Prevention and punishment of honor killings and similar crimes of passion are issues of interest to local and international advocates for women's rights, men's rights, LGBT rights, freedom of religion, and groups against domestic violence in general. Honor killing is a type of domestic violence in the broadest sense of violence within a family (not limited to intimate partner violence, which is another common meaning of the term). The justice systems of some countries, whether by explicit provisions or by lack of enforcement of existing laws, either does not prosecute or dispense reduced penalties for killings committed in the name of family honor. Some jurisdictions have more lenient penalties for crimes of passion committed without premeditation (such as murder immediately upon discovery of adultery), or explicitly have reduced penalties for a husband who kills a cheating wife (but not necessarily the reverse).

In reviewing Hilary Brace’s charcoal on Mylar drawings for the New York Times, Ken Johnson wrote, “once in a while you come across an art of such refined technique that it seems the product of sorcery more than human craft”. Despite the photographic veracity of her technique, Brace composes her images without premeditation, through an explorative process that allows them to unfold in unanticipated directions. Her current smaller, nearly postcard-sized charcoal drawings, along with her earlier charcoals, are made in a reductive manner by first darkening the entire surface with charcoal and then removing the medium with various hand-made tools, allowing the image to emerge through chance and intuition. For works of somewhat larger scale, greater complexity and more refined technique, Brace creates studies in a similarly explorative manner while she refers to photographs of sculptural tableaus and other diverse means of garnering information.

Fluid Club general manager Yerry Eka Nugraha testified in court that three of his staff had immediately after the shooting informed him that Adiguna shot Rudy. On 16 June 2005, Central Jakarta District Court sentenced Adiguna to seven years in jail for murder with intent but without premeditation and illegal possession of an unregistered firearm and ammunition. Presiding judge Lilik Mulyadi said that although all of the accusations against Adiguna had been "legitimately proven", there were several mitigating factors to warrant a light sentence. The judge listed the extenuating circumstances as: Adiguna was still young, he had a family, he had been polite during the trial, it was his first offense, he had already been “morally punished” by media coverage, and his family had apologized for the murder.
