In 1869, Charles Wyville Thomson dredged marine life from a depth of , finally dispelling Forbes' azoic theory. In light of this evidence, the Azoic hypothesis would come to be seen as a false hypothesis and give way to vastly increased efforts in deep-sea exploration and associated marine life. Since being discredited, the theory has been referenced widely in popular culture, such as Keble Ball 2017 and alluded to in documentaries that explore and showcase deep-sea marine life.

The Azoic hypothesis (sometimes referred to as the Abyssus theory) is a superseded scientific theory proposed by Edward Forbes in 1843, stating that the abundance and variety of marine life decreased with increasing depth and, by extrapolation of his own measurements, Forbes calculated that marine life would cease to exist below .

This led to a mistaken impression that the deep-sea bed lacked species diversity, as theorised by Forbes in his Azoic hypothesis. Later samplers devised by Howard L. Shwadchuck ended the project in 2005, releasing the short R.I.P. It was founded in 1999 by Kristy Venrick of The Azoic, after Oneiroid Psychosis asked her to release their next album. Though she did not have a record label at the time, Oneiroid Psychosis was impressed by Kristy's success at promoting her own band. After considering the proposal, a year later, Kristy agreed and decided to begin Nilaihah Records.

Since then, the label has grown considerably, signing other notable acts spanning a variety of electronic music styles, such as Unheilig, The Azoic, and Frozen Plasma. The label formed a partnership with the German label Infacted, serving as the North American outlet for European bands like Ad Inferna, XP8, NamNamBulu, Conetik, Endanger, and Liquid Divine, signing them to distribution deals. The label had a successful joint venture with Infacted on Muscle and Hate, a tribute to Nitzer Ebb featuring members of XP8 and Icon of Coil. Nilaihah Records has also released several other notable bands.

Despite the album's runaway success, Tinman fell into financial trouble, washing out a follow-up remix companion to Angels. Tinman finally shut down in 2005, just as the group announced a new album was in the works. In 2005, after recording the album, titled Beyond Humanity, Interface began an exhaustive search for a new label, finally landing with Nilaihah Records, a Columbus, Ohio-based label founded by Kristy Venrick of The Azoic. Finally released in March 2006 as an expanded edition with extra tracks added on, the album once again solidified the group's songwriting and production ability.

Professor Edward Forbes FRS, FGS (12 February 1815 – 18 November 1854) was a Manx naturalist. In 1846, he proposed that the distributions of montane plants and animals had been compressed downslope, and some oceanic islands connected to the mainland, during the recent ice age. This mechanism, which was the first natural explanation to explain the distributions of the same species on now-isolated islands and mountain tops, was discovered independently by Charles Darwin, who credited Forbes with the idea. He also incorrectly deduced, the so-called azoic hypothesis, that life under the sea would decline to the point that no life forms could exist below a certain depth.

That same year, the project won the 2012 Innovation Prize in the Regional Contemporary Art Project nomination. Dolgov continued to collect and draw plants afterwards, so that the later versions of the Herbarium exhibition feature works executed in 2012 and later, as well as more recent installation pieces. In 2013, at the Moscow State University’s Zoological Museum in collaboration with Gallery 21 Ilya Dolgov presented his first personal exhibition in Moscow. In the Azoic project, the artist continued his investigation of the limits of relations between man, nature and machines. Here, Dolgov models a system of interconnections between imaginary creatures—chimeras—unveiling the ties inherent in the modern world, basing on the concept of Azoy as “an ancient period in the history of the Earth, where there were no organisms, machines and humans, while the planet was inhabited by the Azoyids. In those creatures, the biological, the technological and the cultural had not yet divided into separate ways of being”.
