Meanwhile, Naina gets suspicious about Avi's over-excellence in the job, assuming he is not here to work for her, but to gradually take over the cafe. Then Sándor Kossuth turned aside in his saddle, hit his right thigh with his palm, and responded: \- So then shoot here, you crook! A soldier, whose weapon was loaded, shoot him right in that place. Kossuth then rode away, without noticing that he is wounded. Sándor Kossuth met Görgei at the Galamb-tavern, where the Hungarian troops had to retreat if they were forced to do that, where the high commander told him: \- Go and [tell the medics to bandage] your wound, Sándor, because you are wounded.
It is in this context that Socrates' Myth of the Cicadas is presented. The Cicadas chirp and watch to see whether their music lulls humans to laziness or whether the humans can resist their sweet song. Cicadas were once humans who, in ancient times, allowed the first Muses to enchant them into singing and dancing for so long they stopped eating and sleeping and died without noticing. The Muses rewarded them with the gift of never needing food or sleep, and of singing from birth to death.
The original 1997 design document for Deus Ex privileges character development over all other features. The game was designed to be "genre-busting": in parts simulation, role-playing, first- person shooter, and adventure. The team wanted players to consider "who they wanted to be" in the game, and for that to alter how they behaved in the game. In this way, the game world was "deeply simulated", or realistic and believable enough that the player would solve problems in creative, emergent ways without noticing distinct puzzles.
In Homage to the Six (1992), Garaicoa installed a similar piece, with the number six written on a column without explanation, and took photos of passerby. He later developed prints of the photos he took at the installation site with the word "six" written in Spanish and a column painted at the bottom of the image. His documentation was meant to serve as a criticism of the tendency of society to process messages without challenging them, as so many people walked by without noticing the installation.
During the next two days rescue teams passed by without noticing him, as he was too weak to muster a call for help. Taniguchi was finally rescued on 11 August and taken to a country clinic about 29 km (18 miles) away from Nagasaki. By mid-September he was moved to a primary school clinic in Nagasaki to receive the first course of medical treatment from a University Hospital team. The clinic was unsanitary and initial treatments proved inadequate as his wounds became infected and worsened.
Depressed by Proof's death, Eminem fell into a period of "writer's block", where he felt everything he wrote was not worth recording. To compensate for this, Bass chose to follow a production style that would allow the artist to rap "off the top of his head, as opposed to writing a story". Eminem would then freestyle or record vocals one line at a time before interrupting and then recording another line. At the same time, according to Eminem's song rights supervisor Joel Martin, the rapper began to collect additional songs without noticing it.
In January 2012 several supposed straddles by Marcel Hirscher in the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup caused a controversy. After actually straddling a gate in the Wengen and Kitzbühel slaloms without noticing, rumours spread that he might have also straddled the first gates during his victory runs in Zagreb and Adelboden. His rival and contender for the overall world cup Ivica Kostelić was infuriated by that. After hours of video analysis, Hirscher and his mate Felix Neureuther who also was accused of straddling in the Zagreb race could be acquitted from the allegations.
With the beginnings of modern medicine the stage was set for physicians and surgeons to build a paradigm in which anesthesia became useful. On 10 December 1844, Gardner Quincy Colton held a public demonstration of nitrous oxide in Hartford, Connecticut. One of the participants, Samuel A. Cooley, sustained a significant injury to his leg while under the influence of nitrous oxide without noticing the injury. Horace Wells, a Connecticut dentist present in the audience that day, immediately seized upon the significance of this apparent analgesic effect of nitrous oxide.
A couple of seconds later, he heard a commotion on the bridge and the conning tower, which he thought might indicate that a sailor had fallen overboard. While ascending the conning tower, he clearly heard the ballast purges opening, without noticing anyone at the electrical controls. Upon arriving at the top of the conning tower, he realized that the submarine was sinking quickly by the stern. Enseigne Bienvenue ordered the opening of the purges and the closing of the hatches which allowed passage between the submarine's exterior and interior.

After his confession, Brian stated he never told Daniel about this and that he never told anyone what was happening in the house because whenever he spoke up when he was little, he would get moved.
The trail to the top of Mount Tapulao is on rolling and gradual terrain that takes hikers through a number of distinct ecosystems: from lowland grass and scrubland dominated by talahib (cogon grass) to its flanks of secondary to primary dipterocarp forest, mossy montane forest and pine forest above that extends to the adjacent mountains. During wet weather, limatik or forest leeches abound especially near the streams along the way. Parts of the trail become rivulets that trekkers easily attracts these critters without noticing being bitten, sticking on the human skin.
