Amata cantori is a moth in the genus Amata (or Syntomis) of the subfamily Arctiinae ("woolly bears" or "tiger moths"). The species was first described by Frederic Moore in 1859. It is found on Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. Adults are robust and black.

Early forget-me-nots and marram grass are among those that hug the ground and need little water. Many species of insects, moths, and butterflies appreciate this environment, including the 'woolly bears' (tiger moth caterpillars). Dark green fritillary, and grayling butterflies bask in the sun during July and August in the Lindisfarne NNR. Big brown-lipped snails can also be found.

Amata huebneri, the wasp moth, is a moth in the genus Amata of the family Erebidae (subfamily Arctiinae - "woolly bears" or "tiger moths"). The species was first described by Jean Baptiste Boisduval in 1829. It is found from the Indo Australian tropics to northern Australia. Adults are black with yellow bands across the abdomen, and transparent windows in the wings.

This striking color polymorphism is also found in Erythrina lysistemon and Erythrina caffra. All species except the sterile hybrids E. × sykesii and E. × bidwillii have legume-type fruit, sometimes called pods, containing one or more seeds. The resilient buoyant seeds are often carried by the sea for large distances and are commonly called "sea beans". Erythrina leaves are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including the swift moth Endoclita damor and the woolly bears Hypercompe eridanus and Hypercompe icasia.

Caterpillar on Asteraceae plant Local folklore of the American Northeast and the American South hold that "woolly bears" (or "woolly worms" in the South) help humans predict the weather, similar to the groundhog. The forthcoming severity of a winter may be indicated by the amount of black on the Isabella tiger moth's caterpillar—the most familiar woolly bear in North America. More brown than black is said to mean a mild winter, while more black than brown is supposed to mean a harsh winter. However, the relative width of the black band varies among instars, not according to weather.

When both the Beyond and much of the Owl Kingdoms are mostly destroyed by a cataclysmic earthquake, Faolan leads his friends, Edme, two grizzly bear brother cubs named Toby and Burney, a mother wolf named Caila and her pup Abban, an abandoned wolf pup named Myrrglosch, and two mated bald eagles named Eelon and Zanouche (the latter is the great-great-great-granddaughter of Streak and Zan), and others (like some other dire wolves and some common puffins and banded woolly bears) to a land called the Distant Blue to begin a new life. At the same time, they are being pursued by an evil rout of rogue dire wolves (or outclanners) led by the evil yellow dire wolf Heep. Faolan and Edme also discover that they are reincarnations of two great dire wolves from ancient times, lovers Fengo and Stormfast. Faolan finds that he is also, alongside Fengo, a reincarnation of a heroic grizzly bear named Eo and a female snowy owl gadfeather named Fionula, an old friend of Madame Brunwella Plonk.
