In the spring of 1946, three young men decided to found a new sports club in Oulu. At the constitutional meeting on May 15, 1946, the club was named "Oulun Kärpät 46". At first, Kärpät played football (soccer) and its first winter sport was bandy. In the first annual meeting in January 1947, an ice hockey section was established.

In 1993, a new league, the Continental Indoor Soccer League (CISL) began its first season. Traditionally, indoor soccer has been a winter sport, but the CISL decided to play a summer season. The first winter sport to be contested at the modern Olympic Games was figure skating at the 1908 Games in London. A total of 21 skaters from six countries (Argentina, Germany, Great Britain, Sweden, Russia, and the United States) competed in four events on 28–29 October. Boardercross, also known as "Boarder X" and "Snowboard X", is a very popular but relatively recent winter sport, starting in the 1980s and earning its place as an official Winter Olympic sport in the 2006 Turin games. In Boardercross, several riders (usually 4 to 6) race down a course similar to a motorcycle motocross track (with jumps, berms and other obstacles constructed out of snow on a downhill course). Unlike traditional head-to-head races, competitors use the same terrain, sometimes resulting in accidental collisions.

National Bandy Association was the first English governing body for the team winter sport of bandy, and actually the first bandy governing body anywhere in the world. The association was founded in 1891. The first general rules for bandy were written down by Englishman Charles Goodman Tebbutt in 1882. Savalen is a lake in Innlandet country, Norway, in the municipalities Tynset and Alvdal, about 18 square kilometres. The river Sivilla, which connects Savalen and Glomma, is regulated and exploited by the Savalen hydropower station (62 MW). Burkart was approached by Swiss bobsledder Christian Meili and sprinter-turned-bobsledder René Mangold in 1995 and they urged him to try out the winter sport. He competed in the Swiss team in 4-man bobsleigh at the Bobsleigh European Championship and Bobsleigh World Cup from 1998 to 2002. Burkart soon began to focus on training younger bobsledders and athletes in the late 1990s with Fredi Steinmann. Kieran Hansen (born 16 November 1971 in Sydney) is an Australian short track speed skater who competed in the 1992 Winter Olympics, in the 1994 Winter Olympics, and in the 1998 Winter Olympics. In 1991, Hansen was part of the Australian quartet that won the 5,000 m relay at the World Championships in 1991 in Sydney. It was the first time that Australia had won a World Championship in a winter sport. Australia's short track relay team went into the 1992 Olympics as world champions, but the team crashed in the semi- finals.

Rhigos RFC were formed by the local cricket team that decided they needed a winter sport to allow them to continue playing when the cricket season ended. A vote was made between members on whether to choose rugby or football, and rugby won by a single vote and the club was created. During the 1937/38 season the club won the Pontypridd and District cup beating Rhydyfelin RFC 3-0. Originally playing on the Gwrangon Field, they moved temporarily to Mount Road, before changing grounds again to Newth's Field.

Four figure skating events were contested at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, but they were held in October 1908, six months after most of the other Olympic events at the 1908 Games. The figure skating competition took place at the Prince's Skating Club, in the district of Knightsbridge. It was the first time that a winter sport had ever been included in the Olympic Games, sixteen years before the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix. The number of competitors was very low, with two events having only three entrants, guaranteeing a medal for participation.

From 1887 until 1928 a rack railway, the Gaisbergbahn, provided easy access from the city to the top of the mountain until it was replaced in 1929 by a road. John Kah (born 22 July 1968 in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia) is a former Australian short track speed skater, who represented Australia at the 1992 Winter Olympics in the relay team. In 1991, Kah was part of the Australian quartet that won the 5,000m relay at the World Championships in 1991 in Sydney. It was the first time that Australia had won a World Championship in a winter sport. Australia's short track relay team went into the 1992 Olympics as world champion, but crashed in the semi-finals.

The valley is drained via the Bodenbach, which flows over the Tschauko waterfall in the Tscheppa Gorge. Having one of the most beautiful valley closures of the Limestone Alps, the formerly agricultural 4 km-long mountain valley has developed into a popular leisure area. In summer there is hiking – for example in the nature reserve or to the Klagenfurter Hütte mountain hut. In winter, the valley is one of the few winter sport regions of the Karavanks with ski slope, cross-country skiing, winter hiking and sleigh riding.