In August 2012, Travelocity offered a $200 coupon code to attendees at the National Federation of the Blind annual conference in Dallas. After the NFB posted the code on Twitter without mentioning the attendee restriction, Travelocity re- tweeted it without noticing the error but deleted the tweet a day later. After some travel blogs and message boards re-posted the code, many ineligible travelers used the code. Travelocity responded by cancelling all trips of people that used the code who were not on the list of attendees at the NFB annual conference.
He was critical of the AI, declaring that cars often drive "without noticing [the player] at all". In his book AI Game Engine Programming, Brian Schwab described Midtown Madness gameplay as "arcade style" and "fast and loose", and said the in-game traffic was satisfactory. IGNs review described the in-game narration as "a nice touch", but noted some glitches among the otherwise "distinctive engine and horn sounds". Calling the game's sounds exceptional, GameSpots review praised the variety of car noises such as the back-up beeper for the bus.
Groups scaling Mount Hood are recommended to carry an emergency signaling device and all climbers must register before climbing and sign out upon return. The MLU was designed after a school group with two adults and seven children perished on Mount Hood in 1986. (See Mount Hood climbing accidents.) The bodies of some of the group were found in a snow cave a day after the searchers had passed within fifteen feet of their shelter without noticing them. According to Steve Rollins of Portland Mountain Rescue, the units could be worn on a sash across the chest and were relatively light.
This poem was a staple of elementary school readers in the United Kingdom and the United States over a period of about a century spanning, roughly the 1850s through the 1950s. It is today remembered mostly as a tag line and as a topic of parodies. Perhaps to justify its embedding in English-speaking culture, modern editors often claim French poets also celebrated the event - notably André Chenier and Ecouchard Lebrun - apparently without noticing that the former was executed four years before the Battle of the Nile, so could not have written about these events. These claims for literary pedigree appear spurious.
The book combined biographical memories and sociological and philosophical reflections. As a critic of Gorbachev and the restructuring of Zinoviev in March 1990, he was invited to a debate on the French TV channel with "disgraced" Boris Yeltsin, then the Soviet Union People's Deputy, little- known in Europe. Zinoviev criticized Yeltsin's desire to "speed up" the restructuring, said he saw the character of his books in him, and called his promises about the abolition of privileges demagogic and unfulfilled. Pavel Fokin noted that in his assessments Zinoviev hyperbolized Gorbachev's political role in the Soviet Union, without noticing Yeltsin's figure.

Shaviv stated on his blog that he was never interviewed by Solomon and that there were inaccuracies in Solomon's article, but Shaviv did state that global warming happened but he does not believe that it is caused by man.Shaviv, Nir, "On the IPCC's summary for policy makers, and on getting interviewed without noticing", ScienceBits, February 5, 2007, accessed 14 May 2010. Nigel Weiss, "rebutted claims that a fall in solar activity could somehow compensate for the man-made causes of global warming" and The National Post retracted the allegation and published an apology. Solanki and Shaviv were included in Solomon's subsequent book; Weiss was not.
The Jewish Encyclopedia includes a copy of Jellinek 150:22, which is about Solomon flying on a carpet.Jewish Encyclopedia: Solomon The opening lines in this work and in the Quran – especially the ant's words – are almost identical, as can be seen: > (Jellinek) On another day while sailing over a valley where there were many > swarms of ants, > (Quran) Until, when they came upon the Valley of Ants, > (Jellinek) Solomon heard one ant say to the others, Enter your houses; > otherwise Solomon's legions will destroy you. > (Quran) an ant said, O ants! Go into your nests, lest Solomon and his > troops crush you without noticing.
It was hinted in several issues that Ted had a crush on Oracle. Ted had gone back to his company, but still had many, many problems with it; problems Oracle tried to help resolve. During this time, it was revealed he had a heart condition (he had actually experienced multiple heart attacks while in action without noticing),Birds of Prey #39 (March 2002) but this did not stop him from assisting when it was needed. After his death, resulting in trying to impress Oracle, and ending up being shot in the head by Maxwell Lord, the Birds of Prey visited a statue in Valhalla Cemetery built in his honor.
