The majority of its members were Macedonian Bulgarians. In 1903, IMRO organised the Ilinden–Preobrazhenie Uprising against the Ottomans, which after some initial successes, including the forming of the Kruševo Republic, was crushed with much loss of life.There was even an attempt to form a kind of revolutionary government led by the socialist Nikola Karev.

In 1872 Wadsley Grove was purchased by John Marples, a wine merchant who acquired the "Wine and Spirit Commercial Hotel" on the corner of Fitzalan Square, Sheffield. Later known as the Marples Hotel, it was destroyed by bombing in December 1940 with much loss of life. Sheffield's first ever female Lord Mayor Ann Eliza Longden, who was elected in 1936, lived at Wadsley Grove. Equestrian statues of Slocum are located at Steven's Knoll and Culp's Hill, Gettysburg battlefield (dedicated on September 19, 1902), and in Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn, New York (dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1905). A steamship, the General Slocum, was named for him; it had a disastrous fire on board in 1904 with much loss of life. Fort Slocum, New York, guarded the entrance to New York Harbor from Long Island Sound from 1867 to 1965 when it was deactivated by the US Army. It was officially named Fort Slocum in 1896.

The Arctic left port on 20 September, which is sometimes (erroneously) given as the date of the collision. in conditions of poor visibility, the Arctic collided with the French steamer Vesta, and sank with much loss of life, including Catherwood. Mysteriously Catherwood's name was left off the official casualty lists for weeks until a concerted effort by his friends and colleagues resulted in a belated inclusion of a single line in the New York Herald Tribune, under the listing of "The Saved and the Lost: Mr Catherwood Also is Missing". He was 55 years old.

Battle of Vinegar HillRouse Hill is noteworthy in Australian history as the site of the main battle during an Irish rebellion, known as the Castle Hill rebellion or the second Battle of Vinegar Hill. On 4 March 1804, Irish convicts including political prisoners transported for participating in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, broke out of the Government Farm at Castle Hill, aiming to seize control of the area and to capture Parramatta. The uprising was crushed by the military authorities at Rouse Hill the following day with much loss of life.

British troops in the colony quickly put down the rebellion and forced Papineau to flee to the United States. A second rebellion by the Frères chasseurs of Robert Nelson broke out one year later, but the British put it down as well, with much loss of life and destruction of property. William Lyon Mackenzie, a Scottish immigrant and reformist mayor of York (Toronto), organized the Upper Canada Rebellion in December 1837 after the Patriotes rebellion had begun. Upper Canadians had similar grievances; they were annoyed at the undemocratic governance of the colony, and especially by the corrupt and inefficient Bank of Upper Canada and the Canada Company.

Loring served as a sub-lieutenant on the royal yacht Victoria and Albert in 1891. As a lieutenant he was aboard HMS Victoria when she was rammed and sunk by HMS Camperdown off Tripoli on 22 June 1893 with much loss of life, and was awarded a bronze medal by the Royal Humane Society for saving two lives. In 1896, he qualified as a torpedo lieutenant and joined the staff of HMS Defiance, the schoolship, at Devonport, where he was among the first to specialize in wireless telegraphy. He was put in charge of Admiralty shore wireless stations, and in 1904 selected to accompany Guglielmo Marconi to America for wireless experiments.