Baseball was again a demonstration sport at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. Though it was nominally the "foreign" demonstration sport of that Olympiad, Australia had a long history of baseball dating back to at least 1889. She worked in the Charlotte Pass ski fields for the NSW Ski Association after leaving school. This was the start of her long career of assisting athletes with a disability. Whilst at Charlotte Pass, she became involved with Disabled Winter Sport Australia and met Ron Finneran. In 1977, she became executive director of New South Wales Ski Association and two years later took on a similar role at the Australian Ski Federation. She acknowledges that Ron Finneran, Australia’s first winter Paralympian, played a significant role in educating her in the area of disability sport.

English bandy developed as a winter sport in the Fens of East Anglia. Large expanses of ice would form on the flooded meadows or shallow washes in cold winters, and skating has been a tradition. Members of the Bury Fen Bandy Club published rules of the game in 1882, and introduced it into other countries. The sport was one sports people with disabilities were more likely to participate in during the 1990s. During the 1990s, there were conversations about whether or not less-disabled wintersport athletes should be competing in disability winter sport and if they should instead be competing against able bodied competitors. A bobsled roller coaster is a roller coaster that uses a track design that is essentially a "pipe" with the top half removed and has cars that are sent down this pipe in a freewheeling mode. The name derives from the great similarity to the track design used for the winter sport of bobsleigh. Most modern bobsled roller coasters are made of steel; however, the first bobsled coasters, known as Flying Turns, were made of wood. On Oct 4, 2013, after seven years of construction, Knoebels in Pennsylvania opened the world's only modern wooden flying turns coaster, Flying Turns.

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) was founded in London on 2 July 1993. This occurred when the National Biathlon Union in London/Heathrow decided to exclude biathlon from the World federation UIPMB (Union de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon), which it had been part of since 1953, forcing biathlon to form their own international federation. During the congress the new federation elected their executive committee and the 57 existing members of the UIPMB were automatically transferred to the IBU. Crokicurl is a Canadian winter sport invented by Liz Wreford and Leanne Muir of Public City Architecture and first played in Winnipeg, Canada. The game is a large scale hybrid of curling and the board game Crokinole. Crokinole is a game in which the players take turn to flick small discs on a circular board, to score highest depending on where the disc lands on the board where the regions are marked with score. In the crokicurl version of the game, rocks are used instead of discs which are roughly the size of a curling stone.

In October 28, 2008, Calgary was chosen, among nine Canadian cities, to permanently host Canada's Sports Hall of Fame (CSHOF). The foundation and construction of the new facility was laid on donated land by the former Calgary Olympic Development Association (CODA), now called the Canadian Winter Sport Institute or WinSport Canada. The cost of the project was C$50 million (about C$30 million was used to build the venue; another C$20 million for operating costs, through an endowment fund). It was opened to the general public on July 1, 2011, to coincide with the Canada Day festivities.

Students from Oxford and Cambridge went there to play each other; the predecessor of the recurring Ice Hockey Varsity Match was a bandy match played in St. Moritz in 1885. Jason Robinson In 1996, rugby union had gone open, allowing professional players for the first time, and rugby league changed from a winter sport to a summer sport, so a number of league players chose to play part of a season for a rugby union club. At the conclusion of the 1976 Winter Paralympics, Ron Finneran was offered a scholarship to live and study at a local university in Örnsköldsvik. He remained there until 1978 where he was involved in developing an alpine ski program for the disabled. In 1978 Ron returned to Australia filled with determination to rectify for future Australian disabled athletes the issues that he had at the 1976 games. He accepted a position as a ski instructor at the Thredbo Ski School where he met fellow ski instructor, Bruce Abel, with whom he co-founded the Disabled Skiing Federation - now known as Disabled Winter Sport Australia (DWSA).

The Ice Skating Association of India (ISAI) is the national governing body for competitive ice skating disciplines, including figure skating, synchronized skating, speed skating, and short track speed skating in India. The ISAI is affiliated to the International Skating Union, and the Asian Skating Union. Ice hockey is a contact team sport played on ice, usually in a rink, in which two teams of skaters use their sticks to shoot a vulcanized rubber puck into their opponent's net to score goals. The sport is known to be fast-paced and physical, with teams usually fielding six players at a time: one goaltender, and five players who skate the span of the ice trying to control the puck and score goals against the opposing team. Ice hockey is most popular in Canada, central and eastern Europe, the Nordic countries, Russia, and the United States. Ice hockey is the official national winter sport of Canada.

