Where to watch: Amazon Prime Big Mouth takes a look at puberty in a way that no other animated show has done before, being brutally honest about what all those stupid hormones did to our growing bodies while simultaneously getting really really weird about seventh graders' sexualities.

Streaming services like Netflix, on the other hand, allow a show like Big Mouth a degree of freedom that wouldn't fly outside pay-cable, subject to no real restrictions outside the TV-MA rating displayed onscreen, and any parental control that might block it from young eyes.

But where these works seem most necessary is to the audiences still figuring it all out — the teens whose struggles are so rarely represented in such an understandable way, whether by the sly social observation of American Vandal or the broad, cartoon comedy of Big Mouth.

"Big Mouth," which follows a group of teenagers as they experience puberty with help from their "hormone monsters," is one of few Netflix original series to have a 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for an Emmy this year for best animated program.

The full trailer for Nick Kroll's animated Big Mouth show, which is streaming all episodes on Netflix on September 29, reveals a show with a lot of candid discussion about what it's like to be a kid dealing with the raging onset of hormones and young adulthood.

Created by comedian Nick Kroll, his childhood best friend Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett, Big Mouth is a hilarious show that you would never want to watch with your parents, but is perfect for bundling up under a blanket alone and doing hot cocoa spit takes at your screen.

In between letting an anthropomorphized "hormone monster" wreak havoc, Big Mouth actually tells some of TV's most compassionate (and always timely) stories about consent, exploration, learning how to set boundaries, and the radical power of just being honest about your feelings, no matter how dumb or small they might feel.

With season 5 of BoJack Horseman premiering on September 14th and the second season of Big Mouth due out later in 2018, Netflix was clearly looking to add to its stable of successful cartoons for adults when it contracted The Simpsons and Futurama creator Matt Groening for a 20-episode series.

By the end of its wildly ambitious finale — which takes the characters to Human Resources, the dimension the Hormone Monsters come from — season two has made a case that Big Mouth should run for as long as it can keep telling painfully funny stories about horribly painful moments of life.

The good news is that in this new media ecosystem, there is already a growing category of movies and series, like Big Mouth and American Vandal, that frankly tackle the messy realities of teen life, and — thanks to airing on Netflix and other streaming platforms — are freely accessible to the viewers those stories will be most meaningful to.

At its best and its worst, Big Mouth is a vivid, excruciating voyage back to a time in life that so many of us would love to completely forget, but laced with enough humor and good-hearted horniness (for those of all genders and sexual persuasions) to remind us why getting to the other side of puberty is worth it after all.

Big Mouth, now in its second season on Netflix, is animated in faintly grotesque style, partially to accommodate its bizarre flights of fancy — various monsters, a moving Statue of Liberty that speaks with a French accent, a pregnant pillow, the attic-dwelling ghost of Duke Ellington — but also, as one meta joke in the first season's finale observes, to get away with the comically graphic content.

For example, the comedy channel could run modern classic films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Van Wilder during the day, top episodes of Arrested Development and Parks And Recreation in the afternoon, a featured recent release film like The Lobster in prime time, and then off-kilter cult hits like Monty Python or its own show Big Mouth in the late-night slots.

While he hasn't made a Netflix special, it's probably only a matter of time, since Young-White, who has had nearly as much success writing (the Netflix series "Big Mouth" and "American Vandal") as doing stand-up, has already developed the building blocks of a killer debut: sharp introductory jokes about his look and name (the stand-up version of a series pilot setting the scene), a clearly defined point of view that balances the prickly with the ingratiating, and an effortless star charisma that cannot be taught.
