 1797 on Duff, naming the islands after the English Admiral James Gambier who had facilitated his expedition. Before the Catholic missionaries' arrival, cannibalism was practiced under the rule of the local kings. French Picpus priests Father François Caret and Father Honoré Laval, of the Congregation for the Sacred Hearts, landed here in 1834. They arrived from Chile. Father Hippolyte Roussel, who had arrived at Rikitea with more than 100 Rapa Nui people on 4 July 1871, assumed charge of Laval's Rikitea mission, and served there till he died in 1898.
In September 2006, The Towerlight reported that a new bronze tiger statue had been unveiled as the centerpiece of the university's "Capital Campaign" to raise $50 million. The primary difference between the new statue and previous one is that the new one is made of bronze and all of the legs are on the ground and the tail is wrapped around its legs rather than raised, so it won't get damaged by vandals. The new statue is outside Stephens Hall and was unveiled on February 8, 2007 where Caret said it would be "visible to passersby on York Road as well as students".The Future of Towson UniversityTowson's new Tiger built to last A lot of students, however, have expressed disapproval of putting the new statue outside of Stephens Hall.
In August 7, 1834, Father François Caret and Father Honoré Laval with Murphy serving as their assistant and catechists founded the Roman Catholic mission in the Gambier Islands, the first in the Pacific Islands, after landing on the island of Akamaru. In 1835, Murphy was sent periodically to Hawaii by Father Alexis Bachelot, SS.CC., the Apostolic Prefect of Hawaii, who was living in exile in Lower California, to evaluate the situation which the Roman Catholic Church had found itself in the Hawaiian Islands. As a seminarian, still technically a layman, he was allowed to enter the kingdom, from which the priests of his Order were barred. It was during these visits that he came to determine that the time was right for the priests to return and establish their presence in the mission, which had been maintained by the lay brothers who had been allowed to remain.
See "Historical subjects from the Triumphal Arch," British Museum collection database; Schauerte, Thomas Ulrich, Die Ehrenpforte für Kaiser Maximilian I, Deutscher Kunstverlag, (2001), pp. 281–2, the complete woodcut has the following Latin inscription; "Illud vero laude non caret, cu' Flandos, atque sicambros suos valida manu inviseret, ut reges Angliae partes, ad versus regem Franciae tueretur, Id quod sine sanguine fieri nequit, Unde cu' iam utraque ex parte dimicatum esset fortiter, ac utinque haud pauci occubissent victoriu portitas est Caesar deinde Terrauonam solo aequevet Tornavia, oppugnationem nom sustilem pacta pace cu' Caesare, in potestatem illum receptem." Henry commissioned commemorative paintings of the meeting and of the battle which showed him involved in the centre of the action, though Hall pointed out he took advice to stay with the foot soldiers.Painting of the battle, Royal Collection, Bridgman Art Library In Henry's inventory, one painting was noted as "A Table wherein is conteined the Seginge of Torney and Turwyn".
Of course the former way needs more font memory, but gives the possibility of getting better shapes, since it is complicated to create fully stylistically correct combinations which may be preferred when creating documents. There is also the possibility of simply stacking a (sequence of) medial(s) (jungseong) and then a (sequence of) final(s) (jongseong) and/or a Middle Korean pitch mark, if needed on top of the (sequence of) initial(s) (choseong), if the font has medial and final jamos with zero-width spacing that are inserted to the left of the cursor or caret, thus appearing in the right place below or to the right of the initial. If a syllable has a horizontal medial (, , , or ), the initial will probably appear further left in a complete syllable than is the case in pre-formed syllables due to the space that must be reserved for a vertical medial, giving an aesthetically poor appearance to what may be the only way to display Middle Korean hangul text without resorting to images, romanisation, replacement of obsolete jamo or non-standard encodings. However, most current fonts do not support this.
