Smith is an adherent of the Christian faith. By early 2011, Smith began a clothing line by the name of Resist & Rebel, which he co- operated with Andrew Paiano (Woe, Is Me) until 2013 when Andrew stepped down.
Iliad 16.433: "Ah, woe is me, for that it is fated that Sarpedon, dearest of men to me, be slain by Patroclus, son of Menoetius! And in twofold wise is my heart divided in counsel as I ponder in my thought whether I shall snatch him up while yet he liveth and set him afar from the tearful war in the rich land of Lycia, or whether I shall slay him now beneath the hands of the son of Menoetius." In the famous scene of Kerostasia, Zeus appears as the guider of destiny. Using a pair of scales he decides that Hector must die, according to his aisa (destiny).

O Waly, waly (a lament – "woe is me") up the bank, And waly, waly doun the brae (hill), And waly, waly, yon burn-side (riverside), Where I and my love wont to gae. O waly, waly, but love be bonnie (beautiful), A little time while it is new, But when 'tis auld (old), it waxeth cauld (cold), And fades away like the morning dew.

The second single, "Outbreak of Heartache" was released on July 13 through PureVolume Their debut, Cross Your Fingers, released on July 20, 2010, through Fearless Records, was met with mostly mixed reviews. The album was heavily influenced by the bands love of horror films, and of their hometown's history, evident in songs "Outbreak of Heartache" and "Never Leave Northfield", the latter of the two based on Jesse James and the James Gang's final bank robbery in Minnesota. Following the release of the album, the band toured extensively to promote their debut. On September 9, 2010 the band was announced as part of A Skylit Drive's November headlining tour with Motionless in White, Woe, Is Me and Scarlett O'Hara.
Taste of Countrys Sterling Whitaker described the song as "a more uptempo, lighthearted song that turns the old woe-is-me phrase on its ear with a savvy twist." In the song, the narrator humorously recalls a streak of favorable occurrences beginning with his girlfriend leaving him. Combs co-wrote the track with Jordan Walker of the country music duo Walker McGuire, and they both met with Ray Fulcher at a Nashville bar where they talked about wanting to write a song together, and went over the idea at Walker's house. The song's inspiration came from Combs having gone through a breakup and Walker suggesting that it be about making his ex- girlfriend mad.
In Summer of 2010 they headlined a tour with band such a Scarlett O'Hara as well as Attila, Woe, Is Me, and Abandon All Ships. On August 19, 2011, Stillman had confirmed that Drop Dead Gorgeous is currently on hiatus because each member was busy with other projects such as ManCub, The Bunny the Bear, Curses and It's Teeth. Although there have been pictures that show some members are already getting together writing music for the next album, the release of new music as Drop Dead, Gorgeous seems unlikely. On September 15, 2011, Woe, Is Me announced via-video update their new singer, Hance Alligood. Alligood was once a part of a local Atlanta band, "Oh, Manhattan". On March 7, 2012, Michael Bohn and both Ferris brothers left the band due to personal, professional, and musical differences "It came to a point where we could either continue on the path they saw fit, or we could create our own path and find happiness in our own ways," said Bohn and the Ferris brothers in a statement made shortly after their departure from the band.
Media response to Carver City was generally positive. Freeman of AllMusic applauded the band for being "smart and unique" on the album, praising elements such as the use of synthesizers and "seriously heavy" guitar riffs, especially on the tracks "Rats in the Infirmary", "Woe Is Me" and "A#1 Roller Rager". Cooper of PopMatters praised the release in comparison to its predecessor, An Answer Can Be Found, by claiming that it "strikes the right mix of theme and variety while offering a much more polished version of the sound that brought them to the dance". She went on to describe the style of the album as akin to "grandiose ‘80s thrash- and power-metal with a modern sensibility", praising the contribution of bassist Matt Deis.
Menken continued making minor changes to the song well into production. On recording a new song, Stevens said, "the pressure's sort of off — but it's also on — because it doesn't have to sound like it did before, but it should sound good enough to sit alongside the music that's already pretty great." Stevens agreed that the song is "a big, romantic, soaring number" about the Beast lamenting "I've fallen in love with her, and now she's buggered off, woe is me", while "If I Can't Love Her" is "How am I going to fall in love with her?" Replacing "If I Can't Love Her" with "Evermore" helped make the songwriters eligible for an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.

Carlo Santos of Anime News Network complimented the stories that were slightly surreal as well as Asano's penwork, but disliked the "woe-is-me" facet of the stories. David Welsh of The Comics Reporter disliked the use of overdone tropes in the stories, but praised the design of average-looking characters and the page composition, finding the stories "polished and effective," but not "linger[ing] in the mind". Johanna Carlson of Comics Worth Reading found the traits of the characters to be annoying but said that the detailed and expressive art grounded the story, making it more believable. Leroy Douresseaux of ComicBookBin praised Asano's ability to depict the struggles of young people in the first volume, but felt that this was downplayed by the large number of characters.

Anime News Network's Mike Crandol praised Alucard for being "a refreshing change from the traditional, mopey, woe-is-me vampire anti-hero", and called him "quite the cool figure". T.H.E.M Anime Reviews describes Alucard as "anti-hero through and through, but you just can't help rooting for him even when it's obvious he's not really a good guy at all..." Carl Kimlinger also from Anime News Network said "Hellsing's greatest attribute, without doubt, is Alucard. He's one of the scariest, and most unspeakably cool, anti-heroes to ever slaughter his way through an anime." Jason Thompson commented that when the manga started "Alucard looked too much like Master of Mosquiton, or another badass manga character with John Lennon glasses" and thought he seems like Vash the Stampede and his backstory is similar to Vlad the Impaler.
" At American Songwriter, Jeff Terich wrote that "Muchacho never stays in one place for too long", and that Houck "can do a tender, dreamy pop song, or he can plug in and just get straight to rocking". Austin L. Ray of The A.V. Club graded the album an A-, and called it "Houck's most accomplished release to date" that is at its core "most heartrending and life-affirming, equal parts lost-love devastation and hip-swaying, horn-led exultation." The Line of Best Fit's Janne Oinonen rated the album eight-stars, and said it is a "rewarding gem" even "despite its decidedly downbeat subject material," that "hops effortlessly over various woe-is-me traps". At Clash, Peter Adkins affirmed that "this is no outing in kitsch" because it is "a beautiful outing in hauntingly pastoral heartbreak" that he vowed is "impressive.
