Born in North Adelaide, South Australia, Dolman started bowling slow left-arm wrist-spin at primary school and was first noticed as a promising bowler aged 14.Coward, M. "Dolman, the wrong-un who has finally got it right", The Age, 13 January 1982, p. 23. He began appearing in representative schoolboy sides and made the Australian Young Cricketers team to England in 1977, playing two unofficial One Day Internationals against England Young Cricketers, and an Australian U/19s tour to Sri Lanka, playing in an unofficial Test match.

Despite lacking a large amount of practice time he developed a leg-break, wrong un, and quicker ball resulting in him becoming the most effective bowler in the sub-district competition. He also became a notable slips fielder and was able to keep wicket. In 1922 Hawthorn and East Melbourne merged to become one senior district side and Rimington began to devote more time to practice in order to serve the club. He was also selected to travel to Tasmania with the Victorian side in February, 1922, and played in the first- class match scoring 91 in Victoria's only innings.

Hordern who is well known as the first Australian cricketer to develop the ability to bowl the googly (wrong 'un) delivery. The googly is a delivery bowled by a leg spin bowler in a normal manner, but which turns in the opposite direction to a normal leg-break. The delivery was originally developed by English cricketer Bernard Bosanquet in the early 1900s while he was a student at Oxford University and he used it to great effect against Australia's batsman on England's tour of Australia in 1903/04.

In March 2018, he was named in New Zealand's Test squad for their series against England, replacing Mitchell Santner, who was ruled out due to injury, and in a day-night Test match in Auckland he took three wickets in the second innings, leading New Zealand to victory.

In Checkmate it is described how railway passengers, before boarding their train, would grab the latest novel from the bookstall at Victoria Station in order to be able to indulge in some light reading during their journey. Checkmate itself would have been such a novel: sensational, thrilling -- a variation of the old "damsel in distress" motif --, romantic, sexy, with characters larger than life, with lots of complications during the plot but a clear-cut ending where good and virtuous behavior is rewarded and evil is punished.