He then became head coach of Australia's Winter Paralympic team for the 1994 Winter Paralympics, 2006 Winter Paralympics, 2010 Winter Paralympics and the 2014 Winter Paralympics. In 2003, he was named the Australian Paralympic Committee’s Winter Paralympic Program head coach, and in 2010 signed a four-year deal to remain on in the position. , Graham is the current head coach of the Australian Paralympic Committee's Winter Paralympic program. The power of television over sport can perhaps be best portrayed by the change of rugby league from a winter sport to one played during the summer months under the banner of Super League. These changes caused great controversy when they were introduced in 1996, yet they have been seen as positive and as having an impact even greater than the broadcaster has had with football. The sport is now seen as being in a healthy state with two or three live matches from the Super League every week fronted by Brian Carney who is joined in the studio by Terry O'Connor, Phil Clarke, Barrie McDermott or Stuart Cummings. The predecessor of the LHF, the Latvian Winter Sport Union (, LZSS) was founded in 1926, although until 1931 it focused on the promotion of bandy instead of ice hockey. After the start of the Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1940, the LZSS was dissolved by Soviet authorities, although it was suspended from the IIHF only in 1946. After the restoration of the independence of Latvia, the Latvian Hockey Federation was established in 1991 and re-admitted to the IIHF during its congress in Prague on May 6, 1992. However, the Latvian national men's team was not restored back to the top division and had to play in Group C in its first World Championships since 1939.

Boulder City high school's flag football team is notable for the dominating program and state championship in 2015. Flag football became a CCSD girls sport in the 2012-2013 school year as a winter sport. Unlike other sports, flag football was based on location and region, not by student population. This caused a disadvantage to smaller schools having to play larger schools in the same bracket for the CCSD title. The first season the lady eagles barely missed a play off spot ending with a record of 8-10. In the returning season of 2013-2014, the lady eagles returned 9 varsity players and came back with an undefeated regular season of 18-0 to take the Southeast title.

Houston has one major league winter sport against which the XFL economically competes, the NBA's Houston Rockets.

Prior to the 1924 Winter Olympics, the winter sports of Figure skating and Ice hockey had been contested in the Summer Olympics. The creation of the first winter games allowed for many athletes of the era to compete in both sets of games in the same discipline, and on this page these athletes are listed below the main list. The Russian athlete Nikolai Panin is unique in having competed in both a summer sport (shooting in 1912) and a winter sport (figure skating in 1908) but only competing at the Summer Olympics.

The Peak Performance King of Style is a big air contest for freestyle skiers with a global reputation for its big jump and world class starting field. The event attracts an audience from all over the world, both live TV crowds and up to 25,000 spectators at the stadium. In 2009 the contest gathered 24 of the best skiers at Stockholm Olympic Stadium to crown the Peak performance King of Style. King of Style is part of the Stadium Winter Jam which also includes a big air contest for snowboarders, the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup, as well as a winter sport exhibition, a rail arena open for the public and lots more.

Photographic evidence of rugby at Muir College exists from as early as 1893, while Grey High School record their first ever game as played against the Muir Academy in 1894. Headmaster John Mitchell had recorded in his diary on the 13th of April 1893 that “a meeting of pupils to decide on the football club was held.” Unfortunately this teething period of rugby came to an abrupt end in 1897 when new headmaster John Sutherland introduced soccer as the winter sport. Rugby was reintroduced in only 1923, and performances climaxed in 1931 with the 1st XV of that year recording 9 wins and 2 draws out of 14 matches to show that Muir College rugby had finally arrived.

The design was largely deemed to be aesthetically unpleasing by both students and staff, although it did allow them access to twice as much land as they had had at Crittal's Corner. Opening in 1954, it was officially opened in a ceremony led by the Lord Lieutenant of Kent and the Bishop of Rochester. As part of the move, in September 1954 it had been decided that the school houses would be renamed as Davies, Edlmann, Williams, Staff, Townshend, and Lester, all figures who had played a prominent role in the school's history. The move also saw a change in the school's winter sport from football to rugby, although cricket remained the school's summer sport.

From 1992 to 2018, Hall has served as the Chairman of Disability Snowsport UK (DSUK, with subsidiary British Parasnowsport), a charity originally providing winter-sport holidays for people with Cerebral Palsy. In 1995 Hall wrote and delivered a business plan to underpin the development of the sport nationally for people with all disabilities and to create a grass- roots to elite sport programme. The plan included building a centre on Cairngorm that was integrated in the Cairngorm Mountain Centre development opened in 2000. British Parasnowsport were responsible for identifying potential Para-olympians and were successful in achieving podium medal status in Söchi and PyeongChang, bringing home Team GB's first Alpine gold medals.