Winnie-the-Pooh, a bear living in the Hundred Acre Wood, is disappointed to find that he is out of honey. He hears a bee fly by and decides to climb a nearby honey tree, but as he reaches the beehive, a branch he is sitting on breaks, causing him to fall into a gorse bush below. Pooh's best friend, Christopher Robin, gives Pooh a balloon and he tries to trick the bees by disguising himself as a Little Black Rain Cloud by rolling in a mud puddle and floating up to the beehive. He pulls out some honey and eats it without noticing that it is covered in bees.
Fangio chases down Collins The pit stop was a disaster; the mechanic removing the rear left wheel let the wheel nut roll under the car without noticing, and finding it took nearly half a minute. Fangio left the pit lane in third place, and 48 seconds behind Collins who was in second place. But in his Maserati 250F he began to mount a charge. Over the next 10 laps, Fangio broke and rebroke the lap record 9 times (7 of the records were in successive laps) and he took 15.5 seconds off Hawthorn's lead in the first lap, then another 8.5 seconds in the next lap.
A (comparatively) small white ball labeled Supply Satellite No.1 is hit with a very strong spring and shot into space. Immediately, "baggage" is deposited out of a machine and one of the packages is a large chunk of cheese, which attracts Jerry. He gets in his vehicle and goes after what he saw on his monitor, but soon breaks a beam without noticing.

His experience led him in later years to be disillusioned with Zionism, stating in an interview with Ari Shavit: > I went to Kibbutz Hanikra in the 1950s and experienced the transcendent > feeling of working in the banana groves without noticing that in order to > plant the banana trees, I was uprooting olive trees, thousands of years old, > of a Palestinian village. During that whole period ... I did not understand > the meaning of what I was doing. But when I started to deal with the Arabs > of East Jerusalem, I began to understand. I saw that the problem is not only > the individual rights of the Palestinians but also their collective rights.
The story of the accusation of adultery levied against Aisha, also known as the Event of Ifk, can be traced to sura (chapter) An-Nur of the Qur'an. As the story goes, Aisha left her howdah in order to search for a missing necklace. Her slaves mounted the howdah and prepared it for travel without noticing any difference in weight without Aisha's presence. Hence the caravan accidentally departed without her. She remained at the camp until the next morning, when Safwan ibn al-Mu‘attal, a nomad and member of Muhammad's army, found her and brought her back to Muhammad at the army's next camp.
Despite the recent events, club president Refik Halili confirmed that Memelli will continue to be part of the team. From Nine to Nine or Between Nine and Nine (German title: Zwischen neun und neun; original title: Freiheit) is a novel by Leo Perutz first published in 1918. It is about a turbulent day in the life of an impoverished student in Imperial Vienna. The commission of a desperate crime at the beginning of the novel triggers a chain reaction during which the protagonist is thrown into a series of grotesque situations while all around him people carry on with their normal lives without noticing anything out of the ordinary. Originally serialized in various newspapers in Prague, Vienna, and Berlin, From Nine to Nine became a very popular book and was translated into eight languages during the 1920s.
The police arrive and arrest Scheitz for armed robbery without noticing Bruno. Holding a large frozen turkey from the store and the shotgun, Bruno returns to the garage where he works, loads the tow truck with beer, and drives along a highway into the mountains. Upon entering a small town, the truck breaking down, Bruno pulls over to a restaurant, where he tells his story to a German-speaking businessman. He then starts the truck, leaves it circling in the parking lot with a fire taking hold in the engine compartment and goes into a tourist trap across the street, where he starts a ski-lift and rides it with his frozen turkey.
Close-up of star near a supermassive black hole (artist's impression). The point at which tidal forces destroy an object or kill a person will depend on the black hole's size. For a supermassive black hole, such as those found at a galaxy's center, this point lies within the event horizon, so an astronaut may cross the event horizon without noticing any squashing and pulling, although it remains only a matter of time, as once inside an event horizon, falling towards the center is inevitable. Extract of page 253 For small black holes whose Schwarzschild radius is much closer to the singularity, the tidal forces would kill even before the astronaut reaches the event horizon.
Occasionally a hose bursts due to immediate or accumulated damage, and a low pressure hose burst can empty a cylinder in a few minutes to seconds depending on the contents of the cylinder, while also making the remaining gas unavailable to the diver. Unrecoverable free-flows are rare, but occasionally occur, and regulator freeze can cause a free-flow which can only be stopped by closing the cylinder valve. More commonly, a diver will use up all the gas without noticing until the pressure is critically low. A common complication of loss of breathing gas supply is that the same gas supply is routinely used for breathing and buoyancy control in recreational scuba diving.
