Stephen shares his opinions about religion, especially as they relate to the recent death of his mother, with his quasi-friend Buck Mulligan, who manages to offend Stephen before making plans to go drinking later that evening as they part ways. In the second chapter Stephen teaches a class of boys a history lesson on ancient Rome. In the "Proteus" chapter (in Greek myth Proteus was the old man of the sea and the shepherd of sea animals who knew all things past, present, and future but disliked telling what he knew), Stephen ambles along the strand as his thoughts are related in the form of an internal monologue. Following several chapters concerning Bloom, Stephen returns to the fore of the novel in the library episode, in which he expounds at length to some acquaintances his theory of the obscurely autobiographical nature of Shakespeare's works and questions the institution of fatherhood, deeming it to be a fiction.

She ambles assuredly through the soulful favorite "Please Come Home for Christmas (Bells Will Be Ringing)" and hangs by the piano for a torchy "White Christmas." Newsdays music columnist Glenn Gamboa wrote that "Clarkson handles it all expertly – hitting remarkably high notes on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and swinging jazzily on "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with Dunn. The new songs make Wrapped in Red a real gift, as the title track and "Underneath the Tree" channel the Phil Spector Christmas albums; and "4 Carats" somehow blends "Stronger" and "Santa Baby". Reviewing for HitFix, Melinda Newman gave the album an "A" rating, praising Clarkson's vocal performances and noting that she and Greg Kurstin "have clearly studied legendary Christmas albums of yore—most notably Spector's A Christmas Gift For You and Andy Williams' Merry Christmas—to lovingly recreate Christmas standards, as well as craft new ones in the image of those sets.

Paul Simpson of AllMusic described the album as "highly intricate electro- acoustic pieces that bring to mind composers like Morton Subotnick and György Ligeti rather than any of Tobin's former labelmates" but concluded that "Fear in a Handful of Dust seems like a departure for Tobin, but even while he's abandoning conventional rhythms or genre signifiers, his music remains unmistakably human, and as challenging as the album might seem, it's easier to listen to than one might expect." Daryl Keating of Exclaim! called the record Tobin's "most wistful work to date" and "the best sonic definition for imperfect beauty we've got right now", and said, "There's a very loose and purposefully flawed feel to this record... Fear in a Handful of Dust ambles through the woods in anything but a straight line." Chris Ingalls of PopMatters noted the mix of modern synthesiser sounds and old samples, stating that "while lots of electronic instrumental music seems hell-bent on simulating gleaming perfection, Tobin's universe is a cracked one, and an oddly human one at that".