In its January 1909 issue, The Michigan Alumnus announced: "For the first time in the history of the University there is to be a varsity basketball team. Realizing the demand for an indoor winter sport and the presence of good material in college, the athletic authorities passed a resolution providing for a basketball team and granted them a schedule of seven or eight games for the season." The Alumnus observed that basketball had become "almost a major sport" in many leading colleges, and its recognition as a varsity sport at Michigan was "greeted with approval by students and alumni alike." Head coach George Corneal had difficulty finding players who were eligible for the team.

As hockey originates as an outdoor winter sport where players wore sweaters, this terminology has been retained to describe what is probably the most recognized element of a team's equipment (which is the only element which is mass marketed to the public). Most NHL sweaters (jerseys) display the team's primary logo in the center of the chest, while some also display secondary logos on the shoulders. Each player in a team's lineup for a game must have a different number displayed on the back of their sweater, as well as the player's surname above their number on the back of their sweater. While not required, teams typically place their numbers on each upper arm as well.

In order to be admitted to the Olympic program, the IOC Session has to approve its inclusion. There are many sports that easily make the required numbers but are not recognized as Olympic sports, mainly because the IOC has decided to put a limit on the number of sports, as well as events and athletes, in the Summer Olympics in order not to increase them from the 28 sports, 300 events, and 10,000 athletes of the 2000 Summer Olympics. No such limits exist in the Winter Olympics and the number of events and athletes continue to increase, but no sport has been added since 1998. The latest winter sport added to the Winter Olympics was curling in 1998.

After retiring from competitive skiing, Wasmeier founded the farm and winter sport museum Bauernhof- und Wintersportmuseum Schliersee on May 1, 2007, and he has remained its curator and patron ever since. The museum provides insight into traditional Bavarian peasant life and aims to preserve old traditions by communicating them to coming generations. In 2009, Wasmeier shared his passion for building restoration and preserving tradition with an international group of young people through his involvement with the D&F; Academy (now The DO School). Wasmeier worked with an international group of young people to restore a 17th-century farmhouse in the German Alps utilizing original materials, traditional tools, wood-crafting and handicraft techniques.

The flood risk also declined due to the raising of the line, although not on all sections of the line. However, the creation of a profitable basis for freight transport and improvements in passenger services were more important. For Deutsche Reichsbahn, the railway was the "new gateway to the eastern Ore Mountains", which made the Altenberg winter sport region "a sports ground at the gates of the national capital".

Brattleboro sees a substantial seasonal influx of recreational skiers and snowboarders, many of them bound for the resorts at nearby Mount Snow and Stratton, but it is also a winter sports destination in and of itself. The town played an important role in the development and popularization of the skiing industry as a winter sport, with pioneering Brattleboro native and Dartmouth College alumnus Fred Harris, founder of the Dartmouth Outing Club (1909–10), also establishing the Brattleboro Outing Club (in 1922), contributing to the first North American use of motor-driven ski lifts, and building the Harris Hill olympic-scale ski jumping facility, the site of international competitions every February that still attract daring ski-jumping athletes from all over the world.

Cortina d'Ampezzo (, ; , ; ; Historical ), commonly referred to as Cortina, is a town and comune in the heart of the southern (Dolomitic) Alps in the Veneto region of Northern Italy. Situated on the Boite river, in an alpine valley, it is a winter sport resort known for its skiing trails, scenery, accommodation, shops and après-ski scene, and for its jet set and Italian aristocratic crowd. In the Middle Ages, Ampezzo fell under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Aquileia and of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1420 it was conquered by the Republic of Venice. It then spent much of its history under Austrian rule, briefly undergoing some territorial changes under Napoleon, before being returned to Austria, who held it until 1918.

Lawrence moved to Adelaide in South Australia when he was only 4 after his father Marty, was posted to the Edinburgh RAAF base in the cities northern suburbs. His family settled in the newly built northern suburb of Andrews Farm and Brenton went on to attend Smithfield Plains High School. After ignoring calls from his primary school friends to play Australian rules football (the leading winter sport in Adelaide), Lawrence began playing rugby league at the age of nine for the northern Adelaide based club Central Districts Roosters in the South Australian Rugby League. He attributes this decision to his league-loving dad, and because of rugby league's advertising campaign which at the time was led by international pop music artist Tina Turner and her hit song Simply The Best.