According to Stuart Hall, representation is largely how people form their identities, which becomes problematic when the representations are not empowering. It has also been said that stereotypes cannot benefit the people they reference, because even if the stereotype is perceived as positive, normalizing one stereotype may reinforce other, less positive stereotypes. For example, people who hear a stereotype about African Americans being good at athletics actually have stronger negative perspectives on black people than did those who heard negative stereotypes. This may be because while many people will identify and dismiss a harmful-sounding stereotype, they may accept a positive one without noticing it, and this may subsequently reinforce their acceptance of other stereotypes.
The defenders, unaware of the location and intentions of the imperial column, discovered the tracks of the Brazilian advance and began preparations for the defense. On the Cerro de la Caballada, the republican militias led by Second Lieutenant Sebastián Olivera and the gauchos of the baqueano José Luis Molina caught up with them and immediately presented battle. With the first shots the Brazilian commander Shepherd fell dead, who was supplanted by Guillermo Eyre. Soon they were surrounded by guerrillas who proceeded to encircle the Imperials, setting fire to the vegetation, a fact that forced Eyre to order the withdrawal to the ships, without noticing that they were already taken over by the Argentines.
He passed thus in the middle of the crowd, without noticing the effect it produced, and without suspecting that it was going to be an extended theme for the officers' conversations and lazzi." Eugène-Emmanuel Amaury-Duval, Souvenirs (1829-1830), Librairie Plon, E. Plon, Nourrit et Cie, printer-publishers, Paris, 1885. Thus, the members of this section each left in different directions, with Dubois failing to impose his authority and to prevent them doing so, a fact that elicited rather sarcastic comments from Baron Georges Cuvier, the Commissioner of the Academie who was supervising the "competing" Physical Sciences section.A letter from Cuvier, dated 15 April 1829 reads: "My section is still compact and working.
Viva Hate was generally well received by critics. Rolling Stone called the album "a tight, fairly disciplined affair", in comparison of its sound to that of The Smiths. In its retrospective review, Pitchfork called the album "one of Morrissey's most interesting records, and certainly his riskiest", and that its "strange mix of pomp and minimal languor makes Viva Hate the only Morrissey LP you'd consider listening to just for its music". A negative review came from Spin, who wrote "without guitarist/composer Johnny Marr at his side, the mahatma of mope rock seems to have gone out for a nice depressing stroll without noticing that he didn't have a stitch to wear".
Washington's Temperance Fountain (lower right corner) for years sat in front of the Apex Liquor Store, housed in the Central National Bank Building. In 1987, it was relocated about 100 feet north during the renewal by the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation, since the statue was regarded as undesirable from the start. The PADC created Indiana Plaza, and the Temperance Fountain swapped locations with the monument to the Grand Army of the Republic, which was considered historically more significant. Today the fountain sits at the corner of Seventh Street and Indiana Avenue, NW, across from the National Archives and Navy Memorial, where thousands of tourists and workers walk past daily without noticing it.
The plot of the novel is Drogo's lifelong wait for a great war in which his life and the existence of the fort can prove its usefulness. The human need for giving life meaning and the soldier's desire for glory are themes in the novel. Drogo is posted to the remote outpost overlooking a desolate Tartar desert; he spends his career waiting for the barbarian horde rumored to live beyond the desert. Without noticing, Drogo finds that in his watch over the fort he has let years and decades pass and that, while his old friends in the city have had children, married, and lived full lives, he has come away with nothing except solidarity with his fellow soldiers in their long, patient vigil.
On April 14, 2008, Boris Casoy returned to national television on Rede Bandeirantes as the main anchor for its nightly newscast, Jornal da Noite. Casoy also presents the news in Rede Bandeirantes' radio news network, BandNews FM. In 2010, Casoy was involved in a scandal: after a TV news broadcast in which two street sweepers appeared offering season's greetings, he offered a private comment during commercials, without noticing that the audio channel was inadvertently open: "Shit, two garbage men offering greetings from atop their brooms... the lowest rung of the working ladder." – a comment for which he had to apologize in public.Folha de S.Paulo, 1 January 2010, available at On September 30, 2016, Casoy left Band's nightly news program Jornal da Noite.
