Ten Flemish Woodchoppers in 1918 The woodchoppers of the Orne () were 10 Flemish soldiers during the First World War punished for their active or passive involvement in the Flemish Movement in the Belgian Army. They were removed from their platoons and moved to a penal military unit called the Special Forestry Platoon (Peloton Spécial Forestier) in 1918. In this penal military unit, stationed in Orne, Normandy in France, they had to work as woodchoppers as unfree labour.Dr. J. Wynyard is the son of world champion woodchoppers Jason and Karmyn Wynyard. His grandfather, Pae Wynyard, also won world titles in the sport, while his uncles compete as well. His mother also played college basketball for the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves from 1992 to 1995.

Upon the outbreak of World War II, the family moved to Harrow, Middlesex, and Goodwin attended Pinner County Grammar School. It was here that he formed his own band – Ron Goodwin and the Woodchoppers. He later studied the trumpet in London at the Guildhall School of Music.

During his career as an assemblyman, he was a member of a group of northern Wisconsin legislators known as the "Woodchoppers," who favored reintroducing bounties on wolves and other predators. In addition to serving in the Assembly, he was town chairman of Mason, Wisconsin and a member of the Bayfield County Board.

As a solo musician, Sharon Shannon has toured Australia, Europe, Hong Kong, and Japan. She has also performed for politicians such as Bill Clinton, Mary Robinson and Lech Wałęsa. Heckenberg was named after a pioneering family who settled in the area before 1840. Casper Theodore Heckenberg was born in Plymouth England in 1810 to parents Harriet and Henry, who later moved to Hull. Casper was a master mariner and operated ships between Sydney and Port Stephens in the logging trade. The family bought land in the Liverpool area and some of the Heckenberg sons became well known woodchoppers.

Two lumberman were brought in to facilitate the cutting and toppling of the tree: Paul Criss of Charleston and Ed Meek of Indianapolis. Criss brought with him a team of woodchoppers and sawyers representing the Kelly Ax and Tool Works Company. Criss was a public relations spokesperson for the Kelly Ax and Tool Works Company. Meek arrived with his own crew from the E. C. Atkins and Company, a saw manufacturer.

Since that time, the borough has grown in area as a result of annexation of the surrounding land, the largest annexation having taken place in 1953. In the 1770s, attracted by the presence of water, iron ore and wood for charcoal in the Pigeon Hills, an iron manufacturer established a forge at "Spring Forge". It is known as Spring Grove. The early German and English woodchoppers who flocked to this first Pennsylvania iron industry west of the Susquehanna River were the forebears of today's community.

Shewry's involvement in competitive woodchopping stretched for a period of over 20 years until he retired in 1934 at the age of 45. He purchased a land in Opunake where he farmed for a number of years, and moved to a small farm on Corbett Rd at Bell Block. In 1960, he gifted his competition axes and cups to the Taranaki Museum (now Puke Ariki). While many environmental activists today consider woodchoppers and timber-fellers of old as nature-hating barbarians, this could not have been further from the truth of Shewry.

A Colorado radio personality had referred to the Wolverines as the "Michigan woodchoppers" while a Colorado newspaper reported that Michigan forward George Chin was "as wide as he is high." The region around Cat Creek was largely unsettled until the 1860s, although River Crows and Ventre Indian hunters and trappers migrated through the area. Fort Musselshell trading post was built in Mosby, Montana, Garfield County, on the Missouri River, to the east. In the 1860s and 1870s, Fort Musselshell was a supply depot for "woodchoppers" and lumbermen who worked for the Missouri River steamboats, and as a trading post for hunters, trappers and Indian trappers. The fort had a colorful history with Assiniboine and Sioux Indian attacks and becoming briefly, a cattle rustlers hangout that ended when a Vigilance Committee hanged a few rustlers.

Connecticut River as seen from Great Hill in the Meshomasic State Forest, just off the Shenipsit Trail The South section of the Shenipsit trail runs from Gadpouch Road in Cobalt to Route 2 in Glastonbury. Starting on Gadpouch Road in Cobalt, CT next to the (former site of the) Meshomasic State Forest Ranger Headquarters, the trail climbs a very steep ridge to the top of Great Hill, a part of the Bald Hill Range. A spur trail takes hikers to a rocky vista with views of the Connecticut River, Middletown, and Great Hill Pond just below. The trail continues north along Great Hill Ridge, crossing Woodchoppers Rd, a dirt road in the state forest.
