In the week of "extended spring break," a term used to disguise the fact that there is a deadly pandemic spreading across the world, I've been avoiding the news as best as I can and doing activities that one would naturally do in a moment of crisis: make an apple pie, weave, watch cooking shows on an exercise bike, and talk online with friends from a trans sleep-away camp.

Either way, if you're looking for a way to escape the drama, the holiday weekend is a perfect time to catch up on all the TV you've missed while you were busy watching even more TV. You probably want to skip the psychological thrillers and true crime mysteries when your fam is already making you homicidal, so we've compiled a list of shows as comforting as warm apple pie and candied yams.

When we were beleaguered young reporters and felt particularly sorry for ourselves, Connie and I would go to the Little Pie Company's shop down the street from the office, buy one of the smaller versions of the sour-cream apple pie, take it back to the Times cafeteria, and split it for lunch — no main course or anything, just us and two forks with which we ate directly from the tinfoil container.