The earliest classification systems for the sport were developed in Scandinavia. Classification for winter sport started out as a medical one before moving to a functional system. The original classification system was for amputees, with classification based on the type of amputation as determined by a medical expert. Other classes of disability were not eligible to compete. During the 1970s, equipment was developed for skiers with spinal injuries and a classification system had yet to become fully developed for the sport. Compatangelo covered the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where he was one of four managers on shift to supervise 500 workers assigned to the International Broadcast Centre. His last Olympics were the 2012 Summer Olympics in London where he worked at the CONI headquarters. At the 2002 World Winter Sport Games, rival men's singles skaters Chazz Michael Michaels, a skillful skater but raunchy sex addict, and Jimmy MacElroy, an equally talented but sheltered and effeminate skater, tie for gold. From the start, the two skaters are clear polar opposites with different backgrounds; Chazz grew up on the streets and is a self-taught skater, while Jimmy was adopted by Darren MacElroy, a wealthy man who adopts children showing exceptional athletic ability. While standing on the awards podium after both skaters tie for gold, the two have an argument that escalates into a fight and ends with the World Games mascot being accidentally set on fire. As a result, the National Figure Skating Association strips both men of their medals and bans them from competitive skating for life.

Moseley and England captain J. F. Byrne c1900 Moseley was founded in 1873 by members of Havelock Cricket Club who wanted a winter sport when the cricket season had finished. The club debuted its signature red and black colours one year later. The Reddings was leased by the club in 1880 and the club was traditionally called, like many rugby football clubs from either code, simply "Moseley Football Club" (a signpost from Alcester Road along Reddings Road in Moseley, erected by Birmingham City Council, pointed to "Moseley F.C. (R.U.)". This sign has now been re-erected by the main entrance to the club grounds on Yardley Wood Road.) There were major successes for Moseley in the early days of rugby, including a three-year undefeated run from 1879 to 1882, which included winning the first Midland Counties Challenge Cup.

Particular attractions and sightseeing spots are the valley of the river Nister in the north, the natural monument “Hochstein” in Neuhochstein with its unusual basalt formations – and at 525 m also the highest spot in the Westerburger Land – the Catholic parish church Mariä Heimsuchung in Höhn, the parish church St. Josef in Schönberg – a basalt building from 1891, and painted to give its original appearance in 1992 – and the industrial memorial at the marketplace in Höhn. Winter sport lovers find themselves in their element in Schönberg, home to the Westerwald's longest ski lift at 700 m. In the winter of 2004-2005, 8,000 winter lovers were counted, who had fun skiing, snowboarding or sledding on the varied and well laid out runs. Hiking lovers can, among other things, reach the Wiesensee, an 80-ha lake with an 18-hole golf course on the shores, over well developed hiking trails.

Sydney Swans playing the Western Bulldogs at the SCG in 2008 South Melbourne was formed in 1867, a foundation member of the first Australian rules competition the Victorian Football Association (VFA) and also its later replacement the Victorian Football League (VFL). The club won five premierships with the VFA up to 1890 and three more in the VFL in the first half of the 20th Century, but a lack of success in the post-war years and serious financial troubles left them ripe for relocation when the game's administrators were looking to expand the competition into other states. In 1982 South Melbourne moved to Sydney and the SCG to become the Sydney Swans. Despite their shaky financial situation, the Swans were the flavour of Sydney in the early years; the Swans matches at the SCG were the place to be seen, rivaling Sydney's main winter sport, rugby league.

Svenska Cupen (), Svenska Cupen i bandy, is a knockout cup competition in Swedish bandy and the main bandy cup only open for domestic Swedish teams. The first year was 2005, and was won by Edsbyns IF. The first women's edition was played in 2019, and won by Västerås SK. Starting for the second year of the cup, a qualification round was made with matches played at different locations around Sweden in January. The real cup was then played at one location in the beginning of or mid-October. Since bandy is a winter sport with a season from autumn to spring, this meant that the qualification games were played in another season than the final cup was played, which could mean that a qualified club could come to the cup with a team consisting of many other players compared to the qualification round, as players are usually traded during the summer.