They stop and notice the two girls inside, but the girls immediately speed off without noticing they are driving off with the robbers stolen money. In confusion the robbers are arrested by police. The girls then enjoy their joyride through the country roads until they are pursued by two Main Force Patrol (MFP) officers in a yellow interceptor that resembles to the ones used in the opening chase sequence of the original Mad Max. Ever since it has come into use, the term has referred to the specific lifestyles, behaviors, habits, and other characteristics that have no specific relation to economic status or ethnicity, but that somehow became factors of the phenomenon when these lifestyles and habits required certain aspects that only can be found in an upper class circle. Although, it is not critically necessary because belonging to a fresa group pertains to the way one thinks and acts. People that call themselves "fresas", are usually not part of it, but rather a false attempt to belong in that group. That is to say, 'authentic' fresas do not exist, although some people naturally think, behave, and act the stereotype without noticing it, and they find it completely normal.
Beebe and his team began work there in 1945, staying as guests of the Venezuelan government. Rancho Grande was located at a mountain pass in a branch of the Andes known as the Venezuelan Coastal Range, which was an important migration route for butterflies, and the station proved very lucrative in the study of insects. During his work at Rancho Grande, Beebe broke his leg in a fall from a ladder, and the forced immobility which resulted from having his leg in a cast presented him with a new opportunity for observing the area's wildlife. At his request, he and his chair were transported into the nearby jungle, and as he sat motionless the wild animals around him soon began to go about their business without noticing his presence.
Moth snowstorms occurred when moths congregated with such density that they could appear like a blizzard in the beam of automobile headlights. A 2019 survey by Mongabay of 24 entomologists working on six continents found that on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the worst, all the scientists rated the severity of the insect decline crisis as being between 8–10. The windshield phenomenon – car windscreens covered in dead insects after even a short drive through a rural area in Europe and North America – seems also largely to have disappeared; in the 21st century, drivers find they can go an entire summer without noticing it. John Rawlins, head of invertebrate zoology at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, speculated in 2006 that more aerodynamic car designs could explain the change.
Aside from physical proximity, the Plantations has affiliations with a number of Cornell academic departments. In fact, during the latter part of the 20th century, public gardens attached to colleges and universities such as the Plantations became a popular trend, due to the beneficial effects they had on campus unity and recruitment of students, creating bonds with and outreach to the local community, and providing a basis for ongoing research as well as establishing a living museum. The Plantations earned a relatively brief mention as a campus diversion in the 112-page Cornell Desk Book publication of 1972 aimed at incoming students. The Cornell Daily Sun listed it in 2010 as one of the natural wonders of the Cornell and Ithaca areas that students frequently went past, or lived near to, without noticing.
The tale is notably retold by Swedish author Selma Lagerlöf as Bortbytingen in her 1915 book Troll och människor The tale is notably retold by Swedish children's story author Helena Nyblom as Bortbytingarna in the 1913 book Bland tomtar och troll. (which is depicted by the image), a princess is kidnapped by trolls and replaced with their own offspring against the wishes of the troll mother. The changelings grow up with their new parents, but both find it hard to adapt: the human girl is disgusted by her future bridegroom, a troll prince, whereas the troll girl is bored by her life and by her dull human future groom. Upset with the conditions of their lives, they both go astray in the forest, passing each other without noticing it.
The typical outcome of breast reconstruction surgery is a breast mound with a pleasing aesthetic shape, with a texture similar to a natural breast, but which feels completely or mostly numb for the woman herself. This loss of sensation, called somatosensory loss or the inability to perceive touch, heat, cold, and pain, sometimes results in women burning themselves or injuring themselves without noticing, or not noticing that their clothing has shifted to expose their breasts. "I can't even feel it when my kids hug me," said one mother, who had nipple-sparing breast reconstruction after a bilateral mastectomy. The loss of sensation has long-term medical consequences, because it makes the affected women unable to feel itchy rashes, infected sores, cuts, bruises, or situations that risk sunburns or frostbite on the affected areas.
Gowasu (ゴワス), known as Gowas in the manga, is the ruling Supreme Kai of Universe 10. At some point in time in the past, Gowasu chose Zamasu, the North Kai of Universe 10, to be his successor based on his battle talent, a decision he would later regret as he chose an apprentice without noticing the potential for evil within him. Unlike many of his peers from the other Universes, he does not resent Goku or view him as being disrespectful, as he is the only deity outside of Universe 6 and Universe 7 who actually knows him on a personal level. Gowasu, along with his counterpart from Universe 7, traveled to an alternate future world where Zamasu has ravaged the world to assist Goku and his associates in dealing with his former apprentice.