The club of today arguably owes its existence to the enthusiasm of a 19-year-old Howard Ansdell who initiated the reforming of the club in time for the 1958–59 season and to local businessman Geoff Wright who steered the club into erecting its first clubhouse in 1962, and in 1965 to the purchase of the Capshill Meadow ground. Proceeds from the sale of the ground in 1973 established the splendid facilities we now enjoy. The move to Stanbridge Road occurred at a time when the Town was expanding and with many new players available to the club, was able to attract much stronger fixtures for its Senior XV. The transformation of Cedars Grammar to a comprehensive did not stop the flow of good rugby players to the club as rugby remained the primary winter sport at the school. Thanks to Cedars, Leighton was always able to punch above its weight for a club from a relatively small town.

Stefan Kraft has held the official world record of since 2017 Vikersundbakken in Vikersund, Norway, where the current WR stands Ski jumping is a winter sport in which athletes compete on distance and style in a jump from a ski jumping hill. The sport has traditionally focused on a combination of style and distance, and it was therefore early seen as unimportant in many milieus to have the longest jump. The International Ski Federation (Fédération Internationale de Ski; FIS) has largely been opposed to the inflation in hill sizes and setting of distance records, and no world records have been set at Olympic, World Championship, Holmenkollen Ski Festival or Four Hills Tournament events, as these have never been among the largest hills in the world. Since 1936, when the first jump beyond was made, all world records in the sport have been made in the discipline of ski flying, an offshoot of ski jumping using larger hills where distance is explicitly emphasised.

In 1904, Apawamis built one of the first squash houses in the country demonstrating its early commitment to this winter sport. As a result, the club's squash program now stands as the third oldest in the US. Apawamis was one of the 25 founding clubs of the National Squash Tennis Association in 1911 and an Apawamis member, Dr. Alfred Stillman, was the first and second winner of the NSTA championship in 1911. Successive expansions of the squash facilities were endorsed by members in 1929 making the facilities the most modern in the country and again in 1938 at which time the building offered two regulation singles courts and one doubles court.. Famous women players of the sport at that time included Agnes Lamme, 3 time winner of the Metropolitan Squash Racquets Championship and a winner of the National Doubles Championship with her partner and future Squash Hall of Famer Ann Page. More than 115 years later, Apawamis squash instructors regularly train nationally ranked male and female students.

The Americans were surprised to note the Australian outfielders did not wear gloves. Many of the tourists relied on friends and relatives to get them home as the organisers ran out of credit to send them back home.Harris 2009, pp.14–5 Those players on the team who could afford it continued on to tour England. Games were billed as Australia vs England and were played at the Crystal Palace Sports Ground,Harris 2009, p.15 although the tour turned sour when the team manager left London with the gate receipts, leaving many more players in financial limbo. This set the game back several years in Victoria and South Australia; however, it continued to flourish in New South Wales where the sport was established as a winter sport through the New South Wales Winter League in 1898. The first Australian championships were in 1910 in Hobart, Tasmania between New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania and won by NSW. This was followed by a similar series in Melbourne, Victoria between Victoria, NSW, South Australia and Tasmania in August 1910.

Ski flying is a winter sport discipline derived from ski jumping, in which much greater distances can be achieved. It is a form of competitive individual Nordic skiing where athletes descend at very fast speeds along a specially designed takeoff ramp using skis only; jump from the end of it with as much power as they can generate; then glide – or 'fly' – as far as possible down a steeply sloped hill; and ultimately land within a target zone in a stable manner. Points are awarded for distance and stylistic merit by five judges, and events are governed by the International Ski Federation (Fédération Internationale de Ski; FIS). The rules and scoring in ski flying are mostly the same as they are in ski jumping, and events under the discipline are usually contested as part of the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup season, but the hills (of which there are only five remaining, all in Europe) are constructed to different specifications in order to enable jumps of up to 66% longer in distance.

In Norwegian, the biathlon is called (literally ski shooting).Kunnskapsforlagets idrettsleksikon (Encyclopedia of Sports), Oslo: Kunnskapsforlaget, 1990 In Norway there are still separate contests in , a cross-country race at 12 km with large-caliber rifle shooting at various targets with unknown range. Called military patrol, the combination of skiing and shooting was contested at the Winter Olympic Games in 1924, and then demonstrated in 1928, 1936, and 1948, during which time Norway and Finland were strong competitors. In 1948, the sport was reorganized under the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon and became re-accepted as in Olympic sport in 1955, with widespread popularity within the Soviet and Swedish winter sport circuits. The first Biathlon World Championship was held in 1958 in Austria, and in 1960 the sport was finally included in the Olympic Games. At Albertville in 1992, women were first allowed in the Olympic biathlon. The pursuit format was added for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and the IBU added mixed relay as a format for the 2006 season.