So, he alternated his military duties with his public performances and TV performances. In 1972, due to the success of a song written by him, he co- starred in the film Me enamoré sin darme cuenta (I fell in love without noticing it) with Alicia Bruzzo and Luis Brandoni, directed by Fernando Siro. On 31 July 1974 he sang in the Teatro Opera, being the first pop/ballad singer to perform in that prestigious theatre. His performance was backed up by a 36 musicians-orchestra directed by Jorge Calandrelli. In 1975 Denis broke free from CBS Columbia, and in mid-1976 he recorded a sole album for a small recording company named TK. The following year he was signed by PolyGram (now Universal); with this company Denis recorded most of his greatest hits until July 1990.
As told in Le Morte d'Arthur, witnessing some of these wonders cause Bors to name it the Castle Adventurous, "for here be many strange adventures" (Morte, Caxton XI). Yet it can also appear quite ordinary: on an earlier occasion, according to the Lancelot-Grail, the same Bors visited without noticing anything unusual. (Perhaps conscious of this apparent contradiction, T.H. White in his modern The Once and Future King treats Corbenic as two separate places: Corbin is the relatively mundane dwelling-place of King Pelles, while Carbonek is the mystical castle where the climax of the Grail Quest takes place.) Corbenic has a town, and a bridge which Bromell la Pleche swears to defend against all comers for a year, for love of Pelles' daughter Elaine (Morte, Caxton XI-XII). It is on the coast, or at least is mystically moved there for the purposes of the Grail Quest: Lancelot arrives at Corbenic by sea at the climax of his personal quest.
Countdown sought to benefit from the closure of TV21 and the consequent availability of the licence to publish strips based on Gerry Anderson's Supermarionation TV shows, which had been popular throughout the 1960s. So the comic featured a strip based on the latest Gerry Anderson TV programme, the live-action series UFO, along with reprints of strips from TV21 based on the earlier Anderson successes Stingray, Thunderbirds and Fireball XL5, in addition to some original material. However, Polystyle Publications had only taken into account the fact that TV21 had been discontinued, which they looked upon merely as an opportunity to acquire the licence to use the Anderson shows, without noticing that the popularity of the puppet-based strips in TV21 had drastically declined because those shows were no longer in production, and were no longer being seen on TV every week. Furthermore, the expense of the high-quality paper and photogravure quality printing, needed for the colour pages and photo features, pushed the cover price up.

Inspiration for 3D Slash came from kids playing on Minecraft and the easy way they develop sophisticated 3D models without noticing it. However, 3D Slash is specifically meant for designing 3D printable objects, in relation with the stone-cutter metaphor. Therefore, it provides an original 3D Slash toolset such as : \- the hammer (to remove a cuboid) \- the trowel (to add a cuboid) \- the chisel (to remove slices of cuboids) \- the brush (to set the color of cuboids) \- the wood filler (to add a slice of cuboids) \- the milling machine (to remove adjacent cuboids volume) \- picture projection on cuboid (to help cutting your object out according to the picture shape) 3D Slash app offers complementary advanced tools : \- complex geometrical shapes to handle (cylinder, sphere or cone) \- the bucket (to fill in with cuboid an identified volume) \- cut / copy / paste functions \- Therefore, curved shapes (cylinder, sphere, cone) are also approximated by the small cuboids of the octree. 3D Slash particularity is also based on its .STL files (standard 3D Printing file format) import / export function.

It was also used to describe the Finnish stubbornness in sticking to its loose alliance with The Third Reich from 1941 to 1944 (in the war against the Soviet Union, which had attacked Finland on 30 November 1939): During the 1952 Summer Olympics, sisu was further described in the context of the continuing Cold War looming over the Finnish capital city of Helsinki: Well into the 1960s, sisu was used to describe the Finnish resistance to the invasion of 20 to 30 years prior and its continuing discontents. In 1960, Austin Goodrich's book, Study in Sisu: Finland's Fight for Independence, was published by Ballantine. Also in 1960, a notable reviewer of Griffin Taylor's novel, Mortlake, wrote: In 2004, Jorma Ollila, CEO of Nokia, described his company's "guts" by using the word sisu: A Finnish heavy metal rock singer injured himself, without noticing, at a concert, to which a reviewer wrote: The concept is widely known in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which is home to a large concentration of Americans of Finnish descent.
